The Pomodoro technique is probably one of the most powerful techniques in all of learning. All you have to do
is set a timer for 25 minutes, and then just focus as attentively as you can for those 25 minutes.
Now if you start focusing on and you’re working on, and then you look up at the timer and two minutes have

passed. You may feel like you can’t hold on. And just let the thought go by , and return your focus to whatever you
are working on. And when that 25 minutes is up you relax a little bit. You might wonder why that 25 minutes is the
magic number, and the reality is we don’t really know. There’s not a lot of research on the Pomodoro technique,
which is surprising because it’s so incredibly popular and people find it very useful.
But there’s an interesting tidbit related to the Pomodoro technique, and that is that: when you just think about
something that you don’t like very much, it stimulates a part of the brain that experiences pain. And so the brain
naturally enough shifts its attention to something else, like Facebook or Twitter or something like that.
And what the Pomodoro technique does, when you do it you’re setting that timer. You don’t want to sit there
and think , “I’m going to work on this problem and get it all finished. You just want to think, I’ve got 25 minutes
where I just have to work on something.” Don’t even think about what that something is. What that does is it slips
in under your brain’s radar. It doesn’t stimulate so much that pain in your brain; and then that pain in the brain,
research has shown , lasts for 20 minutes.
So if you work for 25 minutes you will suddenly find yourself getting into the flow because you’ve gone past
that painful period. So the Pomodoro technique is effective in many different aspects.
4. Which is an example of using the Pomodoro technique?
A. Reading a novel for 25 minutes.
B. Spending 25 minutes scanning WeChat.
C. Setting a timer for 25 minutes to do a tough task.
D. Attending a lecture for 25 minutes with two minds.
5. What can be inferred about the Pomodoro technique from paragraph 2?
A. The first two minutes is vital.
B. 25 minutes is a magic number.
C. More research is around the corner.
D. You may get discouraged when using it.
6. Why is the tidbit mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. To further explain the Pomodoro technique.
B. To arouse interest in the Pomodoro technique.
C. To highlight how to use the Pomodoro technique.
D. To prove the effectiveness of the Pomodoro technique.
7. How does the Pomodoro technique work?
A It boosts your concentration.
B. It helps your mind go faster.
C. It urges you to finish your work.
D. It shortens the pain time in your brain.

C
Many European countries have been making the shift to electric vehicles and Germany has just stated that they
plan to ban the sale of vehicles using gasoline and diesel as fuel by 2030.
The country is also planning to reduce its carbon footprint by 80-95% by 2050, sparking a shift to green
energy in the country. Effectively, the ban will include the registration of new cars in the country as they will not
allow any gasoline powered vehicle to be registered after 2030. Part of the reason why this ban is being discussed
and carried out is that energy officials see that they will not reach their emissions (排放) goals by 2050 if they
do not reduce a large portion of vehicle emissions.
The country is still hopeful that it will meet its emissions goals, like reducing emissions by 40% by 2020, but
the acceptance of electric cars in the country has not occurred as fast as expected. Other efforts to increase the use
of electric vehicles include plans to build over 1 million hybrid (混合的) and electric car battery charging
stations across the country. By 2030, Germany plans on having over 6 million charging stations installed.
According to the International Business Times, electric car sales are expected to increase as Volkswagen is still
recovering from its emissions scandal. There are currently around 155,000 registered hybrid and electric vehicles
on German roads, dwarfed (使相形见绌) by the 45 million gasoline and diesel cars driving there now.
As countries continue setting goals of reducing emissions, greater steps need to be taken to have a noticeable
effect on the surrounding environment. While the efforts are certainly not in vain, the results of such bans will
likely only start to be seen by generations down the line, bettering the world for the future.
8. The ban is under discussion and in effect partly because .
A. Germans don’t accept electric cars.
B. vehicle emissions won’t be got rid of.
C. vehicle emissions prevent emissions goals being reached.
D. Electric cars may slow down Germany’s economic growth.
9. What will happen after 2030 according to the ban?
A. Gasoline powered vehicle can’t be registered.
B. New cars won’t be allowed to be registered.
C. Diesel powered vehicle can't be registered.

D. Gasoline powered vehicle won’t be allowed to drive.
10. The future of electric cars will be .
A. impossible
B. promising
C. impractical
D. unpredictable
11. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The development of industry
B. Germany shifts toward green energy
C. Environmental protection in Germany
D. The ban on the driving of gasoline vehicles
C 9. A 10. B 11. B
Part of the reason why this ban is being discussed and carried out is that energy officials see that
they will not reach their emissions (排放)goals by 2050 if they do not reduce a large portion of vehicle
emissions.”
故C 项:vehicle emissions prevent emissions goals being reached.
Effectively, the ban will include the registration of new cars in the country as they will not allow any gasoline
powered vehicle to be registered after 2030.”(实际上,这项禁令将包括在这个国家的新车登记,因为2030 年
While the efforts are
certainly not in vain, the results of such bans will likely only start to be seen by generations down the line, bettering
the world for the future.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a French writer and pilot who used his life experiences to write his
publications. The Little Prince is one of his most famous books, selling about 140 million copies worldwide, which
makes it one of the best-selling and most translated books ever published. Born in Lyon, France in 1900, Saint-
Exupéry’s family was filled with nobility. His father was a manager of an insurance company who died when Saint-
Exupéry was very young.
In 1915, Saint-Exupéry joined a high school in Switzerland. Due to his poor performance in class, Saint-
Exupéry didn’t graduate from the boarding school in 1917. Saint-Exupéry twice tried to apply for the French Navy
Cadet School. However, both times he failed the entry test. Finally, he went to a local college to study architecture.
Again, due to poor grades, he didn’t complete his study.
In 1921, Saint-Exupéry decided to join the French army as a soldier. He trained as a pilot and made his first
solo flight in July of that year. The next year, after he obtained his licence, he was asked to transfer to the air force.
However, his fiancee(未婚妻)and her family believed that joining the air force means meeting lots of risks. In
that case, they were against this staying in the military. Finally, Saint-Exupéry gave in to them and left the military.
Later he took an office job in Paris.
As he had difficulty setting on a career path, Saint-Exupéry began to fly as a pilot again in 1926. It turned out
that he was a successful pilot and made great contributions to his country during World War Ⅱ. Saint-Exupéry’s last
flight was on 31 July, 1944. He left on a wartime mission over occupied France, from which he was never seen
again.
Saint-Exupéry was honoured by the French in France and the French region of Quebec, Canada. His portraits
appeared on the 50-franc notes before the introduction of the euro in France. In Lyon, his birth place, the city’s
international airport was named after him.
12.What do we know about The Little Prince?
A.It is a copy translated from another work.
B.It has been a big hit since it was published.
C.It is about the business of the author’s father.
D.It is about the author’s view on rich family life.
13.Why did Saint-Exupéry take an office job?
A.He performed badly at school.

B.He did poorly in his entry exam.
C.The military’s office refused his application.
D.His fiancee’s family objected to his staying in the air force.
14.Why is Lyon’s airport named after Saint-Exupéry?
A.To celebrate his success.
B.To remember his first flight.
C.To show great respect for him.
D.To introduce him to the world.
15.Where does this text probably come from?
A.A diary.
B.A guidebook.
C.A novel.
D.A magazine.
B 13. D 14. C 15. D
The Little Prince is one of his most famous books, selling about
140 million copies worldwide, which makes it one of the best-selling and most translated books ever published.(
根据第三段“However, his fiancee(未婚妻)and her family believed that joining
the air force means meeting lots of risks. In that case, they were against this staying in the military. Finally, Saint-
Exupéry gave in to them and left the military. Later he took an office job in Paris.(然而,他的未婚妻和她的家人
Saint-Exupéry was honoured by the French in France and the
French region of Quebec, Canada. His portraits appeared on the 50-franc notes before the introduction of the euro

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry was a French writer and pilot who
used his life experiences to write his publications.( Antoine de Saint-Exupéry 法国作家和飞行员,他利用自己的

The Simple Trick Can Help You Sleep
For those who can’t sleep easily, prepare for the best night’s sleep ever. No more tossing and turning into the
early hours of the morning. No more counting sheep on Sunday evenings. And no more lying, wide-eyed, in the
dark after waking up in the middle of the night.

 16

This all-natural solution is called the 4-7-8 method,
and yes, it’s as simple as it sounds. First, get settled into a comfortable position on your bed. Then, simply breathe
in air through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for seven seconds, and then breathe the air out slowly
through your mouth for eight more seconds.

 1 7

That’s all there is to it! Don’t believe us? Just ask Harvard-educated medical doctor Andrew Weil, who
adopted this exercise from a centuries-long Indian yogi meditation practice. The yogis use this method to achieve
a state of complete relaxation, reducing stress and anxiety. Slowing down your breathing forces the rhythm of your
heart to slow down, too.

 1 8
In other words, it’s a natural way to make you calm for your body and mind.
“The theory is that by putting certain rhythms on the breath with your voluntary system, gradually these are
made into the involuntary nervous system,” he said.

 1 9

So it's the regularity of doing this over a period
of weeks, months , years that produces the changes that you want.”
There you go!

 20

If you’re still tossing and turning, don’t miss these tips from sleep doctors
which are almost guaranteed to give you a better night’s sleep.
A. And that comes with time.
B. Finally , repeat until you fall asleep.
C. It makes the rest of your body relax.
D. That enables you to fall asleep more easily.
E. Here comes the explanation for your sleepless nights.
F. Once you start sticking to it, you can quit counting sheep for good.
G. There's now an easy and expert-approved way to fall asleep in less than a minute.

G 17. B 18. C 19. A 20. F
根据划线前句“And no more lying , wide-eyed , in the dark after waking up in the middle of the night.(再也不用
同时G 项中的“an easy and expert-approved way to fall asleep”指代的后文中提及的“This all-natural
solution is called the 4-7-8 method.(这种纯天然的解决方法被称为4-7-8 法)”。
Then, simply breathe in air through your nose for four seconds, hold your breath for seven
seconds, and then breathe the air out slowly through your mouth for eight more seconds.(然后,简单地用鼻子吸
和“Then,…..”
根据划线前句提及“Slowing down your breathing forces the rhythm of your heart to slow down, too.(放慢你的
So it's the regularity of doing this over a period of weeks, months, years that produces the changes
故选A 项。

Debra Ferrell got the standard well wishes on Facebook on her 53rd birthday, but she got some

messages too. One was about a family in Minnesota who had just lost their four-year-old son to cancer. His older
brother, autistic (自闭症) and nonverbal, was especially

      . Could Ferrell help?
That message and the 30 or so others like it were

what Ferrell was looking for. She really
wanted to

      a
wind chime (风铃) with the message “Listen to the wind and know that I am near” . It now hangs in the four-year-
old ’s bedroom, where his brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants.
This is not the first time that Ferrell has decided to give
    28

in 2014, she founded Love with Skin On, an organization devoted to doing good
    29

      near her
home in Roanoke, Virginia, and beyond. Its motto is simple: Be Love, Do Stuff.
Over the years, Ferrell has

callouts, others with help from her grandkids. In another act of

       she shares her favorite inexpensive
and creative gift ideas on Pinterest for others to use.
Ferrell

for everything herself: gift cards, pay -it-forward purchases at drive-throughs, and care
packages, as well as the gas it takes to play fairy godmother. Her family of ten gives her some

      birthday
cash with a warning not to spend it on anyone else, which she
    35

cards for my birthday this year." It's Ferrell's party, and she'll give if she wants to.

Sarah lived in a big family—four children with three sisters older than her. Father worked hard on the farm all
day long to support the family. They had to save every penny to make ends meet.
One winter morning in March, Sarah put on her old spring coat to go out and play. “These buttons don’t
work,” Sarah said lo Mama. Just then, Mama noticed that this coat was too small for Sarah, She promised Sarah
that after her sisters left for school, she would check the hand-me-downs (旧衣) for a coat that fit.
When the house was quiet. Mama went to the hall closet and pulled out all the old spring coats. But she could
not find a suitable one for Sarah—Sylvia’s were too big, Susan’s too spotted, and Sally's too ragged. The coats were
fine far play. But Sarah had no coat for church and (own and special occasions. Mama told it to Papa when he came
in from the bam (布棚), after feeding the cows.
Papa sat down at the table. “Are you sure Sarah can't wear a hand-me-down?” he said. “It's either a new coat
or a ragged coat” Mama said. Papa frowned, staring out at the front yard. “Sarah has never had a new coat,” Mama
added.
For a long while, nobody spoke. The fire in the wood stove crackled Sarah looked closely at
Papa. Then Papa cleared his throat. “A ragged coat won’t do,” he said. “Sarah, are you old enough to lake care
of a new coat?” “Yes, Papa,“ Sarah said, "I'm old enough to do almost anything.” Papa gave her a serious look.
“Very well,” he said. “While we are in town today, we’ll buy you a coat of your very own.” After they had eaten the
soup, they headed for town in Papa’s old truck.

May I assist you?” the clerk asked, after they went inside the clothes store. “Our Sarah needs a good
coat,” Papa said. The clerk said, “Small…In small we have chocolate, cerulean, and charcoa1.’’ “We'll try the
brown one.” Mama said to the clerk. Sarah slid her arms into the sleeves. “I look like a barnyard,” she mumbled in
dismay. But when she slid the blue coat from its hanger, there was a pink coat. “A pink coat!” Sarah cried. “I want
the pink coat. Let me try it!”
The pink coat fit Sarah perfectly, but it seemed that it would only fit one year. “And there’s no one to wear it
again, which is unwise to waste.” said Papa. Sarah wanted to give it up. “It is her color, though,” Mama said. He
looked from the brown coat to the pink coat. “But how can we let Sarah wear a brown coat when she looks like a
flower in this one?” Sarah threw her arms around Papa’s neck and said happily, “I do look like a flower, don’t I?”
“Like a primrose in spring.” Papa said.
