A MOTHER’S DAY SURPRISE
The twins were filled with excitement as they thought of the surprise they were planning for Mother’s Day.
How pleased and proud Mother would be when they brought her breakfast in bed. They planned to make French
toast and chicken porridge. They had watched their mother in the kitchen. There was nothing to it. Jenna and Jeff
knew exactly what to do.
The big day came at last. The alarm rang at 6 a.m. The pair went down the stairs quietly to the kitchen. They
decided to boil the porridge first. They put some rice into a pot of water and left it to boil while they made the
French toast. Jeff broke two eggs into a plate and added in some milk. Jenna found the bread and put two slices into
the egg mixture. Next, Jeff turned on the second stove burner to heat up the frying pan. Everything was going
smoothly until Jeff started frying the bread. The pan was too hot and the bread turned black within seconds. Jenna
threw the burnt piece into the sink and put in the other slice of bread. This time, she turned down the fire so it
cooked nicely.
Then Jeff noticed steam shooting out of the pot and the lid starting to shake. The next minute, the porridge
boiled over and put out the fire. Jenna panicked. Thankfully, Jeff stayed calm and turned off the gas quickly. But the
stove was a mess now. Jenna told Jeff to clean it up so they could continue to cook the rest of the porridge. But
Jeff’s hand touched the hot burner and he gave a cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she
caught the smell of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.

My dad, George, only had an eighth grade education. A quiet man, he didn’t understand my world of school
activities. From age 14, he worked. And his dad, Albert, took the money my dad earned and used it to pay family
expenses.
I didn’t really understand his world either: He was a livestock trucker, and I thought that I would surpass ( 超
过) anything he had accomplished by the time I walked across the stage at high school graduation.
Summers in the mid-70s were spent at home shooting baskets, hitting a baseball, or throwing a football,
preparing for my future as a quarterback on a football team. In poor weather, I read about sports or practiced my
trombone (长号).
The summer before my eighth grade I was one of a group of boys that a neighboring farmer hired to work in
his field. He explained our basic task, the tractor fired up and we were off, riding down the field looking for weeds
to spray with chemicals. After a short way, the farmer stopped and pointed at a weed which we missed. Then we
began again. This happened over and over, but we soon learned to identify different grasses like cockleburs, lamb’s-
quarters, foxtails, and the king of weeds, the pretty purple thistle. It was tiring work, but I looked forward to the
pay, even though I wasn’t sure how much it would amount to.
At home, my dad said, “A job’s a big step to growing up. I’m glad you will be contributing to the household.”
My dad’s words made me realize that my earnings might not be mine to do with as I wished.
My labors lasted about two weeks, and the farmer said there might be more work, but I wasn’t interested. I
decided it was not fair that I had to contribute my money.

The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had
lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other
meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She
knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine
to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed,
his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy -his name was
Bernard-had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his
mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn
money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I
have a solution that we can all help accomplish(完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell
you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make
popcorn(爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”

how。

Suzi wanted to go to a beach party. It was going to be the best party of the year, perhaps the best party of her
life. But her mom had said no. Suzi was desperate and protested, “But everyone is going.”
“I don’t care who’s going,” replied her mother. “Even if the Queen of England were going, you are still not
going.”
Suzi was disappointed and even heartbroken. Sunday dinner came around and Suzi's grandmother joined the
family for the meal, as she nearly always did on Sunday. Gran noticed how unhappy Suzi had been looking during
the meal but didn’t say a thing. It was Suzi's turn to wash up and Gran said, “Let me help you,” while the rest of the
family shifted into the living room to watch a video.
In the kitchen, Gran knew what had happened and said, “If you were her, what would your objections be?”
Suzi hadn’t stopped to think about her mom’s side.
After learning that some adults were going to be there, Gran said to Suzi, “Your mother is concerned and
doesn’t want anything to happen to you?” “Nothing will happen,” objected Suzi.
“Maybe you’re right,” said Gran, “but maybe Mom’s worried in case it could. You know, when your mother
was your age, we used to negotiate about something. If she was going out somewhere, I would ask what time she
wanted me to pick her up. She would always add an hour or two to it, saying maybe eleven or twelve o’clock,
thinking I wouldn’t know what she was doing. I’d tell her that was far too late and that I wanted her home by nine.
She’d object and we’d both come to a compromise (折中) at ten or ten-thirty, which was around what both of us
had been thinking all along.”
“That way, neither of us was the winner or loser; that way, she got to have time out as she wanted and I got to
see her home at a reasonable time. By finding a compromise, we both got something, though maybe not completely,
of what we wanted.”

Sophia, a college student, had always been close to her grandmother, Lily. They shared a special bond, and
despite the distance, they remained in constant communication through letters and phone calls. Lily had been a
constant source of inspiration and encouragement for Sophia, guiding her through the challenges of her academic
journey. As Sophia was busy preparing for her final exams, she received a letter from her mother, informing her that
Lily had been hospitalized due to a sudden illness. The news struck Sophia with a mixture of concern and sadness,
as she had always looked up to her grandmother as a source of strength.
Feeling concerned and anxious, Sophia decided to make the long journey back home to visit her
grandmother. She knew that her exams were important, but she also understood that her family needed her support
during this difficult time. When she arrived at the hospital, she was relieved to see Lily in stable condition but
visibly weakened. Over the next few days, Sophia spent every spare moment at her grandmother’s bedside, offering
her support and comfort. The hospital staff and other family members were amazed at the strong bond between
them, which seemed to transcend (超越) their generational differences.
As they spent time together, Lily shared stories from her youth, recounting her own experiences in college
and the challenges she had faced. She spoke of her passion for learning, the friendships she had established, and the
importance of resilience ( 韧性) in overcoming obstacles. She also offered valuable life lessons and wisdom,
reminding Sophia of the importance of maintaining a balance between her academic pursuits and personal
relationships. Their conversations deepened the connection between them, and Sophia felt grateful for the
opportunity to learn from her grandmother’s experiences.
Throughout her stay, Sophia also took on the responsibility of helping her mother care for Lily, assisting with
her medical appointments and ensuring that her needs were met. The experience allowed her to develop a newfound
appreciation for the sacrifices her mother and grandmother had made for their family. As she returned to college,
she carried with her a deep sense of gratitude and determination to make them proud.

Amanda and Susie might be sisters, but they’d never got on. You’d think they would, with only two years
between them. Yet from the minute Susie was born, Amanda knew the baby resented her.
Now, despite being in their fifties, the hatred was still fresh in their minds. The only thing they had in
common was that they both adored their mother. Then one day, when Amanda was in the classroom, teaching a
particularly challenging group of teenagers, her father rang with the terrible news that their mother had died
suddenly. Both sisters were stricken with grief, but Susie, who’d been looking after her granddaughter when she got
the call, was also upset that their father hadn’t informed her first.
Then their father told them about their mother’s will. “She’s left you the painting.” He seemed to be
addressing them both the painting — the source of one of their biggest childhood arguments. Their mother had
decided that it would be nice to have a photo of both her girls.
“Did Mum leave the portrait to me?” asked Amanda. No, Susie wanted to say. Surely her mother couldn’t
have been so biased. “In fact,” replied their father, “she’s left it to both of you.”
“How’s that going to work?” asked Amanda. “We live miles apart.” “Thankfully” muttered Susie. Amanda
shot her a displeased look. “The will demands that you each have it for six months and then swap over, for as long
as you both live.”
So, every six months Amanda and Susie drove to a service station between their homes and carefully handed
over the painting.
Two years passed. The funny thing was that the sisters saw more of each other than they had done for years.
Sometimes Susie tried to start a conversation, and Amanda claimed she had to dash. Sometimes it was the other
way round.
But then came a bright winter day when Susic turned up for the handover, and her sister wasn’t there.
Amanda was often late, but never three hours late. She wasn’t even replying to Susie’s “Where were you” texts.

I was 31 and finally lived by myself. My own schedule. My own rules. My own life. No mom cooking
breakfast down the hall. No dad powering up the leaf blower outside the window. No nieces and nephews running
across the floors. Just me, myself and my dream to become a writer. My parents didn’t understand, so I left without
sharing even a word with them.
It had taken me a long time to get here. In July 1997, at age 13, I’d been diagnosed with severe leukemia ( 白
My parents and other family members supported me through cruel treatments, through my high school and
the University of Michigan. After college,I contented myself with staying with them at home.
It wasn’t so bad. Mom and Dad had redesigned the kitchen and bathroom to make cooking and showering as
easy as possible for me, since the disease had robbed me of my balance. They also added on a beautiful desk, where
I could sit, read and recharge. But what kind of real writer still lived with her parents at my age? I communicated
with them about my plan to move out. However, they sang a different tune.
I moved out after a violent quarrel. A few happy days went by. However, running the dishwasher and doing
laundry proved challenging, and the living room needed cleaning after just one week. My exhaustion problems
made it difficult to keep up. On day 17, I pulled out the machine to clean the messy room but quickly lost my
balance.I tried to steady myself, but physically, I couldn’t do it. Lying on the floor without a trace of balance, I

On the sunlit grassland, the wind carried the faint scent of wildflowers. Urbuusan, a 37-year-old herder,
locked shoulders with his 12-year-old son, Degjiin. They stood face to face, grabbing each other’s shoulders. Their
boots pressed a little into the soft earth, each grunting softly as they tried to lift the other’s arms and legs — this
was their daily Mongolian wrestling (Bokh) training.
“Don’t lean back too much, Degjiin! Keep your core tight! Once again” Urbuusan reminded, his rough hands
holding his son, firm but gentle. Degjiin nodded, his small body tensing up, sweat dropping from the forehead, yet
eyes fixed on his father’s steady gaze.
Bokh, which means durability, ran in Urbuusan’s blood. For 20 years, he’d joined wrestling competitions
across the region and won over 10 titles. His old leather wrestling uniform, sewn with traditional patterns, hung
proudly on the yurt wall. Degjiin had watched those triumphs since he was 6, mimicking his father’s throws in the
grass until his knees were scrape d (蹭破). At 8, Urbuusan took him to his first competition. Now, Degjiin’s own
medals shone on a wooden shelf — especially the gold one from last year’s Chifeng youth tournament, where he
beat 254 others and earned a white horse he named Bayan.
As a fifth-grader, Degjiin had a busy schedule: herding with his family in the morning, going to school, and
then practicing at the school’s Bokh club. But he always saved an hour to train with his father. “Dad’s moves are
like the wind— fast and strong,” Degjiin would say while cleaning Bayan’s stable (马厩).
Next month, the regional traditional sports games would be held, and Degjiin had been practicing a new
throw Urbuusan taught him. Yet last week, Urbuusan twisted his ankle during a practice match. Now, as they
trained, he struggled slightly, hiding it from his son. Degjiin noticed, though — his father’s steps were slower.

Grandpa Miller and six-year-old Timmy were always busy at their shared workbench. Under Grandpa’s
gentle guidance, Timmy carefully polished a small wooden dog that they had made together for a long time, proud
to be learning “real work” from Grandpa.
Their joy also spread around the big dinner table. Timmy kept talking to Grandpa. “Will the dog stand firmly,
Grandpa?” “Sure! I sanded it SUPER smooth!” Grandpa responded gently.
Across the table sat Timmy’s father, Ben. He bent over his laptop, his eyebrows frowned ( 皱)。The joy of
the grandfather and grandson seemed to escape him. “Quarterly reports are due tomorrow,” he replied to his wife
Sarah absent-mindedly, who had just reminded him of the delicious potatoes. He grabbed a bite, his eyes sliding
back to the laptop, blind to the warmth around him. When he reached for the bowl, intending to take a quick sip
(抿), his arm knocked it over. Some hot soup spilled (洒) onto the table.
“Be careful!” Sarah said softly. She grabbed a cloth and started to clean the spill quickly. Ben was wiping his
laptop when some soup spilled on his trousers. “Oh, annoying! The harder I try to get this done quickly, the more
things go wrong!” said he, getting angry. Astonished, little Timmy stopped talking at once. He stared at his father
quietly, not knowing what to do.
Grandpa Miller watched what happened calmly and then spoke in his low voice - the same familiar tone that
used to comfort Ben when he was small. “Easy there, son,” he said firmly, “The soup deserves your whole heart, so

Sarah has always had a deep passion for painting, and her greatest dream is to host her own art exhibition
someday. Her art teacher told her about an upcoming local youth arts show — and she’d already started preparing
for it. However, her parents, both practicing doctors, urged her hard to go into medicine, arguing it would give her a
stable, secure future.
One evening at dinner, her father said firmly, “It’s time you start preparing for the medical school entrance
exams. You’re smart and hard-working — you’ll surely thrive in this field.” Sarah set down her fork,
disappointment clouding her eyes. “But I don’t want to be a doctor,” she insisted. “Painting is what I’m truly
passionate about.” Her mother sighed softly, “Art is a wonderful hobby, but it doesn’t pay the bills. You need to be
practical about your future.” Growing frustrated, Sarah stood up, stormed to her bedroom and locked the door.
Staring at her half-finished painting, tears welled up in her eyes — trapped between her love for art and her parents’
expectations.
That night, Sarah lay awake, tossing and turning. She hated the thought of letting down her supportive
parents, yet she couldn’t bear the idea of giving up her dream. The next day at school, her best friend Lily noticed
her gloom and asked what was wrong. After Sarah poured out her troubles, Lily advised, “Follow your heart — but
prove to your parents how serious you are about painting.”
Taking Lily’s advice, Sarah spent the weekend crafting a series of paintings that laid bare her emotions. She
also looked up artists who’d built successful careers out of their art. On Monday evening, she asked her parents into
her room, showed them her portfolio (作品集) and notes, and said, “I know you’re worried, but I believe I can
make it as an artist — selling online, teaching, or doing custom work. Please give me a chance.” Her parents
listened quietly, their faces softening as they looked over her work.

In the corner of our basement sits a shelf filled with old radios — wooden boxes with metal buttons and
antennas (天线), whose colors faded with time. To most, they might seem like waste. But to my grandfather, they
were treasure chests of stories.
My grandfather grew up in a small mountain village, where the only way to hear news of the outside world
was through an old, noisy and unclear radio that he fixed by connecting wires under high heat. “I didn’t understand
most of the words,” he used to laugh. “But the music spoke to me.” Fixing radios became more than a hobby — it
was how he reached out to the world. He learned everything through repeated trials, until broken silence turned into
sound again.
My mother never planned to keep this habit. As a teenager, she preferred tape players and music that she
could carry with her. But when Grandpa passed away, she couldn’t throw away his tools or the radios he left.
“They’re part of him,” she once said, gently turning a round metal button on one of the radios. Slowly, she began
trying to fix a few of them, not as an expert, but with care and curiosity.
By the time I was ten, I had watched my mother spend many weekends surrounded by small parts and wires.
“Come and try with me,” she said one Saturday. “Let’s see if we can fix this one together.” I didn’t know what to
do, and I didn’t even like machines. I enjoyed reading and drawing. But when she turned the button and a jazz tune
started playing, I felt something touched me.
Soon, fixing radios became our weekly activity. She showed me how to look closely at every wire and tiny
part, and how to be patient and listen carefully. “Sometimes the problem isn’t what you see,” she said. “It’s what
you hear — or don’t hear.”
Unlike my mother, I fell in love with it quickly. I began collecting old radios from neighbors and even tried
fixing ones that no longer worked. I didn’t just want to make them work — I wanted to bring back their sound.

have a look and do a bit of dreaming at Eaton’s department store window on our way home.
Amongst beautiful toys lay a stunning red satin (缎子) dress. Mother’s eyes fixed on it. “My goodness,” she
whispered, “Look at that”, She then glanced down at her own heavy grey wool coat, worn every winter for as long
as I could remember. Mother, constantly doing chores like laundry, tending pigs, and gardening, always wore
practical housedresses and an apron (围裙). She owned just one or two“special” dresses for significant events and
made most of our comfortable, simple clothes.
“What a silly dress”, she said to herself, shaking her head. “Who on earth would want such a big thing?” Yet,
as we walked away, she turned back for one last look. “My goodness! You’d think they’d display something
useful.”
As Mother’s Day approached, the red dress was soon forgotten. Mother, intensely practical, never spent
money on non-essentials (必需品). “There are things we need more than this,” she’d insist. Choosing her gift was
difficult. When asked, she requested only useful items like tea towels or a new basin.
During our last trip to town before Mother’s Day, with us driving up Main Street, Mother suddenly shouted:
“Look”, She pointed excitedly as father drove past Eaton’s. “That big red dress is gone”, she exclaimed in disbelief.
Shaking her head, she questioned, “Who’d be fool enough to buy such a dress?” But I was certain I was aware of a
distinct trace of longing (一丝渴望) beneath her words. The absence of the dress seemed to highlight its beauty
rather than erase it from memory.
