In early April, the China Agricultural University MBA Reading Club did something very “slow”—it launched a 19-day reading program: *Asking the Right Questions*. The activity was initiated and promoted by Xu Chuanbao, president of the 2025 cohort, and Liu Aixin, vice president. There were no complicated rules or mandatory check-ins, yet over 30 students still signed up, dedicating 30 minutes each day to continuous reading and reflection. Daily check-ins and sharing sessions took place in the group, and it was within this reading atmosphere that a question gradually emerged: As AI becomes increasingly adept at answering questions, are we still asking them seriously? This question didn’t remain within the reading club; it became the starting point for the later “Reading in the AI Era” joint sharing session with eight universities.

The reading program officially began on April 8th. The reading club didn’t emphasize “finishing the book,” but rather focused on one thing: whether you were truly thinking. Thus, questions were constantly raised: What problem do you hope to solve through this book? Which sentence today made you stop and think? Is there a question you’ve always wanted to ask but haven’t yet?
This wasn’t just reading to “complete a task,” but a process of training one’s thinking methods. The rhythm of the book club group was unique over these 19 days. No one pressured for progress, but there was a gentle reminder every day. Some read a few pages on their commute, some opened the book late at night, and some paused midway before resuming their pace. Different rhythms, but gradually converging on the same thing—starting to ask more questions about information.

If reading is input, this shared reading was even more important—practicing expression and deconstruction. One evening’s group discussion brought this atmosphere to a climax: summarizing one’s biggest takeaway in a single sentence, engaging in a clash of opinions around hot topics, and deconstructing seemingly correct conclusions. Some used text, some sent voice messages; there were no standard answers, but everyone was expressing themselves earnestly. At the same time, questions appeared periodically in the group: “Do you really understand this conclusion?” “Do you agree with it because it’s correct, or because it sounds correct?” In such interactions, “expressing opinions” became natural, while “deconstructing opinions” gradually became a skill.

This 19-day shared reading session didn’t provide a definitive answer. But the changes it brought were concrete and real—some people started pausing when faced with information to consider “Is this true?”; some focused more on reasoning than the conclusion itself when expressing opinions; and others asked themselves before using AI: What problem do I actually want to solve? These changes may be small, but they are slowly accumulating.
For a manager, this ability to “stop and think” is precisely the most scarce resource in complex decision-making. It won’t immediately make you a better leader, but it will give you less blind obedience and more confidence in your judgment. Therefore, this was not just a reading activity, but also an exercise in “how to think.” In an era of ever-increasing information speed and a plethora of answers, book clubs still allow people to slow down, read carefully, think deeply, and exchange ideas meaningfully. The China Agricultural University MBA Book Club will continue to conduct such activities: not just providing a book, but providing more ways to learn.
Inwardly, it’s about gradually solidifying thinking; outwardly, it’s about gradually creating connections. We will continue to do this slowly. Every moment of slow reflection will ultimately become the most stable step on the road to management.

We haven’t compiled standard answers, but we’ve left some genuine thoughts:
1. A viewpoint without supporting reason is merely an opinion, not a conclusion.
2. Remembering a conclusion doesn’t equate to understanding it.
3. Ambiguous terms, if not clarified, can easily lead to biased discussions.
4. Fragmented information is quick to acquire, but neglecting argumentation weakens its reliability.
5. Questioning is not offensive, but a respect for the truth.
6. Critical thinking is not just about questioning others, but also about questioning oneself.

Critical thinking is not about arguing for the sake of arguing, but about establishing a series of interconnected key issues. The book distinguishes between passive absorption (“sponge-like thinking”) and active selection (“gold-mining thinking”), and advocates for “strong critical thinking” that dares to question one’s own position. The core is mastering ten questioning tools, such as clarifying the topic, reasons, ambiguities, assumptions, fallacies, and the validity of evidence. Ultimately, learning to ask questions is essential to becoming a rational and clear-headed thinker amidst the deluge of information.

Opening “Asking the Right Questions” is a dialogue with one’s own thinking. The author points out that “sponge-like thinking” leads to passive absorption and a loss of self, while “gold-mining thinking” is a gentle dialogue with knowledge, touching the essence through questioning. The book distinguishes between weak critical thinking (only knowing how to refute externally) and strong critical thinking (daring to examine internally), the latter being the necessary path to cognitive maturity. True critical thinking is not cold logical techniques, but a calm and clear-headed wisdom of life—slowing down, asking more questions, and not being swayed by emotions. Learning to ask questions is ultimately not about arguing, but about having a dialogue with oneself over time, living a clear and independent life.
