Unit 9
__________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________________
  1. though
It’s hard work. I enjoy it though.
A lthough

 / Though

there are still problems to solve, China’s tree-planting programmes are huge.
She closed her eyes as
    though

  she were tired.
如:a place worth seeing(值得一看的地方),a dictionary worth $50(一本值50 美
Now John is worth talking to.
He isn’t worth getting angry with.
worth

 -ing

正: The film isn’t worth seeing. 误:The film isn’t worth being seen.
(2) “It(形式主语)+be+worth+动词的-ing 形式+……”例如:
It isn’t worth repairing the bike.
Is it worth visiting the city?

 , really

 , very much

 , hardly

 , easily

This is really worth doing.
He has something very much worth saying.
  3. stop 停止
(1) stop doing sth.
We stopped

   talking

when our teacher came in.
(2) stop to do sth.
My father always stop

   to buy

a newspaper on his way home.
(3) stop sb. from doing sth.
You should stop your son making trouble.
4. prevent sb. from doing sth.
  We should prevent

   children

   from

   approaching

  the fire.
keep sb/ sth. from doing sth.
stop sb. from doing sth.
55% of the forest could be gone by
   2030

The girls are playing by (beside) the lake.
He lives by the sea. He lives near the sea.
Jim often goes to work by bike.
3
We’re going by the 9:30 train.
We went to Shanghai by a large ship.
My mother will come back by 6:00.
The house was destroyed by fire.
The house was destroyed with fire.
Someone destroyed the house with fire.)
I practice speaking English by joining an English-language club.
How do you...?

 或
  How can I...?

---How do you learn English?
---I learn English by reading aloud.
6. be careful to do sth.

  be careful about 小心,当心,例如:
  We need to be
    careful

   about

  how we use antibiotics.
care about 关心 take care of 照顾
  careful adj.
carefulness n.
  To
    start

   with

, we haven’t enough money, and secondly we haven’t enough time.
  start with 意为“以… end with 意为“以…
例如:
  Our class starts

   with

  a interesting game.
  The experiment ended

   with

  success.
8. turn
turn on 打开 turn off 关闭 turn up 调大,出现 turn down 调小,拒绝 turn in 交上,
归还
4
turn into 变成 turn out to be 证明是,结果是 turn over 翻转,移交给 take turns 轮流,
依次

I’m sure many great people think about how they can make a difference in the world.
  1
, sometimes little things can make a really big difference. I learned this
  2
  one day five years
ago with my father, when I was just acting like myself—a nine-year-old kid. Papa came home
late from work after 9 p.m., and he

 3
even more tired than usual. His eyes were already
half-closed. I followed him to his bedroom. Papa
  4
up the stairs, slowly lifting his feet one
7
after the other. I was
  5
that I would have to start pushing him. Fortunately, he
  6
  it to the
bedroom on his own.
Papa sat down on the bed and started removing his shoes and socks.
“How was work?” I asked cheerfully.
“Oh, it was OK,” he replied, “It’s just that I’m tired.”
“Oh, um…you want me to leave?”

  7

going to scold me, as he often did when I made some
  8
  .
“No,” he said kindly, “of course I don’t want you to leave.”
I opened my mouth and started
  9
out the Disney movie Lilo&Stitch. Papa always loved
it when I did that, and he
  10

laughing loudly. I was happy that I had made my father laugh
so much.
“Did you like it?” I asked.
“Of course I did,” he said. “Did you know that
  11

you make me laugh, you make me
feel a lot better?”
I was
  12

that I could really do a thing like that.

Good evening, thank you all for coming here to learn about our school’s recycling program.
The recycling is planned as a three-part program: searching, collecting and carrying. The first part,
searching, is the hardest one. Most people don’t like to take the time to separate rubbish and this is why
most recycling programs usually fail. However, we believe that our program will work.
From now on, instead of seeing the usual black rubbish cans all over the school, you will see three
different colored rubbish cans. Pink cans are for paper, blue cans are for bottles, and white cans are for all
the other waste. Just remember: pink — paper, blue — bottles, white — waste. After the rubbish is
collected, it needs to be sorted and then taken to the recycling center.
Since this recycling program is still a volunteer program, we ask for no more than 5 hours per person
in each week. Your job will be to collect all sorts of rubbish and take it to different centers.
If you would like to help, please leave me your name and telephone number and we’ll meet here on
the 15th September right after school. Hope to see you then!

Passenger ships, trade ships, and fishing boats are a normal part of
life on the open sea. However, all their activity creates a great deal of noise
underwater. Scientists from the United States and Canada recently reported
their observations(观察) that the ocean is getting noisier.
Scientists at the University of Victoria have studied the recordings
recorded with equipment placed underwater near the busy shipping lanes off Vancouver Island in Canada.
They say engine(发动机) noise is continuous during the day, and a little less strong at night.
Scientists say it is likely that whales must call out more loudly to be heard over this noise. The noise
could make it more difficult for orca whales to find food. The orcas find fish by producing clicking sounds
and other noises. Loud engine noise could be interfering with their efforts.

Michael Jasny is a policy expert for the Natural Resources Defense Council. He says the rise of
underwater noise is limiting the ability of whales to communicate.
Shipping noise falls across the same frequencies(频率) that these animals use for all their vital(生死
攸关的) behaviors - for feeding, for finding mates, for avoiding predators(捕食者) and for going ahead.
Mr. Jasny says sound travels very effectively underwater. And it is not just whales he is worried
about.
“The whole web of life in the oceans depends on sound. And as more and more research has been
done, it’s been very clear that what we have on our hands is really a major problem. It’s a serious problem.
It’s a global problem. Fortunately, in shipping we have a problem that has a solution.”
One answer is to design
quieter ships. America’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration, or NOAA, has four new ships that are made to be quieter. Michael Bahtiarian works for
Noise Control Engineering, the company which helped design the boats.
Mr. Bahtiarian says the main source of noise pollution is the propeller(螺旋桨). Better shaped
propellers and ship designs can help to reduce noise. NOAA’s ships also have costly engines, which
produce less noise. Mr. Bahtiarian says the technology to make quieter ships does exist and has been used
in the military for some time.

   A. expensive engines produce less noise in the ocean
   B. people should stop making big ships in order to save whales
   C. the other animals in the ocean also depend on sound for living
