Ross McLaren, a 31-year-old chemistry teacher from Kilwinning, Ayrshire, began diving in 2016. He wasamazed by the sea life, but the hobby can sometimes be depressing due to the quantity of rubbish. While diving in
Scotland’s sea lochs (海湾), Ross noticed a sharp rise in litter since the COVID-19 lockdown, despite his belief that
Scotland is one of the best places in the world for diving.
“I accidentally fell in love with diving, and it’s good to show people what is happening underwater,” Ross
said. “Some of the things I’ve seen underwater are decades old. Sea creatures are making their homes in litter.
People won’t care if they can’t see it.”
On one occasion, he spotted what he thought was a magnificent jellyfish (牡蛎), only to realize it was a
plastic bag. “You can understand why a whale thinks a plastic bag is a jellyfish. It’s really disheartening.” Ross
added, “I think it has got worse since lockdown. There’s a general increase in the amount of litter in the water.
People don’t realize what an impact it is having. I tend to do a lot of diving around the sea lochs.”
One upsetting image showed a lobster (龙虾) with plastic tied around its claws (钳子), suggesting it had
been caught and thrown back into the water. According to Ross, it’s necessary to weigh up the benefits of removing
litter if it has a sea-creature living in it. He said, “The ocean life does use litter as habitat. On this occasion, I
thought it was best to leave it, as it appeared that the lobster had made it its home. During some of my underwater
explorations, I have seen things like cans, which have gathered bits and pieces. That is where it becomes a moral
issue.”
24.What has been Ross’s main concern while diving?
A.The cold water temperature. B.The poor visibility underwater.
C.The dangerous sea life in the area. D.The increasing amount of underwater litter.
25.What does Ross mean by saying “People won’t care if they can’t see it”?
A.People are unaware of the beauty of the ocean.
B.People believe ocean pollution will resolve itself over time.
C.People tend to ignore problems they don’t personally experience.
D.People believe that ocean pollution matters only when it’s visible.
26.Why does the author mention a plastic bag being mistaken for a jellyfish?
A.To illustrate how whales interact with jellyfish.
B.To emphasize the beauty of jellyfish in the ocean.
C.To stress the harm caused by plastic in the ocean.
D.To show how sea animals confuse litter with food.
27.Why does Ross consider the issue of ocean litter a moral one?
A.Because sea creatures depend on litter for survival.B.Because humans have a responsibility to clean up the oceans.
C.Because removing litter could harm creatures using it as habitat.
D.Because litter is causing permanent damage to the ocean ecosystem.
C
It is not just the environment and the economy that are threatened by a warmer climate, but also culture and
traditions around the world. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden and the University of Queensland in
Australia have mapped what little is known about how climate change is eroding local knowledge and cultural
heritage.
“We risk losing the memory of Indigenous ( 本 土 的 ) people’s ways of life without this type of
documentation,” says Guy Jackson, a postdoctoral fellow at Lund University.
He is one of the authors of a literature study that includes 100 scientific articles, most of which focus on
North America or the Northern Arctic Circle. One of the conclusions of previous studies is that cultural heritage is
primarily seen as something of material value, such as an archaeological site or historic building. However,
focusing on the loss of material cultural heritage means that important traditions and knowledge systems are
overlooked. “There are many non-material losses that are valuable for both individual identity and group identity,”
says Guy Jackson.
Actually there is a clear connection between loss of Indigenous cultural heritage and changes in the natural
environment. For example, songs and working methods change when groups lose traditions linked to a physical
location. One scientific article points out that for the Inuit in Canada, identity is closely linked to the environment:
“Inuit people are people of the sea ice. If there is no more sea ice, how can they be people of the sea ice?”
According to Guy Jackson, this could lead to several consequences. Loss of traditions and cultural heritage
can make it more difficult to deal with climate change, and weaken social cohesion (凝聚力), as people lose touch
with traditional ways of life.
The researchers hope that the literature study can lead to more targeted research. In particular, they want to
see a larger focus on how to handle, minimize and reduce future losses. “Science should contribute by developing
practical solutions that help with adaptation to the losses that have already happened”, Guy Jackson concludes.
28.Which word can replace the underlined word “eroding” in Paragraph 1?
A.Weakening. B.Classifying. C.Preserving. D.Stabilizing.
29.What does Guy Jackson think of the previous studies?
A.Well-grounded.B.Two-dimensional. C.Non-standard. D.One-sided.
30.Which example relates to cultural heritage loss most due to environmental changes?A.The downfall of local incomes.
B.The disunity of the local population.
C.The decline in traditional farming methods.
D.The distancing of interpersonal relationships.
31.What do researchers hope the future research will focus on?
A.Minimizing the loss of material heritage.
B.Limiting potential cultural heritage damages.
C.Developing strategies for protecting ecosystems.
D.Broadening the geographical focus of the research.

Ask students to describe their brain with a metaphor(比喻) and they’re likely to suggest a computer,
command center, or maybe a lightning-fast communications network. But they’d be better off thinking of the brain
as a muscle that gets stronger with use. Researchers now understand that IQ isn’t fixed at birth. Just as we get more
physically fit from exercising, we can build brainpower through the act of learning.
Children who adopt what psychologist Carol Dweck calls a growth mindset understand that intelligence isn’t
fixed but can be developed through effort. In her book Mindset, Dweck explains why students who have a growth
mindset are more willing to tackle challenges, learn from failure, and see criticism as useful feedback rather than a
reason to give up. This is the kind of thinking that keeps students motivated, even when learning is hard work.
The good news is that even mindset isn’t fixed. A growth mindset can be learned and improved by messages
that praise persistence and set high expectations. For example, help students understand that challenging
assignments will stretch their “thinking muscles.” At the same time, provide them with necessary support so they
don’t get discouraged.
It is widely believed that all brains are not equal because context and ability influence learning. The brain
connects new information to old and can be changed by experience.
Effective teaching strategies help students move toward higher-order thinking, or what neurologists call
executive(执行) function. As neurologist turned teacher Judy Willis, MD explains, “When you provide students
with opportunities to apply learning, especially through real, personally meaningful activities with formative
assessments and corrective feedback throughout a unit, facts move from rote(死记硬背) memory to become
integrated into related memory bank, instead of being cut away from disuse.”
Of course, all this brain activity is happening in a unique way for each student. By addressing learners’
individual needs, educators can help students strengthen the connections that will lead to deeper understanding.32.Why does the author compare the brain to a muscle?
A.Both work as a complex network. B.Both transport information quickly.
C.Both are important organs of the body. D.Both become stronger through practice.
33.Which of the following students may have the growth mindset?
A.Student A abandoned his project half-way.
B.Student B changed his major after a failure.
C.Student C adjusted his way of learning new words.
D.Student D refused to accept his teacher’s criticism.
34.What can we infer about growth mindset from Paragraph 3?
A.It is born-with. B.It is easy to get.
C.It can be predicted. D.It can be strengthened.
35.Who are the probable target readers of this text?
A.Educators. B.Parents. C.Students. D.Officials.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Colorful Extracurricular Life for Students
Students’ lives are not just confined to the classroom and textbooks. The extracurricular time is equally
important and can be filled with a variety of interesting and meaningful activities.
One popular choice is joining different clubs at school. For example, the drama club offers students a chance
to step into the shoes of different characters. 36 This helps improve their communication skills as well as
boosts their confidence when performing on stage in front of an audience.
37 Whether it’s playing basketball on the school court or running in the track and field team, students
can not only keep fit but also learn the spirit of teamwork and perseverance. When they work together with
teammates to win a game or break their own personal records, a sense of achievement washes over them.
Moreover, many students are fond of reading in their free time. They can explore different worlds through
books, from fantasy fields full of magic to diverse landscapes that stimulate their imaginations. 38
Some students choose to learn musical instruments like the guitar or piano. The process of practicing and
gradually being able to play beautiful melodies is both challenging and rewarding. 39 It has the power to
connect them with others on a deeper level.
In conclusion, a rich extracurricular life provides students with opportunities to develop themselves in
multiple aspects, such as exploring new hobbies, learning new skills, and chasing after those little passions thatmake their heart flutter. 40 So, they’re supposed to take advantage of their extracurricular time and embrace
all the wonderful possibilities it brings.
A.Reading is very popular among students.
B.Sports activities also play a significant role.
C.Students can act out stories from classic plays.
D.It helps them grow into well-rounded individuals.
E.Music allows them to express their emotions in a unique way.
F.They can expand their knowledge and have broad horizons as well.
G.It makes your middle school years a time filled with beautiful experiences.

Rushing into the supermarket that fall afternoon, I did not know I would get to be a part of something
beautiful. In all honesty, I can’t even remember why I was in this grocery store. I never shopped here. It was out of
my way and out of the circle that I lived my life within. But it was meant for me to be there at this particular time.
After selecting my items, I proceeded to the checkout line. I noticed a young woman in the line in front of
me. Her clothes were worn, and she looked so tired. She had a toddler (学步的儿童) who could not have been
more than three and a newborn baby who was just a few weeks old. The toddler was running and jumping around
just like toddlers do. The baby was crying. My heart went out to her. I had been in her shoes with my own two sons.
She managed to get her groceries on the moving belt despite all the chaos of her kids, and the clerk started
checking out her items. As I stood behind her, I noticed that she was losing patience with her kids but didn’t know
what to do. She was trying to balance both tasks without causing a huge disturbance. I began to whisper a prayer of
peace and strength over this woman. The line behind me continued to snake its way into another passage. The
pressure was growing.
As I watched her, I remembered the time when I had been in a grocery store with a toddler who was running
around and a screaming baby. I remembered the mean, old man behind me and the inappropriate comment he made
on me as I checked out. That memory took me away from the checkout line for a moment. When I came back to the
present, I realized that the young woman was looking at a few items and trying to decide what she needed to put
back.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
