I joined a band as a guitar player in my middle school. I thought it would be fun playing the guitar and
meeting new friends. At first it was easy, but a month later, it got difficult. I was the only one who couldn’t catch up
with the other players.
Our teacher, Angie, asked me to keep practicing while everyone else got to relax. Finally, I got so tired of
practicing that I didn’t care about doing it right. Angie sent me inside the music room, where I cried out. Then she
came in and said, “Don’t be sad. I believe you can make it!” She told me never to give up. I realized Angie was
right-by giving up, I was also giving up on the team and myself. Hearing her words, I decided to go on practicing.
My teammates also gave me a hand. They spent about three more hours practicing with me every week. Thanks to
their support and help, I began to keep up with them. Later, we performed wonderfully in an important show.In the whole process, I was taught that although we each had our own job to do in a show, it would take all of
us working together to make the show great.

Love, joy and the warm feeling of getting together don’t cost a thing. But gifts do cost money. So what should
a poor family do?
When I was 10, I told my mother that the only thing I wanted for the New Year was a pogo stick(弹簧单高跷).
However, my mother said it was so expensive that we couldn’t afford one.
On a Saturday before New Year, my family went shopping together. While my mother and I were picking out
the gifts, my dad said, “I’ll be back soon-I need to see something in the tool area.” A moment later, he came back
with a long box. I remembered wondering if there was a pogo stick in it.
When we arrived home, my dad put the box in the garage. While my parents were busy with their chores, I
quietly walked out to the garage and found the box. I was so excited and I knew as soon as I opened that magical
box, my bright, shiny pogo stick would appear. No such luck! Inside the box was a silly old broom(扫帚).
That New Year morning, I got some gifts like a tiger toy and a saving pot, but I didn’t get the present that I
really wanted. How upset I felt at that moment though I didn’t want my parents to see!
After cleaning up the room, my dad went to the garage. When he came back, he was carrying a beautiful pogo
stick. I couldn’t believe it! My parents probably got quite a laugh from the trick they played on me.
Although we didn’t have much money, my parents gave me the most important gift of all: lots of love. That
was over 60 years ago and I still think about those wonderful memories. They were full of my childhood. I will
never forget all the joy my parents brought into my life.

It might be strange to wear clothes made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, some clothing companies are
already making clothes like these.
The fashion company of Alia Juma’s showed its newest collection at a workshop in Shanghai. Eighteen
clothing kinds from the collection were made from recycled plastic bottles. “We realized that billions of water
bottles are thrown into oceans every year and it would take hundreds of years to break down. We should use them
to improve the environment,” said Alia Juma, the company’s designer. “Five bottles can make a shirt, 10 a dress,
and 20 a short coat.”
Many other fashion companies are finding similar ways to save our planet these days. The process is rather
simple. First, the plastic bottles are washed and cut into small pieces. Then they are melted(熔化) and shaped into
small balls. Then the balls are melted again to form threads(线). People can then use the threads to make different
kinds of clothes.
According to Juma, it takes 67, 000 bottles to originate 1 ton of threads. This cuts down carbon emissions(碳
排放) by 4.2 tons and water use by 6.2 tons compared with the normal way of making threads.
Some people might have doubts about wearing something made out of plastic bottles. But in fact, clothes
made from plastics can be even better than those made from common materials. Plastic threads can also be made
into different materials, such as cotton, silk, or even wool. It seems that this innovation(创新) may lead to a greener
future of fashion.

China and Western countries may have different cultural beliefs about certain animals, but when it comes to
pigs, we have somehow reached an agreement—that pigs are ugly, lazy, stupid and shameless.
Just look at the idioms (习语) and phrases in our languages. In Chinese, we have the likes of “boiling a dead
pig”, and “a pig looking in the mirror is still a pig”. And in English, there are idioms such as “eating like a pig” and
“sweating like a pig”. None of them are about the good ones.
In fact, science long ago proved that pigs aren’t stupid at all. According to a paper published in 2017 in theInternational Journal of Comparative Psychology, pigs are “mentally and socially similar to dogs and
chimpanzees”. They like to play. They have good long-term memories. And they know the difference between
those who treat them well and those who don’t.
There are lovable pig characters in cartoons, too. Peppa Pig, for example, a UK television series that began in
2004, has now become one of the most popular cartoons in 180 countries and regions. The four members in the
cartoon’s pig family teach children from all around the world about love, friendship and the value of family. And in
China, the adventures of McDull show the story of a piglet who works hard for his dreams. Even though he keeps
failing, he is never defeated.
“People are putting too much focus on efficiency (效率) and immediate results, but McDull is slow and
patient, and not afraid of repeated failures,”said McDull’s creator Brian Tse when she was promoting the film
McDull, Kung Fu Ding Ding Dong in Beijing. “ He has a heart of gold.” Perhaps these are the qualities of pigs to
keep in mind when we think of pigs again—their intelligence, cuteness, patience and innocence (纯真).
68.Which is NOT the common belief that China and Western countries may have about pigs?
A.Ugly. B.Lovely. C.Lazy. D.Stupid.
69.What does the underlined word “them” in the second paragraph refer to?
A.the idioms B.some pigs C.certain cartoons D.all pig characters
70.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Pigs have good short-term memories.
B.McDull puts too much focus on efficiency.
C.Peppa Pig teaches people about love, friendship and the value of family.
D.McDull, Kung Fu Ding Ding Dong is a popular television series that began in 2004.
71.What does the underlined word “defeated” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.succeeded B.beaten C.achieved D.challenged
72.What is the purpose of writing this passage?
A.To introduce two interesting cartoons about pigs.
B.To prove that pigs are ugly, lazy, stupid and shameless.
C.To show pigs can be intelligent, cute , patient and innocent.
D.To share different beliefs about pigs in China and Western countries.

Comics
Do you like to read comic (漫画) books? Even if you have never read an actual comic book, you probably
know some characters from comic books. Do you know Captain America? How about Spiderman? Do you
recognize Thor and Loki? Have you ever watched Superman? 73
A comic book is a book made up of a series of pictures. The art and words are called “comic”, but that doesn’t
always mean “funny”. 74
Rodolphe Topffer was a teacher, but he also developed several comic strips (连载漫画) which were published
in 1827 in different places. These were all drawn carefully by hand. 75 Topffer wrote in horizontal (水平
的) blocks in his own handwriting. This became the standard.
76 Here, artists loved the idea and developed the technique (技巧) of using travel in their comics,
which were always popular. The French also took part in strip comics, while there were still others who stuck to
single comics that were going down the page in the book — instead of horizontal.
Comics started to become popular in the 20th century. 77 Comic strip artists have often used art to
“make fun” of very serious subjects. Even when they were not “making fun”, they used the comics and the
characters to deal with serious topics.
Comic books continue to be popular, but over time, many of their characters have also been pictured in
television shows and in movies.
A.Other artists don’t like comic strips.
B.Sometimes the comics are more serious.
C.Comic strips became popular in France.
D.All of these characters started in comic books.
E.He is considered to be the father of the comic strip.
