David had a new baby sister. She lay in a bassinet(婴儿摇篮)in the kitchen, and everyone thought she was

him a package. But when he started to open it, she said, “This is for the baby. You and I will have a treat later this
week.” Slowly David walked outside. He had swept the front porch(门厅) this morning, even the leaves that
were ____14____ in the corners—but Aunt Sue hadn’t noticed. He heard whistling down the block. It was Mr. Larkin, the mailman. David decided to meet him. He jumped
all the way down the sidewalk on one foot and didn’t even fall down. But Mr. Larkin just said, “I hear you have a
new baby sister. Aren’t you ____15____?” And he gave David the mail.
David walked with heavy steps back to the house. Mother and Aunt Sue were still talking, even though it was
almost lunchtime. He put the mail on the table and ____16____ a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich. He made it just
right. It wasn’t even drippy(滴水的).
His brother Jeff, home from kindergarten, rushed into the kitchen. David held up his sandwich. “Look, Jeff. I
made my own ____17____.” But Jeff just nodded and said, “Guess what? The baby smiled at me!” David ate his
sandwich. It wasn’t that good after all. He could hardly taste the jelly.
The house was quiet. Mother and the baby were taking a nap, and Jeff was outside playing. David got out his
crayons and drew a whole page of turtles, each a different color. The front door opened. It was his big sister Beth,
home from high school. He took his picture in to show her. She smiled. Then she took out a little package and said,
“Look, David. I got these little shoes for ____18____. Aren’t they cute?” And she ran upstairs to show Mother.
David went outside and got his bike. He rode up and down the sidewalk, very slowly. His stomach hurt.
Finally he went back in the house. Mother was just coming out of the kitchen. She held out her arms. “Come and
give me a hug, David. I’ve hardly seen you all day. What have you been doing?”
All of a sudden his stomach felt better. He gave his mother a big hug and took her hand. “I’ll show you,” he
said. He took her out on the porch. “ David, you swept the porch — you even got the leaves in the corners!”
He felt a big smile pop out on his face. He jumped down all the steps on one foot. She clapped. “And you
didn’t even ____19____.”
He took her back in the house to see his turtle picture. She looked at each turtle carefully. “David, this is a
wonderful picture. Let’s put it up on the refrigerator, so Daddy can see it when he gets home.” They walked
together into the kitchen. There was the baby, still sleeping and making little wiggling noises. David looked at his
mother, but she was busy taping his picture to the refrigerator.
He reached over and touched the baby’s hand. She grabbed(抓住)his finger and held on ____20____. A

Song and Dance Man
After wiping his shoes with a cloth, Grandpa puts them on. He begins to dance. His feet move slowly at first,
while his tap shoes make soft, slippery sounds like rain on a roof.
Grandpa is 79. He used to sing and dance every day on the stage for as long as 50 years. We know how much
he loves the stage, so we bring him back here as a birthday surprise. Not surprisingly, he enjoys himself just like
before.
We forget that it’s Grandpa dancing, and all we can hear is the slippery tap(敲打声)of two feet, and all wecan see is a song and dance man gliding across a stage.
He says, “Watch this!” and does a new step that sounds like a woodpecker(啄木鸟) tapping on a tree.
Suddenly, his shoes move faster, and he begins to sing. His voice is as round and strong as a canyon echo, and his
cheeks get rosy as he sings “Yankee Doodle Boy,” a song he knows from the good old days.
There are too many dance steps and too many words in the song for us to remember, but the show is better
than any show on TV.
The song and dance man stops and leans forward with a blink. “What’s that in your ear?” he asks and he pulls
a silver dollar out of somebody’s hair. He rolls his hat down his arm, catches it in his hand, and flips(抛) it back up
onto his head.
“ Know how to make an elephant float? ” he asks. “ One scoop of ice cream, two squirts(喷射) of soda and
three scoops of elephant!”
We’ve heard that joke before, but the song and dance man slaps his knee and laughs until his eyes water.
He tries to wipe them with a red hanky(手帕 ) from his pocket, but the hanky just gets longer and longer as he
pulls it out. He looks so surprised that we start laughing too, and it feels like the whole room is shaking.
25. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Grandpa dances every day although he is 79.
B. We invite Grandpa to see us dancing on the stage.
C. We don’t really like the joke he has told before.
D. Grandpa is good at dancing and doing funny things.
26. What does the underlined word “gliding” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. singing loudly B. talking happily
C. moving quickly D. jumping excitedly
27. According to the passage, we can feel that the song and dance man is ________.
A. tired B. pleased C. patient D. bored
【答案】25. D 26. C 27. B

Killer bees started in Brazil in 1957. A scientist in Sao Paulo wanted bees to make more honey, so he put 46
African bees in with some Brazilian bees. The bees started to breed and make a new kind of bee. However, the new
bees were a mistake. They did not want to make more honey; they wanted to attack. Then, by accident, 26 African
bees escaped and bred (breed 的过去时,繁殖)with the Brazilian bees outside.
Scientists could not control the problem. The bees spread. They went from Brazil to Venezuela and then
Central America. Now they are in North America. They travel about 390 miles a year. Each group of bees, or
colony, grows to four times its old size in a year. This means that there will be one million new colonies in five
years.
Killer bees are very dangerous and people are right to be afraid of them. When killer bees attack people, they
attack in great numbers and often seriously hurt or kill people. 400 bee stings(蜇,叮)can kill a person. A total
of 8,000 bee stings is not unusual for a killer bee attack. In fact, a student in Costa Rica had 10,000 stings and died.
What can you do if you see killer bees coming towards you? The first thing you can do is run—as fast as you
can. Killer bees do not move very fast but they will follow you up to one mile. Then you must go into the nearest
house or tent. Don’t jump into water. The bees will wait for you to come out of the water. Killer bees will try to
attack the head or the face, so cover your head with a handkerchief or a coat. You may even take off your shirt and
cover your head. Stings to your chest and back are not as dangerous as stings to your head and face. However, if the
bees sting you many times, you must get medical attention immediately.
Up to now, killer bees have killed about 1,000 people and over 10,000 cows in the Americas. In the United
States alone, five people have died from killer bee stings since 1990. The first American died from bee stings in
Texas in 1993. From Texas, the bees moved to Nevada, New Mexico and then Southern California. Where will they
go next?
28. People find killer bees very dangerous mostly because _________.
A. they always sting people for no reason
B. they can seriously hurt or even kill people
C. they usually follow people for a long distanceD. they like to attack the head and the face
29. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. If you see killer bees coming towards you, jump into water at once.
B. It is not dangerous when the killer bees sting on your chest and back.
C. If the bees sting you many times, go to see a doctor right away.
D. Killer bees do not move very fast, so you don’t need to run away.
30. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To advise people to keep away from killer bees.
B. To explain why killer bees spread so quickly.
C. To encourage scientists to do more experiments.
D. To introduce an unusual kind of bee.
【答案】28. B 29. C 30. A

Do you know we are living in the world of mass media? Mass media are tools of communication and allow us
to record and pass information rapidly to a large, scattered(分散的)audience. However, have you imagined what
life would be without the media? Are you a media user who would go mad after two hours without TV, friend
requests, exciting online games and your mobile — or would you easily survive?
Recently, university students around the world were asked to volunteer in a global experiment calledUnplugged. It was designed to see how young people would react if they were asked to observe a total media ban
(禁止)by unplugging (拔插头) all forms of media devices (设备) for 24 hours.
Unplugged is being run by Dr. Roman Gerodimos, a lecturer in Communication and Journalism at
Bournemouth University. The experiment is now over but he doesn’t yet know the full findings. However, during
the experiment, Dr. Gerodimos said there were already signs of how much the exercise affected volunteers. He
said: “They’re reporting withdrawal(孤僻)signs, overeating, feeling nervous, isolated and disconnected. ”
During their 24-hour unpleasant experience, three volunteers had to put up with one interruption from the
media: a BBC reporter plus cameraman who followed them around for the day. They were asked to write down 100
lines about their day offline, but of course, they all waited until the next day when they had access to their laptops.
Elliot Day wrote: “Today, my whole morning routine was thrown up into the air. Despite being aware of the social
importance of the media, I was surprised by how empty my life felt without the radio or newspapers.”
From Caroline Scott, we read: “I didn’t expect it, but being taken away from the media for 24 hours resulted in
my day-to-day activities becoming so much harder to carry out than usual… I didn’t break out in a cold sweat like
Dr. Roman Gerodimos expected us all to, but it’s not something I would like to do again!”
And Charlotte Gay wrote: “I have to say the most difficult item for me to be has been without my mobile; not
only is it a social thing, it’s my main point of communication.”
Earlier in the year, a UK government study found that in the UK we spend about half our waking hours using
the media, often plugged into several things at once. And a recent study by Nielson found that on average, US
teenagers send and receive over 3,000 texts per month—that’s about six texts per waking hour.
So, with technology continuing to develop at an alarming rate, how much time will you set aside for sleep in
the future?
31. According to the passage, what do you learn about the global experiment called Unplugged?
A. The experiment was carried out by US and UK governments.
B. The volunteers of the experiment are all university students.
C. It has been carried out among all the students in the world.
D. Its findings proved that Dr. Gerodimos’ expectations were true.
32. According to what the three volunteers wrote during the experiment, we can learn that ________.
A. they all feel very surprised and worried
B. all of them feel their life is peaceful without a mobile
C. it is hard for them to spend the 24 hours without the media
D. it makes them realize the social importance of the mobile
33. What does the writer think about the mass media?A. He prefers not to live with it. B. He thinks highly of it.
C. He worries about its influence. D. He is not sure about its future.
34. What can be the best title of the passage?

七、阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。Last summer vacation, I went to the famous Angkor Wat with my mother. Built in the 12th century, it is an
iconic temple complex (建筑群) located near the city of Siem Reap in Cambodia, and the largest religious
monument in the world. The word “ Angkor ” means “capital city” in the Khmer language, while the word “Wat”
means “temple”.
To reach the impressive site, we had to walk along a very long stone road, across a moat protecting the
complex, and through grassland. On the way, I met local children begging for money, and I gave them some
candies.
Angkor Wat is laid out symmetrically (对称) on tiered platforms that climb to the central tower, which rises to
a height of about 65 meters. Many of its architectures (建筑) have one thing in common: They all have many steep
steps. According to our tour guide, the steep steps stand for a religious meaning that people have to go through
many hardships to get to heaven. What impressed me most was sculptures(雕塑)at the site which can be seen on
almost all of its surfaces, columns and roofs. There are scenes from Indian myth, featuring a collection of animal
and human figures, including Hindu gods or spirits, lions, snakes, winged dragons, and dancing girls.
In 1992, Angkor Wat was named a UNESCO World Heritage site. Later it became even better known when the
blockbuster Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (《古墓丽影》) was filmed there. Since then, Angkor Wat has been high on
the list of must-see sites for travelers around the world.
Cambodians must be proud of preserving their cultural heritage so well.
