They spread apart after they were out of the mouth of the harbour and each one headed for the part of the ocean where he hoped to find fish.

老人知道他要驶向很远的地方，于是将陆地的气息抛在身后、开始划桨，感受着清晨纯净的海水气息。The old man knew he was going far out and he left the smell of the land behind and rowed out into the clean early morning smell of the ocean.

有时，那帮热爱大海的人会对它说些不好听的话；而他们的言语中，始终带着一种仿佛大海是一位女性的口吻。Sometimes those who love her say bad things of her but they are always said as though she were a woman.

一些较为年轻的渔夫，那些使用“浮标”作为渔线浮漂、并拥有机动船只的人(这些船只是在捕得大量鲨鱼肝油后购置的)，将大海称为“elmar”，这种称呼带有男性意味。Some of the younger fishermen, those who used buoys as floats for their lines and had motorboats, bought when the shark livers had brought much money, spoke of her as elmar which is masculine.
