Nadia, who dreamed of flying!
In the land of Romania, there once lived a little girl called Nadia. She was like a boy who was always running
around and getting her clothes dirty.
Nadia especially loved climbing trees! She would hang from the branches and swing up high before letting go
and flying through the air.
Even when Nadia was at home, she was always running around the kitchen or jumping on the bed. When she
was four, her mom took her to school. She told the teacher, “My daughter has too much energy! What can you do
with her?”
The teacher just laughed and said, “I think we have just the thing for Nadia!” The teacher took her to the school
gym. Nadia looked in wonder at the uneven bars (高低杠) and the balance beams and the mats, as well as the bigger
kids doing all kinds of flips and jumps. She felt right at home there!
The gymnastics (体操) team she joined was called The Flame, and Nadia soon became their brightest star.
Learning new moves gave her a feeling of achievement and the coach would give her chocolate if she worked hard!
Nadia loved the sense of freedom she felt while doing gymnastics. It was like flying! “I’m going to be the
greatest gymnast ever!” she would tell people.

Schools are supposed to be safe places for children. Sadly, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC)
has seen accidents happen in schools from time to time. For this reason, the ICRC began its education programme
in 2017. First aid training in schools around the world is one of its plans.
Khalida Asgarova is a 16-year-old student who wants to become a doctor. She lives in Aghdam in Azerbaijan.
She took part in ICRC’s first aid training in the spring of 2021. One important lesson she learned was that everyone
must take care of themselves first before helping others in emergency (紧急的) situations. Since attending the
training, Khalida has already helped her friend who hurt his hand with broken glass. She was able to stop the
bleeding and bandage the wound herself. She even taught some of the other students who could not attend the
training as well as her younger cousins some of the skills she learned.
“The training is important.” Khalida said. “The teachers and students in our school used to know little about
first aid. Now we can carry out some of the techniques correctly in different situations.”
Marisela Mujica teaches at a school in Venezuela. The most important thing Marisela learned from the first aid
training was to stay calm in order to do what makes her feel safe at the moment. The training has made her a strong
and confident person and an excellent first aider. She and other teachers have already treated small injuries. Besides,
they have taught their students some first aid techniques.
Thanks to the ICRC’s first aid training, many students and teachers, like Khalida and Marisela, have become
professional first aiders. While bringing these skills back to their families and communities, they will always carry
the feeling of safety, confidence and resilience within themselves.

We all need to quiet down! “The rising noise pollution in cities all over the world will become a top
environmental problem.” the United Nations (UN) said in a report on Feb. 17. It asks governments to take action to
solve the problem as soon as they can.
According to the UN, unwanted noise above 65 decibels (dB分贝) is noise pollution. Noise becomes harmful
when it’s over 75 dB and is painful above 120 dB. People who live near airports or highways get a lot of noise
6 初中产品 四季体系:暑假—秋季—寒假—春季pollution. When neighbors decorate their homes or stomp (跺脚) around above you, that’s also noise pollution.
“High levels of noise do harm to human health,” the UN report says. According to Science magazine, too much
noise is the reason for health problems like stress and tiredness from poor sleep. More serious problems include
heart disease and hearing loss. In Europe, 12,000 people die each year from effects of noise pollution, according to
CGTN.
The European Commission says that cities can fight noise pollution. One great way is to build barriers (围栏)
along railroads and highways. Some European countries have also built roads of rubber. It’s the same rubber as your
school’s running track. It makes cars quieter.
Some effective solutions include building houses as far from noise sources as possible, requiring factories to
make their products noise-free, and stopping the noise of cars in certain areas, and planting more trees in front of
buildings to reduce noise. How can you and I help? We can stop stomping around our houses.
In a word, with people experiencing dangerous sound levels on the rise, noise pollution has become a common
thing and environmental problem. The government and all the people around the world should try their best to help
