(2022·长沙市新高考适应性考试)All human societies play games. Kicking a ball can be found everywhere
whether the ball is just a ball of cloth, or a skin stuffed_with feathers or air.
But complex games and team sports have tended to arise in big civilizations — the higher the cultural level of
a society is, the greater the complexity of the interaction is — and hence perhaps the more complex the forms of
sports are.
This is not always the case. The ancient Greeks, for example, preferred the individual rather than team
sports. But in China for well over 2,000 years, people played the game of “kickball” — cuju. The members were
often young men from wealthy families though there were also professional kickball players.
Cuju was played as entertainment at court banquets or the reception of foreign ambassadors. Even emperors
played kickball.
As you'd expect in a Confucian society, kickball clubs were keen on the key qualities of mercy and courtesy. A
great player was one who showed “the spirit of the game”. The “Ten Essentials of Kickball” included respect for
other players, polite behaviours and team spirit. There was to be no ungentlemanly behaviour, no dangerous play,
and no hogging (独占) the ball. In other words, as we used to say, “Play up and play the game.”
What a contrast with the ancient Greek athletics where only victory counted and if that needed
gamesmanship, or cruel professional fouls (犯规), then so be it.
As a way of national culture protection, cuju was listed into the first batch of China's intangible cultural
heritage in 2006.

(2022·安徽省第二次质量检测)Although computer technology is often necessary today, using a pen or a
pencil activates more areas of your brain than a keyboard does. You can potentially remember more by
handwriting, according to a new study.
The potential benefits of handwriting for memory have been debated for some time. The new study was
carried out to answer one question: How does handwriting compare to using a keyboard when it comes to
remembering new information?
In all, 24 participants took part. Researchers asked each of them to write with a pen and then each was also
asked to type on a keyboard. While performing these tasks, each volunteer wore a cap that held electrodes next to
their head. It looked somewhat like a hairnet equipped with 256 sensors. Those sensors recorded the participants'
brainwaves. The electrodes noted which parts of the brain were turned on during each task. And they showed that
writing turned on the memory area in the brain while typing didn't.
Audrey van der Meer, the new study's leader, says this suggests that when we write by hand, we remember
better. “This is because writing involves complex movements that activate more areas of the brain. The increased
brain activity gives the brain more ‘hooks’ to hang on to your memories,” she explains. Audrey van der Meer
also points out that writing by hand is related to visual note-taking. “Rather than typing blindly, the visual notetaker
has to think about what is important to write down. Then, key words can be interlinked by boxes, arrows and small
drawings,” she adds.
This study does not recommend banning digital devices. In fact, its authors point out that computers and other
devices with keyboards have become necessary in modern society. Keyboarding can especially benefit those with
certain special needs (such as if they have trouble using their hands) and typing beats writing when it comes to

brainwaves.可知,参与者被要求在研究中戴帽子是为了记录他们的脑电波。
9.What does Audrey van der Meer try to explain?
A.Why handwriting is more complex than typing.
B.Why the brain works when it comes to learning.
C.Why handwriting helps remember new information.
D.Why key words are helpful to visual note-taking.

A.It relieves people's hands.
B.It remains vital and helpful.
C.It is not worth recommending.
D.It is more challenging than writing.

(2022·东北三校第一次联考)Android phones will be used to sense earthquakes around the world and may one
day be able to provide global warnings, with the first mass alert system coming into use on 11 August in California,

学科网(北京)股份有限公司a search engine company announced.
The company, which helped develop Android, worked with California and the United States Geological
Survey to build the quake alerts into all phones that run the common mobile operating system. Android users who
have enabled location services and are near a quake of magnitude 4.5 or greater will receive a full-screen
earthquake warning telling them to seek cover. The screen will also provide estimates of the quake's magnitude and
distance from the user. Depending on their distance from a quake, people could get several seconds or perhaps a
minute of warning.
Users won't need to download California's MyShake app in order to receive the alerts. That application,
developed by the University of California, Berkeley and launched last year, has been downloaded by only about 1
million of California's 40 million residents. By contrast, many millions of people own Android phones.
“This announcement means that California's world-class earthquake early warning system will be a standard
function on every Android phone — giving millions of people precious seconds to seek cover and hold on when the
big one hits,” Gov. Gavin Newsom said in a statement. The iPhone users won't receive the alerts through
Apple's operating system, but they can download the MyShake app.
Also, the company announced that Android phones would begin detecting earthquakes from around the world
through their motion-sensing accelerometers. “Your Android phone can be a mini-seismometer, joining millions of
other Android phones out there to form the world's largest earthquake detection network,” according to a blog
post of the company. More than 2 billion devices run the Android operating system. Hundreds of millions of
people live in earthquake-prone areas. But many countries lack the resources to build detection and alert systems,
the company said. The information will be used at first to provide fast and accurate information on the search
engine. But the company said it could begin sending out earthquake alerts next year.

(2022·河南省高考适应性测试)Growing your own garden — whether it's indoors, in your backyard, in the
schoolyard or part of a plot in a community garden — can do more than provide tasty produce and beautiful
flowers.
If you're feeling a little blue, grab your shovel (铁铲) and head to the garden. __16__ It decreases depression,
anxiety and anger and increases happiness. Gardening can also fight stress better than other relaxing leisure
activities like reading.
Gardening burns calories, which is good for your waistline. Both men and women who garden are less likely
to be overweight than their non-gardening neighbors and friends. In fact, gardening burns about 300 calories an
hour. __17__
When surrounded by plants, we tend to be more productive and creative. This is a great reason to add plants to
your classroom or office. __18__ Daily gardening lowers the risk of dementia (痴呆) by 36 percent, even when a
range of other health factors are taken into account.
__19__ Adults who grow their own produce consume more fruits and vegetables. Even kids, who tend to be
our pickiest eaters, eat more greens when a garden is projected in their school, community or after-school setting.
Home-grown produce is not only tastier than store-bought produce, it's also healthier.
So, join the people who garden. __20__ Even if you have very little space or experience, you can start out with
just a few house plants or garden in containers. So instead of a TV binge this weekend, try getting down and dirty
in your backyard. Grab some gloves, a shovel and dig in.
