Behind our house is the start of a fascinating trail (小径). This trail is one of the old roads
that wind through untold miles of forest. My 36 , Beans, and I walk the trail frequently.
Normally, Beans sniffs alongside the trail to follow the smell of a deer track or 37 some cause
known only to him.
Beans is a white dog, quite handsome and very 38 . He not only understands what we tell
him, but also often makes sounds as if he were trying to 39 back.
One morning, we took a different route, which led us to an unfamiliar trail. I was sure this trail
would eventually lead us to our familiar 40 . But, no. We seemed to be far off course. After two
hours, I suddenly realized that Beans probably 41 the way home. So I urged, "Beans, take me
home." He ran down a new trail. But it merely led to an intersection (岔道口) of trails.
Soon it became 42 that we were getting nowhere. I began to picture the rest of the day in the
43 , without food or drink. We had walked about ten miles. But Beans seemed totally 44 . The
sniffing and exploring was going well for him.
Finally, we 45 a crossroad near a highway. Lady Luck suggested I should turn left. We did
and 46 reached a cottage beside a field. I knocked on the door and explained my situation to an
old man. He laughed and then drove us home.
Since our adventure, I 47 that Beans probably knew all along how to get home. He was just
having too much fan exploring new trails.

When I first entered university, my aunt, who is an English professor, gave me a new English

dictionary._37___it was a dictionary intended for non—native learners, none of my classmates
had one __38__, to be honest, I found it extremely __39_ to use at first. I would look up words in
the dictionary and _40__ not fully understand the meaning. I was used to the __41__ bilingual
dictionaries, in which the words are _42__ both in English and Chinese. I really wondered why
my aunt __43_ to make things so difficult for me. Now, after studying English at university for
three years, I _44__ that monolingual dictionaries are __45_ in learning a foreign language
As I found out, there is __46_ often no perfect equivalence(对应)between two _47___ in two
language. My aunt even goes so far as to 48___ that a Chinese “equivalent” can never give you
the __49___ meaning of a word in English! ___50_ , she insisted that I read the definition(定义)
of a world in a monolingual dictionary __51___ I wanted to get a better understanding of its
meaning. ____52__, I have come to see what she meant.
Using a monolingual dictionary for learners has helped me in another important way. This
dictionary uses a(n) 53 number of words, around 2, 000, in its definitions. When I read these
definitions, I am 54 exposed to(接触)the basic words and learn how they are used to
explain objects and ideas. 55 this, I can express myself more easily in English.

I met Mrs. Neidl in the ninth grade on a stage-design team for a play and she was one of the
directors. Almost instantly I loved her. She had an Unpleasant voice and a direct way of speaking,
36 she was encouraging and inspiring. For some reason, she was impressed with my work and
me.
Mrs. Neidl would ask me for my 37 . She wanted to know how I thought we should 38

began to respond to her 40 . It was cause and effect: She believed I had opinions, so I began to

I say when the other kids asked what I’d 22 ?” Just when I started to 23 that there would not be

doll. I felt such a sense of 25 that I would no longer have to be embarrassed when I returned to

Years later, when I stood in the kitchen of my new house, thinking how I wanted to make my

So I 31 a plan and gathered forty people from my company to help. We gathered about 125
orphans (孤儿) at the Christmas party. For every child, we wrapped colorful packages filled with
toys, clothes, and school supplies, 32 with a child’s name. We wanted all of them to know they

I used to hate being called upon in class mainly because I didn’t like attention drawn to
myself. And 36 otherwise assigned(指定)a seat by the teacher, I always 37 to sit at the
back of the classroom.
All this 38 after I joined a sports team. It began when a teacher suggested I try out for the
basketball team. At first I thought it was a crazy 39 because I didn’t have a good sense of
balance, nor did I have the 40 to keep pace with the others on the team and they would tease
me. But for the teacher who kept insisting on my “ 41 for it”, I wouldn’t have decided to give a
try.
Getting up the courage to go to the tryouts was only the 42 of it! When I first started 43
the practice sessions, I didn’t even know the rules of the game, much 44 what I was doing.
Sometimes I’d get 45 and take a shot at the wrong direction—which made me feel really
stupid. 46 , I wasn’t the only one “new” at the game, so I decided to 47 on learning the
game, do my best at each practice session, and not be too hard on myself for the things I didn’t
48 “just yet”.
I practiced and practiced. Soon I knew the 49 and the “moves”. Being part of a team was
fun and motivating. Very soon the competitive 50 in me was winning over my lack of
confidence. With time, I learned how to play and made friends in the 51 — friends who
respected my efforts to work hard and be a team player. I never had so much fun!
With my 52 self-confidence comes more praise from teachers and classmates. I have gone
from “53” in the back of the classroom and not wanting to call attention to myself, 54 raising
my hand— even when I sometimes wasn’t and not 100 percent 55 I had the right answer. Now I
have more self-confidence in myself.

One of the easiest things in the world is to become a fault-finder. However, life
第 78 页 / 共 115 页
can be 36 when you are not busy finding fault with it.
Several years ago I 37 a letter from seventeen-year-old Kerry, who described
herself as a world-class fault-finder, almost always 38 by things. People were always
doing things that annoyed her, and 39 was ever good enough. She was highly self-
critical and also found fault with her friends. She became a really 40 person.
Unfortunately, it took a horrible accident to change her 41 Her best friend was
seriously hurt in a car crash. What made it almost 42 to deal with was that the day
before the 43 , Kerry had visited her friend and had spent the whole time criticizing
her 44 of boyfriends, the way she was living, the way she related to her mother, and
various other things she felt she needed to 45 It wasn't until her friend was badly hurt
that Kerry became 46 her habit of finding fault. Very quickly, she learned to
appreciate life rather than to 47 everything so harshly ( 刻薄) . She was able to
transfer her new wisdom to other parts of her 48 as well.
Perhaps most of us aren't as extreme at fault-finding, 49 when we're honest, we
can be sharply 50 of the world. I'm not suggesting you 51 problems, or that you
pretend things are 52 than they are, but simply that you learn to allow things to be as
they are— 53 most of the time, and especially when it's not a really big 54 .
Train yourself to "bite your tongue" , and with a little 55, you'll get really good at
letting things go. And when you do, you'll get back your enthusiasm and love for life.

sick. 38 , the closest supply was over 1,000 miles away, in Anchorage.
How could the medicine get to Nome? The town`s 39 was already full of ice, so it couldn’t come

a relay(接力).
The race began on January 27. The first musher, Shannon, picked up the medicine from the train
at Nenana and rode all night. 46 he handed the medicine to the next musher, Shannon`s face was

On January 31,a musher named Seppala had to 47 a frozen body of water called Norton

The journey my daughter Cathy has had with her swimming is as long as it is beautiful.
Cathy suffered some terrible 16 in her early childhood. After years of regular treatment, she 17
became healthy.
Two years ago, while Cathy was watching the Olympics, a dream came into her sweet little head
—to be a swimmer. Last summer, she wanted to 18 out local swim team. She practiced hard and
finally 19 it. The team practice, 20 was a rough start. She coughed and choked and could hardly

But Cathy woke me up early next morning, wearing her swimsuit 23 to go! I told her she
shouldn’t swim after a whole night’s coughing, but she refused to 24 and insisted she go .
From that day on, Cathy kept swimming and didn’t 25 a single practice. She had a 26
intention within herself to be the best she could be. My ten—year—old was growing and changing
right before my eyes, into this 27 human being with a passion and a mission. There were
moments of 28 of course: often she would be the last swimmer in the race. It was difficult for
Cathy to accept that she wasn’t a 29 ---ever. But that didn’t stop her from trying.
Then came the final awards ceremony at the end of the year. Cathy didn’t expect any award but
was still there to 30 her friends and praise their accomplishments. As the ceremony was nearing
the end, I suddenly heard the head coach 31 , “The highest honor goes to Cathy!” Looking
around, he continued, “Cathy has inspired us with her 32 and enthusiasm. 33 skills and talents
bring great success, the most valuable asset(财富)one can hold is the heart.”
It was the greatest 34 of my daughter’s life. With all she had been 35 in her ten years, this was

her mother said that the man was homeless and hungry. Hannah was very
37
.She couldn't understand why some people had to live their lives without
shelter or enough food. Hannah started to think about how she could
38
,but,of course, there is not a lot one five-year-old can do to solve(解决)the
problem of homelessness.
Later ,when Hannah attended school, she saw another homeless person. It was
a woman,
39
an old shopping trolley(购物车)which was piled with
40
.
It seemed that everything the woman owned was in them. This made Hannah very
sad, and even more
41
to do something. She had been talking to her mother
about the lives of homeless people
42
they first saw the homeless man. Her
mother told her that if she did something to change the problem that made her
sad, she wouldn’ t
43
as bad.
Hannah began to speak out about the homelessness in Manitoba and then in
other provinces. She hoped to 44
her message of hope and awareness. She started
the Ladybug Foudation ,an organization aiming at getting rid of homelessness.
She began to
45
“Big Bosses” lunches, where she would try to persuade
local business leaders to 46
to the cause. She also organized a fundraising(募
捐)drive in “Ladybug Jars” to collect everyone`s spare change during “Make
Change” month. More recently, the foundation began another 47
called
National Red Scarf Day—a day when people donate $20 and wear red scarves in

support of Canada`s 48
and homeless.
There is an emergency shelter in Winnipeg called “ Hannah`s Place”,
something that Hannah is very 49
of. Hannah`s Place is divided into several
areas, providing shelter for people when it is so cold that
50
outdoors can
mean death. In the more than five years since Hannah began her activities, she
has received a lot of 51
.For example, she received the 2007 BRICK Award
recognizing the
52
of young people to change the world. But
53
all
this, Hannah still has the
54
life of a Winnipeg schoolgirl, except that
she pays regular visits to homeless people.
Hannah is one of many examples of young people who are making a 55 in
the world. You can,too!

At my heaviest I weighed 370 pounds. I had a very poor relationship with food:
