long way. If fifty pence pieces are not exchanged for sweets, they rattle for months inside the money-box. Only

nice big bar of chocolate.
My nephew, George, has a money-box but it is always empty. Very few of the fifty pence pieces and
pound coins I have given to him found their way there. I gave him fifty pence yesterday and advised him to
save it. Instead, he bought himself fifty pence worth of trouble. On his way to the sweet shop, he dropped his
fifty pence and it rolled along the pavement and then disappeared down a drain. George took off his jacket,
rolled up his sleeves and pushed his right arm through the drain cover. However, he couldn’t find his fifty pence
piece anywhere, and what’s more, he couldn’t get his arm out. A crowd of people gathered round him and a
lady rubbed his arm with soap and butter, but George was firmly stuck. The fire-brigade was called and two fire
fighters freed George using a special type of grease. George was not too upset by his experience because a

Blood donations save lives. But blood can only be stored under refrigeration for up to six weeks. After that, it’s
no longer usable for transfusions. Because of that limitation, people have to continually donate blood to meet the
needs.
Jonathan Kopechek, a bioengineer from University of Louisville says suspension to regular blood donations
due to COVID-19 has put stress on the blood supply, and the pandemic underscores the need for more reliable
long-term storage methods.
Good news is that Kopechek’s team has developed a method of preserving blood so it can be stored in a
dehydrated(脱水的) state at room temperature. To do so, they turned to a sugar called trehalose(海藻糖), which is a
common ingredient in donuts(甜甜圈). Trehalose is intended to help make them look fresh even when they are
months old, and you wouldn’t know the difference.
The researchers chose trehalose because, in nature, it’s made by animals like sea monkeys—famous for their
ability to survive dehydration. “So these animals can dry out completely for a long time and then be rehydrated and

resume normal function. So we wanted to use the trehalose produced by these organisms and apply that to
preserving blood cells in a dried state.”
But first, the researchers had to get trehalose into blood cells. To achieve this, they drilled temporary holes in
the cell membranes(细胞膜). And they need to have sufficient trehalose on both the inside and the outside of the
cell in order to survive the dehydration and rehydration process. At that point, the blood could be dried and made
into a powder. “And then we can rehydrate the blood and have it return back to normal.”
Kopechek said the technique could be ready for clinical trials in three to five years. If successful, it could be
used to create stores of dried blood in case of future pandemics or natural disasters—and for humanitarian aid
work, military operations or even missions to Mars. Maybe first aid kits on Mars will include dried red blood cells.
12.Which has the closest meaning with the underlined word in Paragraph 2?
A.Satisfy.
B.Decrease.
C.Highlight.
D.Influence.
13.What can we learn about trehalose?
A.It can only be found in sea monkeys.
B.It should be preserved in a dried state.
C.It helps to keep donuts fresh and tasty.
D.It contributes to long-term blood storage.
14.Which is the correct order of storing blood with trehalose?
Drying blood and making it into a powder.
Getting trehalose into blood cells.
①
②
Rehydrating the blood.
Drilling holes in the cell surface.
③
④
A.④②①③
B.④①②③
C.②④①③
D.②③④①
15.What is the text mainly about?
A.Dried blood has a promising prospect.
B.Trehalose could help stored blood last.
C.The need for stored blood is on the rise.
D.Storing blood longer is very challenging.
【答案】12.C 13.D 14.A 15.B

Good news is that Kopechek’s team has developed a method of
preserving blood so it can be stored in a dehydrated(脱水的) state at room temperature. To do so, they turned to a
holes in the cell membranes (他们在细胞膜上钻了一些临时的洞)”,“have sufficient trehalose on both the
inside and the outside of the cell (细胞内外都有足够的海藻糖吗)”,“the blood could be dried and made into a
powder (血液可以被干燥成粉末)”和 “we can rehydrate the blood and have it return back to normal (我们可以
故选A 项。
根据第二自然提出的问题“the pandemic underscores the need for more reliable

September 23 marks the start of a new season. 1 6
In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually
has only one name: autumn. But if you travel across the Atlantic, you’ll find that people use both fall and autumn
interchangeably when referring to this time of year, making it the only season in the English language with two
widely accepted names.
1 7
According to Dictionary.com, fall isn’t a modern name that followed the more traditional autumn. The two
terms are actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other, with the term fall being used even a bit
earlier.
1 8
The word is of Germanic origin and meant “ picking” or “ collecting”, a nod to the act of
gathering and preserving crops in the field before winter. In the 1500s, English speakers began referring to the
season separating the hot and cold months as either the fall of the leaf or the spring of the leaf, or fall and spring for
short. . 19
By the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “automne” and the Latin “autumnus”,

had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.
Around the same time England adopted autumn, the first-ever British American colonists(殖民者)were
voyaging to North America. 2 0 While the former fell out of fashion overseas, it established itself in the local
vocabulary by the time America won its independence. Today, using both words to describe the season before
winter is still a unique American behavior.
A. The Americans prefer using fall to using autumn.
B. With them they brought the words fall and autumn.
C. So what is it about the season that makes it so special?
D. But for some reason, only spring had staying power in Britain.
E. It is time to gather apples, rice and other things for the farmers.
F. However, what exactly you should call that season depends on where you are.
G. Before either word appeared, the season between summer and winter was known as harvest.
【答案】16.F 17.C 18.G 19.D 20 . B
September 23 marks the start of a new season
In Great Britain, the third season of the year 和if you travel across the Atlantic, you’ll find that people use
both fall and autumn,那么只有F 项(到底用fall 还是autumn 取决于你在什么地方),故选D 项。
【18 题详解】根据空后对该词的解释meant “picking” or “collecting”, a nod to the act of gathering and
preserving crops in the field before winter(意思是采摘和收集,在冬天来之前在田地采摘和保存粮食的行
为)可以知道这就是harvest(收获),故选G 项。
(By the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “automne” and the Latin
“autumnus”, had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.),故空格处故选A 项。
【20 题详解】根据前一句“the first-ever British American colonists(殖民者)were voyaging to North

I am a proud mother of three children, my last little one being delivered in the middle of this pandemic. She
was born in August and her name is Aida.
Shortly after having Aida, my mother-in-law Ann showed me something she learned from her friend’s
mother in an art class she attended weekly. She had showed me how to knit a scarf. She showed me stitches (针)
and gave me her half done project.
I spent a lot of time breastfeeding my sweet little girl, so I had some extra time to do something with my
hands throughout the day. I enjoyed making the scarf so I purchased tons of yarn (线) since it was winter. I
wanted to make scarves for my three children as Christmas gifts.
There was a new family that moved in down the street. The only daughter of the family was Jane, a shy
girl, aged 14, the same age of my oldest son David. It seemed that she came from a financially disadvantaged
family, for she always wore old clothes. Worse still, in such cold days, she had no more clothes to wear and
trembled with cold.
Due to the pandemic (全世界性的流行病), society was thrown into crisis mode. Schools were closed,
food supplies and deliveries were suspended and children were stuck at home.In such discouraging times,
however, they became good companions, talking and playing at home or around the houses.
It was dreadfully cold this winter. Every time David came back from outside, with red face, he always
cried, “Mum,it is freezing outside!” Then, he came over to see whether I finished the scarf. I could tell how
impatient he was to wear my scarf sooner! I had to speed the project to satisfy his expectation. But David
comforted me saying he could wait a few days. What a kind and considerate boy he was! Then my great art
project finally was accomplished on the morning ahead of Christmas.

excitedly kissed me in the cheek, beaming at me “Thank you, Mum. This is the best gift I have ever
received.” Before I could say anything, he dashed out, to join Jane with a spring in his step. I felt relieved and
content as a mother, seeing David play happily outside, with the scarf sheltering him to brave the bone-chilling
wind. Wearing a smile on my face, I continued my chores that morning.
Later that day David came back saying Jane also deserved a scarf. Obviously, David noticed Jane could
hardly bear the freezing weather with worn-out clothes. “Can I give this to Jane as a Christmas gift?” David
ventured in a low voice. Smilingly, I nodded. Seeing David rush into Jane’s house with the scarf in his hand, I felt
a burst of pride. I was happy that both of them received the best gift for Christmas. For Jane a scarf to keep warm,
and for David a taste of happiness of giving.
