A good thesis statement does two things:
•
It tells reader an essay’s topic
•
It presents the writer’s attitude, opinion, idea or point about that topic.
Study the examples below:
Owning a pet has several important benefits.
Celebrities are often poor role models because of the ways they behave.
B. Writing a thesis
statement

Important tips:
Avoid statements that are too broad.
e.g. Owning a pet is good.
Avoid statements that are too narrow.
e.g. Owning a pet brings you happiness, makes you become more responsible, and
allows you to discover new hobbies.
Make sure statements develop only one idea.
e.g. Celebrities are often poor role models, but athletes are usually good ones.
B. Writing a thesis
statement

An informational outline
Once you have planned the steps that logically support your thesis, you
will be in an excellent position to go on to write an effective essay.
Specific details
Specific details should excite the reader’s interest and serve to explain
writer’s point.
C. Supporting the
thesis with specific
evidence
