When it comes to choosing a new destination to explore, some travelers are content to pick
locations close to home, while others are willing to go to the ends of the earth. Here are some remote
destinations that few people will have the chance to experience.
Tristan da Cunha
The island of Tristan da Cunha is set in the south Atlantic Ocean, 1,743 miles east of Cape
Town, South Africa. Home to just 246 people, the island is an active volcano and its main town,
Edinburgh of the Seven Seas, was nearly destroyed in 1961 following an eruption. Travelers hoping
to experience Tristan need to plan in advance, as permission from the Administrator and Island
Council is required to visit.
Ittoqqortoormiut, Greenland
The small settlement of Ittoqqortoormiut, Greenland, is set between Northeast Greenland
National Park and Scoresby Sund, the world’s largest national park. Its 450 residents live in brightly
painted wooden houses that sit on permafrost, locked in nine months of sea ice and total darkness
each winter. The village can be accessed only by helicopter or boat. There are varieties of wildlife in
this region, including polar bears, narwhals, and walruses.
Longyearbyen, Norway
It is located about halfway between Norway and the North Pole, and has become a destination
for travelers hoping to see both the northern lights and polar bears. Longyearbyen, a town of around
2,000 people, is dotted with colorful houses dating back to its heyday(鼎盛期)as a mining town.
The region is completely dark for two-and-a-half months every winter, and the sun shines 24/7 in the
summer.
Grise Fiord, Nunavut, Canada
Located on Ellesmere Island, Grise Fiord, or Aujuittugin Inuktitut, is the northernmost
settlement in Canada. The Inuit village of 141 people is located in the Arctic Cordillera mountain
range, and visitors can take in the area’s various wildlife, including narwhals, seals, beluga whales,
walruses, musk oxen, and polar bears.

In 1998, British adventurer Karl Bushby looked down a road in Chile and set a goal: walk all
the way home to Hull, England — without using a single form of transport, which was audacious.
What he didn’t know then was that the journey he thought would take eight years would stretch into
a remarkable 27-year trek (跋涉) across continents, oceans and history. Now, after walking 36,000
miles, surviving the attack of polar bears, swimming across seas, and navigating countless visa
setbacks, the 56-year-old adventurer is finally on the home stretch.
Bushby began his adventure in Punta Arenas, Chile, trekking north through South and North
America, eventually reaching Alaska. In 2006, he attempted one of the most dangerous legs of the
journey: crossing the frozen Bering Strait into Siberia. Armed with a gun to scare off polar bears and
forced to leap between moving blocks of ice, he achieved what few people on Earth have ever done.
His challenges didn’t stop there. Last year, when he couldn’t safely travel through a European
country, he took on a new challenge — swimming across the Caspian Sea. With a support team and
co-swimmer Angela Maxwell, Bushby spent 31 days completing the 179-mile crossing, swimming a
total of 132 hours.
After reaching Azerbaijan, he continued through Turkey, and now stands less than 2,000 miles
from home. He hopes to recenter Europe this summer and walk into Hull by September 2026.
Returning home after nearly three decades, he admits, will feel unrealistic. He left when he was 29.
He will return at 58. He says reuniting with family will mean “getting to know each other again”.
Bushby walks an average of 30km a day and rests wherever he can find shelter. His mission,
called the Goliath Expedition, has outlasted five UK prime ministers, a global health incident, and
numerous wars — but his spirit remains as strong as it was in 1998. And the world is cheering him
on as he enters the final chapter of one of the most extraordinary human endurance journeys ever
attempted.
24. What does the underlined word “audacious” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Common.
B. Meaningless.
C. Ambitious.
D. Practical.
25. Why did Bushby swim across the Caspian Sea?
A. To set a new world record.
B. To avoid the potential risk.
C. To shorten the distance.
D. To test his physical limits.
26. What does Bushby mean by saying “getting to know each other again”?
A. It is awkward to see his family.
B. It is too long since he left home.
C. He feels regretful for traveling.
D. He wants to accompany his family more.
27. What does the Goliath Expedition symbolize?
A. The power of spirit.
B. The need for recognition.
C. The meaning of exploration.
D. The importance of adaptation.

(原创)The rise of lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries in electric vehicles has led to a growing
number of retired batteries, posing a significant challenge for sustainable energy development.
Chinese scientists have now introduced a green recycling strategy that extracts lithium with over 95
percent efficiency under mild conditions.
Published in Nature Communications, the study reveals an innovative method using only carbon
dioxide and water — similar to making carbonated beverages. The approach not only recovers
lithium but also transforms other metals into high-value materials while capturing carbon dioxide.
"Lithium-ion batteries typically degrade after five to eight years, making recycling essential for
conserving strategic metals like lithium, cobalt and nickel," said Sun Zhi, a professor at the Chinese
Academy of Sciences and the study's corresponding author.
Traditional recycling methods often consume large amounts of energy and chemicals. Some
require prolonged melting at temperatures exceeding 1,000°C, while others involve multiple
chemical steps that generate wastewater and hazardous waste.
To address these issues, the research team developed a method using carbon dioxide as the main
material. They grind the battery material to change its structure, causing lithium atoms to move to the
particle surface. Scientists then soak the material in water and introduce carbon dioxide. Tiny
particles from dissolved carbon dioxide react with the lithium, dissolving it into liquid while leaving
other metals unaffected.
By heating the resulting liquid, scientists obtain lithium carbonate — a key battery material —
with purity exceeding 99.5 percent. The solid material left after lithium extraction is not waste; it
becomes a high-performance substance stable for over 200 hours of use.
"This process uses very few chemicals and offers an innovative green solution for recycling
spent lithium-ion batteries," Sun said, emphasizing its potential to support China's goals of peaking
carbon emissions before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality before 2060.
28. What does the new recycling method use as its main materials?
A. High heat and strong chemicals.
B. Carbon dioxide and water.
C. Lithium and cobalt.
D. Wastewater and hazardous waste
29. The underlined word “degrade” in paragraph 3 most probably means ______.
A. become weaker
B. catch fire
C. get heavier
D. change color
30. What can be inferred about the solid material left after lithium extraction?
A. It has no further use and must be thrown away.
B. It can serve as a valuable material for other purposes.
C. It needs to be processed again to extract more lithium.
D. It is more harmful to the environment than before.
31. What is Sun Zhi's attitude toward the new recycling method?
A. Doubtful
B. Critical
C. Supportive
D. Unconcerned

( 热门话题)Innovations in technology and in foreign trade are closely interconnected and
mutually reinforcing. On the one hand, technological innovation is a key force in breaking through
the limits of traditional economic growth and driving the transformation of foreign trade dynamics.
As a core element in the development of new quality productive forces ( 新质生产力),
technological innovations can foster new forms, models and momentum in foreign trade.
On the other hand, innovations in foreign trade provide application scenarios for technological
breakthroughs. The application of major scientific and technological achievements in industries can
trigger (激发)a significant transformation in productivity. Therefore, it is necessary to accelerate (加
速)the deep integration of technological innovation with foreign trade innovation.
Developing new advantages in China’s international economic cooperation relies
fundamentally on the vigorous advancement of new quality productive forces. First, it is essential to
firmly anchor technological innovation as the core element and strengthen institutional support for
emerging ( 新兴的)fields and future industries. A sound legal and market environment must be
created to protect and encourage innovation. Through technological innovation, the country can
continuously empower industrial upgrading and foster the robust growth of new foreign trade
models.
Second, it is crucial to focus on building a modern industrial system as the main direction of
future efforts. By promoting deep integration between innovation and industries, cutting-edge
technologies can be applied to the key links of supply chains, transforming and upgrading traditional
trade approaches while nurturing and expanding new business forms in foreign trade.
Finally, China needs to uphold high-standard opening-up, steadily advance institutional
opening-up, and engage in international economic cooperation and scientific and technological co-
operation at a higher level. This will broaden international circulation and create stronger momentum
for innovation-driven foreign trade growth.
Efforts should be made to coordinate moves to strengthen the domestic market and build China
into a leading trading power. Taking the initiative to open China’s door wider and steadily advance
institutional opening-up will drive reform and foster development, enabling new breakthroughs in
the dual circulation of domestic and international markets.
China’s development of new energy vehicles has set a strong example. The country has
adopted a forward-looking strategy at the national level to speed the deep integration of
technological and industrial innovation. Leveraging the strengths of the new national system for
mobilizing nationwide resources, China has proactively generated more original and innovative
technological achievements.
32. What can we know about “new quality productive forces” from the passage?
A. They focus more on the home market than global trade.
B. They involve more than just technological progress.
C. They are measured by how much trade increases.
D. They reduce the need for working with other countries.
33. Why is China’s new energy vehicle industry mentioned in the passage?
A. To show the results of mixing technology and trade innovation.
B. To point out slow changes in other industries.
C. To stress the advantages of a self-dependent economic system.
D. To advise relying less on international technology exchange.
34. How is the passage organized?
A. By comparing different views and finding a middle way.
B. By describing the history of technology in foreign trade.
C. By comparing development methods in different countries.
D. By stating a main idea and then explaining supporting points.
35.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. Technology: The Sole Trade Engine
B. Trade Power: A National Goal
C. Tech and Trade: Mutual Drivers
D. New Energy Vehicles: An Example

(原创)As we start our workday and step into our professional roles, we often feel we have to
leave part of ourselves behind.
3 6
We might hide our playful side or the parts of us that
seem less serious. It’s as if we treat these personal qualities like old socks, to be left at home, or a
loyal dog, waiting faithfully for our return after work.
3 7 We show our polished, professional side — the one that is serious and well-organized
— while shutting down our more authentic, relaxed self. After all, it’s called “work,” so this is
probably what is expected of us. It seems normal because everyone else appears to be doing the same
thing.
However, when we do this, we are actually creating a less effective working environment, not just
for ourselves but for our coworkers and managers as well.
3 8
It can limit our creative
thinking, lower our performance, and reduce our social connection with colleagues.
When we bring our whole selves to work, we bring our unique viewpoints and life experiences to
our tasks. This can lead to more creative solutions and help us develop lasting habits that support
both our professional success and personal well-being.
3 9
So, the next time you head into the office or log on for the day, consider what it might mean to
bring your full self.

Six years as a space reporter taught me that chaos rules everything. Nothing is completely
predictable or controlled. I have watched enough go wrong to know that no view of a celestial (天空

Jupiter and Venus also played roles in this performance. It felt like bearing 52 to

Four minutes later, the eclipse 53 . The sun brightened again. And the clouds 54

(新情景)There are few things worse than a busker (街头艺人) with something to prove, yet
overlooking that self-acceptance mattered most. I met such a person.
It was a warm Thursday afternoon in May. I was staying at a party hostel, a type of hotel
designed primarily for young travelers, seeking a social, lively atmosphere rather than just a quiet
place to sleep. It was mostly filled with people waiting for the night to begin. Some were reading,
others, like me, were working remotely. Another group was sitting lazily on the sofas, quietly
watching Shrek projected onto a small wall-mounted screen. For a brief moment in time, it seemed
possible to live in harmony with strangers — before all was interrupted by a girl’s appearance.
The girl, with golden hair, came in and settled herself among the movie-watchers. She pulled out
a guitar and began her performance. To her, the room wasn’t full of travelers longing for peace and
quiet. She didn’t see people napping (小憩), enjoying a movie or working. She saw an audience and
considered it an opportunity to show her voice and prove she could sing well.
She sang the song, “I’m a loser”, glancing at everyone in the hostel with the intention of hearing
people’s words of praise. Maybe that was exactly why her voice sounded somewhat trembling. As
for the audience, it was probably because her singing was so unsteady that none of them wanted to
look up. As a result, meaningful eye contact was made with everyone, anyone except her, as they
reached an unspoken agreement that to acknowledge her presence would be to encourage it. So as
she sang, no one nodded along.
When the song came to a close, nobody spoke or clapped. Finally, she sighed loudly, took a
breath, and glanced at everyone with a disappointed look. It was at this moment that I looked up my
head and met her eyes, which reminded me of my similar experience.
