The driver cuts you off in traffic. The neighbors don’t pick up after their dog. The insurance
company keeps you
waiting endlessly. Situations such as these get our hearts racing. Anger isn’t a pleasant feeling. Some of
us control the emotion, while others explode in a wild rage. Both habits affect our bodies, our minds, and
our relationships.
Anger may feel uncomfortable, but it’s also normal and healthy. “A lot of people think they have to

get rid of their anger,” says Patrick, a psychologist in Calgary. “But anger is an emotion built into us to
signal that something needs to be solved.” When we take notice of that signal and actually realize the
problem instead of ignoring it, we’re usually much better for it.
Unfortunately, many of us have been conditioned to hide our emotions. Research suggests that this
can have long-term effects on our health. Investigators show that people who suppress
their emotions tend
to have shorter life spans. They’re more likely to die earlier from cancer, for example. When we are
angry, stress hormones (荷尔蒙) are released, which can make us develop a wide range of diseases,
including diabetes and depression. Is it better, then, to scream whenever something makes you mad? That’s
the theory behind the “rage rooms” that have appeared in many American cities, where folks are invited
to express their anger by violently hitting stuff in a “safe” environment. “But the research indicates that
when we display our anger aggressively, it can actually increase the intensity of the anger—and increase
the likelihood of aggressive actions in the future.” says Keelan. It doesn’t take much imagination to
predict how anger can affect your relationships with your wives or husbands, your kids, or your
coworkers. It also hurts your health.
4. What situation may make people angry?
A.Neighbors pick up their dogs’ waste.
B.The insurance company timely offers service.
C.A driver doesn’t wait for his turn.
D.A stranger helps when people get lost.
5. What can we learn from the passage?
A.People should try their best to control their emotion.
B.Anger does good to our health sometimes.
C.Angry people never release stress hormones.
D.Anger is an emotion signaling something has been solved.
6. What does the unlined word “suppress” in Para.3 mean?
A.affect
B.develop C.control
D.display
7. How does the writer express his viewpoint?
A.Subjectively.
B.Pessimistically. C.Indifferently.
D.Objectively.

Have you ever had such an experience? When chatting on WeChat, you sent someone a voice message where
you thought your voice was clear and moving, but when you heard your own recorded voice, you couldn't help

wondering: Is this really my voice? Why is it so ugly?
It’s not your fault. The discomfort we have over hearing our voices in audio recordings is probably due to a
mix of physiology (生理学) and psychology.
For one, the sound from an audio recording is transmitted differently to your brain compared with the sound
made when you speak. When listening to a recording of your voice, the sound travels through the air and into your
ears—what’s referred to as “air conduction”. However, while some of the sound is transmitted through air
conduction, much of the sound is internally conducted directly through your head when you speak. Thus, people
generally learn their voice as deeper and richer. The recorded voice, in comparison, can sound thinner and higher,
which many find annoying.
Another reason why hearing a recording of your voice can be so discomforting is that it really is a new voice
—one that exposes a difference between your self-perception and reality. Dr Silke Paulmann, a psychologist at the
University of Essex, says, “we sound more high-pitched than what we think we should, which makes us uneasy as
it doesn’t meet our internal expectations; our voice plays a massive role in forming our identity and I guess no one
likes to realize that you’re not really who you think you are.”
So if the voice in your head criticizes the voice coming out of a recording device, it’s probably your inner
critic overreacting—and you’re judging yourself a bit too harshly.
8. What does the author think of the fact that people dislike their recorded voices?
A. Instructive.
B. Ridiculous.
C. Reasonable.
D. Confusing.
9. What does the underlined word “transmitted” mean in paragraph 3?
A. declared
B. passed
C. guided
D. admitted
10. What would the author agree about the recorded voice?
A. Scientists can make it meet our expectation.
B. People don’t have to care about its difference.
C. It travels in the air faster than our own sound.
D. It narrows the gap between self-expectation and reality.
11. What problem does the author focus on in the text?
A. How do people chat politely on WeChat?
B. What do the recorded messages contain?
C. How do people change their recorded voice?
D. Why do you hate your own recorded voice?

We’ve had waves of panic around technology for decades, whether it is comic books or video games. Now
it happens to be social media. And the fact of the matter is that parents and teachers, who are trying to raise their
kids in the face of these panics, are being poorly served by the government when it comes to getting meaningful
advice.
It’s not that social media is good or bad for people. It’s that the science of social media and mental health is

broken. We need to do research, but we shouldn’t be approaching it from the perspective that the world is ending.
We need to be curious and open to the possibility of its effects, positive and negative.
The danger for policymakers or parents is that if you pretend that social media is a problem, without
having evidence, and you take steps to regulate it, the intervention could end up being really bad for young
people. You might be taking away a lifeline for vulnerable (脆弱的) kids or free them of their human right to play,
which is morally wrong at the best of times, let alone during a pandemic.
So that’s why I’m not going to tell you that I know social media is bad. It’s perfectly reasonable for parents
and teachers to be concerned about social media, but it’s unavoidable and young people are going to encounter it
sooner or later. So what would you rather do: keep them in the dark and leave them ill-equipped to deal with it or
let them learn about social media with your help and support? It’s a little like learning to ride a bike. Bikes can be
huge fun to ride, but you can also hurt yourself on them, which is why you don’t just give your kid a bike and a
helmet and wish them good luck. You help them learn to ride. Similarly, you’re not asking your 14-year-old
daughter to choose between telling you someone scary is messaging her or losing her phone. You need to treat it
like anything else that can hurt you, but can also connect you.
12. What does this wave of panic refer to now according to the passage ?
A. Technology B. Comic books
C. Video games D. Social media
13. What should we do to help our children?
A. Give them some instructions
B. Ask the experts for help
C. Go to the special treatment center
D. Free them of their human right to play
14. What is the author’s attitude towards the social media?
A. Doubtful B. Supportive
C. Neutral D. Indifferent
15. Which of the following statements does the author agree with ?
A. Parents should let children learn about social media on their own.
B. The world is ending as a result of the negative effects of social meaia.
C. Parents should be cautious when regulating children’s using social media.
D. Parents are advised not to give kids helmets when they learn to ride a bike.

Your preschooler is painting with fingers. Trying to be encouraging, you ask her, “What are you making
with this mix of colors?” and she shrugs (耸肩). Until you mentioned it, she hadn’t given it any thought.

They love the way it feels when they pour paint on paper, how it looks when they wildly drop glitter, and even the
soft sound a brush makes as it crosses the page.
Most preschoolers aren’t self-conscious about what they’re doing or focused on creating a finished product.

But letting go—and allowing kids to enjoy the process of creation—can harvest big rewards. Children
will be better off in the long run if they’re allowed just to be in the moment and express themselves.
Fostering (培养) creativity won’t just increase your child’s chances of becoming the next Picasso.
1 8
As kids use a paintbrush, their fine motor skills improve. By counting pieces and colors, they learn the basics of
math. When children experiment with materials, they dive in science. Most important perhaps, when kids feel good
while they are creating, art helps boost self-confidence.
1 9
Set up an art space where your kid can be free to experiment. Throw a drop cloth or a newspaper
on top of your kitchen table or in the garage. If weather permits, let kids paint outside. Avoid giving directions.
Don’t tell your kid what to make or how to make it. Instead of saying, “Paint a rainbow,” encourage her to
“experiment with mixing colors using different types of brushes and paper.” When a child finishes a piece, don’t
suggest additions or changes. 20
A. So just prepare for a mess.
B. Preschoolers like to be alone.
C. Little kids are masters of the moment.
D. That can be hard for parents to accept.
E. Remember to warn them against their care less mistakes.
F. You’re also helping him develop mentally, socially, and emotionally.
G. Let your child feel her creation is enough-even if it’s just a dot on the page.

(2021·山东烟台适应性考试)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Many years ago, I had a friend named Jonathan who lived only a few houses down the street. He was a cool
kid and a real friend and in retrospect(回想) I can see he had all the usual qualities and hang-ups of a typical boy.
He was fun to be with because of his innocent enthusiasm, and he knew all the best places to hang out in the
neighborhood.
The best part about Jonathan, though, was his dog. This is not to say that my friend was any less memorable
than his pet, but that dog had a very special quality. A friendly Labrador that never met anyone he didn’t like, or
immediately want to lick, Bowzer was born without any vocal chords (声带). He simply couldn’t bark though he

behaved just like any other dog.
Even though he couldn’t make any sounds, Bowzer surely made his presence known anyway. We couldn’t
play a pickup baseball game in the neighborhood park without an extra infielder, outfielder, base runner, or bellboy
running around on four paws. It looked like his life depended on bumping into every single player on the field,
regardless of which team that player played on. For all of us, it became an accepted part of our playtime that
Bowzer would somehow be involved in whatever activity we decided on.
Then, one day, something terrible happened to Jonathan. His parents were called away to the hospital because
his grandmother was ill, and so Jonathan was left at home by himself. Two men had chosen that house for an
unannounced visit.
Jonathan was in his bedroom and heard the noise from the break-in, and because of panic, he didn’t scream for
help. Bowzer was in the bedroom, and heard the noise as well, but because of his birth defect(缺陷), he couldn’t
make a sound. As Jonathan read a book, the robbers made their way through the entire house and probably figured
that no one was home.
