Researchers from the University of Bath have developed motion capture technology that enables you to
digitize(数字化)your dog with only one camera. The software could be used for a wide range of purposes, from
helping vets diagnose lameness(跛)and monitoring recovery of their dog patients, to behavior supervision.
The University of Bath's motion capture research centre digitize the movement of 14 different breeds of dogs.
Wearing special doggie motion capture suits with markers, the dogs were filmed under the supervision of scientists
doing a range of movements. They used these data to create a computer model that can accurately predict and copy
the poses of dogs when they re filmed without wearing the motion capture suits. This model allows 3D digital
information for new dogs-their shape and movement-to be captured without markers and expensive equipment, but
using a single RGBD camera instead.
The researcher Kearney said, “This is the first time RGBD images have been used to track the motion of dogs
using a single camera, which is much more affordable than traditional motion capture systems that require multiple
cameras. This technology allows us to study the movement of animals, which is useful for applications such as
detecting lameness in a dog and measuring its recovery over time.”
The team has also started testing their method on digital images of other four-legged animals including horses,

cats, lions and gorillas, with some promising results. They aim in the future to extend their animal dataset to make
the results more accurate;they will also be making the dataset available for non-commercial use by others. “Our
research is a step towards building accurate 3D models of animal motion along with technologies that allow us to
very easily measure their movement.” said Kearney.
4.What is special about the new software mentioned in Para 1?
A.It equips your dog with a motion capture suit.
B.It can be useful for pets to behave themselves.
C.It helps you monitor dogs using only one camera.
D.It offers a wide range of entertainment applications.
5.What is necessary to make sure a single RGBD camera works?
A.A special computer model must be set up in advance.
B.The dogs must wear motion capture suits without markers.
C.The dogs must be in the supervision of multiple cameras.
D.3D digital information must be sent into the cameras.
6.What is the next step of the new technology according to Kearney?
A.To make the dataset available for more profits.
B.To make more accurate models of animal diseases.
C.To extend the animal dataset to improve its accuracy.
D.To test RGBD cameras on other four-legged animals.
7.What's the main purpose of the passage?
A.To encourage a new method of safe dog-walking.
B.To introduce a new motion capture technology.
C.To explain the applications of diagnosing dogs' diseases.
D.To prove the effects of the technology on different animals.

Many teachers believe frequent quizzes( 小测验) help students better grasp classroom material. Crede, an
associate professor of psychology, was skeptical that something as simple as a quiz could positively affect students’
academic performance. He decided to dig deeper and conduct an analytic study of existing research to see if there
was any proof to the idea. What he discovered truly surprised him.
4

学科网(北京)股份有限公司
Crede analyzed data from previously published studies that examined 52 classes with almost 8,000 students,
primarily college-level courses, to determine if frequent quizzes improved the students’ academic performance.
Laboratory settings were kept out of the study because Crede wanted to observe whether similar studies from labs
would apply to general classrooms.
Crede discovered that when students are quizzed over class material at least once a week, they tend to perform
better on midterm and final exams compared to students who did not take quizzes. He also found that students who
took frequent quizzes were less likely to fail the class, especially if they were struggling with the course content.
Students who struggle the most in a class seem to benefit the greatest from frequent quizzes. The other surprising
thing was how much quizzes helped reduce failure rates in classes. The chances of passing a class went through the
roof where instructors used this. In addition to quiz frequency, another factor that seemed to positively affect
students’ performance was immediate feedback from instructors. Also, quizzes that required students to answer
with written responses proved more beneficial to their understanding of class material compared to multiple-choice
questions.
Asking teachers to grade written quizzes daily or weekly may discourage some from carrying them out in their
classes. Instead, it is recommended that instructors give online quizzes that can be automatically graded by a course
management system. Quiz attributes(属性) proved insignificant in the study, including whether the tests were pop
quizzes or planned, or if they were online or on paper.
8. What did Crede do to ensure his study’s accuracy?
A. He focused on what happened in classrooms.
B. He researched as many students as he could.
C. He made laboratory settings as real as possible.
D. He gave easy quizzes to make every student do well.
9. What did Crede discover in his study?
A. Frequent quizzes could remove students’ failure in classes.
B. Instructors’ feedback was more important than frequent quizzes.
C. Frequent quizzes were especially useful to the struggling students.
D. Multiple-choice questions shouldn’t be included in frequent quizzes.
10. What may be a disadvantage of frequent quizzes for teachers?
A. Accessing the Internet less frequently.
B. Having too many exam papers to mark.

Art and science may seem like opposite things. One means the creative flow of ideas, and the other means
cold, hard data—some people believe. In fact, the two have much in common. Now, a study finds art can help
students remember better what they learned in science class.
Mariale Hardiman, an education specialist at Johns Hopkins University, noticed that students who used art in
the classroom listened more carefully. They might ask more questions. They might volunteer more ideas. What’s
more, students seemed to remember more of what they had been taught when their science lessons had involved
(涉及)art. To prove that, Hardiman teamed up with some researchers and six local schools.
In the experiment, the researchers worked with teachers in 16 fifth-grade classrooms. They provided
traditional science lessons and art-focused ones. In a traditional science class, for example, students might read
aloud from a book. In the art-focused one, they might sing the information instead.
The team randomly assigned(随机分配)each of the 350 students to either a traditional science classroom or
an art-focused one. Students then learned science using that way for the whole unit—about three weeks. When they
changed to a new topic, they also changed to the other type of class. This way, each student had both an art-focused
class and a traditional one. Every unit was taught in both ways, to different groups of students. This enabled the
researchers to see how students did in both types of classes.
The team found that students who started off in traditional classes performed better after they moved into an
art-focused class. But those who started in an art-focused class did well even when they went back to a traditional
science class. These students appeared to use some of the art techniques(技巧)after going back to a traditional
class. Classroom teachers reported that many students continued to sing the songs that they learned after finishing
the unit. “The more we hear something, the more we retain it,” Hardiman says. “It suggests that the arts may help
students apply creative ways of learning on their own.”

I handed the card from my school's help-wanted board to the man behind the counter of Mort's Deli (熟食
店). Even before I opened my mouth, he was shaking his head.
It was September 1957, and my family had just arrived in California. My father only got work two or three
days a week. Our poor savings were gone, and as the eldest boy of the family, I was the only one able to help.
''Let me work the rest of the week, and if you don’t like the way I do the job, don't pay me,'' I said. The tall
man stared at me, and then nodded, ''I'm Mort Robin. What's your name?''
At Mort's, I worked very hard. Near the end of the day he called me up to him. ''How much did that card at
school say this job paid?'' he asked. ''One dollar an hour,'' I whispered. Actually I was willing to take less.
''That's not enough for someone who works as hard as you,'' Mort said. ''You start at 1.25.'' Over the next few
weeks, I learned a lot about Mort. A few years older than my dad, he was from Chicago and had a daughter at my
age. When things were slow, he often shared stories from his army days. Our store was closed on Sundays, so every
Saturday evening Mort urged me to take home the leftover soup. It was a meal in itself, a treat for my struggling
family.
One Saturday after work, I was about to step in my house when I saw a large bald man in my father's chair. He
was shouting at my father. I quietly walked into the kitchen and listened through the door. The man wanted to take
our car. I had been in Los Angeles just long enough to understand how essential a car was. Dad offered to make the
three payments that were due, but the man demanded the entire sum - $325, or the car.
I slipped out of the door, thinking: Who might have $325? Who would even consider lending me so much
money?
