US credit card culture
(A) Cash or charge? For consumers in the United States, the answer is usually charge. Everything from a pack of gum
to a new car can go on a credit card, hopefully to be paid off promptly at the end of the month. From teenagers to the
elderly, everyone seems to have a credit card in the United States. In fact, using one seems as American as apple pie.
(B) The convenience of using a credit card is one of the greatest motivations for using one. Instead of constantly
having to go to a bank or an ATM to withdraw cash, the piece of plastic in your wallet can be used at any time and for
any transaction.
(C) Many credit card companies offer rewards to their customers. Every purchase earns points that can be applied
toward goods, cash back, or airline tickets. As a matter of fact, over 39 percent of millennials choose to use credit cards
simply because of the rewards that they are offered.
(D) A credit card can also be a substitute for a loan for a substantial purchase. Although interest rates are generally
higher than bank loan rates, there is no loan application process, and big-ticket items can be conveniently purchased
with simply the swipe of a card. For this reason, Americans often use credit cards to purchase items like cars, kitchen
appliances and other expensive products.
(E) In the US, having a good credit score is considered an important part of financial culture and can even determine
one’s social standing. Data is collected based on loan payment and overall debt, and an average score is calculated. A
healthy credit history can be built by using a credit card and conscientiously paying the balance in full every month.
(F) Being financially responsible is very important for survival in the US. Indeed, without a good credit score, getting
approved for car loans or even a new cell phone may be nearly impossible.

Punctuation in English writing
Punctuation is used to mark the cadence, pauses, and tone in written English. In
other words, punctuation helps us to understand when to pause between fully
formed ideas when speaking, as well as organize our thoughts in writing. English
punctuation marks include: period. comma, question mark? exclamation mark!
colon: semi colon ;
Writing

Writing
B. Comma
There are a number of different uses for commas in English. Commas are used
to:
• Separate a list of items. This is one of the most common uses of a comma.
Notice that a comma is included before the conjunction "and" which comes
before the final element of a list.
e.g.
I like reading, listening to music, taking long walks, and visiting with my friends.

Writing
B. Comma
• Separate phrases (clauses).
This is especially true after a beginning dependent clause or a long prepositional
phrase.
e.g.
In order to qualify for your certificate, you will need to take the TOEFL exam.

• Separate two independent clauses that are connected by a conjunction such
as 'but’.
e.g.

C. Question
Mark The question mark is used at the end of a question.
e.g.

D. Exclamation Point
The exclamation point is used at the end of a sentence to indicate great surprise.
It is also used for emphasis when making a point. Be careful not to use an
exclamation point too often.
e.g.
That ride was fantastic!

Writing
E. Semicolon
There are two uses for a semicolon:
• To separate two independent clauses. One or both of the clauses are short
and the ideas expressed are usually very similar.
e.g.
He loves studying; he can't get enough of school.
• To separate groups of words that are themselves separated by commas.
e.g.
I took a holiday and played golf, which I love; read a lot, which I needed to do;
and slept late, which I hadn't done for quite a while.

F. Colon
A colon can be used for two purposes:
• To provide additional details and explanation.
e.g.
He had many reasons for joining the club: to get in shape, to make new friends,
to lose some weight, and to get out of the house.
• To introduce a direct quote (a comma can also be used in this situation).
e.g.
He announced to his friends: "I'm getting married!"
Grammar
Part Three
one, it, that
A. We use one instead of a singular countable noun when it is clear
from the context what we are talking about:
“Can I get you a drink?” “It’s okay, I’ve already got one.”
Is this your umbrella? “No, mine’s the big blue one.”
B. We use it when we talk about a particular thing, place, fact,
situation, etc.
I wasn’t expecting them to come. It was a complete surprise.
C. We can use it at the beginning of a sentence to place long or
grammatically complex sentence elements at the end:
It is dangerous to walk in the road.
It’s a miracle that she wasn’t hurt.
D. Sometimes, it is also followed first by an adjective or noun phrase
and then a that-clause or to-infinitive clause:
Officials said that they believe it unlikely that any lasting damage to
the environment has been done.

E. We use that to refer a person or thing that is not near the speaker
or a person or thing that has already been mentioned.
