If students will arrive at UT Dallas (the University of Texas at Dallas) after the first day of classes, the ISSO
(International Students and Scholars Office) strongly suggests they put off their admission. It’s our experience that
late-arriving students have a stressful time settling in and meeting all the pre-registration requirements, such as TB
Test (肺结核检查), orientations (入学培训), housing and so on. The inability to meet all these requirements may
harm a student’s F-1 or J-1 visa status.
Departmental Late Arrival Letter
UT Dallas academic departments have the freedom and authority to write a late arrival letter on a student’s
behalf. Departments may only offer this letter if they are willing to make a statement to CBP (Customs and Border
Protection), showing that they will ensure that the late-arriving student will be able to meet all university and
immigration requirements despite the late arrival.
Approval or denial of late arrival will be based on the individual worthiness of the request. The letter should
be addressed to CBP and sent directly to the student from the academic department.
In general, scanned and printed images will be accepted by CBP. The letter should state:
◎ How late the department is willing to let the student start the semester. This must be a specific date.
◎ That the student will be able to enroll full-time in the academic program and make normal academic
progress despite the late arrival.
The letter will not guarantee entry into the US; it simply reduces the possibility that late-arriving students will
be turned away at the US Port of Entry.

I had not hugged a friend or a family member for more than two years until recently when my sister-in-lawflew in for a brief visit. For everyone’s safety, we met outside. Despite the wintry weather, her hug warmed me
from the inside out. It’s strange, but only now do I truly realize how much I’ve missed embracing loved ones-- the
warmth that remains long after our arms have loosened.
Growing up through war in my hometown of Sarajevo, Bosnia, every moment was full of danger. On one
peaceful morning. I had begged my mom to let me go outside after spending weeks wilting (蔫) indoors. She
finally agreed. I was outside for only 10 minutes when I was caught in an explosion. I ran to my neighbor’s house
for safety and threw my arms around her neck just as my legs collapsed underneath me. She hugged me with both
arms and dragged me into her house. I was still in her arms when the ambulance arrived.
Thankfully. I made a full physical recovery, but the emotional scars never left me. Years later there was
another explosion near my house. I was safely inside, but my father had left to buy a loaf of bread. He had only just
missed the blast. When he came back inside, I gave him the biggest hug imaginable. I was caked in tears as I held
him tight.
That same night my parents managed to arrange my escape from our war-torn city. They desperately wanted at
least some of my childhood to be normal. I was 16 and came to America on my own. A generous host family took
me in and I began learning English and going to school. They had a large dog called Oscar. Over the next several
months, I secretly struggled with feeling homesick and worried about my family back home. Despite managing
quite well at school, I couldn’t express my feelings. The only way I shared how I felt was by giving Oscar a big
hug.
It is yet another sad aspect of our pandemic lives that hugging a stranger is the last thing on our minds. For
many of us, even hugging a relative or a friend comes with stress and anxiety over risks and precautions (防范).
Perhaps we have undervalued the impact of a simple hug. As I look back on my past, I count myself truly lucky to
have been held, shielded and encouraged at some of the most key moments of my life by the almost super power of
a hug. I pray that in the not-so-distant future we can safely hold one another again - a friend, relative, or even a
stranger.

Canaries, a kind of small yellow songbirds, are more sensitive to carbon monoxide (CO) than people are. Thus
they were routinely taken into mines as men went about their work of mining for coal. CO could quickly poison
many miners before they even knew what was happening. If a canary stopped singing, this was an indicator of
rising CO levels. Now ecologists think they’ve found a “canary” that could predict possible disaster for tropical (热
带的) ecosystems—the cricket (a small brown jumping insect).
Crickets are tiny, present in large numbers and, most importantly, noisy. The chirps (唧唧叫声) of individual
species are identifiably different. Researchers had previously wondered if ecosystems might be monitored by
listening to how the sounds of their crickets change over time.
Amandine Gasc and her colleagues studied cricket populations on Grande Terre Island in New Caledonia,
where multiple ecosystems often exist very near to each other. They collected crickets at 12 sampling sites. Four
were healthy forest sites, four were shrubland (灌木地) areas, which is often created when people cut down forests,
and four were shrubland areas that were turning into forests again. They listened for insects in square zones and ran
ten 30-minute collection sessions at each site.
Dr. Gasc described how each ecosystem had, in effect, a distinct “cricket fingerprint”. Species richness variesconsiderably among the different environments. Of the 20 cricket species found in the healthy forest, 12 were
unique to that habitat alone, 2 of the 15 species found in transitioning forests were unique to this habitat and 3 of
the 7 shrubland species were unique to shrubland.
Just by looking at the crickets found in a given location, the team found that it was possible to determine
whether they were looking at shrubland, forest or shrubland that was changing into the forest. There was no need to
examine the other surrounding plants or animals.
What’s more, Dr. Gasc’s team found each habitat contained cricket species that generated their identifiable
chirps. This suggests that setting up audio recorders in forests that pick up cricket calls will be an easy, cheap and
accurate way to detect the early stages of change in tropical ecosystems.

But what about old industrial buildings? Can they start anew?
China seems to find a good solution for them. In recent years, many abandoned factories, railway yards,
warehouses and mills( 磨 坊 )have been transformed into cultural and tourist sites. According to the Ministry of
Industry and Information Technology, there are now 194 items on the country’s national industrial heritage list.
The 798 Art Zone in Beijing is an iconic example. Built in the 1950s as No. 718 Joint Factory, it was gradually
abandoned in the 1990s as production slowed down. In 2006, Beijing’s municipal government invested over 120
million yuan and improved its infrastructure( 基础设施)condition, turning the factory complex into a cultural and
creative industrial base. Now the art zone holds about 200 galleries, art centers as well as fashionable boutiques(
精品店), cafes, and restaurants, which also earns it a place on the bucket list of many tourists, noted The Paper.
Jack Liu is a frequenter of the art zone who visits it every weekend. “In the art zone, you can refresh memories
of the development of Chinese manufacturing through its old buildings,” said the 28-year-old to Teens. “However,
in art galleries here you will feel pulled into a fashionable, modern world. It’s amazing.”
Industrial heritage sites, which used to be filled with the rumbling of machines, are now precious pages of the
book on the industrial culture of China, noted People’s Daily.
Since these heritage sites are rich and diverse in content, cities in China also spare no effort to explore new
ways and models to protect and utilize them.
For example, a beer museum has been set up inside a century-old plant of the Tsingtao Brewery in Qingdao,
Shandong province, bringing people closer to the long history of the brewery. Some abandoned plants in Beijing
have also been remade for city explorers to take adventures in.
Just as the elderly need our care and love, these industrial heritages are also expected to be injected with
