必修第一册 UNIT 5 LANGUAGES AROUND THE WORLD Ⅰ.阅读理解 (2024·湖南衡阳市八中模拟预测) Before arriving in China,I had read lots of books about China. Therefore, when I arrived,I was excited to be living in this huge historically and culturally rich country. It was so greatly different from the UK.The food, the landmarks, the big cities and everyday life—I couldn’t wait to explore. However, learning Chinese hadn’t even entered my mind, not because I was lazy, but because I had no confidence to learn the most difficult language in the world.Besides this, once I moved to China,I lived in Shanghai. It is an international city, with many people speaking English as a second language. So I thought English would be adequate. But after a year in China I found many expats(侨民) spoke Chinese.Perhaps it was achievable after all? I felt uncomfortable because so many Chinese people could speak English while I couldn’t even speak the most basic Chinese. To face the challenge,I decided to begin my language journey and my only regret is that I didn’t start earlier. In the two years since starting to learn I have made great progress. Now,I am able to talk in Chinese on many topics.Learning to speak Chinese isn’t as difficult as I once expected. When I speak to Chinese people in Chinese, they almost always understand me.The most challenging thing is listening since Chinese people talk at such a speed.I can’t always understand what’s been said, but my weekly online language exchanges help with this.Learning Chinese has taken a lot of hard work. But there is still a long way to go before I reach my goal of fluency(流利).Learning Chinese not only helps me in day-to-day life , but deepens my cultural understanding of such a great country. So,to all my non-Chinese friends I say this, don’t be afraid, face thechallenge and be confident. 1.What did the writer do after arriving in China? A.He read a lot of books about China. B.He couldn’t wait to study Chinese. C.He tried to learn more about China. D.He missed his life in his home of UK. 2.What does the underlined word “adequate” probably mean? A.Enough. B.Important. C.Necessary. D.Possible. 3.Why does the writer think listening is the most challenging? A.He has a hearing problem. B.Chinese people speak too fast. C.Chinese is the most difficult language. D.He doesn’t know much about many topics. 4.Which is the main idea of the text? A.A new opinion on learning. B.Exploring the joy of learning Chinese. C.The writer’s journey of learning Chinese. D.The value of learning a new language. (2024·山东济宁市三模) Keeping a language alive can strengthen people’s sense of identity and most importantly lead to the preservation of a whole culture. This is probably why a group of Cherokee music artists decided to create a music album (唱片) exclusively in the Cherokee language,a highly endangered Native American language.Currently, there are fewer than 2,000 fluent speakers of the language remaining in the world, and the number is declining every year. The album, titled “DOOAP oaV” and pronounced ‘Ah’ ‘Nuh’ ‘Duh’ ‘Nah’ ‘Lees’ ‘Gi’,means “Performers” in English. It is comprised of a range of contemporary styles, including Pop,Reggae,Country,Heavy Metal,Hip Hop,and Folk. With a planned release date of Labor Day weekend, the record company is using the platform of the National Cherokee Holiday to give this album as much exposure as possible. Jeremy Charles,a key figure in getting this album off the ground, has said that the “music will shine a spotlight on Cherokee artists and speakers , and increase exposure to our culture and language worldwide”.He aims for the album to be an inspiration to the next generation of the Cherokee language learners.Featuring 12 Cherokee artists ranging from ages 14 to 50,you can see how this album is going to do a lot for the promotion of Cherokee music and can inspire people of any age to make music that connects with their heritage (遗产). The youngest contributor on the album,Lillian Charles,is only in 8th grade but had a major contribution to the Goth-pop song “Circus”—a song she wrote at the age of 12.It originally written in English. She worked with translators Bobbie Smith and Kathy Sierra to be able to fully express herself in Cherokee. Projects like the “DOOAP oaV” album bring a modern approach to revitalizing language and culture and encourage a younger audience,to get involved and start learning the Cherokee language. On average,a native language is lost forever every two weeks, and these people want to make sure that the Cherokee language isn’t one of them. 5.What can we learn about the album from paragraph 2? A.It has various musical styles. B.It is titled “Performers” in English. C.It sings high praise of Labor Day. D.It was exposed to the public by chance. 6.What’s Jeremy Charles’s expectation of the album? A.It will make a huge profit for the record company. B.It can help the 12 artists rise to fame overnight. C.It will satisfy the fans’ demand for pop music. D.It can fuel the youth’s interest in the Cherokee language. 7.Which can best replace the underlined word “revitalizing” in the last paragraph?A.Translating. B.Reviewing. C.Restoring. D.Creating. 8.What’s the best title of the text? A.Alarming! The Cherokee Language Is Dying B.Amazing! An 8th Grader Is Releasing an Album C.Bringing Music to Life with Modern Technology D.Preserving a Language Through the Power of Music Ⅱ.完形填空 I still remember my kindergarten teacher Mrs.White.I don’t remember much about what we learned in her class, but my mother once told me that we used to __1__ a lot.I would bring back what I wrote and she would look at it and __2__ many mistakes. But no red __3__.And always a star.Sometimes even a Good! That would fill my heart with __4__.But it __5__ my mother,so one day she asked Mrs.White why she never pointed out my spelling or grammatical errors.Mrs.White explained,“The children are just beginning to get excited about using words.I don’t want to weaken that __6__ with red ink.Spelling and grammar can __7__.The wonder of words won’t.” It __8__ me that if Mrs.White had used her red pen more __9__ I probably wouldn’t be telling you about this now.I look back now and think she must have been a rather __10__ teacher—to exercise such red-pen-restraint(克制);to allow the joy, wonder and excitement of expression—however __11__ the expression is.Because to bloom is better than not to bloom.
