(23-24八年级下·安徽合肥·期末)Many parents ask their children to do chores around the house. Mary,
a mother of three children, never did that before. She always thought her children were too young to do chores.
However, a TV show called Old Enough changed her.
It’s a popular reality show (真人秀) in Japan. The idea of the show is from a children’s picture book. The
book describes a mother asking her five-year-old daughter to run to a store near their home to get some milk. The
child is nervous about going alone but she finishes it successfully. The TV show has a similar story: children as
young as two or three years old go out alone to run errands (跑腿) for their family. After watching the show, Mary
decided to have a try. She then found a way on the Internet to make her children interested in the housework.
Mary used an app called You Rule Chores. It can make doing housework more like playing a game. Every
time the children finish a chore, they can get a coin (硬币) on the app as a prize. The more chores they do, the
more coins they can get. Then they can use the coins to watch their favorite movies or take a trip. Now, her
children can do lots of chores themselves and they become more independent.

Dear Sir,
I’m a Grade 8 student from No.1 Middle School. I began to help out with chores when I was in primary
school. I think it’s very important for teenagers to do so, because teenagers these days need all-round
development. We can learn a lot of living skills by doing chores. I live in the dormitory (宿舍) at school now.
Those skills help me take good care of myself.
When I come back home on weekends, I always help my parents if they need my help. And I can not only
cook the food I like, but also make a big meal for my parents.
I believe that doing chores helps to develop children’s independence.
Yours,
Nancy

Many parents think that it’s very difficult to get their children to do chores. But I don’t think so.
My daughter Ann is ten years old. At night, I make her a chore list for the following days. Then I stick (贴)
the paper with chores on her door. Usually she gets three to eight chores a day. It depends on how she does chores.
If she does all of her chores well, she can get few chores the next day. The chores are some easy ones, such as
sweeping the floor, folding the clothes and cleaning the table after dinner.
For my other two children, the chores are different because they are very young. My elder son knows how
to put their empty dinner plates in the dishwasher. My 19-month-old little son helps me put the dirty clothes in the
washing machine when I am doing the washing. They can also help me when I’m working in the yard. They both
help me pick up the sticks (枝条) and throw them away.

Should children do chores? Some people think that children should not do chores, but many experts believe
that children can benefit (受益) from doing chores. They can learn problem-solving and independence from doing
chores.
However, most experts agree that the chores should be suitable for the children. For example, young
children shouldn’t wash the dishes or take out the rubbish. However, they can do the chores like picking up toys,
putting books in the bookcase and so on to keep the home tidy. In fact, young children usually would like to do
chores because they like doing what Mom or Dad does, and that helps them feel more grow-up.
As the children grow older, many experts advise giving them more difficult chores like washing the dishes
and walking the dog. However, children usually do not want to do the chores. The middle school students may
spend more than two hours a night on their homework. Perhaps more chores on the weekend, not on weekdays
can be helpful.
1.Is it suitable for 5-year-old Lisa to take out the rubbish?

I don’t understand why some parents make their kids help with housework and chores at home. Kids these
days already have enough stress from school. They do not have time to study and do housework, too. Housework
is a waste of their time. Could we just let them do their job as students? They should spend their time on
schoolwork in order to get good grades and get into a good university. Also, when they get older, they will have to

environment at home for their children. And anyway, I think doing chores is not difficult. I do not mind doing
them.

Both work and life are full of pressure in modern society. So, if you do something simple like washing dirty
clothes, it can make you feel relaxed.
“Doing some housework such as washing the windows or ironing (熨) clothes is a good way to face the
pressure,” says Carol Clark, a successful New York psychologist (心理学家). “While washing the windows,” she
says, “Imagine you’re washing away all the little things in life that are troubling you. Cleaning the windows can
help you sweep away some unhappy things.”
But some people didn’t agree. “Housework is the main reason for pressure in my life. I spend too much
time on it and I need time to have a rest.” says Linda, a computer programmer and a mother of three children.
“Get out of housework and then I’ll really be able to relax. Doing much housework makes me feel tired.”
Gary is a doctor and a single father of a six-month-old baby. He is even more against doing housework. “I

(22-23八年级下·山东烟台·期中)Can you cook? If so, what are your specialty dishes?
For middle and primary school students, being able to cook will become a must in the near future. They will
also need to learn how to plant vegetables, raise poultry(家禽)and maintain home appliances(家电)under new
requirements for labor education. Starting from the 2022 fall semester, students in primary and middle schoolstake courses on labor skills at least once a week.
The new standards outline three types of labor tasks. The first refers to everyday chores, including cleaning,
organizing, cooking, and using and maintaining home appliances. Next is productive labor, including agriculture,
making traditional handicrafts, and applying new technologies such as 3D printing and laser cutting. The third
type is service work, which includes volunteer work.
According to the MOE(教育部), labor education must be strengthened to help students cultivate social
values and develop an interest in labor.
Here’s a sample list of household labor duties in the curriculum.
1. First and second graders: wiping tables, washing vegetables, doing the dishes, learning to grow plants or
raise small animals.
2. Third and fourth graders: mopping the floor, cleaning windows, knowing how to make cold dishes and use
home appliances.
3. Fifth and sixth graders: tidying up, mastering the skills of cooking two or three common dishes, such as
fried eggs, or scrambled eggs with tomatoes.
4. Middle school students: cooking three or four dishes independently, learning how to make one or two
kinds of traditional handicrafts, experiencing industrial labor and volunteer work.
Liu Fang, a mother of 6-year-old twins in Beijing, is a strong supporter of labor education. For the past year,
she has trained her daughters to do household chores and make simple dishes for the family.
