Animals in the wild must be very clever and quick to stay safe from danger. Just like you play hide and seek
(捉迷藏), animals have their own ways of hiding and staying away from things that might hurt them. Their ears,
noses, and eyes are all super important for sensing danger around them.
Some animals, like rabbits, have big ears that can hear really well, so they can listen for any sounds that
might mean trouble. Also, their eyes are on the sides of their heads, letting them see around without having to turn
their heads.
Animals like chameleons can change their color to hide from predators (捕食者) by looking very much like
the trees and leaves they live in. Imagine being able to turn the color of the wall in your room to hide during hide
and seek!
When some animals feel scared (恐惧的), they try to look big and scary, like porcupines who make their
spikes (刺) stand up. Some animals, like opossums, even act asleep or don’t move so that a predator will think they
are dead and not fun to eat and leave them alone.
When in groups, animals help each other out. Meerkats, for example, have one friend watch out for danger
while the others look for food. In this way, there are always extra ( 额外的 ) eyes looking for safety .
By using their bodies and working together, animals have smart ways to stay safe in the wild!

Recently, many people think it’s risky to use credit (信用) card numbers online. However, from time to time,
we all use passwords and ID numbers on the Internet. We think we are safe, but that may not be true! A new kind of
attack (攻击) is being used by dishonest people to steal IDs and credit card numbers from web surfers. This new
kind of attack is called “phishing”.
Phishing sounds the same as the word “fishing”, and it means that a thief is trying to trick people into giving
away valuable information. Like real fishermen, phishers use bait (诱饵) in the form of great online deals or
services. For example, phishers might use false emails and website s to trick people into revealing (透露) credit
card numbers, account usernames, and passwords. They imitate (模仿) well-known banks, online sellers, and credit
card companies. Successful phishers may make as many as 5% of the people believe and give away their personal
information.
It’s really a big problem! Actually, tricking 5% of the online population is huge. Now more than 4.6 billion
people have access (进入权) to the Internet, and 75% of those Internet users live in the wealthiest countries on
Earth. It has been reported that phishers send more than 40 billion false messages each year. Even by tricking only.
5% of the people, phishers can make a lot of money.
Amy, 18, from California, received an email. A man told Amy that she could get a million dollars in her
account as a reward if she sent a thousand dollars to him. Amy did as the man said at once. The “thief” used Amy’s
Social Security number to get credit cards in her name and transferred her money.
How can people avoid being cheated online? Above all, they have to learn to recognize the email that has
been sent by a phisher. Always be careful with any email with urgent (紧急的) requests for personal information.
Phishers typically write upsetting or exciting, but false statements in their emails so that people will reply right
away. Never give out personal information to phishers. And if an offer sounds too good to be true, it is.
1.How is the word “phishing” explained in the passage?
A.By using passwords and ID numbers. B.By attacking dishonest people.
C.By comparing to catching fish. D.By giving away valuable information.
2.What’s the purpose of phishers?

Technology is helping people to give first aid. It helps save lives faster. Technology not only makes our lives
easier, it can also save lives. People who have sudden health emergencies (紧急情况) like heart disease or
accidents may only have a few minutes to live unless they get help. We can use technology to offer help faster.
Let’s look at some technological inventions that are helping save lives.
Smart app
Some people in the US made an app called Pulse Point. It invites common people trained in CPR (心肺复苏术) to
use it. The app knows the users’locations. If someone needs first aid nearby, a user will get a message asking them
to help.
Magic gel (凝胶)
The gel can stop someone bleeding (流血) in just 10 seconds. It is made from plants. It can stick to a wound and
help seal (密封) it. It was invented more than 10 years ago but was only allowed to be used on animals. Now in the
US, it has been allowed to be used on humans, too. And the person from the US was only 17 years old when he
invented it!
Flying aid
If people get injured or need help in hard-to-reach areas, drones (无人机) can be of great use. Because they can fly,
drones can often offer help faster than people. And they can also make helping people safer for rescuers(营救者)
working in dangerous conditions. The drones can have a camera that can watch your health. They can also carry
useful things, like blankets or a life jacket to save someone from drowning (溺水).
1.According to the passage, who do you think will be invited to use Pulse Point?
A.A traffic policeman providing service on the roads.
B.A middle school teacher who received CPR training.
