“looking”“looked”;“go”与“going”“went”等。

They lower your risk of a fatal heart attack. Researchers found that cat owners had a 30per cent lower risk of
dying of a heart attack.

But you may wonder how it comes about without taking a cat for
walks(但你可能想知道,不带猫散步,它是怎么来的)符合文意,其中出现了关键词cat,与段落主旨相符,it

snaking line—called a serpentine line—and serve each person at the front with the next available register. __34__ This
is what they do at most banks and fast-food restaurants. With a serpentine line,a long delay at one register won't
unfairly punish the people who lined up behind it. Instead,it will slow down everyone a little bit but speed up
checkout overall.
A.Why does this always seem to happen to you?
B.So why don't most places encourage serpentine lines?
C.Some of them may have stood in a queue for almost an hour.
D.The chances of your line being the fastest are only one in three.
E.How high is the probability that you are in the fastest waiting line?
F.With three registers, this method is much faster than the traditional approach.
G.But sometimes,as on a Sunday afternoon, the system gets particularly busy.

Are You a Prisoner of Perfection?
Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach? ___16___ Are you setting yourself up for failure and shame
when you can’t achieve the unachievable? Understanding what drives perfectionism is the first step toward releasing
this self-created anchor that keeps us stuck.
Shame and fear are often the hidden drivers of perfectionism. We believe that if we can fashion a perfectly
polished personality, flash our intelligence, and perfect our humour, then no one can hurt us with criticism and we’ll
win respect and approval.
___17___ Politicians who display a desperate need to be right and refuse to acknowledge mistakes or uncertainty
are often driven by a secret shame. They fear that showing vulnerability(弱点) will expose them to the accusation that
they’re weak. They stick to a desire to be right, perfect, and polished, even when it’s obvious that the emperor has no
clothes.Perfectionism keeps us leaning toward the future. We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to do better.
___18___ However, if we can’t relax and enjoy lighter moments, then we become prisoners of our perfectionism. We
get painfully self-conscious and take ourselves too seriously. Sadly, we deprive(剥夺) ourselves of the simple pleasure
of enjoying the moment and being ourselves.
___19___ We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure. Without failures, we’ll never
learn from our mistakes; we’ll never move forward in our lives. Those who succeed have made countless mistakes. The
important thing is to learn from our error, forgive ourselves and move on.
Being human, perfection is impossible. ___20___ Releasing ourselves from the desire to protect our image, we’re
freed to sail gracefully through our successes and failures—and enjoy our precious life.
A. Do you hold an idealized vision that is impossible to realize?
B. A cure to perfectionism is to make room for our human shortcomings.
C. Do you fear that others will be horrified by what you judge about yourself?
D. The addiction to staying perfect protects us from any sign of being imperfect.
E. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do our best and self-correcting along the way.
F. People who are addicted to perfection are often isolated, even if they seem outgoing and popular.
G. By accepting ourselves as we are and doing our best, we begin to rid the shame that drives perfectionism.
A 17. D 18. E 19. B 20. G
Do you struggle for a goal that is beyond your reach?
They stick to a desire to be right, perfect, and polished, even when it’s
obvious that the emperor has no clothes.
We’re constantly evaluating ourselves in order to do better.
We realize that failing at any enterprise doesn’t mean that we are a failure.
B。

and failures—and enjoy our precious life.

Success looks different for everyone. For one person, it could mean getting a promotion or creating a better work-
life balance. ____16____
But while making changes in your life can seem overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be. You can do small things that
have a huge impact on your quality of life. Check out three things you can do that will empower you to be more
successful — on your own terms.
Set weekly and monthly goals.
Setting regular goals for yourself can keep you from getting stagnant in both your professional and personal life.
The best way to keep track of your goals is to write them down. Jot them on a whiteboard, a notepad on your desk, or
an online calendar — anywhere you can see them regularly. (“Exercise three times this week”, for example, or “Finish
a big presentation.”) ____17____
Set aside time for yourself every day.
____18____ It’s important to stop, take a breath, and have some time just for yourself. Set up calendar alerts or
block out “busy” time in your daily calendar that makes you unavailable to others. During this time, you could go out
for a real lunch away from your desk, take a walk, work on a side project, or even read a book. Whatever it is, be sure
to use this time to recharge your batteries.
____19____
It’s easy to spend all your downtime binge-watching shows on Netflix or obsessing over social media. But when
was the last time you tried something new that put you out of your element? In order to avoid getting bored, it’s
important to break out of your comfort zone by finding fresh activities and passions. ____20____ Pick one thing that
you’ve always wanted to do, or something that you liked when you were a kid and never pursued. Then startresearching ways you can make it happen. By opening yourself up to different experiences, you’re bound to learn
something new about yourself.

If you are of the "no regrets" school of life, you might think that all this regret is a reason for unhappiness. But that
isn't the case. 36__________Here are three steps you can take the next time you find yourself thinking about your past
mistakes.
Kill the ghost.
People often say their regrets "haunt" them. This suggests that regret is like a ghost: not entirely clear but always
awful. Bring your ghost out of the shadows by making a list of your regrets. 37_________ Be honest without
catastrophizing(小题大做). You will find that a list is a lot less frightening than a ghost.
38_____________
After you make a mistake, life moves on. But sometimes you just can't stop kicking yourself. Perhaps you dropped
out of school decades ago and are constantly calculating today how much money you would be making had you made it
to graduation. 39_____________ So, make up your mind to exchange your emotional sentence with a simple oral
declaration: "I will not waste another minute of my life reliving a decision that cannot be changed. ”
Collect your diploma(文凭).40_____________ If you never experienced regret, you would keep repeating the same behaviors that led you to
miss opportunities in the past. Your regret can teach you to become smarter and more successful. So in your list of
regrets, note how you want to change your behavior, and outline your determination going forward right now——and
get started!
A. Forgive yourself.
B. Stop wasting time.
C. Going to the other extreme may be worse.
D. Regret is like a school run by human nature.
E. Write down why each one still bothers you and its bad effects.
F. Well analyzed and managed, regrets can be beneficial to your well-being.
G. In other words, you have voluntarily chosen a life sentence for a poor decision made previously.

Why does a mosquito bite itch?
When a mosquito bites you, it pierces the skin using a special mouthpart to suck up blood and injects saliva (唾液)into your skin. Mosquitoes’ saliva has lots of proteins in it, some of which our body recognizes as foreign, and our
immune cells spring into action to try to fight them. ____17____ . It’s actually the body’s response to the foreign
mosquito protein it is trying to fight. That’s why some people may only have a mild reaction to bites, while others,
more sensitive to the foreign protein, react with large areas of swelling that are more painful.
What helps resist the urge to scratch?
“Don’t scratch” is the advice that most experts and health professionals give. As hard and sometimes unrealistic as
it can sound, scratching inflames (发炎) the skin, and the inflammation makes the skin itch more. “ ____18____ ,”
warned Daniel Markowski, technical adviser for the American Mosquito Control Association, adding that in extreme
cases, people can scar themselves.
Instead, there are dozens of creams and sprays that promise itch relief as well as home remedy (疗法). Choose
what’s right for you can often come down to trial and error. In general, all of the various anti-itch creams are very
similar. There is no scientific evidence these remedies work, and they can come with their own precautions or side
effects. ____19____ .

根据下文“creating an itch (痒) that once you start scratching only seems to get worse(产生一种瘙痒感,一旦你开
E项“The little red bumps swell up almost
根据本段小标题“Why does a mosquito bite itch?(为什么蚊子叮咬会痒?)”
根据下文“It’s actually the body’s response to the foreign mosquito protein it is trying to fight.(实际上,这是
空格C项“It’s not the bite that causes the itch.(瘙痒不是由咬引起的)”,符合文意。故选C。
根据下文“adding that in extreme cases, people can scar themselves.(他补充道,在极端情况下,人们会给自己留
F项“Scratching can cause secondary infections and prolong the
There is no scientific evidence these remedies work, and they can come with their own precautions or side
G项“In fact, the best remedy to fight
the itch is to prevent a bite in the first place(事实上,对抗瘙痒的最好方法是首先防止被咬)”,符合文意。故选
G。
If you experience severe symptoms such as breathing
trouble, you should seek medical attention immediately.(如果出现呼吸困难等严重症状,应立即就医)”可知,本段
A项“When to seek medical attention?(何时就诊?)”,符合
文意。故选A。
