Have you checked the oil in the car? My father used to say to me. “Hello, hope you are well.” Sometimes our
phone calls would begin with a question about the oil and end with a question about the oil, with not a lot inbetween.
Fathers have a lot of love to give, but it’s often supplied through the medium(方法)of practical advice. In
my experience: It’s mostly about my car.
“How’s the car running?” “Did you get it serviced?” “How did you get that scrape(刮痕)on the side?”
Why can’t we fathers just say “I love you” or “It’s great to see you”? The point is: That’s exactly what we are
saying. You just have to translate from the language that is Fatherlish.
The words “You made my life better from the moment you were born” may be hardly heard, but the key is
there in the more common. “I’ll hold the ladder while you get the leaves out of the gutter(排水沟).”
When I was 17, I went on my first road trip—a friend and I in that old car. My father stood on the corner early
on a cold morning to say goodbye to us.
“Highways are dangerous,” he said, “so don’t try to catch up with anything faster than a horse. And take a
break every two hours. And every time you stop for gas, you really should check the oil.”
At the time we thought his speech was pretty humorous and would chant “car and horse, car and horse” every
time I drove faster and passed other speeding cars.
Dad’s long gone now. But after all these years, I realize that had I owned a copy of the Fatherlish-to-English
dictionary, I’d have understood that the speech my friend and I so casually mocked(嘲笑)was simply Dad’s
attempt at affection.
28.What did the father usually talk about with the writer?
A.The writer’s job. B.The writer’s schoolwork.
C.The writer’s car. D.The writer’s friend.
29.What did his father do when the writer took his first road trip?
A.He told him to ride a horse. B.He told him not to drive too fast.
C.He advised him not to take breaks. D.He gave him money to buy oil.
30.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Car and Horse B.My first road trip
C.Father’s practical advice D.Father’s love

Most people agree that the last couple of years have been stressful. Jessica Martin, who teaches art at West
Side School in Healdsburg, California, thought her students just might have the magic words needed to bring calm
to people in these difficult times. So, she, along with artist Asherah Weiss, worked with students at West Side on a
project, PepToc.
The project had two parts—one was the hotline, and the other was creating encouraging posters. The two
adults had the same basic question for all the students: “What could you say to help or encourage someone else?”
Students working on the hotline thought of what they would like to say. When they were ready, Ms. Martin
recorded each one in English and Spanish. Later, she divided the recordings into the different parts of the telephone
hotline. Pressing 1 brings up ideas for people who are “feeling mad, or nervous”. One of the helpful suggestions is
“go get a cookie”. Pressing 2 results in “words of encouragement and life advice”. This includes messages like:
“The world is a better place with you in it.” And “You are okay!” By pressing 3, you can hear a group of kidssaying together: “You can do it! Keep trying, don’t give up!” Pressing 4 brings you the sounds of children giggling
and laughing—a sound certain to bring a smile to anyone’s face.
Other students took part in making encouraging posters, which were hung up around the town. Many posters
had pieces of paper that people passing by could tear(撕)off and take with them.
Ms. Martin thought the project would only attract interest from people near the school. But the hotline was
soon getting hundreds of calls a day—and then, thousands of calls an hour. Now it has been popular with stressed
adults, patients in hospitals, older people in homes, and others who just want to hear the happy voices of children.
31.From Paragraph 1, we mainly get to know the ________ of starting the project PepToc.
A.date B.cause C.process D.cost
32.The person who ________ can call PepToc and press 1 to get useful advice.
A.wants to give up B.needs help with cooking
C.likes to learn languages D.is feeling stressed out
33.It can be inferred(推断)from the last paragraph that the project ________ .
A.is a great success B.is a waste of time
C.needs more attention D.brings people good luck
D
All young people dream of travelling the world. They are excited and very eager to see new sights. However,
they have little idea how they would really do it if given the chances. Because their knowledge of geography is
quite limited, they seldom know much about the places they wish to visit or how they would get there.
Already hundreds of thousands of Chinese student tourists are visiting these places—Wuyi, Lhasa, Lijiang,
Dali, Vientiane and Phnom Penh. Indeed, these students will soon be the most travelled generation in China’s long
history. The World Tourist Organization predicts that a quarter of a century from now the number of Chinese
tourists going abroad will be twenty times what it is today. The largest percentage of these tourists will visit
Southeast Asia. Not all Chinese who travel abroad will be tourists, however. More and more youths are deciding to
volunteer their skills in this region, much like their peers in the Peace Corps and VSO.
Critical thinking skills required include planning for a trip and solving problems after the trip has begun. The
focus is on how to read an atlas (地图集) to make travel plans and how to find ways of travelling. An atlas offers a
wealth of information about geography and is one way to increase students’ awareness of their global environment.
The use of an atlas especially addresses the needs of students with different visual and spatial (空间的) learning
styles.
34.The main idea of the first paragraph is __________.
A.all young people wish to travel around the world
B.all young people like to learn the knowledge of geography
C.all young people like travelling but their knowledge of geography is quite limited
D.all young people are aware of the places they are going to
35.What does the World Tourist Organization predict?
A.The number of Chinese tourists going abroad will be twenty times what it is today in about twenty fiveyears.
B.The number of Chinese tourists going abroad will be twenty times what it is today in about ten years.
C.Students will soon be the most travelled generation in China’s long history.
D.Chinese people travel abroad to relax themselves.
36.One way to increase students’ awareness of their global environment is for them to __________.
A.watch TV B.listen to radio news C.read an atlas D.plan a trip
37.What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A.Students know nothing about how to plan a trip.
B.Critical thinking skills are necessary when travelling.
C.Southeast Asia will be the most popular place in the world.
D.Young people will be crazy about Internet travelling.

一个单词。
Things adults should learn from kids
Adults should learn from kids a lot. For example, kids tend to show love. Every action they do for others, is
filled with love. They don’t think twice before loving, and they just love. So adults also need to know: the best way
to receive love is to first give it. Unluckily, most of us have developed the habit of questioning everything.
Kids never hide emotions. They cry when they hurt themselves, and express displeasure when things don’t go
their way. However, we adults always try to hide our feelings, and never express ourselves sincerely. Crying or
expressing oneself is what normal people do. Never hold back tears or happiness.
Kids are curious little beings, who always try to understand their surroundings by completely involving
themselves in every task they undertake. They have a huge taste for knowledge, and ask lots of questions every day.
This curious nature guides their life, and often leads them to simple excellent discoveries. Are adults as curious as
kids? Well, most of us aren’t. Also, they no longer have the thirst for knowledge, and don’t even ask questions if
they don’t understand something. Adults often forget that it isn’t talent or skill but our curiosity and a huge taste for
knowledge that makes us worthy.
Kids live in the present, and give 100% to any task they are doing. They never worry about the future, and
since they are so busy enjoying their present, life is great today. However, with a job, money, and relationships, it
does get hard for an adult to enjoy life. The best thing to do here is to change oneself, and if that isn’t possible, we
can live like a child. Just don’t worry about the future, because it isn’t in your control. The only thing you can
control is your present, so work hard toward it.
阅读以上信息, 用恰当的单词完成下面的表格, 每空一词。
