When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without
thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing
was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the
Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did.
So why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: “Because I love your
stories. If you’re willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this.” Encouraged by his words, I agreed
to give it a try.
I chose Paul Revere’s horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith (银匠) in Boston who rode a horse at
night on April 18, 1775 to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come
straight from the horse’s mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny; and unlikely to be anyone else’s choice.
What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I
sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere’s horse, I kept going. I
worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half dozen
books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them.
When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, “Great. Now, write it again.”
I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the
enjoyment of writing. If I didn’t win, I wouldn’t care.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the
small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was
small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t
with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids
from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let
him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After
making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking
from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his
classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were
doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team.
It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run
long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with
the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150 左右;

第一步:提炼六个要素,获取主旨大意。
读后续写的阅读文本基本上都是记叙文,所以要提炼出六个基本要素:who, where, when, what, why 和
how。

Mia had always loved to draw. Ever since she could hold a pencil, she had filled sketchbooks with worlds only

preparing for an important art competition. Her latest sketchbook held her best ideas, pages of carefully crafted
characters and landscapes she had worked on for months.
One bright Saturday afternoon, Mia went to the park to sketch under her favorite oak tree. She set her
sketchbook beside her and focused on capturing the golden sunlight through the yellow-and-brown leaves dancing
in the air. Lost in her imagination, she didn’t notice a gust of wind sweeping through the park — until it was too
late.
After pulling her arm from her face, Mia reached for her sketchbook. But it was gone.
Panic coursed through her. She searched the grass, looked behind the tree and even checked the nearby
benches. No hint of her precious sketchbook could be found. With her heart pounding, she ran to the exit of the
park, looking carefully at the crowd before her. Had someone picked it up?
Just then, a voice interrupted her thoughts. “Looking for something?”
Mia turned to see a boy around her age holding a worn-out notebook. His clothes were dirty with charcoal (炭
笔), and a pencil stuck out from behind his ear.
“My sketchbook — it has a red cover,” she said anxiously.
The boy shook his head. “Haven’t seen it, but I can help you look. I’m Leo, by the way.” Mia hesitated for a
moment, then nodded. “Mia,” she replied.
Together, they retraced her steps, asking if anyone had seen a red sketchbook. An elderly woman said a child
picked up something near the oak tree. A little girl in a pink dress saw a boy waving something red to his parents.
Each clue brought them closer, but Mia couldn’t shake her doubt: What if it was already gone?

There lived a ten-year-old boy named Tim in a small town. Though born in a family that struggled to make
ends meet, Tim was a bright and lively boy, having a strong passion for music. He held a dream that he could
perform music for many people at his own concert in the future.
One day, word reached Tim about a local music competition, the prize of which was a full scholarship to a
highly regarded music academy. This was an opportunity that seemed like a golden ticket to his dream, so he made
the decision to participate. After hurrying to sign up for the competition, he made a plan to practice, day in and day
out, using an old guitar that had been passed down from his grandfather.
When the day of the competition finally arrived, Tim felt a mixture of nervousness and excitement. He stepped
onto the stage and poured all his heart, soul, and love into the music. He felt rather satisfied with his performance.
During the following days, he waited for the result anxiously. However, he didn’t win. He completely broke
down, feeling all his painstaking efforts were for nothing. A deep sense of discouragement settled over him. His
parents knew that his skills are not good enough but didn’t know how to comfort him. Tim was always sitting,
playing his old guitar in the park, with nobody to talk with.
A few weeks later, a man named Mr. Thompson moved into the neighborhood. Little did anyone know that Mr.
Thompson was a guitar master who once shared the spotlight on stages with well-known bands but now sought the
peace of a quiet life. One day, he happened to spot Tim sitting alone, playing the guitar with a disappointed
expression. He approached Tim and started a conversation. Tim opened up to him about his experience in the
competition.

Anna was always known as the quiet girl. Despite her love for painting, she never shared her works with
anyone. In her final year of high school, she came across a poster announcing an art competition. The theme of the
competition was “Courage”, and the prize was a scholarship to a well-known art school. It was the opportunity
Anna had dreamed of, but her fear of judgment held her back.
For days, Anna struggled with self-doubt. Her best friend Mia tried to encourage her. “You have a gift, Anna.
Don’t hide it,” she said. But Anna could only think of all the ways she might fail. Her paintings, filled with vivid
colors and bold strokes (笔触), were a reflection of her personal emotions, and the thought of others seeing them
made her feel exposed and lacking in confidence.
One evening, while considering whether to enter the competition, she received a call from her older brother
Tom, who was studying abroad. “Remember Dad’s old easel (画架)?” he asked. “He always said it was meant for
an artist who isn’t afraid to show the world who they really are.”
The dusty and unused easel stood in the corner of her room, a silent reminder of the father she had lost two
years earlier. His dream had been to see Anna become a famous artist, but since his passing, she had been too afraid
to pursue that dream.
Inspired by her father’s words and Tom’s encouragement, Anna decided to take the chance. She spent the next
week working tirelessly on her painting. It vividly depicted ( 描绘) a sunflower standing tall in a storm —
symbolizing resilience (复原力) and hope, just as her father had always taught her.
When she finally submitted the piece, she felt a mix of fear and relief. She had done it, regardless of the
outcome. She had taken the first. step towards her dream.

Jane was the fastest runner in the school’s track and field team (田径队). Every morning, she’d be the first to
reach the track, her old running shoes hitting the ground-their bottoms were broken, and the laces had been tied
many circles to keep them from falling apart. Life at home was a mess: her dad’s small repair shop closed down,
and her mom had to take on two part-time jobs to pay the bills. But Jane never complained (抱怨); running was her
way to relax, and she’d even won third place in the last city 800-meter race with those worn shoes.
One afternoon, the coach called the team together: “The city’s track competition is next month. All runners
must wear new running shoes for safety and better performance — no old or worn ones allowed.” Jane’s heart
dropped. She looked down at her shoes, knowing a new pair would cost too much and that her family couldn’t
afford it. That night, she sat on her bed, touching the shoes over and over, all kinds of ideas flying across the mind.
She thought of giving up the competition, but the thought of letting her team down made her heart ache.
The next day, Jane fell behind during practice, her steps slower than usual. Sarah, the team’s leader and her
closest friend, noticed. “You’re not your usual self — what’s troubling you?” At first, Jane shook her head, but she
opened up at last. She talked about the new shoes and her family’s trouble. Sarah listened quietly, and then said,
“We’ll work this out together.”
After practice, Sarah gathered the team except Jane secretly. “Jane’s our top long-distance runner — we can’t
let her miss the competition!” They discussed ideas: a bake sale, a charity (慈善) concert... and finally decided on a
second-hand book and toy charity sale. For a week, they collected things from classmates and teachers, set up a
stand every afternoon, and told everyone about Jane’s story. By Sunday evening, they’d raised more than enough
for the shoes — and even a little extra for her family.

The Unforgettable Table Tennis Match
The annual interclass table tennis competition kicked off as scheduled on a sunny Friday afternoon. Despite
having practiced table tennis for years, I chose not to sign up, burdened by a lack of self-confidence.
As I watched the intense matches between our class and others, everything seemed normal at first. Our players
were highly skilled, moving swiftly around the table, their eyes fixed on the small white ball. Suddenly, an
unsettling piece of news spread like wildfire. We were one female player short, which didn’t meet the competition
requirements. My heart sank at this unexpected setback. Just then, my best friend Mary rushed towards me like an
arrow, her eyes shining with eagerness. “Please join our team,” she begged repeatedly.
Our monitor, who had been cheering loudly for our team, also came up to me hurriedly. “You’ve been
practicing for so long. This is your chance to win glory for our class,” he encouraged, patting me on the shoulder.
My hands trembled and my heart beat violently at the thought of my unskillful techniques. To everyone’s surprise,
including me, I performed remarkably well in the first round. Each successful shot was greeted with thunderous
cheers from my classmates. When I scored the winning point, all the audience erupted into cheers and couldn’t help
giving me a thumbs-up.
However, our victory was short-lived. During the second round, a teammate suddenly fell uncomfortable,
meaning I would have to replace her for the rest of the competition. I hesitated for a moment, torn between fear and
responsibility. Glancing at my classmates’ expectant faces, I took a deep breath, my mind racing. To be honest, I
felt I didn’t have enough strength to continue as I was already exhausted and worn out. But seeing my teammates’
support and the hope in their eyes, I knew I couldn’t let them down.

Once upon a time, there was a young pianist named Anna. Anna loved to play the piano. She would practice
every day, hoping to become a great pianist one day. But no matter how hard she tried, she felt like she was not
good enough. She played in small cafes and at family gatherings, but she never felt confident in her skills.
One rainy afternoon, Anna was playing the piano in a small, quiet cafe. There were only a few people there,
and Anna felt sad because no one seemed to care about her music. Suddenly, an older man walked into the cafe. He
had kind eyes and a gentle smile. He sat down at a table near the piano and listened.
Anna noticed the man and felt a bit nervous. She continued to play, trying her best to ignore her doubts. When
she finished her song, the man clapped loudly, surprising Anna. He walked over to her and said, “That was
beautiful. You have a real gift.” Anna blushed and looked down. “Thank you,” she said softly. “But I’m not sure if
I’m good enough to be a real pianist.”
The man smiled kindly. “Everyone has doubts,” he said. “But you have something special. Don’t give up.
Keep practicing, and believe in yourself. Sometimes, all we need is a little encouragement to see our true potential.”
Anna felt a warmth in her heart. No one had ever said something like that to her before. She decided to take
the man’s advice. She practiced even harder, playing with more passion. She started to believe in herself a little
more each day. The kind man continued to visit the cafe and listen to Anna’s play. He always encouraged her,
telling her she could achieve her dream. With his support, Anna’s playing improved greatly. People began to notice
her talent, and soon, the small cafe was filled with people coming to hear her music. One day, the man gave Anna a
piece of paper. “There’s a piano competition in the city,” he said. “I think you should enter. You have what it takes

The exhibition hall was filled with bright lights. All the finalists of the “Traditional Paper-cutting
Competition” were proudly showing their works. I,16-year-old Mia, placed my Butterfly Garden on the display
table. My hands were shaking. I used Grandma’s favorite scissors (剪刀) to cut this red paper. There were many
carefully-made butterflies on it. Each one showed how many hours I spent practicing.
I could hear Grandma’s voice in my head. “Paper-cutting isn’t just about making pretty shapes,” she often said
with a smile. “It’s like writing a story with scissors. Every cut tells a part of our family, our life, and our love for
this art.” She would sit beside me for hours, showing me how to fold the paper just right and guiding my hand as I
made each cut. “Look, Mia,” she’d say, “this curve (曲线) is like a river in our village, and these tiny holes are the
stars we see at night.” I listened carefully, feeling the magic of our family’s stories coming to life on the paper.
When the judges walked around to check all the works, I was really nervous. I saw them stop at some other
pieces. My throat went dry, and I started biting my lip anxiously. But I still thought my Butterfly Garden was the
best. The big butterfly in the middle was for Grandma, who taught me everything. The smaller ones around it were
like the memories we shared.
When the host walked onto the stage to say who won, my heart was beating so fast. I felt like it could jump out
of my chest. I was thinking about standing on the stage, getting the medal. But then I heard the host say, “The
winner of the competition is... Lucy with her Ballet Dream!” For a moment, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. My
Butterfly Garden looked so simple and not special at all compared to her shiny, high-tech paper-cut. I looked at
Grandma in the crowd. She was smiling, her eyes bright and proud, as if she wanted to tell me something
important.
