Can I share a language assistant with other schools? Yes—in fact, many successful placements are based on this arrangement. Sharing an assistant with other schools can bring the benefits of having a native speaker among your staff while reducing the cost.
Each language assistant can usually be shared between a maximum of three primary schools, secondary schools or further education colleges. The programme-wide restriction is in place to enable language assistants to have as much impact as possible in the institutions they work in. The fewer schools a language assistant works in, the more time he/she has to support the school.
Please note: When applying for the programme, enter the number or names of schools with which you wish to share on the application form.
In some circumstances, there may be more flexible sharing arrangements available (see below). Please contact the team for more information.
French language assistants for primary schools in England, Wales and Northern Ireland
Sharing arrangements will be permitted for up to six primary schools in England, Northern Ireland and Wales. Language assistants will not always have access to transport, so the schools will need to be within reasonable traveling distance. The British Council will review and approve sharing proposals for more than three schools. The language assistants may not be trained but will have an interest in primary teaching.
Please note: As the application form is for the entire Language Assistants programme, please specify in the “Further Information” text box at the end of the form if your request is for “primary-specific French language assistant” so that we can best identify these requests with our partner agency in France.

Most people in their eighties would consider themselves lucky not to have health problems, but this is not the case with Toshisuke Kanazawa. The 87-year-old Japanese bodybuilder is not only in perfect physical condition, but he also looks better than a lot of men a quarter his age.
Kanazawa is living proof that you’re never too old to hit the gym and achieve the body you’ve always dreamed of. A champion bodybuilder in his youth, Kanazawa stopped exercising completely after he retired at 34, drinking, smoking and eating whatever he liked. It wasn’t until he turned 50 that he got his motivation (动力) to regain the perfect body of his younger years.
Kanazawa’s wife felt sick frequently, and the former bodybuilder remembered that she had never been happier than when he won the national championship. So to please her, he decided to return to the gym and completely change his diet.
His workout schedule had to be adjusted to his age as well. In his youth, he would spend up to six hours training in the gym every day, and his body would recover within two days after a particularly intensive workout, but that was not the case anymore. He cut the daily gym time to three hours and gave his body one week to recover after exercising every muscle group.
Kanazawa’s efforts paid off. In 2016, Kanazawa defeated many opponents and was placed sixth in the world in a contest for bodybuilders over 65, and won the admiration of the crowd.
Sport keeps this elderly man healthy, as he claims not to have suffered so much as a cold since he started bodybuilding again at the age of 50.
“I want to be a super old man in the bodybuilder community,” Kanazawa said. “If I have a goal, I can continue moving forward. I have to work much harder.”
4. What can we learn about Kanazawa from the second paragraph?

In 1945, a Chinese immigrantnamed Buwei Yang Chao introduced a new cooking technique called “stir-fry” to America.
Buwei Yang was born in Jiangsu Province in eastern China in 1889. At a young age, she was sent to Tokyo to study to become a medical doctor. After graduating, she returned to China where she met the noted linguist Yuenren Chao, and the two got married in 1921. In 1938, she moved to the US with her husband who got a job at Harvard. Bored and with limited English, she turned to cooking, eventually publishing a cookbook How to Cook and Eat in Chinese.
Buwei’s book was unique; it refused to Westernize Chinese cooking, unlike previous cookbooks. She insisted on authenticity (真实性), even down to the specific types of crabs used in dishes. This refusal to compromise her culinary (烹饪的) roots marked a significant shift in how Chinese cuisine was presented in America.
Despite her lasting impact on American food culture, Buwei remains largely forgotten. Her contribution, however, was crucial. She not only introduced new cooking techniques but also gave English speakers a new culinary term, “stir-fry”.
Buwei confidently displayed her Chinese heritage, firmly resisting full assimilation (同化) into American culture. Her pride and refusal to compromise her roots distinctly distinguished her from other immigrant chefs of her era, exhibiting a strong sense of identity and cultural pride.
Sadly, Buwei’s contribution has been overshadowed by history. When she died in 1981, The New York Times did not even publish an obituary (讣告). Her name has since fallen through the cracks of pop culture.
Buwei’s story raises questions about the recognition of culinary pioneers, especially immigrants who maintain their cultural differences. How many other chefs like Buwei await rediscovery? Her story reminds us of the importance of celebrating cultural diversity in the culinary world and beyond.

9. Why was Buwei’s cookbook unique?
A. It was written by a doctor-turned-chef.
B. It only used specific types of crabs in dishes.
C. It was the first Chinese cookbook in America.
D. It refused to adapt Chinese cooking to Western tastes.
10. What can we infer about Buwei from paragraphs 4-6?
A. No one knew her name in her day.
B. The American media thought highly of her.
C. She was proud of Chinese food culture.
D. She invented several cooking techniques.
11. What does Buwei’s story tell us?
A. Cultural diversity can be overshadowed by history.
B. Cultural diversity is only important to immigrants.
C. Cultural diversity is not important in the culinary world.
D. Cultural diversity should be celebrated in all aspects of life.

Dogs can tell the difference between different languages, researchers in Hungary have found.
For their study, the researchers played recordings of the story “The Little Prince” in both Spanish and Hungarian to a group of 18 dogs. Then they examined how the animals’ brains reacted.
The study was led by Laura V. Cuaya at Eötvös Loránd University in Budapest. She moved to Hungary from Mexico a few years ago and brought her dog Kun-kun with her. “I wondered whether Kun-kun noticed that people in Budapest spoke a different language, Hungarian,” she said. The study found for the first time that a non-human brain can “distinguish between languages”.
During the experiment, Kun-kun and other dogs were trained to lie down in a brain scanner (扫描仪) for several minutes. Every dog in the study had heard only one of two languages spoken by their owners—either Hungarian or Spanish. Then researchers compared how their brains reacted to a highly familiar language and to a completely unfamiliar one. Cuaya said that dogs could understand the differences in how the two languages are spoken. Spanish, she said, is more melodic (旋律优美的), while Hungarian is more monotone (单调的). “We believe that dogs detect that,” she said.
The dogs listened to parts of “The Little Prince” in Spanish and Hungarian. Researchers also played scrambled versions of the story to test if they could hear the difference between speech and non-speech. To “scramble” a recording means to change it so that listeners are not able to understand it.
When comparing brain reactions, researchers found clear activity in the dogs’ primary auditory—or hearing—area of the brain. That suggested that they can distinguish between speech and non-speech. The dogs’ secondary auditory area is for understanding complex sounds. This part of the dogs’ brains produced different activity patterns when they heard a familiar language compared to an unfamiliar language. The researchers also found that the older the dogs were, the better they were able to distinguish between the two languages.
12. What do we know about the dogs in the study?
A. They were all brought from Mexico.
B. They had heard only one kind of language.
C. They were trained to speak a foreign language.
D. They preferred languages that sound pleasant.
13. What does the underlined word “detect” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Discover.
B. Organize.
C. Disturb.
D. Change.
14. How did the researchers know dogs could tell the differences between languages?
A. Dogs liked to play in different activity patterns.
B. Dogs liked the scrambled versions of the story.
C. Dogs reacted happily to the story told in a familiar language.
D. Dogs reacted differently to the story told in different languages.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Dogs Can Speak Two Different Languages
B. Dogs Can Distinguish Between Languages
C. The Difference Between Spanish and Hungarian
D. The Difference Between a Dog Brain and a Human Brain
