Save the Sharks!
Many have heard of shark fin soup. This famous and
(昂贵的)dish
is especially popular in southern China. But do you
(明白;意识到)that
you’re
(kill)a whole shark each time you enjoy a bowl of shark fin soup?
When people catch sharks, they cut
their fins and throw the shark back
into the ocean. This is not only
(残忍的), but also harmful to the
environment.
Passage A
Passage B
Without a fin, a shark can no
(long)swim and slowly dies. Sharks are
at
top of the food chain in the ocean’s ecosystem. If their numbers drop too
low, it will bring
(危险)to all ocean life.
Many believe that sharks can never be
(danger)because they are
the
(strong)in their food chain. But in fact, around 70 million sharks
are
(catch)and traded in this industry every year.
The numbers of some kinds of sharks
(fall)by over 90
percent in the last 20 to 30 years. Environmental
(protect)groups around
the world, such as Wild Aid and the WWF, are teaching the public about “finning”.
They have even asked governments to develop
(法律)to stop the
sale of shark fins. So far, no
(science)studies have shown that shark fins
are good
health, so why eat them ? Help save the sharks!
Rethink, Reuse, Recycle!
Do you often throw away things you don’t need a
? Have you ever thought
about how these things can
(actual)be put to good use ?
Nothing is a waste if you have a
(create)mind. You have probably never
heard of Amy Hayes, but she is a most
(usual)woman. She lives in a house in
the UK that she built herself out of rubbish.
The windows and doors come from old buildings around her town that

The top of the house is an old boat turned upside d

house is made of rocks and old glass bottles.
Amy recently

people don’t wear anymore to make bags. She has been
doing this for a few years now.
She opened a small shop
she sells her bags, and she has also set up a website

“ I plan to write a book
new ways to use old clothes,” she said . “ I hope
people can read my book and enjoy it !”
Wang Tao set up a small business in Shanghai four years ago. He is

using iron and other materials from old cars to make
(beauty)art pieces. Some
are large pieces that look like animals or humans, and some are
(small)pieces
you can put at home. The more popular works can even be seen in art shops around the city.
Wang Tao hopes to set up
“ metal art” theme park to show people the
importance of
(environment)protection. Not only can the art bring happiness
to others,
it also shows that even cold, hard iron can be brought back to life with a
little

Ladies and gentlemen,
Thank you for coming today to
(参加)the graduation ceremony at
No. 3 Junior High School. First of all, I’d like
(congratulate)all the
students
are here today. I remember meeting all of you when you were just
starting Grade 7 at this school. You were all so full of
(能量)and thirsty
for knowledge. And yes, some of you were a little difficult to deal with! But today I see a
room full of
(talent)young adults who are full of hope for the future.
You’ve all grown up so much and I’m so
(pride)of you.
Although you’ve all worked very hard over the last three years, none of you could
have
(succeed)by yourselves. Along the way, I’m sure many people have
helped and
(支持)you. I’d like you to remember to thank all of these
important people in your lives — your parents, your teachers, your classmates and your
friends. Please consider what they’ve done for you and
they mean to you.
Never fail to be
(thank)to the people around you.
Lastly, the end of junior high school is the
(begin)of a new life. I
don’t need to tell you that life in senior high school will be
(hard)and
that you have many difficult tasks ahead of you. You’ll make
(mistake)
along the way, but the key is to learn from your mistakes and never give
. But
along with difficulties, there will also be many
(excite)things waiting for
you. Behind each door you open are
(机会)to learn new things, and you
have the
(能力)to make your own
(choose). Choose
wisely and be
(respond)for your decisions and actions. Although you
have to go your separate ways now, I wish that in a few years’ time, you’ll come back to
visit our school. As you set
on your new journey, you shouldn’t forget
where you came from. The future is yours.
Good luck and hope to see you again soon sometime!
Passage A
Li Meixi, 12, feels worried about her looks—not her face, but her clothes. When she sees
fashionable people on the street, she avoids running into them. “I am afraid that they think I am
out of style. Ashamed of my common ordinary clothes, I feel like I don’t even deserve (值得) to
walk on the same street with them,” said Li, from Chengdu, Sichuan.
What Li is experiencing is fashion worries. It bothers many people today. They are worried
about their clothes, afraid of being seen out of style. A vlogger shared a video about her fashion
anxiety on Sina Weibo and it quickly became a hot topic.
A big reason for fashion worries is fashion bullying ( 霸凌), experts said. As fashion
magazines, advertisements and idols (偶像) show off the “latest and greatest” trends (潮流),
there’s a lot of pressure on people, especially teenagers, to follow them, no matter how expensive
it might be. “The need to belong in groups is very important to young learners and exclusion (偶
像) is something they see as the end of the world,” said Andy Cranham, a teacher at City of Bristol
College, UK.
Another reason some people might have fashion worries is that they don’t have a sense of
self-identity (自我认同), said The Paper. It looks like we feel worried about our clothes, but
actually we are not confident enough. So we care about how fashionable people look at us. We
easily doubt or even blame ourselves. The reality is that those people usually don’t notice us at all.
Fashion trends come and go, always changing. Instead of rushing to follow a trend, the key is
to find your own style. If you’re able to wear something with confidence, you will be the one
starting a trend. More importantly, the clothes are just a part of your image. It can’t tell the true
you. What also matters is your personality and abilities.

Passage B
Succulents (多肉植物) can usually stay wet in hot and dry days. They are easy to plant as
well.
Get the pots (盒) ready. Make sure that you are not using a either too large or too small pot.
There should be three or more holes at the bottom of the pot. Clay pots are the best for planting
succulents. Fill one third of the pot with small stones.
Fill the pot with potting mix. Hold the plant carefully at the center of the pot and place the
potting mix around the plant until it covers it up.
Provide good sunlight. Succulents prefer bright light. So place the pot in an area where there
is plenty of sunlight. The best sun time will be from morning to noon during the summer.
Water your plant. The first watering will be done on the third day of planting. Watering at a
later time will depend on the growth of the plant. A good rule is that the potting mix should be
allowed to dry up before the next watering. It is suggested to water twice a week during the
summer, every two weeks during early and late winter and once a month during the coldest
weather.
Fertilize (施肥) it. Do it during the summer growing season, as you would with other house
plants. Stop fertilizing completely during the winter. The nitrogen content ( 含氨量) of the
fertilizer should always be very low.
1.How should you prepare a pot for a succulent?
A.Try to avoid using a clay pot.
B.Use a pot with at least 3 holes at the bottom.
C.Use a pot that is much larger than the plant.
2.In summer, when is the best time to provide a succulent with sunshine?
A.From 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
B.From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
C.From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
3.How often should you water a succulent during late winter?
A.Every two weeks.
B.Twice a week. C.Once a month.
4.What should you do when you fertilize a succulent?
A.Don’t fertilize it during the winter.
B.Don’t fertilize it like other house plants.
C.Use a fertilizer that is high in nitrogen.
5.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Succulents are easy to plant.
B.You should choose a right pot.
C.Succulents do not like any light.

Li Meixi, 12, feels worried about her looks—not her face, but her clothes. When she sees
fashionable people on the street, she avoids running into them. “I am afraid that they think I am
out of style. Ashamed of my common ordinary clothes, I feel like I don’t even deserve (值得) to
walk on the same street with them,” said Li, from Chengdu, Sichuan.

anxiety on Sina Weibo and it quickly became a hot topic.
1.Li Meixi feels ________ when he saw people in style on the same street.
A.ordinary
B.ashamed
C.worried
2.What is the meaning of the underlined word “bother” in Chinese?
A.困扰

C.影响
3.What is the correct structure of the passage?
A.①②/③④/⑤
B.①/②/③④⑤
C.①②③/④/⑤
4.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.It makes us doubt ourselves that fashionable people always notice us.
B.The pressure on people is from showing off the latest and greatest trends.
C.Some people who are confident enough might have fewer worries about their looks.
5.From the last paragraph, we can learn ________.
A.the fashion trend is easy to follow
B.finding our own style is following the trend
C.the personality and ability is also important to our image

参考答案:
Dear teacher,
Leaving you, I have so many words from my heart to say.
Since you became my English teacher three years ago, you’ve always been working hard. I
won’t forget how interesting your lessons are and how friendly you are. You’re strict with us in
study and also take care of us kindly. We get on well with each other during these years. I still
remember when I failed in an exam, you encouraged me to keep trying. When I had trouble in life,
you told me to be brave.
Because of your help, many students, including me, are more and more interested in English
and have made much progress, too. You have given me so much.
Thank you again for what you’ve done for us! All the best to you!
Yours,
