1.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As the school year ended and winter broke began. Emma, Sam, and Sophia planned a perfect day at their
favorite community park. This tidy little park was their go-to spot for unwinding ( 放松) and just enjoying some
precious leisure time, even in the cold.
Emma rushed ahead with a soccer ball under his arm, his breath visible in the frosty air. Sam and Sophia trailed
closely behind, their cheeks rosy from the chill (寒冷). It was the kind of winter day that promised endless fun and
carefree laughter, with the possibility of a snowball fight or two. But as they stepped into the park, their hearts sank.
The once-beloved playground, usually blanketed in thick snow, was now a chaotic mess of discarded (丢弃) trash —
candy wrappers stuck in the icy slide’s metal bars, plastic bottles half-buried in the snow, and chip bags rolling in the
wind.
“Look at this!” Sam shouted in disbelief as she pointed to the garbage near the swings.
Emma’s face darkened with frustration. The three friends stood frozen, not just from the cold, but from the
shock of seeing their favorite winter retreat so disrespected. The once clean slides and swings were now buried under a
layer of trash and ice. Sam cast a glance at the walking trails, where garbage seemed to have taken over, with discarded
bags and cans lying everywhere, some even poking out of the snowbanks. Sophia looked out at the snowy fields —
a disaster. The park was vast, but every corner seemed to have been touched by the carelessness of others.
“Who would be so thoughtless?” Emma whispered, shaking his head.
Sophia kicked a plastic bottle in anger, sending it skidding across the icy grass. “It’s not just thoughtless —
it’s disrespectful.”
Sam sighed thoughtfully but suddenly her face lit up. “We can’t just leave it like this. Why don’t we do
something about it? We can, say, form a Cleanup Squad...” she said, her voice soft but firm, carrying a warmth that
cut through the winter chill.

【答案】
Emma and Sophia exchanged an excited glance. The idea of forming a Cleanup Squad sparked a fire.
Without hesitation, Emma grabbed a trash bag from his backpack, and Sophia dashed to the park’s storage shed,
returning with a few more bags and gloves. “Let’s start with the playground,” Emma suggested. Sophia nodded.
Sam, meanwhile, began clearing the trails, her determination evident in every step.
Unexpectedly, other park-goers joined in as they did the cleanup. Some kids playing nearby noticed that and
ran over, asking if they could help. An elderly couple walking their dog paused, then began picking up trash. Before
long, what had started as a small act of three friends had turned into a community effort. The park slowly regained
its former charm. In the end, the park was nearly spotless. Exhausted but proud, their hearts full. They had cleaned
their favorite place and inspired others to take action — proving that kindness and teamwork could melt even the
coldest indifference.

I lived in a small town and I had three best friends, Danny, Mia, and Ruby. We loved to play together after
school and our favorite pastime was flying colorful kites in the open field near the large oak tree (橡树).
One sunny Saturday, we met up to play. We all had our kites ready, beautifully decorated with bright colors
and patterns. The wind was just right, so it was a perfect day to let our kites soar (翱翔). After a while, we decided
to have a competition— who could fly the kite the highest. The field echoed (回响) with our joyful laughter as we
each took turns, our eyes gleaming with anticipation. However, as I let my kite fly high up into the sky, a gust of wind
blew it off course. It got tangled (使缠结) in the branches of the large oak tree that stood tall in the field. I was
disappointed but determined. I decided to climb the tree to rescue my kite. My friends looked at me nervously as I
started my climb, the tree towering over them.
As I climbed higher and higher, the others watched with bated breath (屏住呼吸). They were worried but
also a little excited. After all, it was quite an adventure to see me climbing so high. Suddenly, I felt something wrong. I
was stuck! The branch I was standing on was slippery and I couldn’t seem to move. My friends looked at me with
wide, scared eyes. They didn’t know how to help me. They just shouted words of encouragement, assuring me that I
could do it.
I tried my best to move, but I was scared and my heart was pounding hard. Suddenly, I lost my footing and
fell! My friends gasped in shock. Fortunately, I didn’t fall from a high height, but it was enough to hurt my arm
badly. I cried out in pain. Mia and Ruby quickly ran over to me while Danny ran to fetch an adult. I was sobbing, my
arm throbbing with pain. My friends were there by my side, comforting me.

【答案】One possible version:
The townsfolk (镇民) soon arrived and their expressions etched with concern and alarm. So stunned were
they by the scene that they rushed towards me in a flurry. One of them, a seasoned elder with a knowing gaze,
carefully examined my arm and solemnly declared that it might be broken. Without any hesitation, they carried me
on the stretcher towards the nearby hospital, their footsteps hurried and determined. These townsfolks and my
friends had been making tricks, telling funny stories and making faces, trying their best to make me smile, which
seemed to make me feel a little better.
But they failed to make me happy because of the pain. The intense pain had been overwhelming my soul on
our way, my hands waving chaotically in the air. After what seemed a century in the hospital, I ultimately made it.
Not surprisingly, after the doctor’s examination, I was diagnosed with a fracture and arranged to be hospitalized.
Lying on the bed, I stared at those who cared about me, feeling a warm current into my heart. All of a sudden, my
friends pulled out a kite, my losing kite! With tears in my eyes, the words, which I had read again and again on the
textbook, echoed in my mind. “Without friendship the world is but a wilderness.”——Of Friendship by Francis

3.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
On June 1st, around 10 a.m., an unexpected downpour caught us by surprise. The heavy rain, accompanied by
strong winds, lasted for about an hour. At that time, my mother and I were chatting with two neighbors at the door of
the supermarket when we received a call from my father asking us not to step out of the place until the rain stopped.
As it was raining cats and dogs, none of us dared to go out.
A sudden shout made us alert. We were terrified to see a boy about 15 years old lying on the street, fighting
for his life. He rolled over on the ground with an electric wire on his body. It turned out that a broken electric wire
from the supermarket had fallen on him, causing an electric shock. The narrow street, covered with rainwater, offered
little space for a rescue operation.
I quickly called the power board and asked them to cut the main power, and then I dialed the hospital emergency,
urging them to arrange an ambulance instantly. I did everything I could. Meanwhile, my mother and the neighbors
shouted for help loudly.
A gentleman in his early forties found a long bamboo stick and swiftly wrapped one end with his clothes as
insulation (绝缘) material. He then carefully used the stick to remove the electric wire from the boy. As the ground
was wet with rain water, it was extremely risky to go near the victim. There was a possibility of getting electrified if
one dared to get close to him.
“The boy could be a milkman,” a lady in the crowd said while pointing to the small tins of milk on the floor.
“The boy must have suffered a lot”, someone from the crowd said. At that moment, I desperately wished for an
immediate power shutdown and for an ambulance to arrive as quickly as possible. I kept praying for him.

【答案】     Thankfully, the main power was switched off and the ambulance arrived soon. The medical staff
quickly rushed to the boy. They carefully examined his condition and then carried him onto the stretcher. With the
electric shock risk removed, the rescue operation went smoothly. The gentleman who used the bamboo stick also
heaved a sigh of relief. My mother, neighbors and I watched as the ambulance sped away, still worried about the
boy’s life. We hoped that he could survive this disaster.
The next morning, I learned about the updates in the morning news on TV. It reported that the boy was out of
danger. Thanks to the timely rescue, his life was saved. The power company had also fixed the broken wire to
prevent similar accidents from happening again. I felt extremely glad to hear this good news. This unexpected
incident made me realize that in times of danger, everyone’s little efforts could combine to create a powerful force
to save a life. And we should always be ready to offer a helping hand when others are in trouble.

At the park where my children play stands a big old tree. She has watched over me and my children for two
decades as we play and dream under the tree.
For fourteen years, I had been a stay-at-home, baby-wearing, homeschooling mom. I didn’t just start to make
our meals from zero; I made our homeschool curriculum (课程), too.
One morning while walking and talking, I said, “I just can’t have one more conversation about cloth diapers
(尿布) and homeschool curriculum.” Although our youngest was still wearing diapers, our oldest was soon to graduate
from high school. My husband pointed out that I’ had a long road ahead of me. If my life were like our walk, I had
only begun the first mile. “Why don’t you go to college and finish your degree? ” he suggested.
For that comment, -my husband received a five-mile-long earful of reasons why I could not go back to school.
Besides being too busy with housework, I was not comfortable with the idea of going to college as a middle-aged
adult. As we walked along, I imagined myself sitting in a classroom next to students the same age as my oldest
daughter. What kind of conversations could we have? What, would they think of me — a stay-at-home mom?
One day, with a child on my lap, I read Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree. For my children, it was a story
about a boy who makes friends with a tree. For me, it was a description of my life with a less-than-promising future.
After the tree has given her apples, branches and trunk to the boy, all she has left to give is a seat on her stump ( 树
桩) to an old man. When my story ended, I realized I did not want to be the Giving Tree; I wanted to be the big old
tree in the park. I wanted to stand tall and strong, to stretch out my branches. I love literature, so I decided to take up
literature.

【答案】    I told my husband about my idea. He was very supportive and encouraged me to take the first step.
With his help, I started to prepare for the college entrance exam. It wasn’t easy, as I had to study while taking care
of the family. But I was determined. I joined a study group and got up early every day to study.
Going back to school as a stay-at-home mom was not always comfortable. I felt a bit out of place at first.
The young students seemed to have so much energy and were so different from me. However, I gradually found my
rhythm. I actively participated in classes and made friends with some of my classmates. We shared different life
experiences, and I learned a lot from them. Through hard work, I’m now on my way to achieving my dream of
becoming a person like the big old tree, standing tall with knowledge and confidence.

Dare to Dream
Life! What a precious gift. What a blessing to be alive in a wonderful, vibrant world of unlimited possibilities.
Then, adversity strikes, and this “gift” feels more like a curse. “Why? Why me?” we ask. Yet we never get an answer,
or do we? After contracting Hodgkin’s disease at age seven and being given six months to live, I triumphed over the
odds. Call it luck, hope, faith or courage, there are thousands of survivors! Winners like us know the answer — “Why
not us? We can handle it!” I’m not dying of cancer. I’m living with cancer. I am not afraid anymore.
In my second year of high school, the l class was scheduled to run the mile. I will always remember the day
because due to the swelling and scars from surgery on my leg, for two solid years I had not worn shorts. I was afraid of
the teasing. So, for two years I lived in fear. Yet that day, it didn’t matter. I was ready—shorts, heart and mind. I no
sooner got to the starting line before I heard the loud whispers. “Gross!” “How fat!” “How ugly!” I blocked it out.
Then the coach yelled, “Ready? Set. Go!” I jetted out of there like an airplane faster than anyone for the first
20 feet. I didn’t know much about pacing then, but it was okay because I was determined to finish first. As we came
around the first of four laps, there were students all over the track. By the end of second lap, many of the students
had already quit. They had given up and were on the ground gasping (喘气) for air. As I started the third lap, only a
few of my classmates were left on the track, and I began limping. By the time, I hit the fourth lap, I was alone. Then it
hit me. I realized that nobody had given up. Instead, everyone had already finished.

【答案】As I ran the last lap, I cried. I realized every boy and girl in my class had already beat me, and I could
feel the buzz around me. Dragging my heavy legs and out of breath, I thought I had to try to finish the race, even
though my face was covered with sweat and tears. 12 minutes, 42 seconds after starting, I crossed the finish line. I
fell to the ground and shed oceans. I was so embarrassed.
Suddenly my coach ran up to me and picked up, yelling, “You did it! My boy, you finish it!” He wiped
my tears and said, “A true champion isn’t the fastest, but the one who refuses to quit.” Silence fell. Then thunderous
applause erupted from classmates who’d circled back. Through blurry vision, I saw their teasing words transformed
into respectful nods. In that moment, I understood—my scars weren’t weaknesses but medals of survival. Cancer
taught me to outlast storms, not outrun them. That dusty finish line became my Everest, proving that courage isn’t
about speed, but the willpower to keep moving when every cell screams stop.

Over the phone, Emily talked a lot about a girl named Isabella. Was Isabella Emily’s new best friend? No,
Ashley decided. She couldn’t be. Only Ashley knew how to make Emily’s favorite dessert — strawberry-apple pie.
Ashley couldn’t wait to get back to Minnesota. She ran into the living room. “Can I start packing the car? We
said we’d leave by 4:00.”
Mom glanced up from her computer. “There’s a good chance of snow.”
“The forecast must be wrong. I promised Emily I’d come,” Ashley said.
Mom pushed her chair back and sighed, “We’ll hope for good weather but we’ll stop if it snows.”
“I’ll keep my fingers crossed,” Ashley said, “Nothing will go wrong.”
But everything did go wrong. Snow began to fall. Little flakes at first, then big clumps. The freeway had no
place to stop. The windshield wipers (雨刷器) could hardly keep up. Mom pulled into a rest area. “We’ll stay here
until the roads are clear.”
“It’s Thanksgiving. I brought Emily’s favorite pie. She’s counting on me.” Ashley felt her tears welling up in
the eyes.
Mom squeezed (攥紧) Ashley’s hand. “I’m sorry, sweetie. We can eat pie tomorrow.”
“Where will we stay?”
Mum replied, “The rest stop has a hall. We can sleep on the floor. Grab your blanket and pillow. It’ll be fun,
like camping.”
Ashley hurried out of the car and followed close behind Mom. They stumbled into the hall.Ashley stamped
her feet, and snow slipped onto the floor. In the middle of the hall, a man sat between two little boys on a blanket. A
girl sat with her parents on another blanket next to them.
“Hello,” said Mom. “Hi,” said the girl.
“Welcome. Come to share our Thanksgiving dinner,” said the father of the two young boys. He pulled
sandwiches out of a cooler and set them on the blanket.

“Beef soup and stuffed dumplings,” the girl pointed to their food on the blanket, inviting them to join.
Watching the food, Ashley felt her stomach rumbling and swallowed hard. The offers from them were kind, and
Ashley felt a sense of gratitude. Exchanging knowing glances, she and Mom accepted the invitation to share
Thanksgiving dinner with this unexpected group of strangers. “We'll buy water and sodas from the vending
machine.” the girl smiled at Ashley. “Now all we need is dessert. Where can we get it?” the girl sighed.
Ashley thought about Emily's strawberry-apple pie in the car. “Mom, do you think Emily would be OK if I
shared the pie today?” Ashley whispered to Mum. Mum softly cupped Ashley's confused face in her hands. “I think
Emily would understand, honey. Best friends always listen. ” Ashley nodded, feeling a little better. She said to the
girl, “We have a pie.” The girl's eyes lit up. “Pie? That sounds amazing!” Feathery flakes of snow dancing in the
wind, Ashley and Mum fetched the pie and they enjoyed the special Thanksgiving dinner together with these
unexpected kind strangers.

Once upon a time in a vibrant city park, where the hustle and bustle of life echoed through the trees, an elderly
woman named Margaret sat alone on a weathered bench. Her eyes, once bright with the joy of life, were now clouded
with sorrow. The world seemed to fast-forward (快进) around her, and she felt as if she were a forgotten character in
a play that had long ended. The loss of her beloved husband, a man who had been her rock and her world, had left a
void in her heart that no one else seemed to notice or care to fill.
Margaret’s days were filled with the echoes of their laughter, the warmth of his embrace, and the shared
memories that haunted her. She felt like an invisible ghost in a world that had moved on without her. The park, once a
place of joy and companionship, had become a reminder of what she had lost.
One particularly sunny afternoon, as the park buzzed with the energy of children at play and the chatter of their
friends, a young girl named Lily skipped through the park, her laughter a melody that seemed to dance on the breeze.
Her eyes sparkled with the innocence of youth, and her smile was as bright as the sun above.
As Lily passed by Margaret’s bench, she noticed the elderly woman’s sorrowful expression. The contrast
between her own joy and Margaret’s sadness struck a chord in her heart. Without any hesitation, Lily approached
Margaret, her curiosity and empathy driving her to ask, “Why are you so sad?”
Margaret was taken aback (大吃一惊) by the child’s directness, but there was something in Lily’s eyes that invited
trust. She found herself sharing her story of loss and loneliness, the words she had kept locked away for so long
now tumbling out in a torrent of emotions. Lily listened intently, her young heart swelling with compassion (同情)
for the woman who had once known such love and now knew such pain.注意:

【答案】
From that moment on, Lily made it her mission to bring a spark of joy back into Margaret’s life. Every
afternoon after school, Lily would visit the park, bringing with her small tokens of happiness—a freshly picked
flower, a handmade card, or a story she had written. She would sit beside Margaret, sharing tales of her day, her
dreams, and her adventures. Margaret, initially hesitant, soon found herself looking forward to these visits. Lily’s
innocence and enthusiasm began to break the walls of sorrow that had encased her heart. Slowly but surely,
Margaret started to smile again, her laughter a rare but beautiful sound that echoed through the park.
As weeks turned into months, Margaret’s world brightened. She began to see the park not as a reminder of
loss, but as a place of new beginnings. The once-silent bench became a hub of activity, with other park-goers
stopping to chat, drawn by the warmth of the unlikely friendship between the elderly woman and the young girl.
Delightedly, Margaret found herself sharing stories of her past, her husband, and the life they had built together.
Lily, in turn, learned valuable lessons about love, loss, and resilience. The bond they formed was a testament to the
power of human connection, proving that even in the darkest of times, a single spark of kindness can light up the
world.

Sometimes, we all need that one person to believe in us if we ever want to change our lives. Thankfully, one
homeless man’s note was about to get found by someone willing to help turn his life around.
Anthony Johnson is a 36-year-old who had been living without a home in England. Sadly, his time on the
streets meant that Anthony struggled to find work. He soon decided to leave a note at a bus shelter asking anyone to
give him a chance so he could make his life worth living.
It turned out that Anthony had once got caught up with the wrong crowd. Although he has turned his life
around, Anthony had no way of making money and couldn’t afford a home. To top it off, Anthony had also been
battling his mental health in the last few years and just needed a chance to make it for himself.
It wasn’t until 16-year-old Charlotte Howard saw the note that everything started to change. Charlotte wanted
to help Anthony in his quest to turn things around and decided to start a GoFundMe page. Here, the teen hoped to
raise almost $400-$130 to buy a trailer and the rest to cover the cost of the repairs.
It didn’t take long for Charlotte’s post to take the nation by storm, and the page soon had more donations than
the teen ever imagined. In just six days, Charlotte had blown her initial goal out of the water as the page had received
more than $2,300 in donations. It was way more than either of the pair ever expected.

【答案】Unbelievably, the generosity didn’t end there. The money was only the beginning as Anthony soon found
himself with a brand new job offer from Nelson Smith. Now, Anthony will be able to put his skills to good use as a
landscape gardener. This is merely the beginning of a huge change for Anthony—all thanks to Charlotte’s
generosity.
Charlotte Howard came up with a new idea about how to use the rest of the money. Inspired by Anthony’s story,
Charlotte Howard began to offer more help to more homeless people. With other people’s help he founded a tiny
organization to offer training to homeless people and bought necessary equipment. Anthony is invited to give
training lessons about gardening skills. He is greatly encouraged while he encourages others. The new job not only
has improved his living conditions but also has lifted up his spirits, bringing out the best in him. Starting the page
might have been a small thought by Charlotte, but it was about to change Anthony’s life forever. Sometimes, those
small acts of kindness really can change the world.

In a busy local supermarket, Emma, a diligent college student, worked as a cashier to make ends meet. Her
days were in a rush of classes, part-time shifts, and struggling to realize her dream of becoming an artist. Despite her
tight schedule, Emma’s firm commitment meant she never missed a day of work.
One particular day, though, would prove to be unlike any other. Emma’s workday typically began at 3 pm and
ended around 10 pm. That day progressed like any other until Emma found herself with just an hour left before her
first break.
Then a weary-looking mother arrived at the checkout with her son and a grocery cart. The mother appeared
tired, with sleepy eyes and untidy hair. Emma greeted her with a warm smile, “Have you had a long day?” The mother
responded with a smile, saying, “Yes, it’s been a tiring one. This little one requested lasagna (千层面) for lunch, and I
found we were out of food.”
The woman explained that her five-year-old son, Tristan, was the man of the house, and his younger brother
was in hospital, putting an emotional weight on him. Emma couldn’t help but empathize, recalling her own experiences
as a child with a sick brother.
Emma asked Tristan for his name, and as he cheerfully replied, “Tristan”, Emma presented him with a
lollipop (棒棒糖). She ran it through the register to ring it up before handing it to the delighted young boy.
What Emma hadn’t noticed during her initial scan of the woman’s items was the growing excitement on
Tristan’s face as each beep (滴滴声) from the register resounded. Eager and enthusiastic, he asked, “Can I help? Can
I help?” Emma’s heartwarming response was, “Of course!” She lifted Tristan to her workstation, teaching him how
to ring up groceries.
Unknown to Emma, Tristan’s mother took a photo of their interaction, capturing her son’s pure joy in a moment
frozen in time. Moved to tears, she took more photos of Emma and Tristan at work and expressed her gratitude before
leaving.

10.Last week, frozen cookie dough (面团) saved me from myself.
It all started with a Ping-Pong table. In a college town, a Ping-Pong table is actually a beer-pong table, which
involves bouncing balls into an opponent’s cup of beer, forcing that person to drink its contents. The sounds of beer
pong extending late into the night and early into the morning. College students embraced this as a lifestyle but my
husband and I had to move to a quieter part of town. But now, here was a student neighbor with a new beer-pong
table within full view of my new kitchen window.
I come from a family of angry folks, and I have always hoped that I can change. I go to therapy, meditate,
journal and forest-bathe. But the best way I know to repair the damage is with food. A loaf of banana bread or jugs
of orange juice can open the door of a heart that’s hurt, even if only a little.
Of course, I’d rather not hurt anyone in the first place. But when I saw that beer-pong table, the memories of
drunk and loud college students flew like lava bubbling inside a volcano.
So I walked right up to the student’s house, past that stupid table, knocked on the door and told him that it had
to go.
“Who the hell are you?” he asked. “And what gives you the right to make such a ridiculous demand?”
His response only infuriated (激怒) me more. I yelled back when my husband pulled me away, I threatened
the kid this wasn’t over.
But the next morning, I awoke full of shame. Why didn’t other women get angry like me? Why couldn’t I
choose to find a useful way to release the offence? Why couldn’t I just live and let live?
Just weeks ago I offended a friend and hurt my teenage son. I pulled together a batch (一批) of my big peanut
butter chocolate chunk cookies, baking a half-dozen to beg their forgiveness. The remaining half-dozen cookie dough
balls were in the freezer, unbaked.

【答案】
I hadn’t intended to save the cookie dough balls for future apologies. But now, I saw them as a chance to
make things right. I quickly took them out of the freezer and started baking. The familiar smell of cookies filled the
kitchen, calming my nerves. As I watched the cookies baking in the oven, I thought about how important it was to
handle situations with kindness rather than anger. I knew I had overreacted the previous day, and this was my
chance to make amends. I made sure to bake the cookies to a perfect golden-brown, adding a little extra love to
each one.
The student opened the door a little surprised. I handed him the freshly baked cookies with a sincere smile
and said, “I’m really sorry for my outburst yesterday. I hope you can accept my apology.” He looked at the cookies
and then at me, a bit embarrassed. “No, it’s my fault. I should have thought about the noise. I’ll move the table.”
From that day on, we became friends, and the cookie dough had mended our relationship. This experience became
a valuable lesson for me, and I made a promise to myself to always choose kindness over anger in the future.

On June 1st, around 10 a. m., an unexpected downpour caught us by surprise. The heavy rain, accompanied
by strong winds, lasted for about an hour. At that time, my mother and I were chatting with two neighbors at the door
of the supermarket when we received a call from my father asking us not to step out of the place until the rain stopped.

Thankfully, the main power was switched off and the ambulance arrived soon. The medical staff quickly
rushed to the boy, carefully lifting him onto the stretcher. They checked his vital signs and started first aid treatment
right away. The on-lookers all heaved a sigh of relief. My mother and I decided to follow the ambulance to the
hospital to see how the boy was doing. Along the way, we kept praying for the boy’s recovery. When we got to the
hospital, the doctors took the boy into the emergency room. We waited anxiously outside, hoping for good news.
The next morning, I learned about the updates in the morning news on TV. To our great joy, the boy had
survived the electric shock and was out of danger. The news also mentioned the brave actions of the gentleman who
used the bamboo stick to save the boy. His quick wittedness and courage had played a crucial role in the rescue.
The power board also promised to conduct a thorough inspection of the electrical facilities to prevent similar
accidents from happening again. I felt a deep sense of relief. It was a reminder that in times of crisis, the unity and
kindness of people could make a difference and save lives.

“Let me hide once more,”Arnar begged. “Then I’ll go to sleep, I promise.”
Gudrun couldn’t help smiling.  “Oh, all right.”  She turned back to her knitting.  “I’ll look for you when  I’ve
finished this row.”
“Here’s a clue,”Arnar called as he skipped away.  “Look for me where I always am.”
But Gudrun was already absorbed in her work.
Gudrun wasn’t sure what had awakened her in the middle of the night. Was it the urgency in Mamma’s voice
or the frightening and low rumble that rolled through her room? Gudrun found herself suddenly wide awake, drawn
to the window by a strange and unfamiliar brilliance outside. “An eruption,”  Mamma said as she began to gather
Gudrun’s clothes.  “Maybe Helga fell, maybe a new volcano. We must leave the island quickly.”
“Tonight? How?”  Gudrun asked, her heart pounding.  “Where will we go?”
“We’re lucky. The fishing boats will take us to the mainland.”  Mamma turned to face Gudrun.“Pabbi has
already gone to the harbor. I’m going to help Margret.”  Their elderly. neighbor lived alone. Mamma proceeded, “can
you dress Arnar and take him to the harbor by yourself?”
“Of course,”  she declared. Everyone would help tonight. Icelanders had always worked together to survive in
a land ruled by volcanoes, glaciers, and ocean.
Gudrun dressed and ran to her brother’s room.“Arnar!”she cried, “Wake up!” Hearing no response, Gudru n
hurried to the bed and pulled back her brother’s thick cover.

【答案】
Arnar wasn't there! A knot of guilt formed in Gudrun's stonach as she began to remember Arnar had run off to hide
one last time.Soon after, she had fallen into her own bed, completely forgetting the game and her brother."Arnar!"
Gudrun screamed, looking under the child's bed and in his closet. Tears burned her cheeks as the noise outside
reminded Gudrun that this was no game. She raised a foot to stamp her fury into the floor, then froze as Arnar's clue
suddenly echoed through her mind, “He's always right under me!” With a shout she dashed back to her own room.
Falling to the floor, Gudrun peered under her bed.
There, curled around a worn stuffed bear, was Arnar, sound asleep. Without thinking twice, Gudrun dragged him
out, scooped him up and rushed to the harbor. Hardly had she arrived there breathlessly when she spotted her
anxious parents and Margret. Hours later, Pabbi's boat pulled up to a harbor on the mainland. The deck was bustling
with activity as the islanders prepared to go ashore. Arnar, still clutching his bear, slept peacefully in Gudrun’s lap.
Gudrun shook him to wake up gently. Arnar rubbed his eyes, struggling to stand up and lost his balance, causing
both of them to stumble. “I'm always right under you,” Arnar whimpered, half-asleep. Gudrun smiled and bent to
whisper in his ear. “Never mind. You're just where you belong.” The little boy reached for her hand. Gudrun
grasped it firmly. Together, they followed Mamma off the boat.

In Shanghai, a unique bond began to form between two students from different corners of the world. Li Ming, a
cheerful and curious Chinese student, and John, an American, were paired as roommates during an international
student exchange program. At first, their interactions were filled with awkward silences and misunderstandings. The
language barrier and cultural differences seemed like high walls, making it difficult for them to connect.
However, as days turned into weeks, Li Ming and John started to find common ground. Li Ming, with his
warm smile, would patiently teach John a few Chinese phrases, while John would share stories about American
culture and traditions. Slowly, the walls began to fall. They discovered that despite their differences, they shared a
love for adventure, a passion for learning, and a mutual respect for each other’s cultures. Their friendship blossomed,
and they spent countless hours exploring the city together, trying new foods, and visiting local markets.
The highlight of their time together was a weekend trip to Zhujiajiao Ancient Town. Li Ming showed John the
beauty of traditional Chinese architecture, while John introduced Li Ming to the concept of American road trips. They
laughed, they argued playfully, and they learned from each other. The experience deepened their bond, and they
realized that their friendship had gone beyond the boundaries of language and culture.
Since then, their friendship has become stronger. They became inseparable and stayed together throughout the
exchange program. They got to know each other better and better, and both considered each other as their best
friends.
When the exchange program came to an end, both Li Ming and John felt a heavy sense of sorrow. They had
grown so close that the thought of parting was almost unbearable. Standing at the airport, they made a promise to
each other: No matter where life took them, they would stay in touch and never forget the memories they had created
together. They exchanged addresses and contact information, and with a final hug, John boarded the plane back to
the United States.

【答案】    Years passed, and life took them on different paths. Li Ming continued his studies in China, while John
pursued a career in New York. But their friendship remained strong, nurtured through emails, phone calls, and
occasional video chats. One day, John sent Li Ming a message saying he was planning a trip to China. Li Ming’s
heart filled with joy as he eagerly prepared to welcome his old friend back to his homeland. Li Ming carefully
planned a series of activities to show John the beauty and charm of modern China, hoping to create unforgettable
memories together once again.
When John arrived in China again, Li Ming was there to greet him with open arms. Then they spent days
together, visiting the Great Wall, exploring the Forbidden City, and wandering through the streets of Beijing. Li
Ming introduced John to his family and friends, and they shared stories about their lives since they last met. The
bond between them had not faded; instead, it had grown stronger with time. As they sat on a hill overlooking the
city, watching the sun set, they knew that their friendship would continue to enrich their lives, no matter where their
journeys took them.

Professor Smith came from America to Nigari and he liked to see and understand the people there. One day,
Smith stood by the window, looking at the crowd in the street below and saw a boy, a street sweeper, doing his job.
Smith was, somehow, attracted by him. The boy, around 13, was in neat uniform and swept the street with great care.
The broom was in his hands; if not, Smith would think that he was one of his students.
“Why is he here sweeping the street?” The question pushed him to approach the boy and say, “May I know
your name?” Seeing Smith standing before him, the boy wore a little confusion in his eyes and replied slowly, “Sir!
Rex.” Rex had orderly black and well-combed hair and looked smart, friendly and intelligent. William saw a bright
future for Rex ahead. He politely asked something about Rex’ s family, then he knew that Rex’ s father, and grandfather,
were both sweepers. “Sir, this is the bread and butter giver for my family,” Rex said, neither embarrassed nor shamed
by the question.
Knowing the roots of education may be bitter, but the fruits it gives are very sweet, Smith tried to persuade
Rex to receive more education. However, Rex politely refused, “I cannot leave this work. This is the means of living
for us.”
“I know. But your life should be more than this. What if there is an opportunity right now that might change
your life?” he asked, looking into Rex’ s eyes sharply. “What if today is that opportunity?”
“I would certainly try my best for it and do whatever I can to make myself a better person,” Rex replied, slowly
but firmly, with a sparkle in his eyes.
Smith was satisfied with what Rex said. He decided to go on his mission to help this young boy start a new
journey. He first talked to Rex’s family, stressing the importance of education and the potential it held for Rex’ s
future. Then he arranged to help Rex with some courses after Rex finished his sweeping duties each day.

【答案】Smith gave Rex all the necessary support and guidance he needed to pursue his studies. Fortunately,
some of Rex’s previous school years laid the foundation for his current efforts. Smith then enrolled Rex in a school.
With Smith’s encouragement and financial assistance, slowly but surely, Rex’s initial hesitation gave way to a
burning ambition to learn and improve his conditions. As Rex immersed himself in his studies, Smith watched with
pride as the boy’s confidence grew. “It’s time to see how Rex has progressed these days,” Smith thought. Then he
arranged for Rex to take an exam with his students.
The explosive news that Rex won third place in the exam excited Smith. When the results were announced,
and Rex’s name appeared at the top of the list. Smith could scarcely contain his joy. He had witnessed the
transformation of a street sweeper into a brilliant student. Smith rushed to congratulate Rex, embracing the young
man with a sense of pride and accomplishment. He knew that this was just the beginning of Rex’s journey and from
now on, even without his help, this young boy could find his own way and go ahead firmly.

From the time I was old enough to help on our Indiana farm, I knew what my father expected of me. Three
generations of men in my family were doctors. I heard stories of the lives my grandfather had saved and I heard
similar tales about my father. As Dad grew ever more godlike in my mind, so did the force of the expectation that I
would follow in the family tradition.
But as college neared, I began to feel that becoming a doctor was not what I really wanted to do. I didn’t
dare tell him about my uncertainty. With the weight heavy on my mind the summer before college, I was given a
challenge that I hoped would be a distraction.
Dad kept several bird dogs which I trained on our farm. As usual, Dad turned Jerry over to me. “See what you
can do with him,” he said.
I didn’t anticipate problems. Jerry was a willing dog of about ten months. The first part of his training was
easy. He mastered the basics: sit, stay, down, walk. His only problem was “come”. I’d call “Jerry! Here!” He would
turn and look at me, then go on about his business. In the following days, I noticed he would just take off through the
grass, fast as a wild thing. Despite my intense desire to train him well, I began to feel a strange sense of joy when he ran.
“Why won’t he do what I want him to?” I asked myself. I had never failed with a dog before, but I was surely
failing now. When September came, I finally had to tell Dad that this bird dog wouldn’t hunt. The thought that I had
failed us both made me guilty.
“Son, I know this dog doesn’t do what he should,” he said, “but what he does do is something he likes.” He
continued to look at me firmly. For a moment I felt he could see into my very heart.

【答案】“Dad, I don't think I can do medicine,” I took a solid breath. Hearing this, he lowered his eyes,
obviously disappointed. He appeared so sad that I almost felt close to tears. But to my great relief, his face lit up
when he looked at me again. Staring at Jerry beside his feet, he said gently, “Think about Jerry, son. You expected
him to be the hunter you trained him to be. But he just isn't. It is a good thing, and now we’ll just wait to see how
you run.”
He gave me a tight hug, said good night and left me. At that moment I understood my father as I never had
before, and the love and trust I felt seemed to fill the room. I looked at Jerry, asleep, his legs stretching suddenly as
if to be running even in his dreams. To him, running was a great honor and birds no longer mattered to him. To me,
being a doctor is not my ideal choice, but new ones await me in the future.
