The Pomodoro technique is probably one of the most powerful techniques in all of learning. All you have to do
is set a timer for 25 minutes, and then just focus as attentively as you can for those 25 minutes.
Now if you start focusing on and you’re working on, and then you look up at the timer and two minutes have
passed. You may feel like you can’t hold on. And just let the thought go by , and return your focus to whatever you
are working on. And when that 25 minutes is up you relax a little bit. You might wonder why that 25 minutes is the
magic number, and the reality is we don’t really know. There’s not a lot of research on the Pomodoro technique,
which is surprising because it’s so incredibly popular and people find it very useful.
But there’s an interesting tidbit related to the Pomodoro technique, and that is that: when you just think about
something that you don’t like very much, it stimulates a part of the brain that experiences pain. And so the brain
naturally enough shifts its attention to something else, like Facebook or Twitter or something like that.
And what the Pomodoro technique does, when you do it you’re setting that timer. You don’t want to sit there
and think , “I’m going to work on this problem and get it all finished. You just want to think, I’ve got 25 minutes
where I just have to work on something.” Don’t even think about what that something is. What that does is it slips

in under your brain’s radar. It doesn’t stimulate so much that pain in your brain; and then that pain in the brain,
research has shown , lasts for 20 minutes.
So if you work for 25 minutes you will suddenly find yourself getting into the flow because you’ve gone past
that painful period. So the Pomodoro technique is effective in many different aspects.
4. Which is an example of using the Pomodoro technique?
A. Reading a novel for 25 minutes.
B. Spending 25 minutes scanning WeChat.
C. Setting a timer for 25 minutes to do a tough task.
D. Attending a lecture for 25 minutes with two minds.
5. What can be inferred about the Pomodoro technique from paragraph 2?
A. The first two minutes is vital.
B. 25 minutes is a magic number.
C. More research is around the corner.
D. You may get discouraged when using it.
6. Why is the tidbit mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To further explain the Pomodoro technique.
B. To arouse interest in the Pomodoro technique.
C. To highlight how to use the Pomodoro technique.
D. To prove the effectiveness of the Pomodoro technique.
7. How does the Pomodoro technique work?
A It boosts your concentration.
B. It helps your mind go faster.
C. It urges you to finish your work.
D. It shortens the pain time in your brain.

Many European countries have been making the shift to electric vehicles and Germany has just stated that they
plan to ban the sale of vehicles using gasoline and diesel as fuel by 2030.
The country is also planning to reduce its carbon footprint by 80-95% by 2050, sparking a shift to green
energy in the country. Effectively, the ban will include the registration of new cars in the country as they will not
allow any gasoline powered vehicle to be registered after 2030. Part of the reason why this ban is being discussed
and carried out is that energy officials see that they will not reach their emissions (排放) goals by 2050 if they
do not reduce a large portion of vehicle emissions.
The country is still hopeful that it will meet its emissions goals, like reducing emissions by 40% by 2020, but

the acceptance of electric cars in the country has not occurred as fast as expected. Other efforts to increase the use
of electric vehicles include plans to build over 1 million hybrid (混合的) and electric car battery charging
stations across the country. By 2030, Germany plans on having over 6 million charging stations installed.
According to the International Business Times, electric car sales are expected to increase as Volkswagen is still
recovering from its emissions scandal. There are currently around 155,000 registered hybrid and electric vehicles
on German roads, dwarfed (使相形见绌) by the 45 million gasoline and diesel cars driving there now.
As countries continue setting goals of reducing emissions, greater steps need to be taken to have a noticeable
effect on the surrounding environment. While the efforts are certainly not in vain, the results of such bans will
likely only start to be seen by generations down the line, bettering the world for the future.
8. The ban is under discussion and in effect partly because .
A. Germans don’t accept electric cars.
B. vehicle emissions won’t be got rid of.
C. vehicle emissions prevent emissions goals being reached.
D. Electric cars may slow down Germany’s economic growth.
9. What will happen after 2030 according to the ban?
A. Gasoline powered vehicle can’t be registered.
B. New cars won’t be allowed to be registered.
C. Diesel powered vehicle can't be registered.
D. Gasoline powered vehicle won’t be allowed to drive.
10. The future of electric cars will be .
A. impossible
B. promising
C. impractical
D. unpredictable
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The development of industry
B. Germany shifts toward green energy
C. Environmental protection in Germany
D. The ban on the driving of gasoline vehicles

The Simple Trick Can Help You Sleep
For those who can’t sleep easily, prepare for the best night’s sleep ever. No more tossing and turning into the
early hours of the morning. No more counting sheep on Sunday evenings. And no more lying, wide-eyed, in the
dark after waking up in the middle of the night.
16
This all-natural solution is called the 4-7-8 method,
and yes, it’s as simple as it sounds. First, get settled into a comfortable position on your bed. Then, simply breathe
in air through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and then breathe the air out slowly
through your mouth for eight more seconds.
1 7
That’s all there is to it! Don’t believe us? Just ask Harvard-educated medical doctor Andrew Weil, who
adopted this exercise from a centuries-long Indian yogi meditation practice. The yogis use this method to achieve
a state of complete relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety. Slowing down your breathing forces the rhythm of your
heart to slow down, too.
1 8
In other words, it’s a natural way to make you calm for your body and mind.
“The theory is that by putting certain rhythms on the breath with your voluntary system, gradually these are
made into the involuntary nervous system,” he said.
1 9
So it's the regularity of doing this over a period
of weeks, months , years that produces the changes that you want.”
There you go!
20
If you’re still tossing and turning, don’t miss these tips from sleep doctors
which are almost guaranteed to give you a better night’s sleep.
A. And that comes with time.
B. Finally , repeat until you fall asleep.
C. It makes the rest of your body relax.
D. That enables you to fall asleep more easily.
E. Here comes the explanation for your sleepless nights.
F. Once you start sticking to it, you can quit counting sheep for good.
G. There's now an easy and expert-approved way to fall asleep in less than a minute.

that after her sisters left for school, she would check the hand-me-downs (旧衣) for a coat that fit.
When the house was quiet. Mama went to the hall closet and pulled out all the old spring coats. But she could
not find a suitable one for Sarah—Sylvia’s were too big, Susan’s too spotted, and Sally's too ragged. The coats were
fine far play. But Sarah had no coat for church and (own and special occasions. Mama told it to Papa when he came
in from the bam (布棚), after feeding the cows.
Papa sat down at the table. “Are you sure Sarah can't wear a hand-me-down?” he said. “It's either a new coat
or a ragged coat” Mama said. Papa frowned, staring out at the front yard. “Sarah has never had a new coat,” Mama
added.
For a long while, nobody spoke. The fire in the wood stove crackled (发出劈啪声). Sarah looked closely at
Papa. Then Papa cleared his throat. “A ragged coat won’t do,” he said. “Sarah, are you old enough to lake care
of a new coat?” “Yes, Papa,“ Sarah said, "I'm old enough to do almost anything.” Papa gave her a serious look.
“Very well,” he said. “While we are in town today, we’ll buy you a coat of your very own.” After they had eaten the
soup, they headed for town in Papa’s old truck.
