Over the last seven years, most states have banned texting by drivers, and public service campaigns have tried a wide range of methods to persuade people to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.

Yet the problem, by just about any measure, appears to be getting worse. Americans are still texting while driving, as well as using social networks and taking photos. Road accidents, which had fallen for years, are now rising sharply.

1. Which of the following best describes the ban on drivers’ texting in the US?

A. Ineffective.B. Unnecessary.C. Inconsistent.D. Unfair.

I’ve been trying out these strategies and I’ve found that when I’m less restrictive, they do make better decisions. “Feeding is a long game,” says Markey. “The food you have available makes a huge difference. Even if they don’t eat it, they’re seeing it. And then all of a sudden it clicks.”

2. What does the author think of the strategies she has been following?

A. Costly.B. Complex.C. Workable.D. Contradictory.

Describing her alarm at its proposed replacement with an expressway, Jane Jacobs called on her mayor to champion “New York as a decent place to live, and not just rush through.”

Similar campaigns occurred in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s as well. Although these campaigns were widespread, the reality is that the majority of the western cities were completely redesigned around the needs of the motor car. The number of cars on roads has been increasing rapidly. In Australia we now have over twenty million cars for just over twenty-six million people, among the highest rate of car ownership in the world.

3. What can be inferred about the campaigns in Australia in the late 1960s and 1970s?

A. They boosted the sales of cars.B. They turned out largely ineffective.

C. They won government support.D. They advocated building new parks.

When Sonja Detrinidad opened her online shop selling houseplants, she didn’t have high hopes for it. But the opposite happened: She was flooded, shipping out 1,200 orders in June of 2020 alone. In the past year, Detrinidad sent out more than 70,000 plants. Her success is just one example of increased time at home leading to an explosion in the houseplant industry.

4. How was Detrinidad’s business when it started?

A. It faced tough competition.B. It suffered a great loss.

C. It got lots of financial support.D. It went surprisingly well.

Port Lympne Reserve, which runs a breeding (繁育) programme, has welcomed the arrival of a rare black rhino calf (犀牛幼崽). When the tiny creature arrived on January 31, she became the 40th black rhino to be born at the reserve. And officials at Port Lympne were delighted with the new arrival, especially as black rhinos are known for being difficult to breed in captivity (圈养).

5. Which of the following best describes the breeding programme?

A. Costly.B. Controversial.C. Successful.D. Ambitious.

My project promotes slow fashion and encourages people to purchase my used and repurposed denim The denim industry is one of the biggest water consumers in our world — there are 2.7 billion people in our world currently facing water scarcity (缺乏). Every year, the denim industry uses over 12 trillion litres of water. This is enough to supply each of those 2.7 billion people with 4 years’ worth of water. Reselling denim, which has already made it through the water-draining production stages, means that with every purchase of secondhand jeans over brand new ones we are saving 10,000 litres of valuable water.

6. What do the figures in paragraph 2 suggest?

A. The popularity of slow fashion.B. Different methods of saving water.

C. The significance of reselling denim.D. Huge profits from selling used jeans.

BMF employees live out sustainability in their everyday lives. About half of them walk or bike to work.

7. What can be concluded about BMF employees?

A. They have a great passion for sports.

B. They are devoted to community service.

C. They are fond of sharing daily experiences.

D. They have a strong environmental awareness.

When John Todd was a child, he loved to explore the woods around his house, observing how nature solved problems. A dirty stream, for example, often became clear after flowing through plants and along rocks where tiny creatures lived. When he got older, John started to wonder if this process could be used to clean up the messes people were making.

After studying agriculture, medicine, and fisheries in college, John went back to observing nature and asking questions. Why can certain plants trap harmful bacteria (细菌)? Which kinds of fish can eat cancer-causing chemicals? With the right combination of animals and plants, he figured, maybe he could clean up waste the way nature did. He decided to build what he would later call an eco-machine.

8. What can we learn about John from the first two paragraphs?

A. He was fond of traveling.B. He enjoyed being alone.

C. He had an inquiring mind.D. He longed to be a doctor.

Turner, a 10th grader at School for Creative and Performing Arts, is a familiar presence on Cincinnati’s stages. He is a star actor of Children’s Theatre, having played leading roles in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and The Wizard of Oz, and is fresh from Jersey Production Ragtime.

McMath is a junior at Beechwood High School. He was in the cast of Tom Sawyer when it was first performed and is a Children’s Theatre regular, with five shows to his credit. This summer he attended Kentucky’s Governor’s School for the Arts in Musical Theatre.

9. What can we learn about the two actors?

A. They study in the same school. B. They worked together in Ragtime.

C. They are experienced on stage. D. They became friends ten years ago.

This hit home for me as I was sitting with my 2-year-old grandson on a sofa over the Spring Festival holiday. I had brought a children’s book to read. It had simple words and colorful pictures — a perfect match for his age.

Picture this: my grandson sitting on my lap as I hold the book in front so he can see the pictures. As I read, he reaches out and pokes (戳) the page with his finger. What’s up with that? He just likes the pictures, I thought. Then I turned the page and continued. He poked the page even harder. I nearly dropped the book. I was confused: Is there something wrong with this kid?

Then I realized what was happening. He was actually a stranger to books. His father frequently amused the boy with a tablet computer which was loaded with colorful pictures that come alive when you poke them. He thought my storybook was like that.

10. Why did the kid poke the storybook?

A. He took it for a tablet computer.B. He disliked the colorful pictures.

C. He was angry with his grandpa.D. He wanted to read it by himself.

Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read? Yes, we all have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed.

Well, there’s a kiosk (小亭) for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least.

11. Why did BART start the kiosk program?

A. To promote the local culture.B. To discourage phone use.

C. To meet passengers’ needs.D. To reduce its running costs.

Martin’s study also found that creating a genderless object was difficult. For instance, if an object’s name was meant to sound genderless, like Miuu, participants would still assign a gender to it — they would assume Miuu was a “he” or “she.”

12. Why is it difficult to create genderless objects?

A. They cannot be mass-produced.B. Naming them is a challenging task.

C. People assume they are unreliable.D. Gender is rooted in people’s minds.

They discovered that the upper and lower front teeth of ancient human adults were aligned, making it hard to produce labiodentals, which are formed by touching the lower lip to the upper teeth. Later, our jaws changed to an overbite structure, making it easier to produce such sounds.

13. Why was it difficult for ancient human adults to produce labiodentals?

A. They had fewer upper teeth than lower teeth.

B. They could not open and close their lips easily.

C. Their jaws were not conveniently structured.

D. Their lower front teeth were not large enough.

A. Ineffective.

C. Workable.

B. They turned out largely ineffective.

D. It went surprisingly well.

解析: "1,200 orders in June“和 "more than 70,000 plants“这两组数据并非单纯陈述事实,其内涵共同指向生意 D. 异常成功这一结论。

C. Successful.

C. The significance of reselling denim.

D. They have a strong environmental awareness.

C. He had an inquiring mind.

C. They are experienced on stage.

A. He took it for a tablet computer.

解析: 文中没有直接说"because he thought it was a tablet"。

C. To meet passengers' needs.

D. Gender is rooted in people's minds.

C. Their jaws were not conveniently structured.

原文中,"making it hard..."
