After spending her own time in the hospital, Katy has found a way to bring joy to patients.
Over 2 years ago, Katy was recovering from spinal surgery (脊柱手术). Though it did aid in adjusting the
shape of her spine, she still spent much of her time in recovery. In a recent blog, her mother claims music has
provided the most healing for her condition. Music is better than any drug we could ever give her. For the last few
years she has tried to figure out the best way to use her voice.
She then found out Musicians On Call has regular programs near her, and immediately applied so she could
deliver the healing power of music just as it healed her. After her first program, her spirit was getting better and
better. “She gave a few lessons to nurses in the hallway and made a doctor into a new fan.” When thinking about
why this moment brought so much joy, her mother had this to say: We have been there. We know the days that turn
into weeks and seem to go on forever. Katy knows how music can heal the uncertainty in those days and the
loneliness of us. I think Katy has found a place to use her voice to bring comfort, to bring joy, to make even the
tiniest of patients dance.
Special thanks to Katy and her mother for sharing their story on their blog! If you’re interested in helping
deliver the healing power of music, we are currently seeking Volunteer Guides and Musicians in Las Vegas, New
Orleans, Memphis, and Denver. You can start your Volunteer journey by filling out our application today!

If you could take a pill to “cure” your loneliness, would you take it? The “loneliness epidemic (流行病)” has
been widely reported and commented upon across the world in recent years, affecting young and old. There have
even been numerous urgent calls by governments to address it. However, some researchers question whether we
really have the credible data to back up such claims. Should we struggle to eradicate it, as we would a virus or a
disease?
Psychologist James Hillman had concerns about viewing loneliness as a pathology (病理学). He noted that
solutions like socializing in recovery groups suggest we should get rid of loneliness. But Hillman argued that if
loneliness is a natural part of us, it will naturally come and go throughout our lives, regardless of our efforts to
avoid it.
I have spent much of my career researching loneliness, conducting hundreds of interviews and observing its
many versions across all ages. My findings suggest that loneliness is not a single feeling but a label for a range of
human experiences and unmet needs related to disconnection, which may be inevitable at times. In my book All the
Lonely People: Conversations on Loneliness, I present various examples of loneliness, drawn from numerous
projects and interviews, each offering a glimpse into different aspects of this condition.
Stories help us identify what loneliness looks like and how it is lived. They also show that loneliness is part
of most people’ s life journeys. Accepting this reality may be more sensible than pathologizing it, which can create
shame and force people to hide their loneliness.
This is not to ignore loneliness, which is challenging and difficult. But stories allow us to share ourloneliness, unburden ourselves, and connect with others. The suffering in loneliness often originates from being
alone with it. Ultimately, the answer to loneliness may lie in learning to live alongside it, rather than denying its
existence or trying to root it out.
28.What does the underlined word “eradicate” most probably mean?
A.Remove. B.Change. C.Highlight. D.Identify.
29.What is the author’s research approach to studying loneliness?
A.Observing physical responses in trials. B.Collecting a variety or typical cases
C.Reviewing published research papers. D.Taking a questionnaire survey analysis.
30.What is the main purpose of the author sharing “stories”?
A.To inform how loneliness varies with age. B.To emphasize the importance of storytelling.
C.To show complexities of human loneliness. D.To express his sympathy for the suffering.
31.What is the author’s suggestion for the issue of loneliness?
A.Overcome it by staying busy. B.Engage with social activities.
C.Coexist peacefully with it. D.Turn to experts for guidance.

In Morten Tyldum’s movie Passengers, characters Jim Preston and Aurora Lane are on a 120-year interstellar
journey with 5,000 other people. Their destination: HomesteadⅡ, a new world to start their lives anew. To survive
the travel, passengers entered hibernation (冬眠), each one frozen in their own pod. However, something goes
wrong and Jim and Aurora wake up 90 years too early. But what if we told you that hibernation for space travel is
more likely to happen than the romantic story between Jim and Aurora?
Hibernation is a state in which living organisms slow down their metabolic (新陈代谢的) processes while
maintaining essential functions. Once inside these pods, astronauts will get drugs to adjust metabolism, reduce core
temperature, and cause inactivity. Once back on Earth, they will wake up and gradually readopt their normal
functional metabolism.
For going to Mars, astronauts would require about 30 kg of food, water, air, and other supplies per day. Thus,
hibernation can significantly cut down on their essential needs. Additionally, hibernating astronauts wouldn’t get
bored, stressed, or lonely, and less time and space would be needed to help keep them fit or entertained.
But this is merely the theory. Space agencies are investigating whether reducing body temperature and later
inducing (导致) metabolism is a more practical option, while, most research projects are currently focusing on
animals. The question is: how can we evoke hibernation in species that are not normally doing that? And this is
why the research on rats, not naturally hibernating animals, is interesting. Research on bears is also important sincetheir body size is more relatable to ours.
The concept is not being considered for the forthcoming Mars mission, but for longer missions to farther
destinations such as the outer planets, it could be a very useful technology. Hibernation for humans is an ethically
controversial concept, and critics may consider it as a mad scientist’s dream. However, without such dreamers,
humanity would still be in the Middle Ages.
32.Why does the author mention the movie Passengers?
A.To advertise a popular sci-fi space movie.
B.To introduce a new approach to long spaceflights.
C.To explore the possibility of settling another planet.
D.To reveal the potential dangers of long space travels.
33.What happens to hibernating astronauts?
A.Their functional metabolism is disturbed.
B.They need more time and space for entertainment.
C.They lose the balance between basic needs and supplies.
D.Their physical and mental needs are reduced to a minimum.
34.What does the underlined word “evoke” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Initiate. B.Justify. C.Define. D.Prioritize.
35.What does the author think of hibernation for humans?
A.It may be a risky strategy. B.It is a dream hard to realize.
C.It can advance social progress. D.It challenges traditional moral values.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
If you have ever interacted with a playful puppy, a darling kitten, or any other adorable creature, chances are
that you’ve experienced an overwhelming urge to pet, squeeze, or even pinch them. 36 It is a response that
is likely linked to our innate drive to nurture and protect our young.
37 A questionnaire to measure the levels of cute aggression experienced was given to the participants
of the study. Researchers found that people tend to feel a stronger “cute aggression” response towards baby animals
and pictures of digitally enhanced human babies with enlarged features. They also found that seeing cute things
triggers the brain’s emotion and reward systems. Someone may feel so overwhelmed with emotions that they have
become unmanageable. The brain’s strategy to regulate this imbalance is to express an “opposite” emotion to avoid
excessive emotional exertion. 38 This phenomenon is called a dimorphous expression (二态表达) ofemotion.
A second study also confirmed that cute aggression is a way of regulating emotions. When people are
overwhelmed by a strong emotion, they develop distorted negative behavior called “duplicity”, in which what they
do does not correspond to what they think. But cute aggression doesn’t equal abusive violence. 39
Now that you know why you feel the urge to squeeze unbearably cute and fluffy things, there’s no need to
worry about these aggressive tendencies. 40 If you feel the urge to pinch, bite, or even “grind your teeth”
when you see cute animals, don’t worry — this is not “sadistic tendencies”, but the brain is trying to control itself.
A.The brain uses aggression to balance the overwhelming positive emotions of the two systems.
B.A study in 2018 sought to comprehend the brain activity triggering cute aggression.
C.The stronger the feelings of cute aggression, the stronger the urge to flee.
D.They’re a normal part of our response to adorable creatures.
E.On the contrary, cute aggression can foster collaboration between people.
F.The former is a positive emotion that does not lead to real violent actions.
G.This instinctive impulse is commonly referred to as cute aggression.

第二节 (满分 25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My day started just like all the other days for the past 15 years where I get up, make some coffee, shower, get
dressed, and leave for the train station at precisely 7:35 A.M. to arrive at work by 8:30.While on the train, I
would always choose a seat away from the crowd so I could read the newspaper in peace and quiet.
At work, I am always burdened with questions from co-workers, suppliers, telephone calls, and then those
dreaded meetings, so the last thing I need is some stranger to sit beside me and start small talk.
I don’t know why, but for some reason, when I got on the train today, it was unusually full. With hesitation, I
sat down in the only seat available beside a middle-aged man who had his head down and seemed to be lost in his
thoughts. I was glad that he didn’t notice when I sat next to him as he just continued to look down towards the
floor.
Shortly after the train left for my 30-minute ride downtown, I found myself wondering what this man was
thinking about. What could be so important that he didn’t even see me sitting next to him? I tried to forget about itand started to read my paper. However, for some strange reason, this “inner voice” kept prompting me to talk to this
man. I tried to ignore the “voice” as there was no way I was starting a conversation with a complete stranger.
As you probably guessed, I eventually broke down and came up with an excuse to ask him a question. When
he raised his head and turned his eyes toward me, I could see that he must have been really upset as he had red eyes
and still had some tears rolling down the side of his face, despite his feeble attempt to wipe them away. I can’t
describe the sadness I felt seeing someone in so much pain.
We talked for about 20 minutes, and in the end, he seemed to be doing better. As we were leaving the train,
he thanked me heartily for being an “angel” by taking the time to talk. I never did find out what was making his
heart so heavy with pain, but I was glad I listened to the “voice” that day.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
