“I’ve always enjoyed gardening, but I’ve always been aware from the get-go (从一开始) that there had to be
more to being a professional garden designer than that,” says Karen Martin, who worked in real estate before
changing careers. “I committed to gaining a deeper understanding of the principles of design. To do that I signed up
for a difficult training program that covered everything from the basics of landscape design to more advanced
topics.”
In addition to formal education, gaining practical experience is essential for developing the skills needed to
be a successful garden designer. “I also spent countless hours volunteering at botanical gardens to gain hands-on
experience in the field,” Karen recalls. “It was during these experiences that I learned about plant care and design,
and how they interact to create beautiful outdoor spaces.”
“Those interested in becoming a landscape gardener may try building a collection of photographs, drafts or
computer drawings of garden plans that demonstrate skills and creativity,” Karen suggests. “As I gained
experience, I started building a catalogue ( 目录簿) of my work to show my abilities to potential clients or
employers.”
One of the most rewarding aspects of the job for Karen has been the opportunity to work with clients to turn
their outdoor spaces into something truly unique and beautiful. “I love listening to my clients’ visions and bringing
them to life through thoughtful design and plant selection. Seeing the joy on their faces as they walk through their
newly designed garden is an experience that never gets old,” says Karen.
“Of course, like any profession, there are challenges. The long hours are tiring, and the weather and soil
conditions can all present obstacles (障碍) to creating the perfect outdoor space. But it’s these challenges that make
the job all the more rewarding when you’re able to overcome them and create something truly special.
“All in all, becoming a professional garden designer allows me to combine my love for nature with my
desire to create beauty. Plus, I always end up having a good night’s rest due to the physical parts of the job. I
wouldn’t have it any other way,” Karen concludes.
41.What might Karen think of the training program?
A.It played a key role in her job switch.
B.It was too difficult for her to complete.
C.It focused much on basic designing.
D.It failed to meet her expectations.
42.What does Karen suggest potential landscape gardeners do?
A.Start their own garden.
B.Listen to employers’ ideas.
C.Volunteer at botanical gardens.
D.Build up their bank of work samples.
43.What gives Karen lasting joy in her work?
A.Working long hours under the sun.
B.Watching clients’ satisfied reactions.
C.Overcoming bad weather and soil conditions.
D.Gaining a deeper understanding of gardening.
44.What does Karen say about the challenges of the job?
A.They make her want to quit.
B.They are not worth the effort.
C.They are rare and easy to fix.
D.They make success feel more rewarding.
45.For what reason does Karen appreciate the physical aspect of her job?
A.It benefits her sleep.
B.It keeps her energetic.
C.It strengthens her muscles.
D.It inspires her curiosity about nature.
C
Your favorite foods might not taste the same in the future, and the climate crisis is behind it.
In Spain, the black Iberian pigs, which are very important for making special ham, usually eat acorns (橡子)
and surrounding grass under oak trees. However, because of heatwaves and a five-year drought, these natural-foods
are becoming less. So, the pigs are now fed olives (橄榄), thereby changing the unique flavor of the ham.
Drought also affects how fruits taste. For example, watermelons and cantaloupes (香瓜) taste different when
there’s a drought. Researchers from a Spanish tech center told a Spanish newspaper that sugars and other
compounds build up during droughts, changing the taste of food, sometimes for better, sometimes for worse.
Beyond drought, rising temperatures and sea levels also influence food flavors. Typically, warm days and
cool nights improve the sugar and acid content in fruits, which are essential for the optimal flavor. However,
global-warming makes this hard to achieve. For example, Japanese apples are becoming less acidic, softer, and
drier due to early blooming and high temperatures during growth.
While the food we eat is deeply influenced by the climate crisis, our food choices also cause it. Eating meat
and dairy from cows has a big impact on the climate. Raising livestock (牲畜) produces a lot of greenhouse gases.
Making animal protein also needs more land, energy and water than making plant-based protein.
This may seem like a problem that can’t be solved, but we can break this cycle. The Good Food Institute, a
US group, believes people will choose alternative protein if they are as tasty and affordable as meat.
Meanwhile, more people have started to take action. According to The New York Times, Will Hlmaris, a US
farmer, practices regenerative farming, allowing cows to move around freely, using less chemical use and
disturbing the soil less, which is more environmentally friendly.
46.What changes the flavor of the ham?
A.The unique compounds caused by heatwaves.
B.People’s need to make the flavor special.
C.The harvest of acorns and the surrounding grass.
D.The shortage of food sources and alternative feed.
47.What does the underlined word “optimal” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Strange.
B.Common.
C.Best.
D.Worst.
48.Which are the factors leading to the change of foods’ flavor?
A.Rising temperatures and sea levels.
B.Heatwaves and hurricanes.
C.Regenerative farming and researches.
D.Human’s study and choices.
49.According to the Good Food Institute, people will choose alternative protein if ______.
A.the greenhouse gases disappear
B.they are delicious and cheap enough
C.they are cheaper than meat
D.the environment changes
50.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.Climate crisis changing food taste.
B.Livestock’s role in making protein.
C.Food production affected by climate.
D.Benefits of regenerative farming.
D
“Knowledge is power. Information is liberating. Education is the premise ( 前提) of progress.” These
profound words by former UN Secretary — General Kofi Annan capture the transformative power of knowledge.
When combined with effort, knowledge drives both personal growth and social advancement. Then, what does
meaningful knowledge acquisition look like in today’s world?
Formal education provides the foundation of knowledge. Schools equip us with the basic skills needed for
personal and intellectual growth — reading, writing and critical thinking. More importantly, they teach us how to
learn. For instance, many schools now include hands-on projects, such as recycling programs, where students apply
science to address real-world issues. One such example is Sarah, a student who was inspired by her classroom
learning, initiated a recycling program that successfully collected over 500 kg of plastic in just three months. This
shows how education can bring about real change when knowledge is applied creatively.
However, classroom learning alone isn’t enough. Real-world experience adds depth and perspective to
textbook knowledge. I recall my first coastal cleanup with NOAA researchers — an eye-opening experience that
allowed me to witness firsthand the disastrous effects of plastic pollution on marine life. Similarly, working with
sustainable farmers taught me practical solutions that no textbook could fully capture. These experiences
transformed abstract concepts into real-world understanding and deepened my commitment to environmental work.
As the saying goes, “Experience is the best teacher” — it tests our knowledge and shows us how to use it
effectively.
Perhaps the most underestimated source of knowledge is the people around us. Every individual we meet
carries unique experiences and insights. My grandmother, though not formally educated, taught me profound
lessons about sustainability through her simple practices of reusing and repairing items. Human connections remind
us that knowledge isn’t just found in books — it lives in stories, traditions, and everyday interactions.
In an era of unprecedented (前所未有的) global challenges, the approaches to gaining knowledge aren’t just
helpful — they’re essential. The students learning about plastic recycling today might become the environmental
scientists of tomorrow. The lessons we gain from personal experiences shape how we tackle problems. The wisdom
we share through human connections builds stronger, more innovative societies.
51.Why does the author quote Kofi Annan at the beginning?
A.To present a historical case.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To make a comparison.
D.To criticize outdated views.
52.What does the author suggest about formal education?
A.It’s foundational but fails to meet modern challenges.
B.It’s the most trusted source of knowledge in today’s world.
C.It focuses too much on memorization over creativity.
D.It needs real-world application to make an impact.
53.According to the author, what does working with NOAA researchers indicate?
A.How an experience deepens understanding.
B.What the benefits of government support are.
C.Why marine biology is crucial.
D.Where the advantages of classroom learning lie.
54.Which of the following best illustrates the author’s view on knowledge sharing?
A.A researcher documenting discoveries in private journals.
B.A professor withdrawing research data for no reason.
C.Students repeatedly reciting textbook content.
D.Classmates debating environmental solutions.
55.The passage is mainly about ________.
A.the various ways knowledge is acquired in today’s society
B.the reason why experience outweighs classroom learning
C.the key to solving unprecedented global challenges
D.the significance of knowledge in shaping basic life skills
第III 卷
第四部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5 小题;每小题2 分,满分10 分)
阅读下面短文,并根据题目要求用英语回答问题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。
It’s after midnight and you’ve been studying all day. Empty energy drinks line the table and you sigh,
“Tomorrow, I’m getting ice cream. I deserve to treat myself.”
This year, the so-called “treat yourself culture” has expanded far beyond what was once a reward-based
mindset. Now, “treating yourself” has become more about stress-caused indulgence (放纵). It represents the more
deep-seated issues with the stress we regularly put ourselves under.
The root of the problem lies in our belief that we should be doing more work if it isn’t hard enough.
Especially at a top university, I constantly find myself wanting to do more. I want more credits, a higher-grade
point average, and more responsibilities I’ll later use as conversation topics in interviews. This drive is by no means
a bad thing. We all are trying to eventually land in a place where we can relax and live a more enjoyable life.
However, there are a lot of problems with this logic. Without sounding completely hopeless and pessimistic, it is
possible that the future we imagine in our twenties will not become reality. Therefore, it is important to integrate
things that make us happy with work, school or life induced stress.
Psychology certainly supports this belief. While having good self-control was positively associated with
happiness, being able to enjoy life’s little pleasures without feeling ashamed of doing so is just as important. For
example, even if you have a busy schedule of work, make time to stop by your favorite coffee shop or spend ten
minutes to go on a walk outdoors.
I cannot urge you to give up your late nights of studying, energy drinks and all. I cannot tell you to always
choose to do something that makes you happy over something you have or should do. Frankly, this is just not the
way life works. We have to put up with the hard work and put in the time. Without pain, we’d also lose happiness
and joy. It’s all about balance.
So, instead of looking at everything as a way to handle the stress and something to “treat myself”, let’s try to
make treating ourselves a far more common practice in the busy lives we lead.
56.What causes the so-called “treat yourself culture”?(no more than 5 words)

57.What does “this logic” in Paragraph 3 refer to?(no more than 30 words)

58.What two factors are mentioned as important for happiness?(no more than 15 words)

59.How should we treat ourselves according to the author?(no more than 20 words)

60.Are you a follower of “treat yourself culture”? Why or why not?(In about 20 words)
