A.A song.
B.A band.
C.A concert
【答案】B
W: This is a song by my favorite band.

W: Yeah, but it goes straight to voicemail. They’ve announced our train twice now. Should we just
board without him? I feel like I should have confirmed with him before we left.
M: Don’t worry, Kate. I’ll try his work number. Sometimes, these trains can be unpredictable.
W: True. But it is typical of Tom to be late.
M: Exactly, but he knows this meeting is important. Look, if he misses this one, it’ll be the third

【答案】8.C 9.C 10.B
M: Hi, Breda. Did you go to Mr. Thompson’s lecture yesterday?
W: Of course.
M: What a pity! I missed it. I had a job interview then. How was the speech?
W: Impressive. Mr. Thompson is expert at engaging the audience. First, he told us when he was in
New York, he opened the window of the thirty-fifth-floor apartment, but couldn’t see any star. He
invited us to guess why.
M: That’s engaging.
W: Yes. Then we watched short videos and found out how inappropriate lighting, poor planning,
or even smog and clouds, may cause damage to our city because smog and clouds can reflect the
light.
M: So what can we do to help?
W: The simplest but most effective way, Mr. Thompson said, is to turn off the lights.

W: We’re sending someone now. They should be there in about five minutes.

C.Start a program.
【答案】14.A 15.B 16.C 17.B

M: Fine. I’ve been trying to encourage children in my class to be individuals and think for
themselves.
W: Have you heard about Let Grow program? I’m applying it to my students.
M: What is it?
W: The idea is to help kids develop life skills by allowing them more freedom to make their own
decisions and learn from their experiences.
M: How does it work?
W: The program often includes activities like letting children manage small tasks at home or even
organize their own play dates. Kids learn better through real-life experiences rather than just
structured lessons.
M: So, it’s about stepping back and letting kids explore more on their own?
W: Exactly. By facing small challenges, kids build confidence and develop problem-solving skills.
Studies show that kids who take part in Let Grow program become more capable and better at
dealing with stress.
M: I wonder what the parents think about it.
W: They sometimes feel uncertain, but they often see positive changes once they start trusting
their children more. Oh, the bell is sounding. I have to head out for my next class.

A.Using mind maps.
B.Teaching others.
C.Drawing tables.
【答案】18.C 19.B 20.A
A friend who studies architecture at a good college told me that her math grades are holding
her back. She asked how I managed to pass so many tough exams and graduate even though I
wasn’t fond of medical school. Well, for that, I want to share with you 2 easy steps. Step one:
know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The
smaller rocks will then automatically fill the remaining spaces. Concentrate on the key areas the
exam is testing and don’t stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers,
organize them by topic, and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each. Step two:
practice, practice, and practice. Possessing knowledge is one thing, but being able to apply it in an
exam is another. The ability to recall knowledge is important. One effective study method is
teaching somebody else. I also recommend drawing mind maps, which is my personal favorite.
Additionally, using tables to compare elements helps you remember and hence recall knowledge
better.

Christmas time with kids is filled with warm traditions: Listening to Christmas music while
decorating the tree, going to look at Christmas lights with hot chocolate in hand, and taking the
kids to visit Santa Claus. Well, delete that last one. At least for my family.
Parents think about how fun it will be at first to take their kids to see Santa, or tell them
gifts are on their way from Santa, but this comes with a series of annoying questions about Mr.
Claus like how he makes it to all the houses in one night, as well as the broken trust after revealing
the truth. I didn’t want that.
You may think that our Christmases were rigid, stuffy, and without any warmth or magic. I
don’t think so. Part of that is due to what I taught my kids about Christmas. Instead of telling them
Santa is real, I told them it most likely has its origins in St. Nicholas, a man who was kind and
generous to children in need. Netflix’s 2021 movie “A Boy Called Christmas” is a useful tool for
helping kids connect Christmas myths and traditions with reality while keeping the spirit of
generosity alive.
The month of December is filled with movie and game nights, plays and concerts. These
family traditions have added flavor to my kids’ entire childhood. Hopefully, they know now that
it’s the time with family, doing special things together, that creates the magic and that my love for
them goes well beyond just one day — and that magic, wonder and awe can happen any time with
family, especially if we remain generous and grateful.
My kids are older now, and they’re glad they didn’t believe the myth of Santa. It was one
fewer bad memory for them, one fewer blow to their innocent childhood.
24.What is special for the author’s family’s Christmas time?
A.Appreciating Christmas lights.
B.skipping visiting Santa Claus.
C.Unlocking secrets of Santa Claus.
D.Helping Santa Claus deliver gifts.
25.What does the author want to convey to her kids in paragraph3?
A.Generosity comes from reality.
B.Warmth counts to Christmas.
C.St. Nicholas is an unsung hero.
D.Santa myth will break kids’ trust.
26.What does the author intend to show by mentioning “the magic of Christmas”?
A.To prove that the Santa myth is not necessary for Christmas.
B.To explain why family entertainments are popular in December.
C.To show that Christmas is the most magical festival for families.
D.To stress that shared family time is the core of Christmas’ charm.
27.Which of the following can best describe the author?
A.Rigid but caring.
B.Generous and devoted.
C.Distant but unconventional.
D.Thoughtful and insightful.
【答案】24.B 25.A 26.D 27.D
Christmas time with kids is filled with warm traditions:
Listening to Christmas music while decorating the tree, going to look at Christmas lights with hot
chocolate in hand, and taking the kids to visit Santa Claus. Well, delete that last one. At least for
my family.
You may think that our Christmases were rigid, stuffy, and
without any warmth or magic. I don’t think so. Part of that is due to what I taught my kids about
Christmas. Instead of telling them Santa is real, I told them it most likely has its origins in St.

故选A 项。
Hopefully, they know now that it’s the time with family,
doing special things together, that creates the magic and that my love for them goes well beyond
just one day — and that magic, wonder and awe can happen any time with family, especially if we
remain generous and grateful.
Christmas time with kids is filled with warm
traditions: Listening to Christmas music while decorating the tree, going to look at Christmas
lights with hot chocolate in hand, and taking the kids to visit Santa Claus. Well, delete that last
one. At least for my family.

family, doing special things together, that creates the magic
C
Scientists may have found a new way to diagnose and treat major depression
early, offering hope for better recovery. Researchers from the University of Queensland and the
University of Minnesota studied levels of adenosine triphosphate ( 腺苷三磷酸,ATP), the
molecule that provides energy to cells, in the brains and blood of young people with depression.
Dr. Susannah Tye, a lead researcher, explained that this is the first time such patterns have
been seen in both the brain and blood of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This
suggests that symptoms like extreme tiredness might come from basic changes in how cells use
energy. Fatigue is a common but difficult symptom to treat, and patients often wait years for the
right help. This discovery could lead to earlier and more targeted treatments.
The study involved 18 young adults with MDD. Scientists compared their brain scans and
blood samples with those of healthy individuals. They found something unexpected: cells in
depressed patients produced high energy levels while resting but failed to increase production
when stressed. Dr. Roger Varela noted that cells might be working too hard early in the illness,
leading to future problems. This was surprising because many expected energy production to be
lower in depressed people.
These findings show that mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells, struggle to meet higher
energy demands in early depression. This inability may cause low mood, lack of motivation, and
slower thinking. The research also highlights that depression affects the whole body, not just the
mind. It proves that every patient is different biologically, which explains why treatments work
differently for everyone.
This breakthrough could change how society views depression, reducing shame and
encouraging scientific treatment. By understanding the cellular roots of the illness, doctors may
develop specific therapies to restore energy balance. The study, published inTranslational
Psychiatry, offers a promising path toward improving lives through science.
28. What did the researchers discover about the cells of depressed patients?
A. They produced less energy even when resting.
B. They failed to raise energy levels under stress.
C. They worked normally during high-demand tasks.
D. They showed no difference from healthy cells.
29. Why is the finding about cell energy considered surprising?
A. It contradicts the common belief about low energy.
B. It proves depression is only a mental problem.
C. It shows cells rest too much in depressed people.
D. It suggests fatigue is not a real symptom of MDD.
30. What can be inferred about the future treatment of depression?
A. It will rely entirely on traditional talk therapy.
B. It may become more personalized based on biology.
C. It will focus only on improving sleep patterns.
D. It is unlikely to change in the near future.
31. How might this research affect public opinion on depression?
A. By proving it is caused by personal weakness.
B. By showing it has physical bases in the body.
C. By suggesting it cannot be treated scientifically.
D. By claiming it affects only older adults.
B 29. A 30. B 31. B
They found something unexpected: cells in depressed
patients produced high energy levels while resting but failed to increase production when
stressed." 可知,研究人员发现抑郁患者的细胞在休息时能量水平高,但在受到压力时无法
提高能量产量。选项B "They failed to raise energy levels under stress" 与此相符。选项A 与
This was surprising because many expected energy
production to be lower in depressed people." 可知,这一发现之所以令人惊讶,是因为它与众
人普遍认为的“抑郁症患者能量产生较低”的观点相反。选项A "It contradicts the common
It proves that every patient is different biologically, which
explains why treatments work differently for everyone." 以及第二段提到的 "more targeted
treatments",可以推断未来的治疗将基于患者的生物学特征变得更加个性化。选项B "It
may become more personalized based on biology" 符合推断。选项A、C、D 均无法从文中得
出或与文意相悖。
31.推理判断题。根据文章最后一段 "This breakthrough could change how society views
depression, reducing shame..." 以及第四段 "The research also highlights that depression affects
the whole body, not just the mind." 可知,这项研究通过揭示抑郁症的身体(细胞)基础,有
助于改变公众看法,减少病耻感。选项B "By showing it has physical bases in the body" 正确

harming your heart. A recent study by scientists at McMaster University reveals that fat stored
deep within the abdomen and liver can damage arteries, even in people who look fit on the
outside. This research challenges the traditional use of Body Mass Index (BMI) as the main
measure of obesity and heart risk, suggesting that unseen fat is just as dangerous as visible weight.
Visceral fat, which surrounds internal organs, and hepatic fat, stored in the liver, have long
been linked to diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure. However, their direct effect on
artery health was unclear until now. Using advanced MRI scans on over 33,000 adults from
Canada and the UK, researchers found that higher levels of these hidden fats were closely
connected to the thickening and clogging of carotid arteries in the neck. These arteries supply
blood to the brain, and when they narrow, the risk of stroke and heart attack increases
significantly.
The study emphasizes that this danger exists even without other common risk factors. Russell
de Souza, a lead author, noted that visceral and liver fat contribute to artery damage regardless of
cholesterol levels or blood pressure. The findings serve as a wake-up call for both doctors and the
public to focus on hidden fat rather than just visible weight. The analysis showed that while
visceral fat had a strong link to plaque buildup, liver fat also played a notable role, independent of
lifestyle habits like diet and exercise.
Consequently, experts argue that we must rethink how obesity is measured. Relying solely on
BMI or waist size may miss critical health risks. Imaging tests that reveal internal fat distribution
could provide a more accurate picture of cardiovascular health. For middle-aged individuals,
having a normal weight does not guarantee a healthy heart, as hidden fat can increase disease risk
without obvious physical signs.
As Sonia Anand, a vascular medicine specialist involved in the study, explained, you cannot
tell by looking at someone whether they carry this dangerous fat. It is metabolically active,
causing inflammation and artery damage even in those who are not visibly overweight. Therefore,
assessing obesity and heart risk requires new methods that go beyond appearance, ensuring that
silent threats are detected before they cause serious harm.
32. What does the new study suggest about BMI?
A. It is the most accurate way to measure heart risk.
B. It fails to reflect the danger of hidden internal fat.
C. It should be replaced by waist measurements entirely.
D. It is only useful for people who are visibly overweight.
33. How did the researchers mainly obtain their findings?
A. By interviewing doctors about patient lifestyles.
B. By analyzing data from advanced medical imaging.
C. By conducting experiments on animals in laboratories.
D. By tracking the diet habits of volunteers for years.
34. What can be inferred about people with normal weight?
A. They are completely free from heart disease risks.
B. They definitely have less visceral fat than others.
C. They may still suffer from artery damage silently.
D. They do not need to worry about their liver health.
35. Why do experts call for rethinking obesity assessment?
A. Because current methods ignore metabolically active fat.
B. Because imaging tests are too expensive for most people.
C. Because waist size is no longer related to health issues.
D. Because only visible weight causes inflammation today.
B 33. B 34. C 35. A
This research challenges the traditional use of
Body Mass Index (BMI)... suggesting that unseen fat is just as dangerous as visible weight.”
Using advanced MRI scans on over 33,000 adults...
researchers found that...”
For middle-aged individuals, having a normal weight
does not guarantee a healthy heart, as hidden fat can increase disease risk without obvious
physical signs.”
根据文章最后一段Sonia Anand 的话“It is metabolically active, causing
inflammation and artery damage even in those who are not visibly overweight. That's why it's so
important to rethink how we assess obesity...”
Finding the right balance between screen time and other enriching activities can be difficult,
especially with the appeal of interactive stories. The key is to think of these stories as a way to stir
up new interests. Here are some tips for balancing screen time with interactive story learning.
Setting Clear Boundaries
Just like with any other activity, setting clear boundaries around screen time is essential. A
predictable routine can help your child understand expectations and avoid power struggles.
Consider setting specific times for interactive story sessions, and stick to them. 36
   37
Not all screen time is created equal. Look for interactive stories that are age-appropriate,
educational, and engaging. They can offer a library of personalized stories that are designed to
improve literacy skills and spark imagination.
Making It a Shared Experience
Interactive stories can be a wonderful way to connect with your child. Instead of simply
handing them a device, sit down together and read the story aloud. 38 Ask open-ended
questions to encourage critical thinking.
Extending the Learning Offline
The real magic happens when you extend the learning offline. After reading an interactive
story about animals, visit the zoo or a local farm. After reading a story about space, visit a
planetarium (天文馆) or build a rocket ship together. 39
Modeling Healthy Habits
40 Be mindful of your own screen time habits and model the behavior you want to
see in your child. When you prioritize time for reading and connecting with others, you send a
powerful message that these activities are important.
A.Embracing New Activities
B.Choosing Quality Content
C.You can connect the digital world to the real one.
D.Talk about the characters, the plot, and the themes.
E.Parenting isn’t about perfection, it’s about progress.
F.Children learn by watching the adults in their lives.
G.Visual timers can be a helpful tool for younger children.

“Another A+, and I’ll get you that new game you’ve been wanting,” my mom said with a
smile. It was just the motivation I needed. I was usually a pretty good student, but with that extra
push, I was determined to do well on my next math test. Every evening, I buried myself in my
notes, practicing problems. My confidence grew with every completed practice test.
When the big day arrived, I felt ready. I took a deep breath as I entered the classroom and
tried to keep calm. But despite all the preparation, my nerves got the better of me. Halfway
through the test, I blanked on a formula, and time was running out. I scribbled down the best
answers I could and handed in my paper, hoping for the best.
A week later, I got the test back. My heart sank as I saw the big red “A-” at the top. “No
game,” I thought miserably. It wasn’t a bad grade, but it wasn’t enough. Disappointed, I stared at
the grade, wishing it could magically turn into an “A+”. I could almost hear my mom’s voice, full
of pride, congratulating me on my hard work. The idea gnawed (啃咬) at me until I did something
I never thought I’d do. I changed the “-” into a “+”.
The moment I got home, I handed the test to my mom with a forced smile. She looked at it
and congratulated me, hugging me proudly. Then she turned to walk toward her bedroom. My
heart raced-part excitement, part a sharp twist of guilt I couldn’t ignore. A moment later, she
emerged holding a black box, the logo of the game I’d begged for glinting in the lamplight. “I
picked it up yesterday, just knowing my hardworking kid would pull through,” she said, pressing
the box into my hands. I forced a thank-you, my voice tight.

Later that night, I tossed and turned in bed, lost in reflection. I kept thinking about the test,
wondering whether I should tell Mom the truth. If I told her, I would lose the game. But if I didn’t,
I would be dishonest. I couldn’t sleep. The next morning, I didn’t get up as usual. My mom came
into my room and asked what was wrong. I decided to tell her the truth. As I lay there, the image
of Mom’s proud smile when she saw my “A+” kept flashing before my eyes, making my chest
tight with guilt.
The next morning, I decided to tell her the truth even if it meant losing the game. I told Mom I
failed the test and she left without saying a word. I thought she would be angry, but when she
came back, she said, “I believe you can do better next time.” I was so surprised and I promised to
study hard. I learned that my mom loved me and I should be honest. From that day on, I worked
harder than ever, determined to earn the trust and respect I truly deserved.
