Chiara Beer suffered a serious stroke (中风) as a baby, which left her with the use of only one hand. After
overcoming the inconvenience brought about by the stroke, she began to post videos on the Internet to show people
how she lives with only one working hand and encourage other stroke survivors to become more independent.
When Chiara was younger, she was unable to find anyone else to turn to. And she found there was a huge
lack of resources about strokes, particularly among young people. Besides, she used to get many questions like how
she did her hair with one hand and things like that. Then she decided to start sharing some content on social media.
She shared her own story of stroke survival and showed her followers her daily life. For example, she has
shown them how she drives a specially adapted car and how technology helps her to read and write. Chiara said, “I
wanted to help raise awareness about young people who suffered strokes and help them to find a way to be able to
overcome their limitations.”
Chiara’s viewers have made many heartening comments on her videos. She received a lot of love and
support from them. They thanked her for showing them how to become a little more independent. “My baby girl
has had a stroke. Chiara’s videos give me hope that she can be independent one day. I think the hope that Chiara is
bringing to people is immeasurable,” a woman said.
More recently, Chiara’s work was discovered by a charity which supports stroke survivors. Lauren Hartney, part of the charity, said, “The main focus of our charity is peer support. A lot of the staff and volunteers are stroke
survivors themselves or they have a close personal connection to strokes. They use those personal experiences to
help other people who are going through the illness. So when I first came across Chiara’s videos, I knew
immediately she would be the perfect one to represent the charity.” Chiara is now working with the charity to help
more people.
24.For what did Chiara get the idea of sharing her life online?
A.To become famous on social media.
B.To remind people to post videos online.
C.To seek help from other stroke survivors.
D.To fill the gap in information on strokes in daily life.
25.How did Chiara’s videos help stroke survivors and their families?
A.By showing them how to live independently.
B.By encouraging them to do volunteer work.
C.By providing advice on medical treatment.
D.By offering solutions to family problems.
26.What kind of comment may have been made on Chiara’s videos?
A.Humorous. B.Inspirational. C.Critical. D.Abstract.
27.Why is Chiara considered the perfect one to represent the charity?
A.She is skilled in helping disabled kids in her community.
B.She could encourage others with her personal experiences.
C.She has a large number of social media followers.
D.She is experienced in making funny videos.

Whether it was nature or nurture (培养), I grew into a person who was a bit detached (冷漠的), which was
good for a career in journalism but not for emotional availability or a joyous life. In truth, I was a practiced escape
artist. If you revealed some defenseless intimacy to me, I was good at making meaningful eye contact with your
shoes and then excusing myself to keep a vitally important appointment with my dry cleaner.
Life has a way of making you tender, though. I’m not an exceptional person, but I am a grower.
I have learned something profound along the way. Being openhearted is an essential requirement for being a
full, kind and wise human being. But it is not enough. People need social skills: being curious about other people;
disagreeing without poisoning relationships; revealing vulnerability (脆弱性) at an appropriate pace; being a goodlistener; knowing how to ask for and offer forgiveness; knowing how to host a gathering where everyone feels
embraced; knowing how to see things from another’s point of view.
In any collection of humans, there are diminishers and there are illuminators. Diminishers are so into
themselves; they make others feel insignificant. They stereotype and label. If they learn one thing about you, they
continue to make a series of assumptions about who you must be.
Illuminators, on the other hand, have a persistent curiosity about other people. They have been trained or
have trained themselves in the craft of understanding others. They know how to ask the right questions at the right
times — so that they can see things, at least a bit, from another’s point of view. They shine the brightness of their
care on people and make them feel bigger, respected, lit up.
A person who radiates warmth will bring out the glowing sides of the people he meets, while a person who
conveys formality (固定流程) can meet the same people and find them stiff and detached. “Attention,” the
psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist writes, “is a moral act: It creates, brings aspects of things into being.”
28.What can we learn about the author in the first paragraph?
A.The author was expert at making excuses for escape.
B.The author was skilled at making eye contact with others.
C.The author was naturally suited for a career in journalism.
D.The author struggled with emotional availability and a joyous life.
29.What is the difference between “diminishers” and “illuminators” according to the author?
A.Diminishers are respectful, while illuminators are not.
B.Diminishers focus on themselves, while illuminators focus on others.
C.Diminishers are quite curious about others, while illuminators are not.
D.Diminishers are more social, while illuminators are extremely reserved.
30.What does the psychiatrist Iain McGilchrist mean by saying “Attention is a moral act”?
A.Paying attention requires moral effort.
B.Attention is a way to show one’s morality.
C.Giving attention to someone is a sign of respect.
D.Attention has the power to create and bring things into existence.
31.What’s the best title for this text?
A.The Importance of Social Skills B.The Art of Being an Illuminator
C.The Essential Skills for Being Human D.The Role of Attention in Human Relationships
DAstronauts embarking on long journeys in deep space can’t pack all the calories they will need in the form of
freeze-dried food. They also can’t grow everything they’ll need, as onboard garden technology isn’t mature enough
to turn out fresh produce. Given those nutritional restrictions, a group of engineers thinks future space travelers
should change their diets.
In a study published in The International Journal of Astrobiology, scientists suggest that astronauts could
look to asteroids (小行星) for all-you-can-eat meals.
They wouldn’t be chewing the rocks themselves. Instead, a chemical and physical process would break down
an asteroid’s material, and the resulting organic components would then be fed to bacteria. After the bacteria were
full, the astronauts could consume the collection of microbes (微生物) — more appetizingly referred to as
“biomass” (生物质).
This idea has origins in a more earthly project, sponsored by Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of
the US Department of Defense. One of the agency’s programs, ReSource, tasks researchers with taking plastic
waste produced by troops and turning it into something useful. Joshua Pearce, an engineering professor who is
collaborating on the project, thought they could turn those plastic food containers into more food. Dr. Pearce was
discussing this plastic work with his “space friends”, who pointed out that asteroids aren’t so different from plastic,
at least from the microbes’ perspective: they both contain a lot of carbon.
The problem is whether microbes will, in fact, eat asteroids. That’s something Annemiek Waajen of VU
Amsterdam has investigated, feeding bacteria meteorite (陨石) material pieces of space rock that have fallen to
Earth. They consumed its carbon and grew, according to her research. Dr. Waajen thinks asteroid food makes sense
biochemically, but that it will remain a curious idea for a while. “It is something that’s still a long way away,” she
said.
The space part gives Stephen Techtmann, a Michigan Technological University microbiologist, pause. “How
do those assumptions actually translate when you get it into that environment?” he said. One problem is that
asteroids are not chemical clones of each other. “Changing from asteroid to asteroid might be challenging,” he also
said.
Dr. Pearce is willing to try to sort that out, hoping to gather data demonstrating that the biomass meals are
likely to be produced and safe to consume. “I already promised I would be the first one to take a bite,” he said.
Despite the challenges of providing astronauts with a balanced and delicious diet, we believe that the end of
scientific exploration is finally a solution.
32.What trouble do astronauts in deep space have according to the passage?A.They possibly starve for lack of food. B.They are addicted to freeze-dried food.
C.They are dependent on fresh produce. D.They likely face nutritional imbalance.
33.What is the assumed alternative diet for astronauts?
A.Asteroids. B.Biomass. C.Bacteria. D.Meteorites.
34.Which of the following does Stephen Techtmann agree with?
A.It remains to be explored whether the project can be realized.
B.It is completely impracticable for microbes to eat asteroids.
C.There is doubt arising about the safety of the microbe meal.
D.There is no need to continue with this asteroid project.
35.What’s the author’s attitude to the idea of looking to asteroids for meals?
A.Intolerant B.Doubtful C.Favorable D.Dismissive
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Whether personal or professional, you likely have goals you’re striving to achieve. Yet, as much as you want
to accomplish a certain goal or task, you may sometimes wonder how to motivate yourself. 36 .
Find a responsible partner
Having a responsible partner can be an effective type of motivation to help you stay on track. Telling others
about your plans or goals might help you feel more encouraged to actually achieve them.
Shake up your environment
37 . Creating a welcoming environment that feels good to be in and contributes to staying focused
on your goals is important. Small details like plenty of sunlight or adding a plant to your desk can all help.
38
Sometimes, it can be easy to lose motivation if you feel like you’re not making enough progress toward a big
goal. If you start to feel this way, reflect on your progress. You might be surprised to look back and realize just how
far you’ve come.
When measuring progress, focus on measuring behaviors over results. For example, if you want to become a
better writer and publish a story, measure your research, drafts, and discussions on the topic. 39 . Even
though you don’t have complete control over the outcome, you have full control over your behaviors.
Schedule breaks in your day
Breaks allow your brain to rest and digest all the information you’ve just taken in. 40 . For
example, surfing the Internet still requires your brain to process information and make decisions. Doing a smallchore, going for a walk, or taking a power coffee nap are all great alternatives.
A.Track your progress
B.Stay optimistic and trust yourself
C.In fact, even a short break helps avoid burnout
D.Our working environments are full of distractions
E.Managing to write a little bit every day is even better
F.The following tips can serve as guides on how to get motivated
G.However, not all types of breaks provide the same amount of restfulness

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A young man went to visit the oldest and wisest man in the village for some advice on how he could become
rich.
“Treasure is yours to be had at the top of Yonder Mountain,” advised the wise old man as he pointed to a tall
mountain in the distance. “You must travel on foot to the top of the mountain. There you will find riches beyond
your imagination. Once you leave the top of the mountain, whatever remains will be lost forever.”
Then, pointing to a long, heavy log lying on the ground in front of the house, the wise old man added, “You
must carry this log on your journey to the top of the mountain to claim your treasure.”
The young man was not pleased with this sudden surprise, but he respected the wise old man and as he lifted
the long, heavy log onto his shoulders and struggled down the road towards the mountain, he realized that the trip
would not be as easy as he thought.
After he walked for a while, a woodman came up to him and said, “It looks like that log is pretty heavy.
Would you like me to cut some of it off to make it lighter?”
The young man was exhausted, so he said, “I suppose that a little bit cut off the end wouldn’t hurt.” And the
woodman cut two inches off the end.
A while later the young man met a farmer on his way back from the fields. And the farmer helped him cut
two inches off the end.At the bottom of the mountain, the young man met a trapper who helped him cut four more inches off the
log.
