“The World Wide Web has become a library, a shop, a school, an office, a cinema, a bank, and so much
more,” Sir Tim Berners-Lee, 1 created the World Wide Web while working at CERN in 1989, said at last
year’s World Wide Web Conference. “While the web has 2 (great) made our daily lives more convenient,
it has also made all kinds of crime 3 (easy) to commit.”
In recent years, the web’s problems seem to have begun outweighing 4 (it) benefits. At the
conference, Berners-Lee and the Web Foundation, a group formed to address the challenges 5 (face) the
web, announced 6 set of core principles for governments, companies and people to follow in an effort to
control the Internet’s damaging effects. The principles concerned equal access, building 7 (strength) and
respectful communities, 8 protecting privacy. Berners-Lee urged everyone involved with the web 9
(accept) those principles.
“Given how much the web has changed in the past 30 years, it would be unimaginative to assume that the
web, as we know it, can’t 10 (change) for the better. If we give up on building a better web now, then the
web will not have failed us. We will have failed the web.”
