The days when art was an Olympic sport
Did you know that creating works of art used to be an Olympic competition? 1 In the first year, Walter
Winans became the first and the only Olympian to win medals for both art and sports. Despite this seemingly
optimistic start, the idea of the arts being included in the Olympic Games soon met with disinterest, finally resulting
in the removal of the art competition from the Olympic Games.
2
The idea to include art in the Olympics came from Baron Pierre de Coubertin, who was the founder of the
International Olympic Committee, which created the modern Olympics. Coubertin believed that the arts and sports
were linked and was impressed by anyone who had a firm command of both a sport and an artistic discipline(项目).
Why aren’t the arts included in the Olympics today?
For starters, only amateurs were allowed to compete in the arts part of the Olympics. 3 Having artists
of average quality competing while only the most competent athletes were allowed to compete created a dramatic
divide and gave the impression that the arts were not as important as sports.
Secondly, works of art created had to have sports as the subject matter. 4 Limiting the subjects also
contributed to making the arts part of the Olympic Games boring to the general public.
Finally, one of the biggest reasons was that the arts are subjective. Sports can be judged by time and distance,
making it easy to determine who is the winner. 5 This difficulty in judging a definite winner resulted in the
arts part becoming a non-competitive exhibition that ran for the duration of the Olympic Games.
A.Why was art made an Olympic discipline?
B.What is a discipline in the Olympic Games?
C.This rule made the objects produced seem really boring.
D.The arts, on the other hand, are not quite so easy to judge
E.However, the arts part of the Olympics Games was soon abandoned
F.This means that many famous artists were banned from participating.
G.For 36 years, from 1912 to 1948, artists participated in the Olympic Games.2.(2023年河南省平汝名校高三试题)
The act of making and being a friend is as simple as it is difficult. Here area few tips to help you make new
friends as well as to take better care of the friendships you already have.
6 . It’s a little bit awkward to reach out to somebody you don’t know well—whether that’s sending
the first text message or starting small talk in the elevator. But you have to accept it. Otherwise you can’t make any
new friends.
Remember that people will like you more than you think they will. 7 . Gillian Sandstrom, a senior
lecturer in psychology at the University of Essex in the UK, has done research on something called the “liking
gap”, which says that the little voice in your head telling you that somebody doesn’t like you very much is wrong.
8 . Instead, remember that when you talk to someone else, you’re actually brightening their day.
Invest in activities that you love. Ask anyone about how to make friends and they will most likely tell you to
try a new hobby. It might sound empty, but it works. 9 . Then people will be drawn to you because you’ll
be in the right place.
Be present. The planet is warming, and there’s so much good television out there to watch. We get it. But if
you want to keep your friendships, you have to show up for them. 10 .
A.So don’t listen to it
B.Accept the awkwardness
C.Do the things you’re enthusiastic about
D.You don’t have to be interested in just one thing
E.You have to listen and notice things about your friend
F.We have a few tips for being present and engaged with your friends
G.Actually, this advice is based on a well-known theory and some field research

Mental Health Crisis Among Teens Demands a New Approach
Since the CDC released its survey results last month showing alarmingly high rates of sadness and depressive
thoughts among teens, fingers have been pointed from two sides at the causes of this crisis. 11 . Others
say that today’s more secular(世俗的)culture has confused our most vulnerable young people. But neither side
seems to grasp the true urgency of the issue.
According to the CDC’s findings, more than one in five of the 17,000 high school students surveyed reported
mental breakdown. Their rates of sadness and hopelessness are the highest in a decade, reflecting an increasingtrend exacerbated by society’s isolation(隔离)and stress. 12 .
Parents as well as teachers and others who have direct contact with children must accept this preventive
approach. It is crucial that they not be afraid to ask direct questions about depressive thoughts. 13 . It is
also especially important that parents understand what help is available to their children.
14 . For example, we can demand equity equality, which means insurance coverage(保险范围)for
behavioral illnesses health issues that is for physical , thus reducing the financial burden. We can also urge our
congressmen to fund health programs and expand mental health professions. 15 . Put the politics aside.
There are lives in the balance.
A.And they should resist the false idea that raising a question creates a risk that was not there before.
B.This means that we must put aside our disagreements and approach this issue as a matter of life and death.
C.Some have argued that the climate issue has created an existential threat and accompanying anxiety.
D.Hospitalization may also be appropriate when the person in question shows an immediate danger to
themselves.
E.At the macro(宏观的)level, our country can do so much more to help people struggling with mental health
problems and their families.
F.It’s time to stop blaming and turn our attention to this generation of struggling teenagers.
G.It’s time for those who have the power to amplify(放大)their voices and drive change to focus on helping
teenagers and families access the help they need.

Anger is the most destructive emotion. When you are in a temper, you make hasty ill-considered decisions that
you will probably regret. You will also regret reckless language spoken without thought. 16 Here are some
ways that you can combat the causes of anger.
17 You have to accept that sometimes things do go wrong and that people are not always lovely. Try
to accept that other people do behave in ways that will make you both frustrated and angry. Often, there might be
an excellent reason why a person acted in away that you found unacceptable.
Realizing that no one is perfect is a good start to avoiding getting angry. 18 Neither will they behave
in the same way that you would in a given situation.
Reacting angrily is a hard habit to break. The trick is to avoid reacting when faced with a situation that usually
angers. Anger is a negative reaction, but in this type of situation, there is no value in reacting by forming positive
thoughts. 19 This way, your anger will not get the emotional food it needs to survive.Don’t take the easy way when you get angry. We all get tempted to throw something, hit something, or scream
when we are angry. You might say you feel better after an angry outburst, but that is just the after-effect of the
adrenalin (肾上腺素) your body released while you were angry. A reaction like that is the easy way. It is much
harder to stay calm, to walk away from conflict, or to take a deep breath and act normally. 20
A.Stop trying to manage your anger.
B.What can be done to control anger?
C.You need to learn not to respond at all.
D.That, however, is what you must do if you are to stop anger.
E.You need to change your attitude to the way the world works.
F.Taking positive steps will help you overcome feelings of anger.
G.Also, you need to accept that not everyone has the same standards as you.

As we walked along the street recently, my friend suddenly sighed, “How I miss the ice-cream my grandma
used to buy me after school!” 21 , which cost her 9.8 yuan, almost 10 limes higher than the “grandma ice
cream”.
But it was just one of the fair-priced treats. 22 It was written by a user who claimed he “randomly
picked a plain-looking ice-cream” in a store, and was shocked when the register showed it was 68 yuan. He bought
it anyway, but said that every bite tasted more bitter than sweet. “Never pick any brand of ice-cream you’re not
familiar with,” the Weibo user wrote.
I miss the good old days too, but on second thoughts, I don’t believe that some expensive ice-cream means the
market is “corrupted”. 23 . Consumption upgrades may boost demand and expensive ice-cream exists
because some consumers like it.
Zhao Xuekuan, a senior ice-cream dealer agrees with me. His shop has probably the widest variety of ice-
creams m the market. 24 , but young customers favor fancier ones. They are quite particular about the
ingredients, expecting they provide not only good tastes, but also high protein and low calories.
25 . It’s a good thing that recently, the State Administration for Market Regulation issued a new rule
that goods must be sold with a clearly marked price tag, or the retailer will be fined up to 100, 000 yuan. Let the
fair play carry on and consumers will make their own choices.
A.They don’t choose cheaper ones
B.The other day I read a post on WeiboC.While walking, she was licking on one
D.The development of a market has its own rules
E.For the past few months, many cities went through lockdown
F.Of course, market supervisors should still monitor ice-cream pricing closely
G.He said that the bestsellers in his shop are always classic types that cost less than 5 yuan each

People often throw a party to celebrate a variety of occasions. For example, birthdays, graduations, holidays,
the end of the semester. the beginning of summer, and so on. If you have ever thrown a party, you must be aware of
the biggest problem of waste. 26 .Where does all of this rubbish go? It will end up in the landfills. In order
to change this situation, it’s important to decrease waste to the most.
27 . As a matter of fact, e-invitations are quick, easy, and more modern than traditional paper invites.
28 . If there are any people in your crowd who say it’s tacky (俗气的)to use e-cards, tell them it’s tackier to
pollute the environment by using traditional ones. That should keep them quiet.
Reuse and recycle. Reduce waste by buying party foods (with less packaging) and send guests home with
leftover shacks. Use plates you can wash and reuse, rather than hand out disposable paper plates for people’s pizza.
Make it easy for your guests to recycle. 29 , making it obvious that one is for real rubbish and the other is
for recycled goods.
Allow each person only one cup. Since everyone has the same cup, it is quite easy to mix up the cups. After
you put it down for a second, you can’t recognize which cup belongs to you. Then, you will reach for a totally new
one. As the result, after the party, you will find many cups are thrown away, causing a lot of waste. 30 .
A.Make full use of paper invitations
B.Send e-invitations instead of paper ones
C.It’s also the environmentally soundest choice
D.It’s a good idea to allow guests to take their cups away
E.Put out two rubbish cans and write something on them clearly
F.Imagine the mess left from all the parties that are held in the world
G.Try a new system of handing each guest a cup that you mark with their name

Digital technologies are taking up too much of our time and attention. Many of us will spend a significant part
of our lives staring at screens, missing out on satisfying relationships and feeling more emotional pain. For manyyears, we’ve been taught that the solution to this potential harm is some form of digital detox (脱瘾), which mainly
shows us what not to do after our digital addiction. 31 Try the following three steps to achieve balance in
your and your family’s digital life:
Determine your problem times
Identify the times and situations when being on screens is making your life worse. It could be when you are
streaming a TV series right before bed, feeling depressed afterward and losing hours of sleep. Or you could be
getting stuck on your device at the dinner table and end up getting distracted. 32 Identify your top two or
three problem situations.
33
Once you identify the pain points, for example, scrolling (滚动浏览) on TikTok for hours keeps you from
sleeping and makes you feel depressed afterward), ask yourself: What is screen time replacing and what goals is it
serving? In other words, what are you actually hungry for? You might be endlessly scrolling because you want to
feel uplifted at the end of the day. Write down the things you really want.
Try a substitute
34 It’s crucial to pick something that consistently makes you feel good. For example, if your goal is
social connection, make plans for a nice meal with a friend or take that weekly meeting in person rather than via
Zoom. If your goal is inspiration, schedule time for oil painting, reading historical fiction or whatever it is that
uplifts you. 35 And at last, you will become empowered, healthy and wise digital citizens.
A.Identify your true desire.
B.Determine your pain points.
C.Pretty soon, these replacements will make you feel more satisfied.
D.But the only way to truly gain control is to take positive steps in advance.
E.Or maybe you are inefficient at work because you’re doing too much online shopping.
F.Ask yourself how you can meet those needs through something other than screen time.
G.If your digital life is out of balance, reducing time on devices is an important first step.

What a comedian can teach you about managing stress
We often accept stress as part of the cost of modern life, but it really doesn’t have to be. We all know that
laughter is the best medicine. 36 People who can laugh at their own misfortunes bounce back faster and
stronger. Here is what a comedian says about coping with stress. You can try to find a different perspective. 37 Once a friend of mine fell asleep in the middle of a
class. His teacher decided to make fun of him by inviting students to applaud, wondering whether my friend would
applaud along when he woke up. He did and the whole class burst outlaughing. After learning everything, he was
both embarrassed and ashamed of course but after a while, my friend laughed. “If this had happened to someone
else, it would have been amusing. So it’s no less funny, just because it happened to me. “
38 There’s no doubt that we all experience great stress now and then. We’ve all been personally
affected, in some way. You might not have felt like laughing at the time But now, looking back, you could consider
all of the strange aspects of the experience and all of the things you did to keep active or simply stay sane (神志正
常的) .
When you share stories with your friends, you can choose to share stories of trauma (创伤) and pain, or you
can choose to lift their spirits with stories of hope and growth. 39 Take the exact same story and change
the focus from “feel sorry for me” to “laugh with me”. Keep in mind that we’re all in this together, that we all share
the same ridiculous experiences, and that we can laugh together at whatever life throws at us. 40
A.Always share a good story.
B.Why not do what comedians do?
C.You can also look again and laugh.
D.But laughter does more than cheer you up.
E.Then you are able to make a simple choice.
F.In this way. you will say goodbye to stress forever.
G.If you have trouble seeing the funny side, you may find the following inspiring.

For most people, nothing is better than having an iced beer after you are back home in hot summer. 41
Why? Just for the sake of your own health and the happiness of your family. Now good news for you. From now on
you needn’t feel guilty just because you love beer. On the contrary, the benefits of drinking beer are obvious. But
there is still one IMPORTANT point I have to make clear. 42
1. Beer reduces risk of heart disease You can easily reduce the risk of heart disease by 30% or more if you are
one of the individuals who drink a pint of beer per day. The result is totally opposite if you drink too much beer. Be
careful with your portions.
2. 43
Beer prevents diabetes due to the alcohol content which increases insulin (胰岛素) sensitivity. Also, beer isrich in dissolvable fiber that is so needed if the individual suffers from diabetes.
Beer minimizes risk of cancer Xanthohumol (抗氧化剂黄腐酚) is found in beer, which is very important
since it has anti-cancer properties. Drinking beer in moderation speeds up chemical reactions that keep off the risk
of prostate cancer (前列腺癌) in males. 44 Strange? But it is true. That is because the drink contains
components that decrease the risk of breast cancer.
4. Beer manages blood pressure
According to the recent studies carried out by Harvard researchers, middle-aged women who drink beer in
moderation were much less likely to develop high blood pressure. Other alcoholic drinks do not have the same
properties.
5. Beer treats dandruff (头皮屑)
45 The high content of vitamin B and yeast (酵母菌) will make your hair smooth and silky. Go and
have a try.
You’ll be surprised to find the annoying dandruff finally gone.
A.Beer lowers risk of diabetes.
B.Beer improves your oily skin.
C.Believe it or not, women should also drink beer.
D.At the same time, you may be a little nervous and guilty.
E.Some people prefer a beer to some pills when they get a cold in summer.
F.Remember it is how much beer you consume that matters to your health.
G.Beer is much healthier than all the shampoos and conditioners (护发素) that you see on the shelves in the
supermarket or in advertisements.

Giving generously and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others. 46
Let me start with the idea of giving generously. 47 For example, my husband and I have family
members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests, but we rarely receive a
“thank you”. Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I suppose we are. But when we
give, we shouldn’t be giving for the purpose of getting gratitude or praise. Rather, we should be giving because it is
a good thing.
The good news is that when we lead our life being nice to others, our life runs more smoothly. 48 But
if you practice being generous, most of your relationships will improve.
At the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully. I truly believe that you cant say “thank you”enough when you receive.
49 Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their
students. Do you think it unnecessary to thank them when receiving just because a task is part of someone’s job
description? That’s wrong!
50 It is good for us to say “thank you” because we regularly need to remind ourselves how lucky we
are. And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days.
If you are looking for a way to improve your life, I can give you one: Give generously and receive gratefully.
A.So often we get lazy about expressing gratitude.
B.Thus, saying “thank you” can bring us good luck.
C.If you are generous, some people will use you.
D.In return, we are to help others by giving them our time or money.
E.I think people are unwilling to be generous to others for fear of being used.
F.Yet,why do we have such difficulty achieving these things in our relationships?
G.Words of appreciation make others feel good about themselves like nothing else.

People say water can improve health and memory. But now some experts say that to think drinking water
equals health is taking things too far and that hydration(水合作用)is about the balance between electrolytes(电解
质)like sodium and the water in your body.
Then. how much water do you need to drink? Many say you should drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water a day.
Not so, some experts say. 51 A 200-pound person who hikes 10 miles in the heat needs more water than a
120-pound office manager in a temperature-controlled building.
52 Someone with a heart condition or kidney stones has one level of need. A person taking diuretic
drugs(利尿药)may need a different amount of water. You may need to change the amount you are drinking if you
lave been ill with vomiting or diarrhea.
Water is a better choice than sugary sodas or fruit juices. 53 One popular idea is that caffeine or alcohol
will make your body lose much water. But one study showed the effect is not significant. You also get water from
what you eat. Fruits, vegetables, and soups all add to the intake of water. Your body will tell you if you are hydrated
enough. You don't have to think about it or add up the ounces you drink. 54
Electrolytes are essential minerals. 55 Some sports drinks ads say you need to add electrolytes to stay
healthy. But some experts say that your body produces electrolytes. You may need more water if you exercise a lotduring the heat of the day. Otherwise, most people get enough electrolytes from food.
A.Just drink then you are thirsty.
B.They are vital to many functions in the body
C.It gives you more energy and makes you look good.
D.Instead, your body and the activities you attend matter.
E.It is also necessary to set a timetable about when to drink water.
F.The amount of water you need in a day also depends on your health.
G.But when it comes to hydration, any drink can add water to your system.

Shyness is normal and it is not considered as a mental problem. All people have been shy at one time or
another. Even the most confident people experienced being shy. 56 .
You probably are wondering why you are shy. It may be because of the environment you were used to or the
way you were brought up. Certain events or incidents in the past may also lead to the reason why you are shy now.
57 Most shy people have shy parents and relatives and it is not surprising to find out that they too have
become shy persons.
One of the negative sides of being shy is having the tendency to be passive. Most of the time shy people can’t
stand up for themselves and what they believe is right. 58 This apparently influences their social life as
well as work, family and other aspects of their life.
While shyness has negative aspects, it has positive sides. Shy people are usually good observers and do not get
themselves into too much trouble because they try to observe their environment or any situation before they act.
59 They can also make great friends. Since they have difficulties in social scenes, making friends seems to be
a must. Therefore, they value their friends wholeheartedly and have proven to be loyal and thoughtful friends.
60 Some of them born with shy parents have successfully battled against being shy. This contributes
to their constant self-improvement, developing self-esteem and trying to be exposed to new environments.
A.But in most cases, shyness proves to be genetic.
B.They are sensitive and accustomed to getting suspicious.
C.Because some people are born to be shy, they let it go hang.
D.So if you’re feeling shy, don’t worry because you are not alone.
E.They are not hot-headed and think twice before making any decisions.
F.Although shyness is something from birth, it can be improved over time.
G.They avoid crowds by nature and stay away from groups and social interactions.13.(2024届江苏省徐州市沛县高三模拟 )
For the holiday gathering, you may be wondering how you’re going to pull it off. Before we go into the
specifics, a few words of general advice: You don’t have to throw the party your parents did. 61
We talked to a party-planning expert, Miller. Here’s her advice on how to host a stress-free holiday gathering
without losing your mind.
62
The best way to avoid being exhausted is to be prepared. Many seasoned hosts set their tables several days in
advance. “Always pretend your event is a few days before.” Miller says. 63 She recommends cleaning the
house, rounding up an extra dining chair and buying drinks a few days in advance.
Pick a serving setup.
Before you choose your menu, determine your serving style. 64 If you’ve got the space for it, a
family-style meal — where people sit around a table and food is passed on big plates — can cut down on the need
for complicated decorations. “Food can be part of the design, so you’re not going crazy with flowers or anything,”
she says.
Embrace a mixed menu.
The pandemic has made takeout an option not only for family dinners, but also for entertaining, because many
restaurants now offer specific holiday dinner dishes to take home. 65 “You can do a party with literally no
cooking,” Ramos says. “I like to live in the in-between, but it’s up to you.” Time- and stress-savers include relying
on make-ahead dishes.
A.This is your show.
B.Dress the house in your own style.
C.Be prepared with a carefully worked-out plan.
D.You can get great food from so many local places.
E.Throw a party that isn’t on the holiday itself.
F.Buffets are good if you don’t have a large dining table.
G.There is always work you have to do at the last minute.

How to Set Goals
Whether you have small dreams or high expectations, setting goals allows you to plan how you want to move
through life. 6 6
Find out your life goals. Ask yourself some important questions about what you want for your life. What doyou want to achieve today, in a year, and in your lifetime? The answers to this question can be as general as “I want
to be happy” or “I want to help people” . 67
Set specific (具体的) goals. Be specific and realistic about what it is that you want to achieve. Research shows
that setting a specific goal makes you more likely to achieve it. 6 8 For example, “Be healthier” is too big
and vague to be a helpful goal. “I want to eat more vegetables, and I want to run a marathon” is better.
Write out your goals. Be detailed, be clear, and include your steps. 6 9 Keep your list in a place where
you can get informed frequently. This will help keep you motivated.
7 0 You may find yourself set in your ways concerning broad life goals, but take the time to
reevaluate your smaller goals. Are you accomplishing them according to your timeline? Are they still necessary to
keep you on track towards your larger life goals? Allow yourself the flexibility (灵活性) to make some small
changes to your goals.
A.Adjust your goals.
B.Track and measure your progress.
C.Having a plan will help push you ahead.
D.Writing them down tends to make them a little more real.
E.Here are some important ideas that you may find helpful.
F.Consider what you hope to achieve in 10, 15, or 20 years.
G.Remember that you may need to break large goals into smaller goals.

Travelling Economically
● Get a ride to travel destinations with friends or acquaintances (熟人). If people you know are driving to a
location you would like to visit, take advantage of the opportunity to ask them for a lift. Offer to help with gas
money or, if you don’t have any cash, offer a trade or service instead. 71
● Practice safe hitchhiking to get around. 72 Ask each driver several questions before getting in the
vehicle, including what their name is, where they are heading and why they are going there. Follow your gut
instinct (直觉) and avoid getting into a car with anyone who gives you a bad feeling.
● 73 There are many ridesharing websites and apps that allow budget travellers to find a shared lift to
their destination. These sites will also screen and identify the drivers, making the ridesharing experience safe and
simple. Search for available rideshares in your area, which may vary in cost but will cost significantly less than
travelling alone.● Join a free hospitality (好客)-sharing community. 74 You will be able to chat with participating
members living in the area you are travelling to and arrange accommodations before travelling. In addition to being
able to sleep on someone’s couch or in their spare room, you may find someone to show you around the city.
● Camp at inexpensive campsites. Camping can be a budget-friendly activity if you find the right park or site.
75 Visit http://www.uscampgrounds.info/ for a comprehensive list of North American campgrounds, which
indicates sites with a rate of $12 or less per night.
A.Get to new destinations with ridesharing services.
B.Hitchhiking is not an exact science but an art form.
C.Search online for camp sites near your travel destination.
D.Hitchhiking is a free way to travel, but you need to be cautious.
E.One of my big worries when it comes to camping is keeping everyone safe.
F.Be a polite and respectful co-traveller to show your appreciation for their generosity.
G.Find free accommodations in other cities by joining a couchsurfing community online.
