endangered and recognizable marine species are named here.
Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle
The Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle, also known as the Atlantic Ridley Sea Turtle, is endangered as the rarest and
smallest sea turtle.
Distributed throughout the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. Atlantic seaboard, they gather off the coast in northeastern
Mexico and come ashore in large groups to lay eggs every year. As marine reptiles (爬行动物), they are threatened
by oil spills, lack of food and marine pollution.

As a rare marine mammal, Vaquita is on the edge of extinction only a half-century after its first sighting.
Extensive fishing in the Gulf of California has endangered this marine species, resulting in a gradual drop in
population since the 1940s. According to reports, there are only a dozen of these marine mammals left in the world
since the percentage of decline in their population was as much as 90% since 2011.
Whale
Fin Whale is the second-largest mammal on the planet after Blue Whale and it is also a victim of hunting.

Passage 2
Washington, DC is a theatre town. Here’s where you can get the best performances and
cultural experiences offered for every taste in the nation’s capital.
Kennedy Center
Kennedy Center hosts hundreds of world-class performances each year and is home to the National Symphony
Orchestra and the Washington National Opera. The Suzanne Farrell Ballet also counts Kennedy Center as its
performance headquarters. The company—under the direction of Farrell—was first invited to perform there in 1993
and has since become one of the venue’s most famous attractions.Woolly Mammoth Company
Woolly Mammoth Company is an experimental theatre that welcomes original plays that push the boundaries
of live theatre. The New York Times has called it “Washington’s most daring theatre company”, and the half dozen
plays Woolly produces each year continue to live up to that reputation.
Shakespeare Theatre Company
For more than 25 years, Shakespeare Theatre Company has committed itself to serving as the nation’s classical
theatre. It operates out of two spaces, including Sidney Harman Hall at the Harman Center, which seats 775, and the
Lansburgh Theatre, which seats 451. The shiny, glass-walled Harman Center showcases classic Shakespeare plays,
modern updates and Shakespeare-inspired original shows.
Wolf Trap
For locals, summer isn’t complete without at least one trip to Wolf Trap, the only national park dedicated to
the performing arts. The venue is best-known for performances of touring artists. The open-air theatre offers covered
seating, but when the weather warms up, we suggest buying seats on the grassland and packing a picnic.

Passage 3
Winter is for working hard; summer is for playing hard. From the Bahamas
to Amsterdam, we have several most appealing summer vacation spots for you to choose from.
The Bahamas
While there is a risk of getting rained on during hurricane season, June generally sees mild weather, fewer
crowds and significantly lower prices. While some resorts in the Out Islands may close, New Providence and Paradise
Island remain open year-round. It’s a good choice for families looking for a taste of relaxing island living.
Mackinac Island, MI
Mackinac Island, 20 minutes by boat from either the Upper or Lower Peninsula of Michigan, comes alive on
summer weekends. Most of its roughly 4 square miles is parkland, suitable for hiking and cycling. Be sure to take in
the beautiful architecture—Victorian cottages that date back to just after the Civil War. You can have a taste of times
gone by; cars were banned more than a hundred years ago, and horse-drawn carriages are still used to get around
today.
Amsterdam
Summer is the ideal time to visit this city. The gray skies have lifted, festivals abound and events to enjoy
include the Open Garden Days, when visitors can peek into the private gardens behind the beautiful houses that line
the famous canals. You can experience urban adventure, crossing Amsterdam’s thousands of bridges and waterways
by bike and by boat in search of the perfect brown café.
Ocean City, MD
This East Coast beach town is best known for its boardwalk, which is known for old-school amusement rides.
Cycling in the town is also a great pleasure. Grab your wallets and feast on hard-shelled crabs at Hooper’s crab house
or drink in the sunset with a local beer in hand from Fager’s Island Restaurant & Bar’s large bayfront decks
Parking is free with your consuming receipt. You can’t miss a classic walk along the boardwalk and the taste of
Thrasher’s vinegar and Old Bay French fries

Passage 4
Nowadays, more and more emphasis is being placed on a building’s“green” certification. On Earth Day, look through four noteworthy green buildings from around the world. One
Central Park (Sydney, Australia)
A park at the foot of the building literally continues up the structure, as vegetation of 250 species of Australian
plants and flowers cover One Central Park. An architectural website says it has 25% less energy consumption
compared with a conventional building of its size.Shanghai Tower (Shanghai, China)
Shanghai Tower has a transparent second skin wrapped around the building which creates a zone of captured air
that serves as natural ventilation (通风), reducing energy costs. Besides, 270 wind devices incorporated into the
right side power its outside lights.Marco Polo Tower (Hamburg, Germany)
Each floor of Marco Polo Tower is turned a few degrees away from the one below, around an axis (轴线). This
allows for recessed (嵌入式) buildings that protect residents from direct sun. This tower also includes many other
green features. There is a heat exchanger on the roof that turns warm air into a cooling system. And the natural
ventilation can make residents sleep soundly without being disrupted by outside noise.Torre Reforma (Mexico
City, Mexico)
Torre Reforma rises to 807 feet and stands tall on energy-saving measures, too. The tower’s slimness maximizes
the amount of natural light let in, which in turn cuts down on the need for electric lights. And when the weather
permits, controls can automatically open windows to let air in.

Getting into college is a big step for high school graduates, and it comes with a lot
of changes. For most students, it’s the first time they’re living away from home and managing their own life. Not
surprisingly, adapting to this new lifestyle can be challenging. The following four tips will make high school graduates
better prepared for college life.
Goal setting
When setting goals, whether they’re academic, career, or personal, re-member they should be attainable but not
too easy, so that you really have to push yourself to achieve them, and feel rewarded when you do. Writing down
your goals and breaking down each huge, long-term goal into smaller more practical ones can help make it feel more
real, and writing out a plan for achieving it can give you a roadmap to success.
Interpersonal skills
At college, you will interact with fellow students, professors, librarians, and many others. Strong interpersonal
skills will help you build relationships during this time, and get more out of them. If you feel that your interpersonal
skills need some work, practice asking thoughtful questions and listening closely, develop your understanding by
putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, and enhance your self-confidence.Studying
With fewer in-class hours and more on-your-own learning, you’re required to really digest learning material
rather than simply memorize facts. To be successful in college you’ll need to learn how to integrate large amounts of
information obtained through reading, do research, and write papers. Organization is the key, so if you are not someone
who is naturally organized, set up your study schedule.
Budgeting
Managing money is a critical life skill, and for many, it is at college that they develop it for the first time. Start
by estimating your financial balance. Then give high priority to the expenses on basic needs and determine how much
money to set aside every month to cover those costs. Don’t forget about savings…and the fun stuff(movies, dinners
out), too.
36. Who is this passage most probably written for?
A. College teachers.
B. University graduates.
C. High school teachers.
D. Would-be college students.
37. What is the author’s suggestion for reaching a huge goal?
A. Divide it into smaller, more achievable ones.
B. Reward oneself for each goal one has set.
C. Purchase a clear, updated roadmap.
D. Push oneself to an upper level.
38. One of the suggested ways to enhance your interpersonal skills is to ________.
A. prepare complicated questions
B. try on someone else’s shoes
C. listen to others carefully
D. take advantage of others
39. What is the key to successful college study according to the author?
A. Being well-organized.
B. Being well-informed.
C. Effective reading skills.
D. Reliable research methods.
40. To learn how to manage money, the first thing to do is________.
A. save money for financial investment
B. estimate one’s income and expenses
C. set aside money for fun activities

When starting college, most students enjoy a week's stay on campus before classes
actually begin. What should you do with that time? Below are several tips to ease(使熟悉) yourself into college
life.
Participating in Campus Welcome Activities
Most universities host welcome events before the academic year officially begins, including freshmen
orientations (迎新会),campus picnics, and entertainments like concerts.
Participating in such events is a great way to learn about school facilities and understand campus culture: What
do students do for fiin? What are their favorite classes? What is the history of your university? It can help you
observe campus life outside the classroom.
Exploring Campus
Getting to know where essential campus resources are—such as the student advising center, psychological
services, and the tutoring center~~will make your first few weeks on campus a lot easier, because you won't have to
look for them while still getting used to your classes.
Take some time to check out the buildings where your classes will be held. This will prevent you from getting
lost in the first few days of classes, and familiarize you with how long it takes to get from place to place. If you're
worried about taking classes one after another in different buildings, a quick test run won't hurt. That way, you will
avoid potential time delays in getting to your classes.
Starting a Routine
Before getting too excited about all of the fun things you will be able to do during the week, remember that
you do have a pretty big schedule change coming up. Starting classes means being in different places at different
times, so it’s a great idea to start getting used to that routine right this week.
What helps you most is to schedule your sleep. Following the planned time will ensure you have enough sleep
to get to those early classes and stay wide awake.
If you have other daily routines, such as exercising or talking on the phone with family, work those into your
day-to-day life before classes start so that you get a better idea of how they fit in with your schedule.

38. When is it best for freshmen to start getting used to the new routine?
A. On the first day of their classes.
B. Before the orientation week.
C. After their first-day classes.
