Part Two
Guided writing
In guided writing ( 指导性写作) activities, students are sometimes provided with
an outline in words to help them write. Study the example below:
在家学习的烦恼下面这幅画反映了孩子学习时的家庭状态,请你描述这幅画所反映的
问题,并就此发表自己的看法。内容包括以下两点:
1. 不应给孩子施加过大的压力;
2. 家长应该有自己的生活。
注意:
1. 词数100左右;
2. 可适当增加细节,以使行文连贯

This picture shows a child is doing his homework while his parents are just
sitting beside him. They are not allowed to watch TV or talk to each other in order
not to disturb their son.
In my opinion, it is unnecessary for parents to sit with their children while they
are studying. By doing so they are not really helping their children to study, but
rather putting more pressure on them. Furthermore, not only should the children
have the right to live their own life, but also parents should have lives of their own
when their children are studying.
All in all, parents should create a relaxing atmosphere for their children to
study rather than constantly putting heavy burdens on them.

学而思网校
Dear Headmaster,
We have been asked about our opinions on opening iPad classrooms. I am in
favor of this plan for the following reasons.
To begin with, everyone learns differently. Students can customize their iPad
with materials that fit their level and learning style, and thus tailor it to different
needs. Moreover, when connected to the Internet, students can interact with
teachers and classmates about what they learn more conveniently. For the sake of
environmental protection, opening iPad classrooms is a good way to save trees that
we have been cutting down for paper. Most importantly, I believe students will
develop their interests in the subjects by enjoying a new way of learning.
I hope you would take my ideas into consideration and we look forward to
attending an iPad class.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

As Congress and the public wrestle with the Facebook scandal, many people are now realizing the
risks of data collection to them. Facebook recently admitted that nearly all of its 2.2 billion users have
had data scraped ( 篡改) by "ill-natured" people or companies. The firm itself has joined calls for better
privacy ( 隐私) regulations.
For years, watchdogs have been warning about sharing information with data-collecting companies.
Most casual internet users are only now realizing how easy and common it is for irresponsible and
unknown organizations to collect detailed digital data of them. They do this by combining the separate
bits of information consumers have given up to e-tailers, health sites, quiz apps and countless other
digital services.
A study from researchers at the University of Queensland shows that staying off of Facebook for
five days can actually lower levels of the stress in the body. Yet despite the study, and the recent
Delete Facebook movement, Facebook user statistics remain strong.

As scholars of public responsibility and digital media systems, we know that the business of social
media is based on user data and offering it for sale. There's no single way for them to protect data as
many users might expect. Like the social pollution of fake news, bullying ( 欺诈) and junk mail that
Facebook's platform spreads, the company's privacy crisis also results from a power imbalance —
Facebook knows nearly everything about its users, who know little to nothing about it.
It's not enough for people to delete their Facebook accounts. Nor is it likely that anyone will
successfully replace it with a nonprofit alternative centering on privacy and responsibility. Besides, this
problem is not specific just to Facebook! Other companies, including Google and Amazon, also gather
and use extensive personal data, and are locked in a digital arms race that we believe threatens to
destroy privacy altogether.

Home prices remained divergent in China during December, with some of the first-tier cities
recording price drops, while second and third-tier cities saw increases due to the varied market
policies, the National Bureau of Statistics said on Thursday.
Newly built commercial housing prices in the first-tier cities — namely Beijing, Shanghai,
Guangzhou and Shenzhen — remained stable in December, while those in second and third-tier cities
rose by 0.6 percent and 0.5 percent respectively from November 2017.
The same trend was witnessed in second-hand home prices, which dropped slightly by 0.1 percent
in first-tier cities and rose 0.3 percent in both second and third-tier cities in December, said Liu
Jianwei, a senior statistician at the NBS.
In September 2017, the local governments of several regional capitals launched new restrictions to
further slow home sales, in response to the central government's call to end housing speculation and
cool the red-hot housing market in certain cities.
As housing regulations in larger cities have tightened, investors have started looking for
opportunities in medium-sized and small cities, thus causing a noticeable home price increase in third-
tier cities.

Fan Hengshan, deputy secretary-general of the National Development and Reform Commission,
said at an economic forum on Thursday that housing prices in third and fourth-tier cities have risen too
fast, and this needs to be monitored carefully.
"The home price increase in third-tier cities will have a fairly large impact, considering that a large
part of China's gross domestic product and population come from these cities," said Zhang Zhiwei,
chief economist and head of equity strategy for China at Deutsche Bank, during a recent media
briefing.
Zhang estimated that third-tier cities accounted for a major part of Chinese residents' 50 trillion
yuan wealth gains, driven by rising home prices in 2017.
"Despite a relatively large increase in home prices in third-tier cities, studies have found that at the
end of 2017, local residents in 85 third-tier cities need to save four to eight years of their income to buy
a home, meaning that house price to income ratios are not too high in these cities," he said.
