Many students ask for advice about improving their English. There are three basic questions.
The first question is about real English. Li Hao from Hubei wrote, "I enjoy watching English
films and listening to real English songs. But it takes a long time. What do you think?"
This is a great way to learn English! Talk about the film or song with your friends, and
guess the meaning of the new words. Just enjoy yourself!
The second question is about speaking. Sam, from Suzhou, wrote, "Our school has a foreign
teacher. But I'm shy and can't speak to her. What should I do?"
When I visit China, lots of people in the street say, "Hello! How are you? Where are you
from? Do you like China?" These are good questions to start a conversation. Many people are shywhen they speak English, so before you begin, take a deep breath and smile! Smiling always
helps.
The third question is about vocabulary. Oliver, from Anhui, wrote, "I want to remember all
the new words. I write them down, but I forget them quickly. What should I do?"
Try to remember eight or ten words a day. Write them on pieces of paper and place them in
your bedroom. Say the words when you see them, and change them every day. And when you
are shopping, how about counting the English words, or saying the English names for everything
you see?

During the last winter holiday, I went to China with my parents. The five-day trip left me with a
deep impression.
As the capital of China, Beijing is a very beautiful city with fresh air and clean streets which
make the travelers feel very pleasant. To my surprise, many people there were learning English.
Later I was told that they did so because Beijing would hold the 29th Olympic Games and they
wanted most foreigners to understand them. They strictly kept the traffic rules. When there was a
red light, no one was seen crossing the street.
Of all the places I visited, I liked the Summer Palace best. To our surprise, although it was
winter when we were there, we still saw green trees and many fresh flowers. The whole park was
very beautiful.
We visited a new modern football field. We were told the buildings where the Olympic Games
would be held were even better than that. I also enjoyed skiing in Xiangshan. Skiing is an
interesting and exciting sport liked by many people. In my eyes, China is a nice place and Chinese people are very kind. In Beijing Station, there
were so many people, and most of them were going home to spend the Spring Festival—the most
important Chinese festival, with their families. Passengers helped each other carry luggage (行李),
and they were very kind to foreigners. We were given a card by the hotel we stayed at, on
which was the address of the hotel. With the card we never got lost in the city.
The five days passed quickly, but the trip left me a lot of sweet memories.

D. before the Spring Festival
9. The foreigners were given a card each by the hotel ________.
A. so that they could easily find their hotel

C. so they could get something freely from the hotel
D. as the New Year’s gift
10. In the writer’s eyes, Chinese people ________.
A. are kind B. are helpful
C. strictly keep the traffic rules D. All of the above.

I used to travel by air a great deal of when I was a boy. My parents used to live in South
America and I used to fly there from Europe in the holidays. An air hostess(空姐) would take
charge of me and I never had an unpleasant experience. I am used to traveling by air and only
on one occasion have I ever felt frightened. After taking off, we were flying low over the city
and slowly gaining height (升高), when the plane suddenly turned round and flew back to the
airport. While we were waiting to land, an air-hostess told us to keep calm and to get off the
plane quietly as soon as it had touched down. Everybody on board was worried and we were
curious to find out what had happened. Later we learned that there was a very important person
on board. The police had been told that a bomb(炸弹) had been planted on the plane. After
we had landed, the plane was searched thoroughly (被彻底搜查). Fortunately, nothing was found a
nd five hours later we were able to take off again.
