Grading Criteria and Detailed Rules for the Extended Writing of the English Composition in the College Entrance Examination

Introduction

The extended writing section of the English composition in the college entrance examination is an essential part of evaluating students' language proficiency and writing skills. To ensure fair and accurate grading, specific criteria and detailed rules are set to assess students' performance objectively.

Grading Criteria

1. Content (30%)

- Relevance: Does the essay address the given topic and demonstrate a clear understanding of the prompt?

- Completeness: Are the key plot points required by the two opening sentences fully developed?

- Rationality: Is the plot consistent with the original passage in logic, character setting and emotional tone? No unreasonable or out-of-context plots are allowed.

- Thematic Value: Does the writing convey positive values and complete the theme sublimation naturally?

2. Language (40%)

- Accuracy: Are words, grammar, tense and sentence structures used correctly? Do spelling and punctuation errors interfere with reading comprehension?

- Richness: Can students use diverse vocabulary and varied sentence structures (simple, compound and complex sentences)?

- Appropriateness: Is the tone of language in line with the story context and character identity?

3. Coherence (30%)

- Logical Connection: Are proper cohesive devices (transition words, pronouns, logical conjunctions) used to connect sentences and paragraphs?

- Textual Consistency: Is the whole passage smooth, with natural transitions between the two paragraphs?

- Structure: Each paragraph has a clear focus, and the story develops in an orderly way.

Detailed Scoring Rules

The full mark of extended writing is 25 points, divided into five grading bands.

Band 5 (21–25 points)

The plot is fully relevant and reasonable, with complete story development and natural theme promotion. Language is accurate, rich and appropriate, with rare minor mistakes. The whole text flows smoothly with effective cohesive links.

Band 4 (16–20 points)

The plot is relevant and basically reasonable, with most key information covered. There are a few language errors, but they do not hinder understanding. Cohesive devices are used properly and the text is coherent.

Band 3 (11–15 points)

Part of the plot is related to the prompt, but some details are insufficient. There are certain language errors, which slightly affect reading. Basic logical connections can be seen.

Band 2 (6–10 points)

Only a small part of the content is relevant. Major language errors frequently appear and block understanding. The connection between sentences is weak.

Band 1 (1–5 points)

The content is barely related to the prompt. Severe language mistakes can be seen in most sentences. Hardly any logical cohesion exists.

Penalty Rules

1.Word count: If the total words are less than 130, deduct 2 points from the total score.

2.Plagiarism: Large copied sentences irrelevant to the given story will result in lower grading band.

3.Handwriting: Illegible handwriting that affects reading will lead to appropriate point deduction.

Conclusion

These standards focus on both story creation and language competence. They guide students to continue the story logically, use language flexibly and construct coherent passages, so as to examine students' core literacy in English.
