Reading makes a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man. 71 Here is some
advice from them.
Write regularly (定期地) and remember ideas don’t come out suddenly. Peru’s Mario Vargas Llosa won the
2010 Nobel Prize in Literature. Vargas Llosa said that instead of waiting for good ideas before you start writing,
you should just make yourself write regularly. 72 “If I just wait for inspiration (灵感), I will never
finish a book. My inspiration comes from years of hard work,” he said.
Use a pen and paper instead of a computer. British-Japanese author Kazuo Ishiguro won the 2017 Nobel
Prize in Literature. Ishiguro said, “I write my first drafts (初稿) with a pen and paper instead of using a computer.
When I write my first draft, I don’t worry about the style, or even whether the story makes sense (讲得通). 73
Then I plan the whole thing out from that. I number the parts and move them around.
By the time I write my next draft, I have a clearer idea of where I’m going.” he explained.
74 In 1993, American author Toni Morrison became the first black woman to win the Nobel Prize
in Literature. Morison, who died in 2019, said that her favorite part of her work was that she could show more
with fewer words, without having to describe every detail (细节), depending more on readers’ emotions and
intelligence. “ 75 ”, she said.

When it comes to taking notes, what do you think is the best way: using a pen or typing on a computer
keyboard?
As digital devices (数码设备) have played a main role in society, “keyboard activity is now often used for
early handwriting,” a new study shows. The idea is that typing may be easier for young children. Some schools in
Norway have become completely digital, says Audrey van der Meer, the new study’s leader. However, she
believes that young children should learn to manage a keyboard, and at the same time learn to write by hand
successfully. She notes that although computer technology is often necessary today, using a pen activates (激活)
more areas of our brain than a keyboard does. This is because writing needs complicated (复杂) movements that
activate more areas of the brain. So that we can improve learning — and probably remember more — by
handwriting our class notes.
When we write, our brain needs to think about and bring back memories of the shape of each letter. We also
need to use our eyes to watch closely what we’re writing. And we need to control our hands to press a pen or
pencil to write the different letters. All of this uses and connects more areas of the brain. Along the way, these
processes appear to open the brain up for learning. She points out that taking notes by hand activates “visual (视
觉) note-taking”. Rather than typing blindly, the visual note taker has to think about what is important to write
down.
On the other hand, this study doesn’t ask people to avoid digital devices. In fact, it points out that computers
and other devices with keyboards have become necessary in many modern classrooms. Keyboarding also can be
especially helpful for students with certain special needs, such as if they can’t use their hands smoothly.
But nearly all students will be improved by learning handwriting and drawing at an early age, the researchers
now conclude.76.
