so that 与so…that 的用法辨析
1. so that 引导目的状语从句时,表示“以便,为了”从句中常使用can/ could/ may/ might/ will/
The little boy saved every coin so that he could buy his mother a present on Mother’s Day.
We got up early, so that we caught the early bus.
2. so+形容词或副词+that…
The sunshine is so beautiful that I’d like to go swimming in the sea.
Miss Gao asked a question, but it was so difficult that nobody could answer it.
可以与be…enough to do 转换;当从句为否
定句时,可以与too…to 或be not…enough to do 转换。例如:
2
David was so careless that he didn’t find the mistakes in his test paper.
= David was too careless to find the mistakes in his test paper.
David
2. so…that 可以用such…that 来代替。例如:
He is so good a doctor that everybody loves and respects him.
= He is such a good doctor that everybody loves and respects him.
not only...but also 的用法
not only... but also 意为“不但...而且...”,它是一个表并列关系的连词,用来连接两个并列关系
的句子成分。例如:
I can speak not
only
English, but
also
French.
Not
only
you but
also
he is right.

As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing
but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as success.
Scientists have found out that the radiation ( 辐射) is the greatest danger to spacemen in space.
When spacemen are working in space, they are in danger of the radiation from the sun and other stars,
which is bad for their health. The harm of the radiation won't be found until their children even
grandchildren are born. Some special medicine may work a little, but no really effective medicine has been
found so far.
Space rubbish is also thought to be a great danger to spacemen. It's reported that there were
9,000 man-made things flying in space. About 30% of these are satellites, 10% are spaceships, and the rest
are space rubbish. An explosion (爆炸) in space in 1999 made a cloud of 300,000 fragments, each at least
4mm in size. A small piece of these even knocked a spaceship window and caused some damage (损坏).
Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working to deal
with space rubbish. Although space is really dangerous, it interests many people on the earth. In the near
future, it may become possible for people to spend a few days in a space hotel. We may even choose to
leave the earth and live in space in a few years. So we should do something to help improve the space
environment.
1. ______ shows the man-made things in space in the correct way.
A. B. C. D.
2. The radiation from the sun and other stars is ______ to spacemen.

5. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Scientists have found out ways to solve any problem in space.
B. Every one of us can have a travel to space in ten years.
C. The harm of the radiation may be found in the spacemen's children.
7
D. Space is really dangerous, so it doesn't interest anyone on the earth.

Sleep is very important. A person who does not sleep dies faster than a person who does not eat. We
spend about a third (1/3) of our lives sleeping. That’s about 121 days a year!
How much sleep do we need? We are all different. A baby needs 16 hours of sleep every day. Children
6 to 12 years old need an average (平均) of 10 to 12 hours of sleep . Teenagers need 9 to 10 hours of sleep.
An adult needs an average of 7 to 8 hours a night. There are some people who need only 3 hours of sleep.
Others need 10 hours of sleep. After the age of 50, the average sleep time goes down to 6.5 hours a night.
We need less sleep as we get older.
About one in three Americans has a problem with sleep. Many of these people can’t fall asleep. The
name of this problem is insomnia. Some people say, “I didn’t sleep all night.” But that’s not really true.
They may sleep lightly and wake up several times. In the morning, they only remember the times they were
awake (醒着), so they think they were awake all night.
This is not a new problem. Many famous people in history had insomnia. Some of these people had
special ideas to make them sleep. Benjamin Franklin had four beds. He moved from one to another to fall
asleep. Mark Twain had a different way. He lay on his side (侧卧) across the end of the bed!
6. If you are thirteen years old, you need at least ______ hours of sleep.
A. 16
B. 12 C. 9
D. 7
7. What does the underlined word “insomnia” mean in this passage?
A. Being unable to sleep.
B. Good sleep.
C. Slow sleep.
D. Sleep with many dreams.
8. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. We will die soon if we don’t sleep well.
B. The older we get, the less sleep we need.
C. We can’t tell a person’s age from his sleep time.
D. Famous people move from one bed to another to fall asleep.
9. Which would be the best title for this passage?
A. Sleep More! B. Go to Sleep! C. Sleep Time D. Famous People

Is there intelligent ( 有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said “no.” or “we don’t
know.” But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are astronomers(天文学家). They
believe intelligent life exists (存在) somewhere in the universe. They also think we sill soon contact these
beings(人;生物).
Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life exists on other planets? The first reason is time.
Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. “This is long enough for other planets to have
intelligent life,” say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size—the universe is huge. “Tools like the
Hubble Telescope(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies,” says Shostak.
8
“And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might
be similar to Earth.”
In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful
telescopes(高倍望远镜) allow scientists to discover smaller planets—the size of Mars or Earth—in other
solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.
Have beings from space already visited Earth? “Probably not,” says Shostak. “It’s a long way away.
However, intelligent beings may contact us in other way, such as radio signals(信号). In fact, they may be
trying to communicate with us now, but we don’t have the right tools to receive their messages. However,
this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help
each other.”
10. Seth Shostak and Alexandra Barnett are _____.
A. astronomers B. farmers C. singers D. drivers
11. What is the best title for Paragraph 2?
A. The Age and Size of Earth B. Our Galaxy: The Milky Way
C. Why Intelligent Life Might Exist D. Earth: The Only Planet with Intelligent Life
12. Why was it hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe in the past?
A. There were not any smaller planets. B. There were not any powerful telescopes.
C. The astronomers were not interested in them. D. The Milky Way didn’t exist at that time,
13. Why haven’t beings from space visited us yet according to Shostak?
A. They’re afraid of us. B. It’s a long way away.
C. They don’t want to see us. D. They don’t know how to use radio signals.
14. What does the underlined phrase “life forms” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Messages B. Tools C. Intelligent beings D. Radio signals
