My motivation for starting our family tradition of reading in the car was purely selfish:I
could not bear listening to A Sesame Street Christmas for another 10 hours. My three children had
been addicted to this cassette on our previous summer’s road trip.
As I began to prepare for our next 500-mile car trip,I came across a book—Jim Trelease’s
The Read-Aloud Handbook. This could be the answer to my problem,I thought. So I put Roald
Dahl’s James and the Giant Peach into my bag. When I began to read aloud the tale of the boy
who escapes the bad guys by hiding inside a giant peach,my three kids argued and wrestled in
their seats. But after several lines, they were attracted into the rhythm of the words and began tolisten.
We soon learned that the simple pleasure of listening to a well-written book makes the long
miles pass more quickly.Sometimes the books we read became highlights of the trip.I read Wilson
Rawls’s Summer of the Monkeys as we spent two days driving to the beach. We arrived just
behind the power crews restoring(恢复) electricity after a tropical storm. The rain continued most of
the week, and the beach was covered with oil washed up by the storm. When we returned home,I
asked my son what he liked about the trip.He answered without hesitation,“The book you read
in the car.”
Road trips still offer challenges, even though my children now are teenagers. But we continue
to read as we roll across the country. And I’m beginning to see that reading aloud has done more
than help pass the time. For at least a little while,we are not shut in our own electronic worlds. And
maybe we’ve started something that will pass on to the next generation.
4.Why did the author start reading in the car?
A.She wanted to have a better journey.
B.She wanted to keep a family tradition.
C.Her children were addicted to reading.
D.Her children were tired of the cassette.
5.How did the children react after the author read a few lines?
A.They kept fighting.
B.They hid themselves.
C.They soon settled down.
D.They read together aloud.
6.What can we learn about the author and her family’s trip to the beach?
A.They were caught in a storm.
B.They enjoyed reading on the road.
C.They had a good time on the beach.
D.They thought it had passed too quickly.
7.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Better Traveling than Reading
B.Books That Changed My Children
C.Road Trips Full of Challenges
D.Reading Makes Road Trips Great

Keeping a language alive can strengthen people’s sense of identity and most importantly
lead to the preservation of a whole culture. This is probably why a group of Cherokee music artists
decided to create a music album(唱片) exclusively in the Cherokee language,a highly endangered
Native American language.Currently, there are fewer than 2,000 fluent speakers of the languageremaining in the world, and the number is declining every year.
The album, tilted DooAP oaV and pronounced ‘Ah’ ‘Nuh’ ‘Duh’ ‘Nah’
‘Lees’ ‘Gi’,means “Performers” in English. It is comprised of a range of contemporary
styles,including Pop,Reggae,Country,Heavy Metal,Hip Hop,and Folk.With a planned
release date of Labor Day weekend, the record company is using the platform of the National
Cherokee Holiday to give this album as much exposure as possible.
Jeremy Charles,a key figure in getting this album off the ground, has said that “the music
will shine a spotlight on Cherokee artists and speakers, and increase exposure of our culture and
language worldwide”.He aims for the album to be an inspiration to the next generation of
Cherokee language learners.Featuring 12 Cherokee artists ranging from ages 14 to 50,you can see
how this album is going to do a lot for the promotion of Cherokee music and can inspire people of
any age to make music that connects with their heritage(遗产).
The youngest contributor on the album,Lillian Charles,is only in the 8th grade but had a
major contribution to the Goth-pop song Circus—a song she wrote at the age of 12.It originally
written in English, she worked with translators Bobbie Smith and Kathy Sierra to be able to fully
express herself in Cherokee.
Projects like the DooAP oaV album bring a modern approach to revitalizing language and
culture and encourage a younger audience to get involved and start learning the Cherokee
language. On average,a native language is lost forever every two weeks, and these people want
to make sure that the Cherokee language isn’t one of them.
8.What can we learn about the album from paragraph 2?
A.It has various musical styles.
B.It is titled Performers in English.
C.It sings high praise of Labor Day.
D.It was exposed to the public by chance.
9.What’s Jeremy Charles’s expectation of the album?
A.It will make a huge profit for the record company.
B.It can help the 12 artists rise to fame overnight.
C.It will satisfy the fans’ demand for pop music.
D.It can fuel the youth’s interest in Cherokee language.
10.Which can best replace the underlined word “revitalizing” in the last paragraph?
A.Translating. B.Reviewing. C.Restoring. D.Creating.
11.What’s the best title of the text?
A.Alarming! The Cherokee Language Is Dying
B.Amazing! An 8th Grader Is Releasing an Album
C.Bringing Music to Life with Modern Technology
D.Preserving a Language Through the Power of MusicⅡ.七选五

We set off on our journey up Mount Wutai onto its peak to appreciate the mysterious and
beautiful Bodhisattva Lights,ball-shaped lights floating in the whole sky with radiant beams.Seen
from the foot of the mountain, the sky was gray and cloudy. In the distance stood the peak(山顶),
unclear. 1
On the mountainside, our clothing grew wet.The road was slippery and difficult to walk.It
slowed the horses down to a heavy pace.We spent the night at a small hotel. 2 The road was
more slippery than the day before,so we had no choice but to get down from our horses and
walked on foot.
On the way,we were told the unusual phenomenon wouldn’t be observed in the rain.We
sighed with disappointment. 3 And the sun set in the west, the clouds disappeared and the
mist faded.
Eventually,we arrived at the peak, with the sky filled with stars.Late in the night,we got
awake by a shout.“Get up.Hurry up to see the lights!” We moved quickly, threw on a few
pieces of clothing and ran out.It was cold, making our bodies shake from head to foot. However,
our hearts were filled with excitement. 4
Thousands of ball-shaped objects floated slowly in the distance, shining golden beams of
light,as though the whole sky were filled with countless glowing lanterns. The balls moved across
the sky at the same speed. 5 They were light and delicate.Meanwhile,we all just froze there,
speechless with wonder, appreciating the incredible views.
