Passage 1 体裁:说明文 主题:科技创新
(2024·吉林长春·模拟预测)
Huddled in small groups around laptops, 20 Brazilian teenagers are using an app to build a skill that’s vital to
the future of their entire community. The teenagers belong to the Guarani indigenous (本地的) people and they are
fluent in speaking both Portuguese and their mother tongue, Guarani Mbya. But when it comes to writing, they
often use Portuguese as that’s what they were first taught to write in, putting the Guarani Mbya language in its
written form at risk of disappearing. But since March of this year, they’ve been using an app to improve their
ability to write in Guarani Mbya. The app is part of a project funded by IBM to create AI tools to help preserve andexpand the use of indigenous languages in Brazil.
Of the 7,000 or so languages that exist in the world, about a fifth are thought to be endangered, with the
United Nations estimating that half of these will be extinct by 2100 — the majority being indigenous languages.
The movement to prevent indigenous languages from disappearing has prompted a number of tech-centric language
preservation and expansion projects. For example, in New Zealand, an app has been developed to collect oral
recordings of indigenous languages across the region to help speakers boost their everyday use of their native
language.
But embracing technology and the desire to protect culture and language are often at odds in indigenous
communities, as Dr. Burbank has observed. “A minority group that’s fighting to preserve a counterculture (反主流
文化) will create walls around the culture to try not to dilute (削弱) it, because the majority culture is automatically
going to wipe that culture out,” says Dr. Burbank. While many of the indigenous communities Dr. Burbank works
with feel technology could contribute to that dilution, she believes it can benefit indigenous communities.
1.Guarani indigenous teenagers seldom write in Guarani Mbya because __________.
A.they were initially trained to use Portuguese in writing
B.the written Guarani Mbya language is in danger of extinction
C.they intend to break free from their indigenous culture
D.Guarani Mbya makes it hard for them to integrate into the outside world
2.How many languages are estimated to disappear by 2100?
A.About 7,000. B.About 3,500. C.About 1,400. D.About 700.
3.What does the underlined phrase “at odds” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Confusable. B.Sensational. C.Contradictory. D.Consistent.
4.What is the author’s attitude toward using AI for language preservation?
A.Positive. B.Unclear. C.Doubtful. D.Dismissive.
Passage 2 体裁:说明文 主题:医学健康
(23-24高三下·重庆·高三模拟)Inspired by the medical bay of the USS Enterprise from Star Trek (星际
迷航), a research team from the University of Waterloo uses radar technology to monitor people’s health while at
the wheel, turning an ordinary car or truck into a mobile medical center.
Dr. George Shaker, a professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University
of Waterloo, is working with a team of graduate students to combine radar with evolving vehicle technology to
make health checks easier. The idea is to use the time people spend in their cars to gather data on their health for
accurate analysis and preventative treatment — without the need for any type of wearable.
The radar, smaller than a USB thumb drive, is placed into the vehicle cabin and sends out signals that detect
human vibrations (颤动), which are then sent back to the radar. The built-in AI system collects and analyzes the
data to build a medical picture and identify any potential conditions. At the end of the driver’s journey, the system
sends the report directly to their cell phone for review.
For Shaker and his team, the challenge was evolving the tech to identify changes in breathing patterns orheart rhythms that signify potential health issues related to cardiovascular conditions as well as respiratory system
conditions.
“We focused on enhancing data collection for exact information related to people’s respiratory and
cardiovascular systems and teaching the AI how to make medical interpretations from this data. Another important
consideration was personal privacy and security — no data is stored on the cloud; it is sent to the monitored
person’s cellphone only,” said Ali Ghara, the lead Ph. D.student on the project.
The research team is building on this work to expand the radar technology’s capabilities to monitor all
vehicle occupants’ overall health and well-being, run diagnostics and generate quality medical reports that flag any
issues that need attention, as well as assist with emergency communication in the event of an accident.
5.What can we learn about the radar technology?
A.It provides more precise health data than wearables.
B.It creates medical pictures to reveal healthy secrets.
C.It sends the health report to the driver’s phone for review.
D.It combines with vehicle technology to assess the driver’s health.
6.What can be inferred from Ali Ghara’s words in paragraph 5?
A.The AI needs training to collect health data. B.AI’s interpretation of medical data is accurate.
C.Cellphones monitor personal privacy and security. D.The team is improving data collection and
analysis.
7.What does the follow-up study aim to do?
A.Ensure the privacy of medical reports. B.Warn the drivers of potential accidents.
C.Enhance health monitoring for all passengers. D.Apply the radar technology across vehicles.
8.Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A.Ph. D.Students Build USS Enterprise on Wheels B.Drivers Beware: Radar Spying on Your
Heartbeats
C.Healthy Driving: Radar Monitors Health in Vehicles D.Radars May Know Your Conditions Before You
Do
Passage 3 体裁:说明文 主题:社会热点
(2024·河北保定·二模)If you’ve been on BookTok, an online community where readers recommend,
review and theorize about their favorite books, authors and genres, you’ve probably heard of Rebecca Yarros’
Fourth Wing. On BookTok, the release of Fourth Wing came with hype (炒作) around a mix between romance and
fantasy. The novel was published last May and its sequel (续集) followed just six months later.
But questions came: Are publishers and authors publishing books too quickly, and does this affect the quality
of writing?
On the day of the sequel’s release, Yarros and her publisher, Red Tower Books, were met with much
criticism about her misuse of a language’s grammar in the novel. Many argued that the mistakes could have beenavoided if the publishers had hired someone to proofread (校对) the language.
So what does BookTok have to do with this? It was one of the reasons why within the first week of Fourth
Wing being published, the book quickly shot up to the top of the New York Times Best Sellers list despite criticism.
With the rising readers, it isn’t uncommon for both publishers and authors to use that hype to their
advantage. This was likely a reason why the series, originally including three books, was dragged into a five-book
series.
This is kind of what fast fashion is all about. Fast fashion refers to the process of clothing manufacturing that
moves from production/design to stores quickly to keep up with current trends. These pieces are often cheap and
low-quality and sent to stores with the hope of selling out quickly. The same approach used in the publishing world,
thanks to BookTok to some degree, could lead to decreasing book quality when writing and editing aren’t able to
reach their maximum potential.
This isn’t to say that books like Fourth Wing are bad just because they’re hyped. But abandoning developed
work for crowd-pleasers doesn’t do all readers justice. These worries about the quick turnover in the publishing
industry aren’t directed towards independent authors who carefully write, edit and publish themselves, but rather
towards those who overlook the importance of everything that goes into the writing process.
9.Why does the author raise questions in the text?
A.To doubt readers’ judgment. B.To keep the text developing.
C.To highlight BookTok’s advantages. D.To provide background information.
10.What was the situation of Fourth Wing after its release?
A.It enjoyed popularity. B.It faced little criticism.
C.It was publicly rejected. D.It didn’t sell well in stores.
11.Which of the following shows the author’s opinion?
A.Book quality is vital in the publishing industry.
B.Books like Fourth Wing are not good ones.
C.Authors should avoid doing too many duties.
D.BookTok shouldn’t be to blame for fast fashion.
12.What is the best title for the text?
A.BookTok Is Misleading Consumers in Reading.
B.Are Those Books Posted Online Worth Reading?
C.Fast Fashion Emerges in the Publishing Industry.
D.Can the Publishing Industry Adapt to Challenges?
