As a popular subject of study among evolutionary ecologists, the three-
spined stickleback (三刺鱼) is known for their different shapes, sizes, and behaviours
— they can even live in both sea water and fresh water, and under a wide range of
temperatures. But what makes that?
The researchers tracked six populations of the fish before and after seasonal
changes to their environment, using genome sequencing (基因组测序). Seasonal
changes result in great changes in habitat structure and balance of salt and fresh water, and only those fish able to tolerate these rapid changes survive into the next season.
“These changes probably resemble the habitat shifts experienced by
stickleback populations during the past 10,000 years,” says Professor Barrett.
“We hope to gain insight into the genetic changes that may have resulted from natural
selection long in the past.”
Remarkably, the researchers discovered the evidence of genetic changes
driven by the seasonal shifts in habitats, which mirrored the differences found
between longestablished freshwater and saltwater populations. “These genetic
changes occurred in independent populations over a single season, highlighting just
how quickly the effects of natural selection can be detected,” says Professor
Barrett, “the findings suggest that we may be able to use the genetic differences to
predict how populations may adapt to the environment.”
The research emphasizes the importance of studying species in dynamic
environments to gain a better understanding of how natural selection operates. In the
further research, they plan to investigate how repeatable the observed genetic changes
are, by testing whether they show up year after year. Doing so would demonstrate
their ability to reliably forecast the evolutionary future of these populations.
24.What does the underlined word “that” refer to in Paragraph 1?
A.The threespined stickleback is under a wide range of temperatures.
B.The threespined stickleback is popular with evolutionary ecologists.
C.The threespined stickleback can adapt to different living conditions.
D.The threespined stickleback has different shapes, size, and behaviours.
25.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The difficulties of the research.
B.The purpose of the research.
C.The background of the research.
D.The methods of the research.
26.What is the main reason for the threespined stickleback's survival?
A.Habitat shifts.
B.Genetic changes.
C.Seasonal changes.
D.Independent populations.
27.Why will scientists study the repetition of the genetic changes?A.To know what natural selection is.
B.To study species in dynamic environments.
C.To test the reliability of the present discoveries.
D.To forecast the evolutionary future of certain species.

[2022·青岛市期末考试]I did an experiment last week. No, nothing involving test
tubes or beakers (烧杯). Instead, I experimented with not watching the news right
before I went to bed.
This is a longtime habit of mind so it's probably not surprising that the first
couple of nights I got a little twitchy when news time rolled around and I wasn't
watching. To distract myself, I went to bed a little earlier and read. Wow, what a treat
that was! I love to read but I don't always make the time for it so this felt quite
luxurious. On the nights I didn't read, I spent a little extra time petting my dog, Henry.
He loved it. There's never enough ear scratching for him. The compromise nights
were when I had a book in one hand and was petting the dog with the other. Happy all
around!
The funny thing about happiness is that it's a whole lot easier to feel when you're
not being bombarded (轰炸) by images of bad news. It's not like skipping the late
news means that I don't know what's going on in the world. I still do read, listen to,
and watch news stories. Just not right before I go to bed. That makes it easier to fall
asleep and then stay asleep without dreaming about crime, wars, or natural disasters.
(Although that dream I had about going to the prom might count as a natural
disaster!) It's definitely a much gentler way to end the day. I like it so much that I'm
going to not only continue the no news before bed practice, but I'm also going to
experiment with turning off other electronics earlier in the evening, things like the
computer and smartphone.
Do you have any experience with turning off your electronics early in the
evening? Does setting a particular time, like digital Quiet Hours, work? Please share
any tips you have. Something tells me that this could be a little more challenging for
me than no news.
28.What does the underlined word “twitchy” mean?
A.Angry. B.Sad.C.Anxious. D.Pleased.
29.What did the author do to distract himself from watching news?
A.To treat himself with snacks.
B.To read to his dog.
C.To turn off the TV.
D.To read in bed.
30.What's the result of the author's experiment?
A.He had more time to walk his dog.
B.He was less exposed to images of bad news.
C.He was cut off from the current world.
D.He had nightmares.
31.What does the author intend to do by writing the text?
A.To encourage the readers to cut down time on electronics.
B.To gather the readers' advice in watching TV.
C.To share the effect of watching news.
D.To tell the readers the importance of reading.

[2022·安徽省高三质量检测]There are many ways we can enjoy sport —
watching it on TV or a smartphone, attending an event at a stadium or even playing
the game. But for those who enjoy getting competitive with their computer gaming,
there are realisticlooking games to be played without leaving home. And people's
interest in this type of sport — if that's what we can call it — has gone to a new level.
Initially, grabbing a controller and playing a game was an individual activity. But
around 20 years ago computers became cheaper and the Internet became faster, which
made it much easier for more people to get involved with computer gaming. This led
to gamers connecting with each other around the world, so they could go headtohead
online. It also became a spectator sport, with people watching others play. The whole
experience has been given the name “esports” — Electronic Sports.
Now, huge esports tournaments take place all over the world in big arenas (竞技
场) with large crowds. Diehard enthusiasts, who have become firstrate players, are
now wellknown — some play together in teams. Its top stars can earn millions of
dollars a year, without even breaking into a sweat! And fans from around the worldtune in to watch the action online. The global audience is now estimated at more than
200 million and growing. Annual profits from esports, currently around 650 million
dollars for events, continue to rise with billions more through the video games sales.
Famous football clubs are now trying to get in on the act. England's Football
Association, for example, launched its first esports team this year, known as the
eLions. It recruited (吸收) FIFA 19 players to represent them at the FIFA eNations
Cup. Mark Bullingham, the FA's Chief Executive Officer, said “The FA prides itself
on being a modern, innovative organization that tries to engage and inspire all
generations of football fans.”
But while this virtual version of football might give footballers a chance to get
closer to the real game, some might argue the lack of physical activity means it
shouldn't be called a sport — and that the biggest winners are the companies who
promote and sell esports.
32.What contributed most to the popularity of esports?
A.The support from the public.
B.Cheaper computers and faster Internet.
C.The advanced sports equipment.
D.People's preference for individual activities.
33.What can we infer about esports from Paragraph 3?
A.It has become a big industry.
B.It makes players get rich easily.
C.It will replace traditional sports.
D.It has a great impact on other sports.
34.Why does the author mention the FA in Paragraph 4?
A.To explain why it has become interested in esports.
B.To tell readers it is taking the lead in hosting esports.
C.To show famous football clubs are getting involved in esports.
D.To state the officers are proud of its achievements in esports.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The Rise of Esports
B.The Advantages of Esports
C.Esports Teams: Famous for Star PlayersD.Esports Tournaments: Exciting and Fantastic Events

[2022·武汉部分学校高三起点质量检测]The easy way out isn't always the
easiest. I learned that lesson when I decided to treat my father to a special meal. I
glanced through the cookbook and chose a menu which included homemade
bread. Knowing the bread would take time, I started on it as soon as he left for work.
As I was not experienced in cooking, I thought if a dozen was good, two dozen
would be better, so I doubled everything. As Dad loved oranges, I also opened a can
of orange and poured it all into the bowl. Soon there was sticky dough (生面团)
covered with ugly yellowish marks. Realizing I had been defeated, I put the dough in
the rubbish bin outside so I wouldn't have to face Dad's blame.
I went on preparing the rest of the meal, and when Dad got home we sat down to
eat the meal. He tried to enjoy the meal but seemed disturbed. Twice he got up and
went outside, saying he thought he heard a noise. The third time he left, I went to the
window to see what he was doing.
Looking out, I saw Dad standing about three feet from the rubbish bin, holding
the lid up with a stick and looking into the container. When I came out of the house,
he dropped the stick and explained that there was something alive in the rubbish bin.
Picking up the stick again, he held the lid up enough for me to see. I felt scared. But I
stepped closer and looked harder.
Without doubt it was my work. The hot sun had caused the dough to double in
size and the fermenting yeast (酵母) made the surface shake and sigh as though it
were breathing. I had to admit what the “living thing” was and why it was there. I
didn't know who was more embarrassed by the whole thing, Dad or me.
