From: Jakie Mok , Secretary; Sports Development Committee
Date: May 20, 2010
A week ago, “Sports for Life” programme was sent to the parents, requiring them to select a
sport they wanted their child to play. Since then, our staff have received lots of calls from parents
asking for more information about it . Here is a memo (备忘录) for your reference when you
answer the phones.
Sports 1:Basketball.
We expect that this will be the most popular of the four sports. Therefore, students should be
advised to sign up as soon as possible . Students will take a private bus to and from Kwun Tong
Sports Park .To cover the cost of hiring a bus , each student will have to pay $10 each time.
There will be four basketball courts available for our use with one teacher watching over each
game.
Sports 2:Gym
We will be using St. Peter’s Memorial Park. There are two reasons for choosing this park. Frist,
it is not very busy and crowded before 6:00 pm. Second, it has lot of trees with plenty of shade.
Students must bring along two bottles of water to prevent thirst. Three activities, skipping ,
jogging , outdoor aerobics (有氧运动),all of which are free of charge, will be arranged. And there
will be a teacher on duty for each of the activities.
Sports 3: Hiking
Hiking(远足)will take place at Kowloon Peak. The activity will start at 2:30 pm and finish 90
minutes later. Three teachers will accompany the students, and a hiking instructor will accompany
each group of 15 hikers . Each instructor will cost $75/hr. Students are advised to bring
plenty of water and sunscreen.
 第 1 页 / 共 149 页
Sports 4:Swimming
The Kowloon City Aquatic Centre is a 10-minute walk from our school. Four teachers will go to
the pool and conduct the goings-on from the poolside. We will only be able to reserve the pool for
one hour (i.e. 2:45pm to 3:45pm).Only students skilful at swimming can take up this activity. The
pool will have two lifeguards present. Girls must wear a swimming suit. The cost is $10 per visit.

Sitting on the peaceful coast of Galapagos Islands. Ecuador, watching the sun move
quietly into the sea, you shouldn’t forget that Charles Darwin (1809-1882) arrived here in
1835. He stayed on the islands for five weeks, observing various animals. This finally
inspired (启发) his famous work, On the Origin of Species. You can certainly follow
Darwin’s footsteps and enjoy a trip from four to seven days to the islands.
The islands are certainly a paradise (天堂) for wildlife, as there are no natural killers
on the islands and the number of boats and visitors is under government control. Though
you cannot walk freely as Darwin did about 200 years ago, each day is as impressive as
it could be.
The most well-known animals of the Galapagos is the giant tortoise(巨型海龟), which
can be seen moving slowly around the highlands of Sanra Cruz, the second largest island
in the archipelago(群岛). Some of these creatures are so old that they might have been
seen in their youth by Darwin himself.
Despite strict control over activities and timing, your stay on the Galapagos will be
remembered as a chain of incomparable pictures: diving with sea lions that swim and
 第 14 页 / 共 149 页
play within inches of you; feeling small sharks touch your feet as you swim; and, most
magically, seeing a whale and her baby surface with a great breath of air.
Travelling between the islands and observing the wildlife that so inspired Darwin, you
will feel as though you are getting a special view of an untouched world. At night you
will sleep on board the ship, leaving the wildlife in complete occupation of the islands,
which are as undisturbed now as they have been since the beginning of time.
68. What do we know about Darwin’s visit to the islands?
A. He studied different creatures on the islands
B. He completed his famous book on the islands
C. He was touched by the geography of the islands
D. He was attracted by well-known animals of the islands
69. Which of the following plays a role in making the islands “a paradise for wildlife”?
A. Animals on the islands feed on grass.
B. Local government forbids killing wildlife.
C. People cannot visit the islands as they wish.
D. Tourists are not allowed to touch the animals.
70. Your stay on the islands will be most impressive mainly because of .
A. The beautiful sea views B. Darwin’s inspiring trip
C. a closer view of animals D. various daring activities
71. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Unique Attraction for wildlife Lovers
B. Calapagos as a Paradise for Adventures
C. Charles Darwin as a symbol of Galapagos
D. A successful Example of wildlife protection

Mapping Your World
Different forms of maps are appearing. They allow independent travelers to get local
knowledge of places they are visting, from the official to the unusual. Meanwhile, hi-tech
developments are creating new ways for us to map the world. Here are two of our favorites:
Green Maps
Green Maps allows people to share with the world their knowledge of environmentally
friendly plaees and attractions in the local areas. Users add information with a set of icons (图标),
making it easy to read any map, whatever the nationalities of those who produce it. At present
there are over five hundred map projects being developed in 54 countries. Green Maps’
advertised idea is “think global, map local”. It is a wonderful way of gaining all sorts of
information of a place, ranning from community gardens to good places of birdwatching.
Green Maps is not specifically intended for travelers. Not all of its maps are online, so it may
be necessary for some users to communicate with producers through the Green Maps website.
Maps Mashups
Many people use online maps developed by Google, but not many know about the mashups
of them. Working in a similar way to Green Maps, Maps Mashups allows people to add icons of
their own to exsiting maps to express a certain topic. The mashups is so called because it combines
all the knowledge you could ever need. It ranges from the extremely useful, such as where all the
World. Heritage Site are, to the most bizarre (古怪的),such as where America’s drunkest cities
are. With the mashups added to the basic Google Maps, a multi-layered (多层的) map can be

Passage 1
The Information Highway is the road that links computer users to a large number of on-line
services: the Web, e-mail, and software, to mention just a few. Not long ago, the Information
Highway was a new road, with not many users. Now, everyone seems to want to take a drive, with
over 30 million families connected worldwide. Not surprisingly, this well-traveled highway is
starting to look like a well-traveled highway. Traffic jams can cause many serious problems, forcing
the system to close down for repair. Naturally, accidents will happen on such a crowed road, and
usually victims are some files, gone forever. Then, of course, there’s Mr. Cool, with his new broad-

yourself; he pays for that speeding.
Passage 2

When first entered, Vanak Restaurant does not look like much of a restaurant, but once the

What brings a nation together? Of the four choices — shared values, language, history, and
religion, it’s shared values. In our latest poll (民意调査), seven out of 16 countries chose values as
the greatest factor (因索)bringing a nation together, and six preferred language. Both choices
scored high in the poll, suggesting that our values and how we express them are closely linked Still,
history was not forgotten in some countries, particularly in Mexico and Russia. Even Canada and
the United States chose national histories as the second-most important factor uniting their people.
The biggest surprise? Not one country picked religion as its top choice.

Respect your elders
In most countries, the
oldest
generation

considered
values more important to a
nation than did those who
are under 45 years old.
Do you speak Canadian?
Language scored lower in
Canada than in all other
countries polled, perhaps
because the country

two

official
languages, French and
English.
Church and state
Most people polled do not
connect their religious
beliefs to their national

in 13 countries — with
France scoring it at 1%, the

called ‘Hissing Sid’ is regularly seen lying in the heat of the warm sun.
        Byron’s Pool
Many stories surround Lord Byron’s time as a student of Cambridge University. Arriving in
1805, he wrote a letter complaining that it was a place of “mess and drunkenness”. However, it
seems as though Byron did manage to pass the time pleasantly enough. I’m not just talking about
the pet bear he kept in his rooms. He spent a great deal of time walking in the village.
It is also said that on occasion Byron swam naked by moonlight in the lake, which is now
known as Byron’s Pool. A couple of miles past Grantchester in the south Cambridgeshire
countryside, the pool is surrounded by beautiful circular paths around the fields. The cries of
invisible birds make the trip a lovely experience and on the way home you can drop into the village
for afternoon tea. If you don’t trust me, then perhaps you’ll take it from Virginia Woolf – over a
century after Byron, she reportedly took a trip to swim in the same pool.

The setting: Urban England (the cities), but also rural England (the countryside)
including remote English villages.
The theme: The main theme is a teenage research of self-discovery, in this case the
search for a mother from whom the hero was separated at an early age. Its other
concerns are love, getting on with others, being persistent and courageous and trying to
deal with doubts, troubles and worries. As the book moves to a close, James’ swimming
coach says to him: “You are not like a kid obeying instructions any more. You are
diving like a young man who knows where he is going.”

James’ parents, his diving instructor, best friend, the villagers, people he meets on his
journey, are pictured realistically.
The turning point: The turning point in the story comes while James’ foster parents

clue he has is a fossil, “the snake stone” which she left behind along with a note on
which she had written: “Take good care of Sammie. It was written on a torn envelope
with parts of an address still there.
The journey: Instead of going to London, James decides to find his birth mother.
With help from his geography teacher, James sets out for the remote country village
where his mother might be found. James has painful, challenging, but also humorous and
happy travels. The mother he finally meets, Anne, has a minor yet powerful voice in the
novel. He comes to understand why she left him at a stranger’s door fifteen years
before. Although the meeting is not long, it leaves him with a feeling of completeness.
As a journey of self-discovery The Snake-Stone also provides its readers with a happy
ending. Its hero says, on returning to his foster parents, “I was home.”

A MENTORING (导师制) program is giving life changing opportunities to Banbury youth.
Young Inspirations was founded two years ago to provide mentoring sessions for students and unemployed
young adults aged 11 to 21.
Alex Goldberg, the program's founder, said; "We set up Young Inspirations because we wanted to give young
people experiences which will potentially be life changing and broaden their outlook.
"We try to create work experience opportunities that will really make a difference to our youth. For example,
we've secured internships (实习) with world-famous firms such as Honda.
"At a time of funding cutbacks where schools are finding it more and more difficult to offer this kind of
mentoring, it is extremely important that these opportunities are available both to help youth with their school
work and grades and to give them opportunities which may help shape their futures. " Kieran Hepburn, 14, is
one of a group of Banbury youth who has benefited from the program so far. In October the Banbury School
pupil was accompanied by Young Inspirations staff to Paris where he was an observer at the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization's (UNESCO) International Youth Forum (论坛).
The event was held for young people from around the world, to seek their views on how the future of youth and
education should look. Kieran joined several hundred observers mostly in their 20s and was the only UK school
pupil to attend the event. Kieran thinks the trip was a life changing experience. " Before we left I didn't quite
know what to make of it but when we got there we didn't stop, it was amazing," he said, " We went to three or
four hours of debates each day and then did something cultural each afternoon. "
The main theme of the forum was how youth can drive change in political and public life. It dealt with issues (问
题) such as drug abuse, violence and unemployment.
Kieran said: " It has really helped me to improve my confidence and social skills as well as my school grades and I
was voted most improved pupil at school in August. "
The Young Inspirations mentoring sessions take place each Friday in Banbury. For details visit
www.younginspirations.com.

Recordings of angry bees are enough to send big, tough African elephants running away, a new study
says. Beehives(蜂窝)—either recorded or real—may even prevent elephants from damaging farmers' crops.
In 2002, scientist Lucy King and her team found that elephants avoid certain trees with bees living in them.
Today, Lucy wants to see if African honeybees might discourage elephants from eating crops. But before she
asked farmers to go to the trouble of setting up beehives on their farms, she needed to find out if the bees would
scare elephants away.
Lucy found a wild beehive inside a tree in Northern Kenya and set up a recorder. Then she threw
a stone into the beehive, which burst into life. Lucy and her assistant hid in their car until the angry bees had
 第 61 页 / 共 149 页
calmed down. Next, Lucy searched out elephant families in Samburu National Reserve in Northern Kenya and put
a speaker in a tree close to each family.
From a distance, Lucy switched on the prerecorded sound of angry bees while at the same time recording
the elephants with a video camera. Half the elephant groups left the area within ten seconds. Out of a total of 17
groups, only one group ignored the sound of the angry bees. Lucy reported that all the young elephants
immediately ran to their mothers to hide under them. When Lucy played the sound of a waterfall(瀑布) instead of
the angry bees to many of the same elephant families, the animals were undisturbed. Even after four minutes,
most of the groups stayed in one place.
Lucy is now studying whether the elephants will continue to avoid the sound of angry bees after hearing it
several times. She hasn't tested enough groups yet to know, but her initial(最初的) results were promising enough
to begin trials with farmers. She has now begun placing speakers in the fields to see if elephants are frightened
away.
60.We know from the passage that elephants may be frightened of ________.
A.loud noises B.some crops
C.video cameras D.angry bees
61.As mentioned in the passage, Lucy________.
A.works by herself in Africa
B.needs to test more elephant groups
C.has stopped elephants eating crops
D.has got farmers to set up beehives on their farms
62.Why did Lucy throw a stone into a wild beehive?
A.To record the sound of bees.
B.To make a video of elephants.
C.To see if elephants would run away.
D.To find out more about the behaviour of bees.
63.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Young elephants ignore African honeybees.
B.Waterfalls can make elephants stay in one place.
C.Elephants do not go near trees with bees living in them.
D.Farmers do not allow Lucy to conduct tests in their fields.

London's newest skyscraper(摩天大楼) is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At
a height of almost 310 metres, it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the
appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better.
The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the
Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire (尖顶). He wanted the glass
surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren't regular. So the building has an unusual
shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard.
Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the
spires of the churches of London or the tall masts(桅杆) of the ships that were once on the river Thames.
The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but
eventually there will be a fivestar hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices.
Before building work began, a lot of people didn't want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now
they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like
New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only
thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the
Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.
Other critics don't like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London
is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in
the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol
of the division in society between the very rich and the poor.
The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London
citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.
55. London's newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of ________.
A. its cost B. its size
C. its shape D. its height
56. When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to ________.
A. change London's skyline

A schoolgirl saved her father's life by kicking him in the chest after he suffered a serious allergic(过敏

Izzy, nine, restarted father Colm's heart by stamping (踩) on his chest after he fell down at home and stopped
breathing.
Izzy's mother, Debbie, immediately called 999 but Izzy knew doctors would never arrive in time to save her
father, so decided to use CPR.
However, she quickly discovered her arms weren't strong enough, so she stamped on her father's chest
instead.
Debbie then took over with some more conventional chest compressions(按压) until the ambulance
arrived.
Izzy, who has been given a bravery award by her school, said, “I just kicked him really hard. My mum
taught me CPR but I knew I wasn't strong enough to use hands. I was quite scared. The doctor said I might as well
be a doctor or a nurse. My mum said that Dad was going to hospital with a big footprint on his chest.”
“She's a little star,” said Debbie. “I was really upset but Izzy just took over. I just can't believe what
she did. I really think all children should be taught first aid. Izzy did CPR then the doctor turned up. Colm had to
have more treatment on the way to the hospital and we've got to see an expert.”

Canadian short story writer Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize for Literature. Eighty-two-year-old
Munro is only the 13th woman to win the 112-year-old prize.
Munro didn't publish her first collection of short stories until she was 37 years old, but her stories
have always been well-received. Lots of her stories share similar themes and characters, but each story has its
own twists and turns.
 第 66 页 / 共 149 页
Even though she's won Canada's most famous literary award, the Giller Prize, twice, winning the Nobel
Prize for Literature is the cherry on top of Munro's career. “It brings this incredible recognition, both of her and
her career, and of the dedication to the short story,” said one person.
Along with the well-respected title comes 1.3 million dollars. Munro said everything was “so surprising
and wonderful” and that she was “dazed by all the attention and affection that has been coming my way”.
Munro knew she was in the running—she was named the second-most likely person to win this year's
prize, after Haruki Murakami(村上春树) of Japan—but she never thought that she would win.
Munro's win also represents the long way Canadian writers have come. “When I began writing
there was a very small community of Canadian writers and little attention was paid by the world. Now
Canadian writers are read, admired and respected around the globe,” Munro said on Thursday.
She is technically not the first Canadian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature, but many like to think
that she is. In 1976 Saul Bellow, who was born in Quebec but moved to Chicago when he was still a child, won
the prize. Even though he was born in Canada, he is mostly considered to be an American writer.
“This is a win for us all. Canadians, by our very nature, are not very nationalistic,” said Geoffrey
Taylor. “But things like this suddenly make you want to find a flag.”
She wasn't sure if she would keep writing if she won the prize, saying that it would be “nice to go out
with a bang. But this may change my mind”.
16.What is the feature of Munro's stories?
A.They have their own complicated(复杂的) contents.
B.They have similar story backgrounds.
C.They have specific themes for children.
D.They have the same characters in each book.
17.For Munro, the Nobel Prize is an award for________.
A.her love for Canadian culture
B.her devotion to the short story
C.her special form of writing
D.her career of editing short stories

Recently a study, led by Pedro Hallal of the Federal University, suggests that nearly a third of adults, 31%,
are not getting enough exercise. That rates of exercise have declined is hardly a new discovery. Since the
beginning of the industrial revolution, technology and economic growth have helped to create a world in which
taking exercise is more and more an option rather than a necessity. But only recently has enough good data been
collected from enough places to carry out the sort of analysis Dr Hallal and his colleagues have engaged in.
There are common themes in different places. Unsurprisingly, people in rich countries are less active
than those in poor ones, and old people are less active than young ones. Less obviously, women tend to exercise
less than men—34% are inactive, compared with 28% of men. But there are exceptions. The women of Croatia,
Finland, Iraq and Luxembourg, for example, move more than their male countrymen.
Malta wins the race for the most slothful country, with 72% of adults getting too little exercise, and
Swaziland and Saudi Arabia are in close behind, with 69%. In Bangladesh, just 5% of adults fail to exercise
enough. Surprisingly, six Americans in ten are active enough according to Dr Hallal's study, compared with fewer
than four in ten British.
These high rates of inactivity are worrying. Human beings seem to have evolved(进化) to benefit
from exercise while deliberately avoiding it whenever they can. In a state of nature it would be impossible to live
a life that did not provide enough of it. But that is no longer the case. Actually lack of enough activity these days
has nearly the same effect on life span(寿命) as smoking.
20.We may learn from Paragraph 1 that________.
A.the decline of exercise rates is newly discovered
B.the study suggests 31% of female adults get too little exercise
C.the good enough data has been collected from only one country
D.the industrial revolution has changed the way people live to some degree

WASHINGTON—Patients with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, often develop vitamin deficiencies(缺乏).
A new study has found that giving these patients a multivitamin with a mineral supplement(补充) helps to fight
the disease and slows the disease's progression.
Sub-Saharan Africa has always been the centre of the AIDS. In Botswana, despite aggressive prevention
campaigns, one out of every four adults is infected with HIV. Professor Marianna Baum based her latest research
there.
Baum recruited almost 900 newly infected adults who had not yet received the anti-AIDS drugs that
target the virus.
 第 70 页 / 共 149 页
These adults were then divided into groups that randomly received different combinations of
vitamins B, C and E, the mineral selenium(硒) or a placebo(安慰剂).
Most patients with HIV become deficient in these vitamins, which help improve immunity(免疫). Baum
said she initially thought the multivitamins alone or selenium alone would be effective in strengthening the
immune system, but found that incorrect.
“We were surprised to find that only the combination was effective,” said Baum.
Research shows that when people with HIV receive anti-retroviral drugs (抗逆转录病毒药物) shortly
after infection, they can remain healthy and are less likely to pass the virus to others. For many countries,
however, the cost of these anti-AIDS drugs is still prohibitive.
Baum said the vitamin and mineral combination treatment should help low-income countries better
control the virus.
“A simple multivitamin supplementation with selenium provided early in HIV disease can actually
slow the HIV disease progression and it is safe. It is low cost and it should be provided very early in HIV
infection,” said Baum.
Baum said the supplements are not meant to replace anti-retroviral therapy, but can help those who
cannot obtain the drugs.
Dr Anthony Fauci, a world-famous expert on AIDS, disagreed.
“I haven't read the paper, but having taken care of HIV-infected individuals for three decades, I would
doubt that vitamins are going to have a major effect on stopping the virus,” said Fauci.
Fauci said vitamin and mineral supplements may make a patient generally healthier, but the only thing that
truly works to stop HIV is anti-retroviral treatment.
Baum's study was published in The Journal of the American Medical Association.
1.Where is the passage probably taken?
A.A scientific report.
B.A newspaper.
C.A school textbook.
D.A science fiction.
2.What can we learn from professor Baum's study?
A.It is vitamin deficiencies that may have caused people to develop AIDS.
B. More than one third people in Botswana are diagnosed with HIV disease.
C. Professor Baum divided 900 HIV patients randomly into several groups.
 第 71 页 / 共 149 页
D. Only the combination of vitamin and mineral could slow AIDS' process.
3.Which of the statements is possibly supported by Dr Anthony Fauci?
A.The finding is great news for low-income patients.
B. Vitamins will have a great impact on stopping HIV.
C. Anti-retroviral treatment is effective to stop HIV.
D. Vitamins should be used early in HIV infection.
4.The underlined word “prohibitive” in Paragraph 7 is closest to “________” in meaning.

Do you enjoy seeing the stars twinkling at night? Or do you love the ocean and sea, diving and racing
with lovely dolphins? With heavy burdens on their shoulders, teenagers find it hard to pull out. Even if they are
free, they prefer to occupy themselves with computer games or watching TV. How to get children away from
screens is a great concern for parents. Now there is some good news for those concerned parents and teachers.
A campaign is being launched to encourage children to surrender 30 minutes of screen time a day to head
for the great outdoors.
The newly formed Wild Network, a collaboration of nearly 400 organizations, is attempting to attract
youngsters away from television and computer screens and into fields, woods and parks.
Organizers say it is the UK's biggest ever campaign to reconnect children with nature and outdoor
play, and claim it could help improve fitness, mental alertness and general well-being.
A documentary film, Project Wild Thing, will herald the launch at more than 50 cinemas across the UK
from Friday. It looks at the increasingly fragile link between children and nature.
Members of the network include the National Trust, RSPB, Play England and the NHS Sustainable
Development Unit.
Andy Simpson, chairman of Wild Network, said, “The tragic truth is that kids have lost touch with nature
and the outdoors in just one generation.”Time spent outdoors is down, roaming ranges have fallen drastically,
activity levels are declining and the ability to identify common species has been lost.
Suggestions of how to get more time in nature include collecting conkers(七叶树果实), camping,
snail racing, and observing autumn colours on trees.

This is not the first time the message of fewer screens, more play has been brought up. Children in the
1980s were entreated to do the same by the BBC TV series Why Don't You, which somewhat confusingly called
on its viewers to “switch off your TV set, and go to do something less boring instead”.
5.What is the main purpose of the campaign in the UK?
A.To save 30 minutes for watching TV programmes each day.
B.To encourage children to play outdoors.
C.To see the documentary film Project Wild Thing.
D.To teach students how to learn more efficiently in schools.
6.According to the organizers of Wild Network, there will be many advantages from the campaign
EXCEPT ________.
A.improving health conditions
B.keeping touch with nature
C.learning more about wildlife
D.teaching children how to make full use of their spare time
7.The underlined part “to get children muddy and bright-eyed” in Paragraph 9 means “________
”.
A.to make children covered with mud
B.to urge politicians to do more things for children
C.to encourage children to take part in outdoor activities
D.to help children identify common species
8.Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A.A new campaign
B.Fewer screens, more play outdoors
C.A newly formed Wild Network

“These patients deserve a chance at a normal, happy future and they rely on the kindness of strangers to
make that happen.”
—Daisy, Isabelle's Mother
Isabelle is the daughter of Daisy and Saman Mirzaei. In January 2008 Isabelle was diagnosed(诊断)
with a genetic blood disorder, beta thalassemia. Isabelle's body is unable to produce healthy red blood cells. As a
result, Isabelle has been receiving blood transfusions(输血) every 4~6 weeks since she was 11 months old. A
lifetime of regular transfusions can lead to serious medical problems. Her only chance at a normal, healthy life is
to have a marrow transplant. Isabelle is an only child, so doctors have started a search for an unrelated marrow
donor through the Be The Match Registry. The Mirzaei family asks that you consider helping patients like
Isabelle by registering to be a marrow donor and give the gift of life, the gift of blood.

You've flown halfway around the world; you've sniffed out this place that nobody in Falongland or
Thailand seems to have ever heard of; so what on earth is there to do here? You consider this question as you sink
into an old wooden beach chair that holds you above the sand.
It was a long journey from Bangkok to Huaplee. By the time you found the bus station and got
yourself sorted out, it took almost as long as the flight from Falongland.
Huaplee is located just south of Hua Hin, about two hundred kilometres from Bangkok, down the west
side of the Gulf of Thailand. Not many tourists find this place, and the ones that do wonder if finding it has been
their purpose all along.
There's an apparent laziness that surrounds you here. It's what this place offers, and it's free of charge.
The small waves that tap the shoreline seem to slow everything down. You settle into your beach chair in
preparation for a long rest. You sit there and watch the sea.
It's early afternoon, so the cook comes out and asks what you'd like to eat this evening. Before long he's
rushed off to the market to buy the ingredients for whatever it was that you ordered—every meal fresh and to
order. No menu here.
There is no poolside noise here but just that wonderfully warm, clear blue sea. There's no street noise.
The only sounds are the murmurs of nature.
For now you just count your blessings(福祉), listing them in the sand with your toe(脚趾). You don't
have to worry about being late for work. You don't have to do anything.
 第 78 页 / 共 149 页
The beach to your right stretches off to the horizon(地平线), slowly narrowing to nothingness only to re
emerge again on your left, now steadily widening until it covers the chair beneath you. Sand to your left and sand
to your right; it's unbroken, endless. No start, no end, just sand, sun, and peace. Step off it, and you reenter the
world of traffic, stress, work, and hurry.
Normally you're the type who can't sit still for more than ten minutes, but you're on Huaplee Lazy
Beach now and, in the right frame of mind, it stretches all the way around the world.
“How could it take me so long to find it?” you wonder.
63. When the author first went to Huaplee Beach, ________.
A. he found it unworthwhile
B. he failed to sort himself out
C. he became sensitive to smell

64. What is special about the food service at Huaplee Beach?
A. No menu. B. Free food.
C. Self service. D. Quick delivery.
65. In the author's opinion, a tourist can enjoy Huaplee Beach most when he ________.
A. sits in a beach chair
B. forgets his daily routine
C. plans a detailed schedule
D. draws pictures in the sand
66. What does the author imply by his question at the end of the passage?
A. He shouldn't have counted his blessings.
B. He should have understood the wonder of nature.
C. He shouldn't have spent so much time on the trip.
D. He should have come to the place earlier.

Never before had a kitchen

It tells of Freedom, Success, and of the Architecture of big American cities. Because that is where it started:
in the second half of the 19th century!

Welcome to a new Era of Kitchen Interior Design
Back then, a Generation of successful American Entrepreneurs dreamt of a new style of Architecture to
express their personal wealth. This dream was realized by young architects such as Daniel Burnham and Stanford
White. They
all had studied at the E'cole des BeauxArts in Paris. And they created a new style for Architecture and
Interior Design, named after the famous French Art Institute: BeauxArts.
SieMatic BeauxArts breaks and creates
In fact it was not a new style at all, but a composition of styles from different periods and cultures. Many
worldfamous structures such as the Chicago Art Institute and the Statue of Liberty account for it. But what does
that have to do with your kitchen? Just as much as you want it to. Because in the same way that the anti
conventional architects back then took the freedom to combine elements from different historical eras, today, you
too can break the conventional rules of style and create something new: your own personal composition of your
kitchen. For that, SieMatic BeauxArts offers unique opportunities: A broad range of seemingly conflicting
features that you combine to a harmonious design of your own. You can choose from menu of various forms,
appealing colours, and precious materials, to create an environment that is much more than just a kitchen: a
reflection of your personality.
56.Why did the BeauxArts style attract American Entrepreneurs?
A.It helped display their money status.
B.It was created by famous architects.
C.It was named after a famous institute.
D.It represented the 19th century urban culture.
57.What is unique of SieMatic BeauxArts?
A.Its designs are anticonventional.
B.Its designs come from famous structures.
C.Its customers can enjoy their own composition.
D.Its customers can choose from various new styles.

August 1990, Boston
Dear Maya Shaoming,
 第 82 页 / 共 149 页
To me, June 6,1990 is a special day. My longawaited dream came true the minute your father cried, “A
girl!” You are more than just a second child, more than just a girl to match our boy. You, little daughter, are
the link to our female line, the legacy of another woman's pain and sacrifice 31 years ago.
Let me tell you about your Chinese grandmother. Somewhere in Hong Kong, in the late fifties, a
young waitress found herself pregnant(怀孕) by a cook, probably a coworker at her restaurant. She carried the
baby to term, suffered to give it birth, and kept the little girl for the first three months of her life. I like to think
that my mother—your grandmother—loved me and fought to raise me on her own, but that the daily struggle was
too hard. Worn down by the demands of the new baby and perhaps the constant threat of starvation, she made the
painful decision to give away her girl so that both of us might have a chance for a better life.
More likely, I was dropped at the orphanage(孤儿院) steps or somewhere else. I will probably never know
the truth. Having a baby in her unmarried state would have brought shame on the family in China, so she probably
kept my existence a secret. Once I was out of her life, it was as if I had never been born. And so you and your
brother and I are the missing leaves on a family tree.
Do they ever wonder if we exist?
Before I was two, I was adopted by an Anglo couple. Fed three square meals a day, I grew like a wild
weed and grasped all the opportunities they had to offer—books, music, education, church life and community
activities. In a family of blueeyed blonds, though, I_stood_out_like_a_sore_thumb. Whether from jealousy or fear
of someone who looked so different, my older brothers sometimes teased me about my unpleasing skin, or made
fun of my clumsy walk. Moody and impatient, burdened by fears that none of us realized resulted from my
early years of need, I was not an easy child to love. My mother and I conflicted countless times over the years,
but gradually came to see one another as real human beings with faults and talents, and as women of strength in
our own right. Lacking a mirror image in the mother who raised me, I had to seek my identity as a woman on my
own. The Asian American community has helped me regain my double identity.
But part of me will always be missing: my beginnings, my personal history, all the delicate details that
give a person her origin. Nevertheless, someone gave me a lucky name “Siu Wai”. “Siu” means “little”, and
“Wai” means “clever”. Therefore, my baby name was “Clever little one”. Who chose those words? Who cared
enough to note my arrival in the world?
I lost my Chinese name for 18 years. It was Americanized for convenience to “Sue”. But like an
illfitting coat, it made me uncomfortable. I hated the name. But even more, I hated being Chinese. It took many
years to become proud of my Asian origin and work up the courage to take back my birthname. That, plus a little
 第 83 页 / 共 149 页
knowledge of classroom Cantonese, is all the Chinese culture I have to offer you. Not white, certainly, but not
really Asian, I try to pave the way between the two worlds and bridge the gap for you. Your name, “Shaoming”,
is very much like mine—“Shao” means “little”. And “ming” is “bright”, as in a shining sun or moon. Whose
lives will you brighten, little Maya? Your_past_is_more_complete_than_mine,_and each day I cradle you in your
babyhood, generously giving you the loving care I lacked for my first two years. When I pat you, I comfort the
lost baby inside me who still cries for her mother.
Sweet Maya, it doesn't matter what you “become” later on. You have already fulfilled my wildest
dreams.
I love you,
Mummy

(Q=Question;A=Answer)
Situation Ⅰ
Q:If someone sits right next to me in an empty movie theatre,is it rude to move?
A:Maybe, but nobody will fault you for it.Chances are that the close sitter doesn't realize he disturbs
you,so he may miss your annoyance. You undoubtedly aren't the first person he's met who needs enough
room.Forgive his bad judgement, move quietly and enjoy the show.
Situation Ⅱ
Q:If I use the bathroom at a store,do I need to buy something?
A:Consider frequency and urgency. Is this a onetime thing or an emergency? If so,you don't have to buy
anything, but it would be kind if you did. However,if you regularly use the bathroom at this place, then you
are a customer, and you should act like one.
Situation Ⅲ

There have always been a lot of commonly believed but false ideas about being fat and doing
exercise. Some people believe that they can't help putting on weight as they get older, while others hold
that if they stop exercising, their muscles will turn into fat. Here are some more myths:
I’ll never lose weight—I come from a fat family
 第 91 页 / 共 149 页
Wrong! While we can't change the body type we are born with, we can't blame our genes for making us fat.
There's plenty of evidence that fatness runs in families, and the main reason is that they share the same habits of
eating too much and exercising too little.
I am fat because I burn calories slowly
Wrong! Fatness is not caused by a slow metabolism(新陈代谢). In fact, although fat people consume more
energy than slim people, they also fail to realize how much they eat! Keeping a diary can help you work out your
daily food intake more accurately.
Exercise is boring
Wrong! Anything will become boring if you do it repetitively. The key is to develop a balanced and varied
programme that's fun as well as progressive. If you enjoy a Sunday walk, take a different route. If you do yoga, try
a tai chi class. If you like swimming, set yourself a distance or time challenge.
No pain, no gain
Wrong! Exercise is not meant to hurt. Indeed, pain is your body telling you something's wrong, and
continuing to exercise could lead to serious injury. You may experience mild discomfort as you begin to exercise
regularly, but this is your body adapting to the positive changes in your lifestyle and the aches should disappear
relatively quickly. If they don't, rest and seek medical advice.
40. What does the author think about being fat?
A. It is the family genes that make people fat.
B. People are fat because they consume too little energy.
C. A diary of exercise can prevent people from becoming fat.
D. It is the consequence of people's unbalanced lifestyle.
41. According to the author, how can we make exercise more interesting?
A. By taking varied exercise.
B. By choosing simple exercise.
C. By doing regular exercise.
D. By sticking to outdoor exercise.
42. What is the author's opinion about “No pain, no gain” in exercising?
A. Keeping fit is essentially a painful experience.
B. Exercise should be stopped if continuous pain is felt.
C. Pain in exercise is a precondition for reaching your goal.
D. Getting used to pain leads to positive changes in your body.
 第 92 页 / 共 149 页
43. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To declare the importance of keeping fit.
B. To clarify some misconceptions about fatness and exercise.
C. To confirm what has long been believed about keeping fit.
D. To explain some medical facts about being fat and doing exercise.

Dear Gregory,
Merry Christmas! You are now the proud owner of an iPhone. You are a good and responsible 13-year-
old boy and you deserve this gift. But with your acceptance of this present come some rules and regulations.
Please read through the following list of rules. I hope that you understand that it is my job to form you into a well
-rounded, healthy young man who can coexist with technology without being ruled by it. Failure to comply(遵
守) with the following list will result in termination(终止) of your iPhone ownership.
1.It is my phone. I bought it. I paid for it. I am loaning(借) it to you. Aren't I the greatest?

2.If it rings, answer it. It is a phone. Say hello and use your manners. Do not ever ignore a phone call if
the screen reads “Mum” and “Dad”.

important life skill. But half days, field trips and after school activities will require special consideration.
4.If it falls into the toilet, breaks up on the ground or disappears into thin air, you are responsible for the
replacement or repair costs. Mow lawns, take up babysitting or save up your birthday money. Accidents will
happen, so you should be prepared.
5.Turn it off, silence it and put it away in public—especially in a restaurant, at the movies or while
speaking with another human being. You are not a rude person. Do not allow your new toy to change that.
6.Live within your experiences. They will be stored in your memory forever. Don't take too many
pictures and videos. There is no need to document everything.
7.Learn to live without it. Be bigger and more powerful than your “FOMO”—fear of missing
out.Leave your phone at home sometimes and feel safe and secure in that decision. It is not alive, nor is it an
extension of your body.
8.Keep your eyes up. See the world happening around you. Stare out a window. Listen to the
birds. Take a walk. Wonder without Googling.
9.If you mess up,I will take away your phone. We will sit down and talk about it. We will start over
again. You and I,we are always learning. I am on your side and we are in this together.
Love,
Mum

students to read more and to read good literature.Students of different abilities can use this programme. It is not a

shows the correct answers for missed questions, and praises the students' efforts with an on-screen personalized
message.Passing the quiz assures the teacher and the parents that the child actually read and understood the
book. Each student tests independently—reading the quiz questions himself/herself.
The computer keeps track of reading points, books, and average test scores, as well as other data.A
student may test on a book only once and should, therefore, have thoroughly read and understood the contents
before taking the quiz. Each student is responsible for reading the screen to be sure that the quiz, by title and

Dear Michelle,
My dad hates my mum. He tells me that she is a liar and that I should not trust her. Of course,
they are divorced but they have “joint custody” (共同监护). What a joke! I am 15, my brother is nine, and we
have a life of hell, frankly.
We live one week on and one week off. This was the brilliant idea of both of my parents, which was fair to
them but ruining my life. I cannot get away from his voice and his putting my mum down. Sometimes I think
about running away.
A Hopeless Ant
Dear Hopeless Ant,
 第 97 页 / 共 149 页
First, thank you for trusting me with your problem. If all you said is correct, then there are several things that
you can and should do to help yourself, your brother and your parents.
You need a family counsellor(指导老师). Such a person could listen to each family member alone and
then meet together to talk about the situation.
If refused, you need to talk to a counsellor in your school. You need to be heard, and you need an adult who
will listen. A school counsellor can organize a meeting with your parents.
Perhaps you need to write to your mother. Writing things down allows people to go over them
more than once.
I cannot imagine that she will stand passively by and do nothing at all to help once she reads how
you feel. Your father needs a letter as well. He may not realize the destructive effect that it has on his
children.
Lastly, have a plan in mind when all else fails that is not self-destructive. Life passes very quickly, and you
will grow up and have your own life.
Until then, you need to keep yourself safe. Never doubt that it will get better. Write back and let me know
how everything is going.
Michelle

A.She will pretend to know nothing at all.

There are many places to go on safari(观赏野生动物)in Africa, but riding a horse through
the flooded waters of Botswana's Okavango Delta must rank as one of the world's most exciting
wildlife journeys.
Several safari camps operate as the base for this adventure, providing unique rides twice a day
to explore deep into the delta. The camps have excellent horses, professional guides and lots of
support workers. They have a reputation for providing a great riding experience.
The morning ride, when the guides take you to beautiful, shallow lakes full of water lilies, tends
to be more active. It is unlike any other riding experience. With rainbows forming in the splashing
water around you and the sound of huge drops of water bouncing off your body and face. It is truly
exciting. You are very likely to come across large wild animals, too. On horseback it is possible to
get quite close to elephants, giraffes and many other animals. The sense of excitement and tension
levels rise suddenly though, as does your heart rate, as you move closer to them.
In the evening, rides are usually at a more relaxed and unhurried pace. With golden light
streaming across the grassy delta and the animals coming out to eat and drink. Sedate though they
 第 104 页 / 共 149 页
are, rides at this time of day are still very impressive. As the sun's rays pass through the dust kicked
up by the horses, the romance of Africa comes to life.
Back at the camp you can kick off your boots and enjoy excellent food and wine. Looking back
on your day, you will find it hard to deny that a horseback Safari is as close as you will ever come
to answering the call of the wild.

The Curse of the Were-Rabbit(2005) is the first full-length
feature film made by directors Nick Park and Steve Box with
their amazing plasticine(粘土) characters Wallace and Gromit. It
won an Oscar in 2006, and if you watch it, you’ll understand
why. It’s an absolutely brilliant cartoon comedy.
Cheese-loving inventor Wallace and his brainy dog Gromit
have started a company to protect the town’s vegetables from
hungry rabbits. However, just before the annual Giant Vegetable
Competition, an enormous rabbit begins terrorising the town. It
is attacking all the vegetables and destroying everything in its
path. The competition organizer, Lady Tottington, hires Wallace
and Gromit to catch the monster alive. But they will have to
find the were-rabbit before gun-crazy hunter Victor
Quartermaine who is desperate to kill it.
The screenplay is witty and full of amusing visual jokes. As
usual, the voice of Peter Sallis is absolutely perfect for the role
of Wallace, and Gromit is so beautifully brought to life, he can
express a huge range of emotions without saying a word. And
both Helena Bonham-Carter, who plays the part of Lady
Tottington, and Ralph Fiennes as Victor are really funny.
To sum up, The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is an amazing film
which is suitable for both children and adults. If you liked
Wallace and Gromit’s previous adventures and you appreciate
the British sense of humour, you’ll love this film. Don’t miss it!

Suppose you’re in a rush, feeling tired, not paying attention to your screen,
and you send an email that could get you in trouble.
Realisation will probably set in seconds after you’ve clicked “send”. You
freeze in horrors and burn with shame.
What to do? Here are four common email accidents, and how to recover.
Clicking “send” too soon
Don’t waste your time trying to find out if the receivers has read it yet.
Write another email as swiftly as you can and send it with a brief explaining
that this is the correct version and the previous version should be ignored.
Writing the wrong time
The sooner you notice, the better. Respond quickly and briefly, apologizing
for your mistake. Keep the tone measured: don’t handle it too lightly, as
people can be offered, especially if your error suggests a misunderstanding of
their culture(I.e. incorrect ordering of Chinese names).
Clicking “reply all” unintentionally
You accidentally reveal(透露)to entire company what menu choices you would
prefer at the staff Christmas dinner, or what holiday you’d like to take. In

everyone starts hitting “reply all” to join in a long and unpleasant
conversation. In this instance, step away from your keyboard to allow everyone
to calm down.
Sending an offensive message to it’s subject
The most awkward email mistake is usually committed in anger. You write an
unkind message about someone, intending to send it to a friend, but accidentally
send it to the person you’re discussing. In that case, ask to speak in person
as soon as possible and say sorry. Explain your frustrations calmly and sensibly
—see it as an opportunity tic hear up any difficulties you may have with this
person.
36. After realizing an email accident, you are likely to feel _______.
   A. curious B. tired C. awful D. funny
37. If you have written the wrong name in an email, it is best to ________.

B. tell the receiver to ignore the error
C. learn to write the name correctly
D. send a short notice to everyone
38. What should you do when an unpleasant conversation is started by your
“reply all” email?
A. Try offering other choices.
B. Avoid further involvement.
C. Meet other staff members.
D. Make a light-hearted apology.
39. How should you deal with the problem caused by an offensive email?
A. By promising not to offend the receiver again.
B. By seeking support from the receiver’s friends.
C. By asking the receiver to control his anger.
D. By talking to the receiver face to face.
40. What is the passage mainly about?

Children as young as ten are becoming dependent on social media for their sense of self-
worth, a major study warned.
It found many youngsters(少年)now measure their status by how much public approval they
get online, often through “like”. Some change their behavior in real life to improve their image on
the web.
The report into youngsters aged from 8 to 12 was carried out by Children's Commissioner (专
员)Anne Longfield. She said social media firms were exposing children to major emotional risks,
with some youngsters starting secondary school ill-equipped to cope with the tremendous
pressure
they faced online.
Some social apps were popular among the children even though they supposedly require
users to be at least 13.The youngsters admitted planning trips around potential photo-
opportunities and then messaging friends—and friends of friends — to demand “likes” for their
online posts.
The report found that youngsters felt their friendships could be at risk if they did not respond
to social media posts quickly, and around the clock.
Children aged 8 to 10 were "starting to feel happy" when others liked their posts. However,
those in the 10 to 12 age group were "concerned with how many people like their posts",
suggesting a “need” for social recognition that gets stronger the older they become.
Miss Longfield warned that a generation of children risked growing up "worried about their
 第 139 页 / 共 149 页
appearance and image as a result of the unrealistic lifestyles they follow on platforms, and
increasingly anxious about switching off due to the constant demands of social media.
She said: "Children are using social media with family and friends and to play games when
they are in primary school. But what starts as fun usage of apps turns into tremendous pressure in
real social media interaction at secondary school."
As their world expanded. she said, children compared themselves to others online in a way
that was "hugely damaging in terms of their self-identity, in terms of their confidence, but also in
terms of their ability to develop themselves".
Miss Longfield added: "Then there is this push to connect—if you go offline, will you miss
something, will you miss out, will you show that you don't care about those people you are
following, all of those come together in a huge way at once."
"For children it is very, very difficult to cope with emotionally." The Children's Commissioner
for England's study—life in Likes—found that children as young as 8 were using social media
platforms largely for play.
However, the research—involving eight groups of 32 children aged 8 to 12—suggested that as
they headed toward their teens, they became increasingly anxious online.
By the time they started secondary school—at age 11—children were already far more aware
of their image online and felt under huge pressure to ensure their posts were popular, the report
found.
However, they still did not know how to cope with mean-spirited jokes, or the sense of
incompetence they might feel if they compared themselves to celebrities(名人)or more brilliant
friends online. The report said they also faced pressure to respond to messages at all hours of the
day—especially at secondary school when more youngsters have mobile phones.
The Children’s Commissioner said schools and parents must now do more to prepare children
for the emotional minefield(雷区)they faced online. And she said social media companies must
also "take more responsibility". They should either monitor their websites better so that children
do not sign up too early, or they should adjust their websites to the needs of younger users.
Javed Khan, of children's charity Bamardo's, said: "It's vital that new compulsory age-
appropriate relationship and sex education lessons in England should help equip children to deal
with the growing demands of social media.

My Favourite Books
Jo Usmar is a writer for Cosmopolitan and co-author of the This Book Will series(系列)of lifestyle books.
Here she picks her top reads.
Matilda
Roald Dahl
I once wrote a paper on the influence of fairy tales on Roald Dahl's writing and it gave me a new appreciation
for his strange and delightful words. Matilda's battles with her cruel me parents and the bossy headmisres,Miss
Trunchbull, are equally fumy and frightening, but they're also aspirational.
After Dark
Haruki Murakami
It’s about two sisters-Eri,a model who either won’t or can’t stop sleeping, and Mari, a young student . In
trying to connect to her sister. Mari starts changing her life and discovers a world of diverse ”night people” who
are hiding secrets.
Gone Girl
Gillian Fynn
There was a bit of me that didn't want to love this when everyone else on the planet did but the horror story is
brilliant. There's tension and anxiety from the beginning as Nick and Amy battle for your trust. It's a real whodunit
and the frustration when you realise what's going on is horribly enjoyable
The Stand
Stephen King
This is an excellent fantasy novel from one of the best storytellers around. After a serious flu outbreak wipes
out 99.4% of the world's population, a battle unfolds between good and evil among those let. Randall Flagg is one
