Unit1 How can we become good learners?
Section B Reading How can you become a successful
learner?
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It’s my great honor and pleasure to be
here sharing my lesson with you.
I’d like to begin this representation with six parts .Analysis of the teaching
material, analysis of the students, the teaching methods, the studying methods, the
teaching procedure and the teaching reflections.
Part1
Analysis of the teaching material
The content of my lesson is Go for it Grade 9 Unit1 How can we become good
learners? Section B Reading How can you become a successful learner? The
text mainly talks about some different kinds of habits of becoming a successful
learner. The grammar point is formal subject. By reading the article, students can
effectively comprehend the use of formal subject. The learning strategy of this
lesson is using the dictionary, hoping that at the end of the lesson, students can
form an infiltrated knowledge of the strategy, and in the future study they can
consciously use the dictionary to find the definition that matches the context of
word in the text..
Teaching Aims
According to the new standard curriculum and the syllabus, and after studying the
teaching material, I think the teaching aims are the followings:
①At the end of this lesson, students are able to learn how to learn and find
right ways of learning English around "good learner", comprehend the effect of
this article and to equip students with knowledge of the language and arouse
the awareness of developing good learning habits and study skills to learn
wisely and efficiently.
② At the end of this lesson, students are able to master reading strategy
———using dictionaries to find the definition that matches the context of the
word and use reading skills of skimming and scanning to finish reading by
finishing these tasks.
The Important and Difficult Points.
Based on the requirement of the syllabus:
①The most important point of this lesson is about grasping the main ideas of
reading, understanding different kinds of learning habits.
②The most difficult point of this lesson is about finding out the structure of
the passage and communicating and discussing with partners about the topic
“good leaner”.

The students are junior students of Grade 9.They have a certain ability of English.
Some students are not active and confident in class, some students have trouble
reading, and they are poor in reading strategies, so I’ll have students study in a
relaxed atmosphere.
After learning the previous content of this unit, students should have some
knowledge reserve of learning English. However, in this lesson, students need
to make use of what they have read and combing with their own learning
situation to reflect on whether they have the learning habits and methods that
excellent learners should have. Students learn or can consciously choose
effective learning methods based on their own realities to achieve academic
success.
Part3 Teaching Methods
As we know, a good teaching method requires that the teacher should help
students develop good sense of the English language. For achieving these teaching
aims and after the analysis of the teaching material and teaching aims, I will use the
following methods according to the modern social communication teaching theories.
①Interactive Approach
②Task-based Language Teaching
③Discussion teaching
④Self-dependent learning
⑤cooperative learning.
Part4 Studying Methods
According to the situation of the students and teaching aims. I’ll teach Ss how to
be successful language learners by these ways:
① Let students get the knowledge actively by skimming , scanning and detailed
reading.
②Let the Ss find out the structure of the passage.
Part5 Teaching Procedure
Step1 Lead-in
1. Greet students
2. Warm-up
①Lead in the topic by holding a class meeting about how to become a
successful learner.
②Show students a video about a girl’s habit of learning English.
Purpose of my design:
①Lead in the topic and catch Ss’ attention about the topic.
②It is a connecting link between the preceding and the following.

Step Ⅱ Pre-reading
Task1: Ask students some easy questions
Q1: Who is the best Chinese learner in our class?
Q2: Who is the best math learner in our class?
Q3: Who is the best English learner in our class?
Purpose of my design:
(1) It is close to students’ life, so it can make them interested in the next studying.
(2) Let Ss have the desire to read further
Task2: Ask students to think and discuss what is good learning habits, then
list some good learning habits.
Purpose of my design:
To provide the necessary background knowledge.It is a preparing for Ss’ output.
Task3. Let students look at the picture and title to predict what this passage is
talking about.
Purpose of my design:
To stimulate students’ interest in reading.
Step Ⅲ While-reading
Task 1 Skimming:
①Ask Ss to read quickly and divide the whole passage into 3 parts, then
fond out the true structure of the passage.
②Ask Ss to look through the passage to find out the main ideas by reading the
subtitles.

the main idea of a passage.
Task2 Scanning
①Read the second paragraph and fill in the chart
②Detailed reading: Read the third paragraph and answer the questions
③Detailed reading: Read the fourth paragraph and answer the questions
④Detailed reading: Read the fifth paragraph and answer the questions
⑤Detailed reading: Read the fifth paragraph and answer the question.
⑥Read the passage again and fill in the blanks.
Purpose of my design:
(1) Lead students to know the strategy of scanning, let them learn to scan the useful
information they need
(2) Let students learn about something important about good learning habits.
(3) Enable students to understand the given material better by using different
reading skills.
(4) To make students get language information, and master reading recipes in the
process of reading
Step Ⅳ post-reading
Task1.Lead students to retell the passage by the mind map with the teacher step by
step.
Task2. Ask students to look up the following words of the context in the
dictionary. Then make a sentence for each word.
Purpose of my design:
Cultivate the ability of using dictionary.
Task3 Discuss and share the useful learning habits with class.

①Develop the students’ ability of speaking and show their opinion.
② It’s the Output of their knowledge. I think if the Ss can finish this task well, they
will benefit a lot in their spoken English.
StepⅤ Homework
Homework: Do some review and write a short passage about how can you
become a successful learner?
Purpose of my design:
Reviewing is a good way to represent the key knowledge content of the text,
let the students consolidate the internalization.
Part 6 Teaching Reflections
In my opinion, it is successful. My reasons are as follows:
Firstly, the teaching aims were quite clear. The structure of this lesson is
complete. All the activities were focused on the theme “reading strategies” and were
developed to reach the teaching goal——“Enable the students to master the ways of
skimming and scanning.”
Secondly, in this lesson I designed different activities to arouse the students’ interests
of learning English. Such as: skimming, scanning, detailed reading and discussion.
The students were eager to speak and use English in class.
Well, we will say: no class is perfect. Yes. I think, as a teacher, we should pay
more attention to the students who are not good at English. We should encourage
them more. Give them more chances to speak and use English. I think, with more
encouragement, they are sure to make greater progress in the future.
