When you are choosing a major in the future, will you place a higher value on its
future career prospects or on its interest to you? Zhong Fangrong, a left-behind girl from
Hunan province who scored 676 points in total on this year's college entrance exam,
preferred the latter as she applied to study archaeology at Peking University.
However, there was a heated debate concerning whether she had made a wise
decision. Some netizens argued that she wouldn't have a promising future unless she chose
a more popular major— for instance, finance, engineering, business, etc.— instead of
archaeology. What's more, considering the financial burden on her family, she had better
think twice before making her final decision.
The girl later responded that she had been inspired to pursue archeology by Fan
Jinshi, former president of Dunhuang Academy, and that she had developed a passion for
history and cultural relics. She also added that she cared little about fame and fortune.
Zhong has increased my confidence because of her attitude towards life. Firstly, she
knows clearly what she is really interested in and is determined to devote herself to it.
Secondly, Zhong has been able to stick to her pursuit despite the criticism from society.
Zhong's pursuit reminds me of a lady who walks on the country road and lives in
poetry—Li Ziqi. They both try their best to be who they want to be, which is rare and
admirable nowadays.
Just ask yourself: Do you have the courage not to follow the pattern that the
majority of people repeat? Actually, applying for an unpopular major may help you to
avoid fierce competition. And the pursuit of a popular major is no guarantee for a
brilliant future.
Following the example of Zhong, I will be more willing to follow my dreams in the
years to come.
4.What made Zhong decide to major in archaeology?
A.Her courage to take an adventure.
B.Her optimistic attitude towards life.
C.Her stubborn belief in popular majors.

A.she preferred finance to archaeology
B.she wouldn't have a promising future
C.she placed a high value on her future career
D.she cared much about fame and fortune
6.What inspires the author to follow his or her dream in the future?
A.Li Ziqi's living in poetry.
B.Netizens' heated argument.
C.Fan Jinshi's encouragement.
D.Zhong's sticking to her pursuit.
7.Which of the following is the best title for the text?

A PhD student in Michigan defended her paper while wearing a skirt made of
rejection letters she received while studying. Caitlin Kirby printed out 17 of her rejection
letters — from scholarships, academic journals, and conferences—then folded each one
into a fan. She connected them in rows, and by the end she designed the item into a
skirt and wore it.
She said that the idea behind her unique clothing item came out of a desire to
normalize rejection and take pride in overcoming it.“The whole process of revisiting
those old letters and making that skirt sort of reminded me that you have to apply to a

lot of things to succeed,”she said. “A natural part of the process is to get rejected
along the way.”
Caitlin's adviser, Julie Libarkin, a professor of earth and environmental science at
Michigan State University, also encourages the acceptance of failure in her students.
Libarkin believes it's important for students to get into the habit of applying for things,
and to get used to the feeling of being rejected, so she encourages them to chase after
any opportunity that comes their way. If a student doesn't get the grant or the spot in the
academic journal, that's okay. They'll still learn something in the process.
As for Caitlin? Her rejections over the years have led to great things: Since her
doctorate, she's won a scholarship to do further research on urban agriculture in Germany.
Currently, she's a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. As
for what the future holds?“I'm prepared to receive a few more rejection letters along the
way,”she joked heartily. “Maybe I'll make a longer skirt.”

A strong coffee after a poor night's sleep is the kick-start many people need in the
morning but new research suggests that it might be best to have a bite to eat first.
A study has found that drinking coffee first can have a negative effect on blood
sugar control—a risk factor for diabetes(糖尿病)and heart disease.
“We know that nearly half of us will wake in the morning and, before doing
anything else, drink coffee—subjectively the more tired we feel, the stronger the coffee,”
said Professor James Betts, at the University of Bath in the UK.
For their study, researchers at the University of Bath got 29 healthy men and women
to take part in three different overnight experiments, with at least a week between them.
In one, the participants had a normal night's sleep, roughly from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m.,
and were asked to consume a sugary drink on waking in the morning. They then
experienced an interrupted night's sleep, where the researchers woke them every hour for
five minutes by sending them text messages to which they had to respond—and upon
waking were given the same sugary drink.
On another night, participants experienced the same sleep interruption, but this time
were first given a strong black coffee 30 minutes before consuming the sugary drink.
They found that one night of interrupted sleep did not worsen the participants' blood
sugar and insulin (胰岛素)responses when compared to the normal night's sleep—although
previous research suggested that losing many hours of sleep or many nights of poor sleep
could have a negative effect. However, strong black coffee consumed before breakfast
actually increased the blood sugar response by around 50%—suggesting that relying on
coffee after a bad night to stop feeling sleepy could limit your body's ability to tolerate
the sugar in your breakfast.
12.What does the underlined word “kick-start” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.A kind of sport. B.A kind of power.
C.A kind of medicine. D.A kind of belief.
13.What was unchanged in the three experiments?
A.The duration of sleep. B.The blood sugar response.
C.The sugary drink. D.The intake of coffee.
14.What increased the participants' blood sugar response most before breakfast?
A.A normal sugary drink.
B.A normal night's sleep.
C.An interrupted night's sleep.
D.A cup of strong black coffee.
15.How did researchers draw the conclusion?
A.By comparing the results.
B.By listing some examples.

C.By surveying the participants.
D.By referring to some documents.

interrupted sleep did not worsen the participants' blood sugar and insulin responses when
compared to the normal night's sleep”可知,研究者是通过对比试验结果得出结论的。故选
A项。
They then experienced an interrupted night's sleep, where the researchers woke
them every hour for five minutes by sending them text messages to which they had to
respond—and upon waking were given the same sugary drink.

How to Choose Your Purpose-Filled Career
When you think about choosing a career, you often do it in the following two ways.
16 . If you like writing or doing crafts, you might consider these things. This is
not a bad way to go, of course, but you can't always make money doing things you like
(like video games or drinking beer). And sometimes things you like are better as hobbies.
Think about a well-paid job that you can do and doesn't sound so bad. Maybe a
doctor, an engineer or a lawyer? Or maybe that's out of your educational reach, so you
choose office or retail worker. 17 but often they are not something you're really
passionate about. It's kind of like just doing something because it's there.
However, there's another way that is perhaps better: 18 . For example, taking care

of children, because you really want to help children get a great start in life, or blossom
into who they want to be or getting into government or social work to improve the
conditions of the community you live in or becoming a scientist to help ease the
environmental crisis or find a cure for a terrible disease. 19 and if you choose one
of them for that purpose, you will feel a sense of purpose each day.
There are endless ways to do that. The point isn't how you serve the world, but just
serving the world in some way will help you feel filled with purpose. 20 .
A.These are all great choices
B.Think about what you like to do
C.You can identify your purpose and work out how to get there
D.Each of these is just one of many possibilities filled with purpose
E.Try to do something to serve a community or make the world better
F.The sooner you complete the training requirements, the sooner you will make a living

fortunate。
be thankful to sb. 对某人表示感激;be thankful for sth.
the。

One possible version:
Dear Jim,
How are you getting along in the UK these days? I am writing to tell you some
good news:your photograph “peach blossom” has won first prize in the photography
exhibition “Spring”! Congratulations!
It was your creative composition and the vivid color that made your photograph stand
out. Moreover, the bird on the branch was especially impressive because it demonstrated
the energetic spring in your hometown and revealed a sense of vigor and hope.
All the photographs are now on display in the school gallery, each capturing a
unique aspect of spring:some present vibrant scenes;some stress new hope and life and
others celebrate true human emotion. What a success!
It is really unfortunate that you can't come to appreciate all the exquisite photographs
in person. To remedy this, I'll attach three pictures to show what the exhibition is like.
All the best.
Yours,

I remember doing the household chores to help my mother when I was nine. I hated
changing the vacuum cleaner (真空吸尘器) bag and picking up things the machine did not
suck up. Twenty years later, in 1978, with this lifelong dislike of the way the machine
worked, I decided to make a bagless one.
Easier said than done, of course. I didn't realize that I would spend the next five
years perfecting my design, a process that resulted in 5,127 different prototypes (样机). By
the time I made my 15th prototype, my third child was born. By 2,627, my wife and I
were really counting our pennies. By 3,727, my wife was giving art lessons for some
extra cash, and we were getting further and further into debt. These were tough times, but
each failure brought me closer to solving the problem.
In the early 1980s, I started trying to get licensing agreements for my technology.
The reality was very different, however. The major vacuum makers had built a business
model based on the profits from bags and filters (滤器). No one would license my idea,
not because it was a bad one, but because it was bad for business. But soon after, the
companies that I had talked with started making machines like mine. I had to fight legal
battles on both sides of the Atlantic to protect the patents on my vacuum cleaner.
I was still in financial difficulties until 1993, when my bank manager personally
persuaded a bank to lend me $1 million. Then I was able to go into production. Within
two years, the Dyson vacuum cleaner became a best-seller in Britain.
Today, I still embrace risk and the potential for failure as part of the process.
Nothing beats the excitement of invention.
4.What drove the author to make a bagless vacuum cleaner?
A.His willingness to help Mom.
B.His curiosity about machines.
C.His trouble in doing family chores.
D.His discontent with existing cleaners.
5.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A.The help from the author's wife.
B.The financial problems of the family.
C.The tough process of the new invention.
D.The procedures of making a bagless cleaner.
6.Why did the companies refuse to license the author's technology?
A.They thought they might suffer loss.
B.They considered it not good enough.
C.They faced legal problems themselves.
D.They had begun making such machines.
7.What lesson may the author learn from the experience?
A.Think twice before acting.
B.Failure is the mother of success.
C.Actions speak louder than words.
D.A good beginning makes a good ending.

The mountains where I live are full of turnings and narrow roads.I was driving down
one of those roads last spring. Days of on and off rain had made the ground muddy.
Suddenly, I saw that the weakened soil had released a tree on the hill by the road.It was
now lying on the middle of the road, blocking the way. I hit the brakes and slowly drove
around it. Then I stopped. I knew it was only a matter of time before someone driving
faster than I would crash into that tree.
I got out of my car and tried to remove the tree but it was much too big and
heavy. I didn't know what to do but I was lucky that day. Thirty seconds later a white
truck appeared and pulled over. Out stepped a bearded young man. “You need a
chainsaw (电锯)?” he asked. I said, “Yes!” And he pulled one out of the back of his
truck. For the next few minutes, he cut the tree into pieces while I carried them across
the road and put them down on the side of the road. “You never know when you will
need a chainsaw,” I joked while my new friend smiled and put the chainsaw back in the
truck. I waved goodbye and watched him drive off before heading back to my own car.
As I drove away, I took pride in what I had done and I thought it was coincidental
for us to meet in just the right spot at just the right time. With some excitement, I knew
that I was able to help prevent an accident and said a joyful “Thank you!” in my

One day when some government officials were rebuilding a barn, they found a mouse
hole in a corner and used smoke to force the mice inside the hole to come out. A while
later they really saw mice running out, one after another. Then, everyone thought that all
the mice had escaped. But just as they began to clean up, they saw two mice squeezing
out at the mouth of the hole. With some efforts, the mice finally got out. However, it
was strange that after they came out of the hole, they did not run away immediately.
Instead, one chased after the other near the mouth of the hole. It seemed that one was
trying to bite the tail of the other.
Everyone was puzzled, so they stepped nearer to take a look. They realized that one
of the mice was blind and could not see anything, and the other was trying to allow the
blind mouse to bite on its tail so that it could pull the blind one with it to escape.
After seeing what happened, everyone was speechless and lost in thought. During the
meal time, the group of people sat down in a circle and started to talk about what
happened to the two mice.
One serious American official said, “I think the relationship between those two mice
was that of king and guard.” The others thought for a while and said, “That was
why!”
A clever Frenchman said, “I think the relationship between those two mice was that
of husband and wife.” Again the others thought for a while, and all felt it made sense .
A Japanese said, “I think the relationship between those two mice was that of
mother and son.” Once again the others thought for a while, and felt this was more

在“It's+时间段+since...”
praise sb. for sth.
what。

One possible version:
Dear Jim,
How is everything going? Since you asked about the Red Cross First Aid Club that
I'm in, let me tell you something about it.
The club was founded last year to promote health education among students. So far,
it has attracted over 100 students who are interested in health-related issues and willing to
lend a hand during emergencies. The members meet every week to take courses or take
part in voluntary services. Recently, we have just received CPR training and learnt how to
use the AED device, which is now available in most public places in China. In fact, the
pictures you saw in my WeChat moments were taken when I was performing CPR on a
dummy.
I have gained a lot from the club. It has taught me some life-saving skills. Moreover,
it provides me with a chance to see the medical professionals work up close, whose
profound knowledge impresses me a lot. On top of that, I learnt that life can be fragile
so we should respect it and cherish every day.
What clubs are you in? Write to me and tell me anything that you find interesting in
your clubs! I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Yours,
Li Hua
