考试内容:人教版,高中英语,必修三《why do we celebrate festivals》

【Leading-in】

Good morning, class. Let's begin with a question. What festivals do you celebrate with your family each year? Yes, the Spring Festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the Dragon Boat Festival. And why do you think people celebrate different festivals? Some of you say it's to get together with family. Others say it's to remember history or to enjoy good food. Today we are going to read a text that explores this very question: Why do we celebrate festivals? Let's find out what the writer says.

【Pre-reading】

Before we read, let's look at the title: "Why Do We Celebrate Festivals?" Take a moment to predict what the text will be about. Yes, it will explain the reasons behind festivals and how they are celebrated around the world. Now, let's read the text and discover the answer.

【While-reading】

Now, please read the text silently. You have three minutes. As you read, think about the main idea of each paragraph.

Time's up. Let's go through the text together.

The first paragraph tells us that festivals are celebrated all around the world. They have a wide range of origins, such as the seasons of the year, religions, famous figures, and important events. Every festival has different customs and unique charms. However, no matter how different they may seem, the spirit of sharing joy, gratitude, love, or peace is common in all festivals. So the answer to the title question is: we celebrate festivals to share joy, gratitude, love, and peace.

The second paragraph focuses on the harvest festival, which can be found in almost every culture. This important agricultural festival takes place after all the crops have been gathered in. People celebrate to show that they are grateful for the year's supply of food. The text gives examples from ancient Egypt, some European countries, and China's Mid-Autumn Festival. In ancient Egypt, there was a parade and a great feast with music, dancing, and sports. In some European countries today, people decorate churches and town halls with flowers and fruit. In China, families gather to admire the moon and enjoy mooncakes. So the harvest festival is all about gratitude.

The third paragraph tells us that customs play a significant role in festivals, but they can change over time. With the development of modern society and the spread of new ideas, some traditions may fade away and others may be established. The text gives two examples. First, the Chinese Spring Festival custom of lighting firecrackers to drive away evil spirits. Nowadays, many big cities have given up this custom to avoid air pollution. Second, Halloween slowly became an exciting festival for children, in spite of its religious origins. So customs change because society changes.

Now, let's look at the key vocabulary. "A wide range of origins" means many different beginnings. "Harvest" means gathering crops. "Grateful" means thankful. "Feature" means to include something as an important part. "Decorate" means to make something look beautiful. "Significant" means important. "Typical" means usual or common. "Fade away" means to slowly disappear. "Establish" means to start or create.

【Post-reading】

Now, let's answer some questions. What are some of the origins of festivals? The seasons of the year, religions, famous figures, and important events. What is common in all festivals around the world? The spirit of sharing joy, gratitude, love, or peace. Why do people celebrate harvest festivals? To show that they are grateful for the year's supply of food. What is one example of how customs can change? The Spring Festival custom of lighting firecrackers has been given up in many big cities to avoid air pollution. Why do customs change? Because of the development of modern society and the spread of new ideas.

Now, let's have a group discussion. In groups of four, discuss these questions: Do you think it is good that some customs change over time? Why or why not? What is one festival custom in your family that you think is very important to keep? You have three minutes.

Time's up. Let's hear from some groups. Group 2, please share. You think some changes are good, like giving up firecrackers to protect the environment. But you also think it's important to keep the spirit of the festival alive. That's a balanced view. Group 4, you think the custom of family reunions during Spring Festival is very important to keep because it brings everyone together. Yes, that's the heart of the festival. Group 1, you think the custom of eating mooncakes during Mid-Autumn Festival should be kept because it's a delicious tradition. Absolutely.

Now, let's look at the structure of the text. The first paragraph introduces the main idea: all festivals share a common spirit. The second paragraph gives an example of harvest festivals around the world to show how people express gratitude. The third paragraph explains how customs can change over time. So the text moves from general to specific, and from description to example.

【Conclusion】

Today we explored the question: Why do we celebrate festivals? We learned that festivals have different origins like seasons, religions, famous figures, and important events. But no matter how different they are, they all share the spirit of joy, gratitude, love, and peace. We looked at harvest festivals as an example of gratitude, and we discussed how customs can change over time due to modern society and new ideas. Festivals are not just about traditions; they are about the values that bring us together. You all did a fantastic job today.

【Homework】

Now for homework, please complete two tasks. First, write a short paragraph about a festival you celebrate with your family. Explain its origins, customs, and what spirit it shares. Use at least three of the new vocabulary words: range, figures, gratitude, harvest, feature, decorate, significant, typical, fade away, establish. Second, interview a family member about one festival custom from their childhood that has changed. Write down what the custom was and how it is different today. Share your writing with the class next time. That is all for today. Thank you for your wonderful participation. See you next time.
