The results of social isolation
(A) As we head toward the future, technology and modern work habits tend to physically separate us from others. We
spend hours alone, with just our phones and computer screens for company. As complex technology integrates more
widely into our lives, it is vital to remember that social interactions help us thrive as human beings. In fact, our physical
and emotional health can both be affected negatively when we are socially isolated.
(B) Isolation naturally causes negative emotions like worry, fear, and tension. When humans become lonely, stress
hormones are released by the brain. One such stress hormone, cortisol, reduces the overall function of the immune
system. A study conducted in 2014 by Cacioppo and Cacioppo shows a clear link between a lack of social interaction
and physical illness. As stress increases, endorphins and serotonin levels drop. The body interprets these cues as
depression, which worsens our perception of the circumstances in which we find ourselves.
(C) Data has emerged that shows a connection between our diet and the amount of social interaction that we share.
Individuals who do not participate in communication throughout their day are more likely to choose unhealthy foods. Fried
and sugary foods are selected by isolated individuals, a decision that worsens digestion and leads to further health
issues.
(D) The inability to communicate with others on a regular basis can also lead to insomnia, exhaustion, and anxiety. An
article published in 2010 calls social isolation an “unrecognized killer” and reinforces the argument that social isolation
should be treated as a risk factor for shortened lifespans, just like cigarette smoking or obesity.
(E) We find ourselves in uncharted territory, as isolation in the home and workplace increases as never before.
Information regarding the effects on our health continues to emerge. With this in mind, social interaction should be
treated just as importantly as regular exercise and healthy eating.

Dear Editor,
I am writing to talk about my opinions on how to make some changes to the school
English newspaper.
It seems that you have a tough decision to make, but if I were you, I would take
the column of Entertainment off the school newspaper. My reasons are as follows.
First of all, too much entertainment introduced to students may distract them from
their study. Additionally, students can get entertained in so many other ways such as
by watching TV, listening to radio and surfing the Internet, which makes it
unnecessary to keep such a column.
As for what to add to the columns, I am in favor of Readers' Feedback. By having
this column, not only can you know how well the newspaper is received by students,
but also you can get some good advice from them.
I hope these suggestions can be helpful. Thank you for reading!
Yours sincerely,
Cheng Fei

Conclusion
范文2
Dear Editor,
I am very glad to learn the news that some changes are going to be made about
our school English newspaper, and now I am writing to offer you some suggestions.
If one column must be removed from the newspaper, I think Entertainment is
probably the best choice. For one thing, it is of little help to students' life and study.
For another, students are exposed to all forms of entertainment almost every day, so
it's really unnecessary to keep such a column in the school newspaper.
To replace Entertainment, I suggest a column of Career Planning. Personally
speaking, I think students have too little knowledge about how to plan their careers,
which makes a column like this necessary. What's more, Career Planning can
provide some guidance for students so that they may prepare themselves well for
their future.
I'd appreciate it if you could take my suggestions into consideration. Thanks for
reading!
Yours sincerely,
Cheng Fei

The computer keyboard helped kill shorthand — a system of rapid handwriting, and now it's
threatening to finish off handwriting as a whole. When handwritten essays were introduced on the SAT
exams for the class of 2012, just 15% of the most 1.5 million students wrote their answers in cursive
(草写字母). The rest? Block letters.
And those college hopefuls are just the first edge of a wave of US students who no longer get much
handwriting instructions in the primary grades, frequently 10 minutes a day or less. As a result, more
and more students struggle to read and write cursive.
At Keene Mill Elementary School in Springfield, all their poems and stories are typed. Children in
Fairfax County schools are taught keyboarding beginning in kindergarten. Older students who never
mastered handwriting say it doesn't affect their grades.
There are those who say the culture is at a crossing, turning from the written word to the typed one.
If handwriting becomes a lost form of communication, does it matter?
It was at University Virginia that researchers recently discovered a previously unknown poem by
Robert, written in his unique script. Handwritten documents are more valuable to researchers,
historians say, because their authenticity (真实性) can be confirmed. Students also find them more
fascinating.

The loss of handwriting also may be a cognitive (认知的) opportunity missed.
Several academic studies have found that good handwriting skills at a young age can
help children express their thoughts better — a lifelong benefit.
It doesn't take much to teach better handwriting skills. At some schools in Prince
George's County, elementary school students use a program called Handwriting
Without Tears for 15 minutes a day. They learn the correct formation of manuscript
letters through second grade, and cursive letters in third grade.
There are always going to be some kids who struggle with handwriting because of
their particular neurological (神经系统的) writing, learning issues or poor motor skills.
Educators often point to this factor in support of keyboarding.
