2024 年中考英语新课标话题综合突破
05-人与社会(三)----历史、社会与文化 (B卷)
一、完形填空
A
The sweetest memory of my childhood is about a round table. When I was still little, my whole family would
get together on 1 every traditional festival to have dinner.
While the grown-ups were 2 something that we were not interested in, we kids would be talking with
each other or playing hide-and-seek under the table.
When I got a little older, my aunt got married and she brought back her 3 . Then my grandma would
cheerfully add another seat to the round table for him. It was a little more crowded (拥挤的), but we all felt
4 to this new family member.
When I was fifteen, my grandma passed away because of cancer. Since then, there has often been a touch of
sadness in our 5 whenever we mention her. But when the big family got together once again, we all
6 that her chair, her bowl and her chopsticks should keep the same, even though her seat was empty. We
felt like that she had never left us.
We all have a table like this in our homes. It is a symbol of getting together with our family members. In fact, in
China, it seems that 7 can’t be solved over a round table. The marriage vows (誓言) between a loving
couple, the mourning (哀悼) for the dead, the talks between business partners can all happen on a round table. And I
start to wonder what this round table is to us, what it has done to us, and its true importance starts to come out in
front of me. The food on the table may change with time, the people sitting beside it may come and go, the reasons
why we come together seem to be different, 8 the true meaning behind it keeps the same year after year.
And that is the tolerance (包容) of different people, different cultures and different art forms. Moreover, we 9
our love, care and respect not only for our family, but also 10 a community, our nation or even the
whole world on the round table.

New kinds of night markets have appeared across the country. Some of the markets have regular (有规律的)

traditional night markets, “You can see pet culture, handmade culture and other popular subcultures (亚文化),” said
Wang Yaqi, who is a student from Hainan University.
Xu Dongjie, a pet shop owner at the market, said that food traffic there was higher than at her pet shop. For her,
being part of the 5 is also a way to network and make friends with pet lovers.
In a night market, people can also have a taste of 6 culture. At a pop-up market held in Haikou, 30
shops recreated the look of streets during the Song Dynasty (960—1279). They put up ancient decorations and
7 the workers wear traditional costumes.

Titles like “taoli” and “kaimo” have rooted (植根于) themselves deeply into ancient Chinese history and
culture. What do they refer to? Have you ever wondered what the stories behind these ideas are?
Modesty and respect
Chinese people in the past or even sometimes today call their sons quanzi (犬子). They believe that dogs are
humble (卑微的) animals. When Chinese parents use quanzi to refer to their sons, they are being modest. Of course,
most parents do have high expectations for their children and want them to be successful. However, they don’t
usually talk about this in front of others. Anyway, they try to play it down. This is similar to how even rich Chinese
people call their big houses hanshe (寒舍), which means “my humble home”.
Although people are modest about themselves, they praise others a lot. They call their own sons quanzi, but
others’ sons linglang (令郎), which is a respectful way to say “your son”.
Trees of character
In Chinese, kaimo (楷模) means “role model”. Both of these Chinese characters have a “木” on their left side.
This means kai and mo might have been two kinds of trees in ancient China, although there are different opinions
about this. According to Duan Chengshi, a botanist (植物学家) who lived during the Tang Dynasty(618 — 907),
there was a kind of tree called kai in southwestern China. It was said that there were many kai trees growing near
Confucius’ tomb (孔子墓). The trunks (树干) of these trees were very straight. Some people thought they were like
Confucius’ character — straight and upright. Legend has it that the mo trees grew near the tomb of the Duke of Zhou
(周公), a statesman (政治家) of the Zhou Dynasty(11th century — 256BC). The color of the mo tree’s leaves was
said to be pure, making the tree a symbol of purity and honesty. Since the kai and mo trees grew near the tombs of
two respected people, kaimo was then used to refer to role models in general, according to Sun Yi, a scholar (学者)
who lived during the Song Dynasty(960 — 1279).
Spreading seeds of education
There is a Chinese idiom taoli mantianxia (桃李满天下), referring to a teacher who has taught so many
students that they spread across the country like peach and plum trees.
The idiom comes from a story about Zizhi (子质),an official who lived in the State of Wei during the Warring
States Period(475 — 221 BC). Zizhi was a knowledgeable person. He opened a private school and started to teach
students.

As a teacher, Zizhi was kind and wise. He never chose students according to their wealth or social positions. He
often pointed at a peach and a plum tree in his yard when asking his students to work hard. “You should become a
useful person to benefit society, just like when the peach and plum trees bloom and produce fruit,” he said.
Keeping these words in their minds, many of Zizhi’s students went on to different places around the country,
achieving great things along the way. They would plant peach and plum trees to show their respect for their teacher.
Since then, “peach and plum trees” has been used to refer to students who have been successful in their post —
study careers.
